Stirlingshire B&B benefits from non-domestic RHI to the tune of

£120,000.

Mabeth and Malcolm Paterson run a thriving B&B and self-catering operation from their home in the Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park. Loaninghead is in the selected B&B list, ‘The Little Green Book’ and also ‘Scotland’s Best B&Bs.’ The main house is an 18th century red sandstone former hunting lodge and there are also 2 separate rental cottages and a bothy apartment.

With the different properties on site it made sense to consider a small district heating system supplying each with the heating and hot water they required from a centralised heat source.

The heating was via an LPG boiler, one of the most expensive fuel types and the Patersons were keen to investigate options to reduce heating bills preferably using a renewable heating solution and without compromising the comfort of guests.

A 50kW ETA pellets boiler was specified by Ecoliving along with large buffer cylinder, pellets store, flue, Heating Interface Units (HIU) and 120m of super insulated pipework to be buried underground and carry the heat to the different properties.

Ecoliving was asked to assess the options and put forward a proposal.

Appropriate meters were fitted for measuring heating output for the non-

domestic Renewable Heating Incentive (RHI) which the installation qualifies for being a commercial application and a district heating system. With a heat demand of over 77,000 kWh/year the anticipated RHI payments amount to £6,048 a year and in excess of £120,000 over 20 years!

Earn up to £30,000 by installing a biomass boiler!

*

The government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is paid over 7 years and rewards you for installing a biomass boiler, heat pump or solar thermal panels. This generous incentive is on top of the savings on your heating bills. Interest-free loans available up to £10,000! • Pellet, chip and log boilers • Ground and air source heat pumps • Solar thermal panels • Free site survey • Free RHI projection • Local company • Over 2,000 installations • Own installation teams • 10 years’ experience • Multi-technology capability

Spotlight on Killearn Village

Business

Killearn village sits high within The Park Life area with stunning views towards Ben Lomond and Loch Lomond, best viewed from The Glebe. Steeped in history, the Buchanan monument, a magnificent obelisk was erected in 1788 by public subscription. It commemorates George Buchanan who was a great scholar and tutor to James V1 of Scotland. George Buchanan was born at the Moss in Killearn and began his education in Killearn before studying in St Andrews and Paris. Home to just under two thousand

residents, Killearn is a charming, busy village, full of amenities. From doctor’s surgery to veterinary practice and pharmacy to small supermarkets, florist and other galleries, small shops and garage. The village is served by a progressive primary school and two private nurseries for children under school age.

The West Highland Way path is one mile outside the village and many walkers take the opportunity to visit the wonderful Glengoyne Distillery and take the whiskey tour. For those not walking, the distillery has recently developed a purpose built car park.

The well established Old Mill (see p 17) offers a welcome refuge for lunch, dinner and refreshments, as does the Killearn Hotel (see p15). Wonderful hospitality for visitors and locals alike. Another of the attractions of Killearn for the residents is the ease with which it connects to Glasgow and Stirling, by car or public transport. There is a frequent bus service to both cities with travelling time less than one hour.

Nomination of Jane Richardson from Mulberry Bush Montessori, 12 Balfron Road, Killearn G63 9NJ for NMT Nursery Nurse/Childcare Worker Award 2014.

Nothing indicates successes in early education & childcare better than the children who leave us with a sense of purpose & direction to their lives & who go on to do greatness in

their lives. We feel blessed to have worked with Jane as one of the most extraordinary Childcare Workers in the world, a person whose vision, motivation, inspiration, nurturing & example working with children & families is mapping childcare in the early year’s into the future for all those who work with her & come into contact with her. Jane dynamically combines ample creativity with pragmatic focus & unwavering professionalism. She is quite simply out of this world. Her inner desire is to make the world a better place through her work with children as our future is matched with the work she does on a daily basis with them. Jane genuinely loves and cares for her children, families and the staff team and shows concern beyond working in the classroom, garden and workplace. Jane is a sustaining element in a sea of chaotic change in the early years. She is the very essence & core of what an excellent Early Years Practitioner should be. She has walked her talk meekly & beautifully

with honesty and harmony – a contagious disposition for the rest of us, for the past 20 years and we look forward to many more. Mairi Maciver Clark & the Mulberry Bush Montessori, Killearn team. 25 August 2014

Killearn Kirk was renovated Stthis Mocha month by Mackay’s flooring Services

Old Mill Bar & Restaurant

Although living in a nearby village, this was my first visit to the Old Mill. Originally a weaving mill, the bar and restaurant are both quaint and characterful. The weather was not good enough to eat outside in the Beer Garden, where there is a children’s play area, so my friend and I decided to eat lunch in the restaurant.

WE ARE DIFFERENT!

Mackay’s Flooring Services is a small company run entirely by David Mackay. It’s David that always answers the phone, its David that always comes to your home or business to take the sizes, discuss prices and materials, and finally its David and his work partner that fit all the flooring. Every job every floor from start to finish its one man! This unique approach ensures you the best possible results at all times from something simple like excellent time keeping to 15 years knowledge of all flooring types delivering a stunning finished fitted floor. David also offers a very popular shop at home service where he will visit your home or business with a full range of products, Carpets, Karndean, Laminate or safety Flooring. This service allows you to see all our samples in your home in your lighting and colour scheme at a time that suits you best. Prices can also be given at this time to give you an exact cost for supplying and fitting.

We were extremely surprised at the extent of the menu options, including Mini, A la Carte, Gluten free, Vegetarian, plus a daily Specials board. Most dishes from the main menu are available in children’s portion too. There is something here to suit all budgets. It took us some time to choose, but in the end decided to start with a Woodland Mushroom, Spinach and Parmesan Tart and a Hot Stornaway Black Pudding, Smoked Bacon & New Potato Salad. For main course we settled on the Old Mill Slider Beef Burgers (2 small burgers one with haggis and the other with Texan topping) and the Beer Battered Fillet of Haddock, with hand-cut chips. The portions were generous, and the flavours reflected the restaurant’s use of fresh local produce. We should have stopped there, but the friendly staff convinced us to share a fresh homemade dessert of Hot Sticky Toffee Pudding and ice cream! All in all an excellent experience! Tristan Campbell is the newest addition to the team at ‘TLC catering’ (The Old Mills event catering company)with over 20 years’ experience in event catering and having worked with some of the top chefs in Scotland and London alike you can have confidence that your event will be something special. Halloween 2014 holds in store a special hunting experience for those brave enough to visit Deanston Distillery. Owners Burns Stewart will be offering a fantastic opportunity. Deanston, originally a cotton mill dating back to 1785 has long been associated with spooky sightings and scary noises. It is said that Helen McDougal, wife of the infamous William Burke was attacked and killed at the mill. A ghostly knocking is still banging is still heard today as if from a tormented soul. And distillery

workers have reported strange noises and even ghostly shapes moving amongst the barrels. Distillery visitor centre Manager Peter Semple said: “We are really excited to welcome visitors to the Distillery on our special Halloween Long Weekend. Although we are known for a different popular spirit, we think our customers will love to hear more of our history and the unusual things that happen when the doors lock at night!” Helen McDougall Deanston Tour at 11am and 3pm everyday (Thu 30th of Oct. - Sun 2nd of Nov. £12 per person. The Twankey family live in the town that Stirling Stella almost forgot - Discotopia. Here lives Widow Marge O’Reen Twankey owner of the last laundrette in town. Her oldest daughter, Aladdin, is wildly in love with Prince Jasper but can love survive the grease stains and smell of fabric conditioner? And if love’s trials and tribulations weren’t enough Lady Lilith D’ijin has arrived in town claiming herself the long-lost relative of the Twankey family, and all she wants for Christmas is some rusty old lamp. Will Marge O’Reen ever find a customer to use the services of her laundrette? What will happen when Aladdin rescues that old disco lamp from the cave of wonders? And what evil plan does Lilith have up her bat-winged sleeve. Tickets are on sale now- to book call 01786 466666 / book online at www.macrobert.org TO ENTER visit www.parklifescotland.co.uk

This year has seen major investment in new facilities and services at The Oak Tree Inn in Balmaha. The Fraser Family who own the business have built a new cottage providing further B&B accommodation and opened St Mocha Coffee Shop and Ice Cream Parlour. Parklife Magazine visited to find out more from Stuart and David Fraser, who between them have masterminded the design and creation of these facilities. Stuart, you opened Aber Cottage and St Mocha at Easter, what has been the reaction so far? Incredible, with positive feedback not just about the environment that we have created, but the food and drink that we sell. For St Mocha we use an amazing blend of coffee as well as producing on site both of our

new ice cream brands, Loch Lomond Luxury and Bal-Moo-Ha. The end result is something very special for our St Mocha customers. David, the new building is stunning, built like the Oak Tree with locally quarried stone. Is this look important to you? Yes, we’ve also just added it to the exterior of another cottage Loch Sloy and although it’s certainly not the cheapest option we are mindful that we are in one of the most beautiful parts of Scotland, right in the heart of the National Park and want to make our properties blend into the environment.

Stuart, I notice new logos for the Oak Tree, St Mocha and Village Shop etc. what prompted that? The business has moved on a lot in the last few years and we recently commissioned an updated design that has evolved our identity. We’re thrilled with the end result and it’s looking good not just on the exterior signs but also on our brand new website, menus etc.

Stuart and David Fraser with nephew Archie

So David, what’s next for the family?

The next project is a purpose built loch side microbrewery to house our very own Balmaha Brewing Co. Oak Tree Inn customers kept asking what the local beer was and there wasn’t one! So we started brewing our own. We haven’t

been able to keep up with demand. So when the new microbrewery is finished for summer next year we will be able to brew in much bigger quantities. Stocking our beers in the Village Shop and on tap in The Oak Tree. Craft beers are incredibly popular and we can’t wait to have more of our own versions available. Stuart, all this expansion must be very good news for Balmaha how do you see its future? This is undoubtedly Loch Lomond’s must visit destination. We’re on the West Highland Way with amazing scenery all around us. Our aim is to continually improve the quality of our product and services for customers who come from near and far, we’re very pleased to be able to offer ever more employment to

local people and to support the Park and it’s bodies in their hard work to conserve this beautiful part of Scotland.

overall ‘heart and soul’ of the boxes and we now have a beautiful design, professional food photography, new packaging for the spices and a unique spice tasting guide. All that and we’ve managed to keep the price the same! What plans do you have for the rest of the year and how can we get hold of a box? We now have our new website and online shop where you can buy the boxes and book courses online. We’re also talking to a few shops that we feel are a good match for us.

Yasmin McDonagh started the Scotia Spice Cookery School in 2006, and has been developing her boxes over the last couple of years. Scotia Spice offers enthusiastic cooks the chance to learn authentic Punjabi cooking with know-how that’s been passed down the generations.

We were delighted to be accepted onto the Business Gateway accelerator scheme.

We’re very excited about going to the BBC Good Food Show and Country Living fair in Glasgow for the first time. Of course we’d love to see you at the shows and we’ll be attending lots of local Christmas fairs too.

We gather it’s been a busy year for Scotia Spice, what have you been up to? Yes, I can’t quite believe how much has been going on! Firstly we’ve become a limited company and I’m delighted to be working with Pauline Neison who is looking after logistics and website developments and Stuart McDonagh whose wealth of financial and business knowledge has been invaluable to us.

After a wonderful response last year we’ve spent a lot of time developing our boxes. How have the boxes changed? Top of my wish list in January was to work with a professional photographer and a design company and I’m thrilled with the results. It was vital to me that we kept the

WINDOW CLEANING Interior Furnishings are an Accredited Training Centre in Upholstery (Upholstery Craft Training Centre Scotland)

Learn a new skill, try a daytime or evening leisure class, in the centre of Stirling, over the autumn/winter. Craft skills are learned over time and with practice. There are no quick fixes or magic formulas. Every chair is different, we aim to give you the information required so that you can adapt the skills learned to each individual piece of furniture. We will teach you how to strip back to the frame, repair and reupholster different styles of upholstery from the most basic drop-in seat through to the more complex armchairs and sofas. However, short courses are only a snap-shot taster into the craft. If you are looking for a career in upholstery or soft furnishings then you should be qualified with a high level of skill. The Lomond Lomond School Challenge

2014

Organised and hosted by Lomond School, Helensburgh, for the last twenty years, every school in Scotland is invited to take part in this unique triathlon event. The race comprises a 1.7 mile canoe section in a Canadian canoe setting off from Firkin Point. Competitors then cycle for 1.7 miles down the old A82 before dismounting and completing a 3.5 mile run. This year weather presented tough conditions for the racers with gusting winds on the loch making canoeing difficult. For many it was here, that the race was won and lost, as experienced canoeists had the upper hand. Lomond School teams came first in the Male and Female

races and placed second to Madras College in the Mixed category. The team trophy for schools entering more than three teams was won by Lomond with Queen Anne HS coming second and Lathallan School finishing third. Johanna Urquhart, Lomond School Principal said: “It was lovely to see so many parents and supporters lining the banks of Loch Lomond to cheer on the athletes. All of the participants really gave it their best shot and it was fantastic to see the teamwork and comradery between them.

‘Frankenstein - the Panto’ Written by David Swan. 3rd-6th Dec with a Sat Matinee Village Hall The show is perhaps best described as it was some years ago by the Glasgow Herald theatre critic: “Inspired mayhem… Frankenstein the Panto is pure dead brilliant with knobs on! The script is a marvellous gatherup of cinematic genre, where Dracula, Frankenstein and some St Trinians type schoolgirls come together in a series of hectically daft encounters. There’s some wonderfully awful jokes and some crackingly clever ones and lots of audience participation. It works because it has no pretentions other than to make everyone enjoy themselves” Tickets from the Library in Drymen

She started her business, Lasting Impressions (Clay Prints) in 2005 and expanded to The Unique Company in 2012 with Stuart Dick of Crajen Picture Framing. With an extensive range of personalised gifts including printing on Tshirts, mugs and canvasses, she is now in a position to offer an engraving service with her new laser engraving machine. Louise and her business partner Stuart also run the Tourist Information office. In Milngavie where The Unique Company is based. What inspired you to start up the clay print business? My mother, Alice McFarlane is a well known local potter and we often took handprints in Clay of my own children when they were young. That planted the idea and it expanded from there. How does running the Tourist Information office tie in with your clay print business and personalised gifts? About 85,000 people walk the West Highland Way or part of the way each year. The Tourist Information office is situated at the start of the walk, and often the first port of call for those setting out. Lots of the the walkers like to have a personalised memento of their adventure. They may order anything from a T shirt with the WHW logo to an engraved hip flask. The two businesses tie in nicely together. Are you looking forward to Christmas using the new laser machine to offer a much wider variety of personalised gifts? Indeed, it has been exciting learning about our new machine and it’s potential. From children’s football trophies, Fathers Day hip flasks to engraving a message on a bottle of champagne! Just about anything seems possible, and we are looking forward to lots of unusual requests this Christmas, the options seem endless.

Gardening Tips October November

Planting

With the ideal planting conditions of autumn (warm moist soil), now is the time to plant container grown shrubs, trees, fruit bushes, perennials and bulbs. Even in damp conditions it is worth checking the rootballs of shrubs and trees are adequately moist when planting - heavy rain will not necessarily penetrate a rootball that has been allowed to dry out, so if it feels light, plunge into a bucket of water before planting.

68 | www.parklifescotland.co.uk

Prepare your Soil for next year Your soil is your most precious commodity, so start digging in compost, manure and as much organic matter as you can lay your hands on to replace the goodness in it. The earlier you start the better, especially if your soil is heavy. It can be left in a pretty rough state over the winter when the elements will break the clods down, making spring planting infinitely easier!

Clean out the Greenhouse It really is worth cleaning out your greenhouse thoroughly now your greenhouse crops are over; it will prevent pests from hibernating and leaping into action next spring! Wash the windows inside and out to allow maximum light in over the winter and scrub all benches, fixtures and glazing bars with disinfectant, making sure you hose the whole place down really well, especially dark and dusty corners. For effective fumigation, move all plants outside, shut the windows, light a sulphur candle in the middle of the floor, (retreat at speed!), shut the door and wait until the smoke and fumes have completely dispersed several hours later. Your greenhouse should now be pest free!
