of our creatures and our displays. She then became part of our entertainments team in 2013 where she was responsible for presenting talks and feeds to the public and giving school groups their VIP tours and arts and craft workshops before becoming our most popular member of staff for our VIP sleepovers. She then became our latest aquarist only last month.

Robyn Hunter, 22, is the newest member of our animal care team here at Loch Lomond SEA LIFE Aquarium. She started with us as a volunteer back in 2012 where she worked with the animal care team taking care

The job is not quite as glamorous as many people imagine and it’s not all about feeding our beautiful creatures, in fact only about 5% of their day is spent doing this. The rest of their day is taken up by water changes, back washes, chemistry tests, pump and tank maintenance and animal enrichment. Although it is a very hard and tiring job there are parts of it that make it all worthwhile. Otter training and turtle and shark feeding are obviously some of the favourite jobs but in Robyn’s case it

is getting the chance to spend time with our common octopus who is one of her favourites. If you would like to experience some of the good parts of Robyn’s job then we are now offering our VIP Feeding Experience’s to anyone who like Robyn has a passion for our creatures.

Interview with...

Mairi Buchanan Visitor Services Supervisor at the Lodge Forest Visitor Centre

Mairi grew up in Aberfoyle and has local knowledge of the area. When Mairi started her career with Forestry Commission Scotland she always had an ambition to work within the recreation team and is now based at The Lodge Forest Visitor Centre, Aberfoyle. Her time is spent interacting with visitors and working with staff and volunteers at the Lodge to provide a quality visitor experience.

Forest Park is a major draw in its own right and hundreds of thousands of people come here every year. Now that we have the Top Visitor Attraction, we expect that this will continue. We are aiming to achieve the 5 star Visit Scotland Award this May.

a trail map and staff are on hand to provide information about the Queen Elizabeth Forest Park.

What changes have taken place at the Lodge?

Improvements also include an all ability trail that allows access to the Little Fawn waterfall. Seating has been dotted along the trail to allow for rest and to take in the view. A series of nature play features have been installed on the waterfall trail for all the family to enjoy. Watch out for Hobbit Houses, Hammocks, Den Building and more. Enjoy our new Squirell hide and see our resident red squirells. An external toilet block has been added next to Go Ape to allow for more provision for walkers and visitors keen to take part in the fun hi-wire experience.

The external features of the building have been retained and repaired. A complete internal redesign has transformed the building opening up space and bringing in light. This

How has the refurbishment been received? After the major refurbishment the Lodge has received mostly positive reactions - from local people, visitors and from businesses working in the tourism sector. The Queen Elizabeth

The new Wildlife Watch room has 5 screens which show live footage of Squirells, Ospreys and other birds. The Season has got off to a flying start with the return of the Ospreys Katrine and Drunkie. The spotlight is on Balfron in 2014! Balfron was a tiny village where the Clachan stands now. When Robert Dunmore came to the village in the early 1700’s he saw how powerful the River Endrick was and decided to build a cotton mill on the banks of the river.

best known for it’s famous son, Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson and it’s plethora of amenities in the village. From the High School Swimming Pool

In just two years the village grew from just 55 people to nearly ONE THOUSAND! Many of the street names still have links with cotton. Cotton Street and Dunmore Street, called after Robert Dunmore. Weavers and spinners worked with cotton; so that gives us two more streets - Spinner Street and Weavers’ Winnel. A “Winnel” or vennel is a Scots word for a lane. Balfron has, for many years been

The name Balfron originates from Balfruin - village of sorrow. Legend has it, that one day when the villagers were away from home, wolves came down from the hills and devoured the children. Nowadays many villagers describe Balfron as quiet, peaceful and unspoilt. They also remark on the friendliness of the people.

Park Life Gartmore New Village Hall plans for 2014 Gartmore Village Hall re opened in April of this year and we catch up with their plans for the future. How did you manage to raise the money to build the new hall? Since our first Community Action Plan in 2002, the Village Hall has continually been top of the list of projects that the community of Gartmore have suggested was in need of development. The village hall was a cold, unwelcoming building and not fit for purpose. The Hall Development Group was formed in 2007 and after many days, weeks, months and years of meetings and Grant application form filling, we were fortunate to receive grant funding from the Big Lottery, Forth Valley and Lomond LEADER, the People and Communities Fund, the Climate Challenge Fund, The Gordon Fraser Trust, The Robertson Trust and Scottish Power Green Energy Trust. The refurbishment of the hall started in July 2013 and handover of the keys to Gartmore Community Trust was on Friday 11th April 2014. The hall has now been re-designed with a more practical layout with refurbished main hall, new kitchen, toilets and additional meeting rooms. It has been transformed with both external and internal insulation, underfloor heating, an air source heat pump, new windows and photo-voltaic cells into a warm, energy efficient building. The main hall has remained the same size and an elegant extension has been erected on the right hand side of the building to allow for a cosy

and welcoming entrance. Original stonework in this entrance has amalgamated the old with the new. The whole building has had a new rendering treatment and delivers a massive impact on the Square.

What kind of events will be held there? The hall will be used by local groups for activities such as yoga, pilates, carpet bowls, and after school classes run by Active Stirling. The Community Cinema and Forest Theatre Company will be up and running again soon. We shall continue to hold gigs and already have bookings by Nordic Fiddlers Bloc and Skerryvore later this year. Weddings are proving a popular request with our first one taking place on 31st May 2014.

There must have been a huge celebration on completion what did you do?

The hall was officially opened on Saturday 24th May attended by all in the community along with invited guests from the funding bodies who have actively supported the

re-development of the hall. We had a plethora of musical talent from Gartmore and the surrounding areas performing classical music, jazz, folk, with performances of songs from Les Miserables by Forest Theatre Company and a collection of songs from the Trossachs Community Choir, bringing the whole community together to celebrate the opening of our magnificent Village Hall. Kelly Naylor has been appointed as Coordinator for the hall and bookings can be made through email: or mobile 07775 758361. A village hall website will be available soon. We all love a curry but it’s the accompaniments that turn a nice curry into a Punjabi meal. In my family we always have rice and bread to act as a foil for the lovely aromas and tastes of the main dish, also fresh salad, often tomato and cucumber slices for a fresh contrast and crunch. It’s the yoghurt side dish or Raita though that we all love most. Intended to provide a sharp and sometimes, though not always, cooling addition to the meal there are many much loved variations. Try this one, not only delicious but packed full of goodness too. Ingredients 100g fresh spinach 200g plain yoghurt ½ tsp cumin seeds a pinch of chilli powder salt to taste 1 tbsp oil

Method 1 Steam the spinach in a tablespoon of water until wilted. Drain and set aside to cool. 2 Beat the yoghurt in a bowl until smooth. 3 Heat the oil gently in a small pan and fry the cumin seeds for a few seconds until they give off an aroma. Add the chilli and salt to the pan and swirl. Remove form the heat. 4 Roughly chop the spinach and mix into the yoghurt along with the seasoned oil.

St Mocha

The ancient Gaelic translation of Balmaha is St Mocha, which refers to the passage between the hills in the north of the village. Today St Mocha is the name of the brand new Coffee Shop and Ice Cream Parlour, the latest venture of The Fraser Family, owners of the Oak Tree Inn.

St Mocha is the brainchild of Stuart Fraser who has spent many hours perfecting the new coffee and ice cream brands that are now being served in a brand new building next to the Oak Tree Inn and Village Shop. Built from locally quarried slate St Mocha is a contemporary and homely environment where you can choose from a range of speciality coffee and

tea, soup, snacks and home baking. St Mocha coffee is artisan roasted and served with a double shot. There is plenty of space to chill out with a coffee, meet friend, read or use the provided I-pad to get on-line. A big feature of St Mocha is Loch Lomond Luxury Ice Cream another new brand introduced by the family, with traditional and speciality flavours of Ice Cream available including Pistachio, Lemon & Mango Sorbet, Banoffe Pie, all homemade on-site and gluten free. Typically the new plans and products don’t stop there, with a new range of children’s ice creams launching in the summer. St Mocha Coffee Shop and

Ice Cream Parlour is now open next to The Oak Tree Inn and Village Shop in Balmaha.

Your Holiday, Business Your Choice... Eeenie, meenie, miny, mo... to which holiday park do I go?

Having a holiday criteria tick list as a means of helping you decide where to go is a great idea, but which factors should be the priorities; Location, Accommodation, Facilities...? Pulling into any one of the five holiday parks owned and run by the Wood family it’s clear to see that they put a tick next to each of these things, and whether you choose to stay in one of their hot tub lodges, caravan holiday homes, camping pods, or to bring your own motorhome, you are guaranteed a stay you’ll never forget - after all, they have been creating holiday memories for over 30 years. The British self-catering holiday has come a long way from the days of carry on camping style vacations and since

All parks operate family and pet friendly policies and are well placed to satisfy the needs of both parties with many guests choosing to purchase their very own holiday home following a stay in one of these accommodating and well maintained parks. Interview with... Kenny Stewart of Scotia Gardens I set up Scotia Gardens in January 2000 as it is all I had ever wanted to do since I was a boy. The business has gone from strength to strength over the years and has diversified into the company it is now carrying different aspects of work including drainage, Construction, Landscaping and Equestrian services. When did you branch into the construction side of business? Branching into ground works and construction has really evolved over the last 5 years as we have been asked to be involved in different construction projects such as private roads, foundations car parks and house renovations and with the kit we have invested in and the knowledge and skills we have gathered over the years it seemed to be a natural progression for the business.

What kind of project do you enjoy most? I like when we are able to create the garden that the client is looking for, whether it is reconstructing and old garden or the creation of a new garden from scratch. There are so many different construction materials available now which allows us to create some great gardens. We also carry out a lot of drainage and I like the problem solving part where there is a drainage problem and we create the solution to solve it allowing the land or the garden to be usable once again.

Have you any plans to branch into other areas?

Scotia Gardens will be able to advise and carry out the works.

I would like to get involved in more drainage projects. The winter that we just experienced has been one of the wettest I can recall. It has highlighted the need for drainage to be in place along with the cleaning of existing ditches as they are forcasting wetter winters. We have a range of excavators available along with the knowledge to carry out large or small drainage jobs. Whether it’s is draining an existing lawn, cleaning ditches or installing new field drains,

Is 2014 looking to be a good year? 2014 has been great so far We have been lucky to be involved with some great projects with great finished products. I am looking forward to the second half of the year as there are a variety of construction, drainage and garden construction works on the books already. We just need the good weather to go with it! Your pulley is over the wire, blue safety line connected through it, red attached behind. All you need to do now is psyche yourself up and step off. Everyone has their own technique to launching themselves into thin air: maybe you count down from three; or perhaps you sit into your harness and drop; or maybe you just stride off confidently. Whatever your style, you can forget it when you reach the last zipline at Go Ape Aberfoyle – it’s in a league of its own. New rules apply. A dizzying 120ft (36.5 metres) high and 426 metres long, this zip is one of the longest in the UK. It’s the grand finale of the Aberfoyle Go Ape experience, and what an exhilarating, memorable finish it is.

The zipwire doesn’t just sound long when you reel off the numbers. It looks long. It feels long. On the platform there’s a small CCTV screen showing you the landing site, so you can check it’s clear. You can’t see it otherwise, it’s so far away. Stepping out into thin air is bad enough, but not knowing where you’re going to land is a true test of your bottle.

Perhaps you need some reassurance before you jump. Don’t worry, the Aberfoyle zip is a pretty amazing feat of engineering. The wire is made of several triangular steel strands, wrapped tightly around a nylon core, which makes it smooth so you don’t have a bumpy ride. And even if you had a full Scottish breakfast, you needn’t worry about it snapping under your weight. It’s strong enough to hold four and half tonnes of weight – that’s like hanging a Land Rover from the middle of the line. And then it’s time to start thinking about your graceful landing. With your weight pulling the wire down, the zip curves up at the end, which has a stopping effect, and the instructors have braking lines that can be attached to the wire to slow people down. As this is the end of the course, this is your last chance to land beautifully, looking like a pro. You’ve just ridden one of the longest zipwires in the UK. So make sure the landing lives up to the high standards set by the wire – and make it a good one! For more information and to book visit or call 0845 643 9215

Lomond School May 2014

Going into 3rd Year? Get more choice for National 4 and 5 at Lomond pigeonhole their Higher exam choices to be studied in S5 and 6. The change will present students with new, challenging material and an increased focus on the skills emphasised in the Curriculum for Excellence. However, while the depth of study for each subject will be expanded, the number of exams taken in S4 will go from 8 to only 5 or 6 in many secondary schools. MORE CHOICE: Lomond School offers a wide selection of subjects that help to nurture your child's talents

August 2014 will mark the start of another school year for children and families in Scotland. For students entering S3, there are big changes on the horizon with the launch of the new National 4 and 5 curriculum and exams. Scotland’s education system has seen a number of significant changes over the past

several years but the change from Standard Grade and Intermediate 1 and 2 to National 4 and 5 examinations is significant in that it will dramatically reduce the breadth of subjects on offer to many students, and therefore,

Lomond School has given significant thought to the implementation of the National 5 programme and in contrast to most local schools, Lomond students will continue to select 8 subjects to study in S4. The School is keeping with the current format of subject choice for pupils at the end of S2 and students will join a two year approach to a broad range of National 5 examinations. This is also the choice of every other independent school in Scotland.

“It is important to offer students as broad a range of subjects for National 4 and 5 to enable the maximum choice for Higher in S5 and S6. We feel that our students need exposure to many different concepts as they can then bring these together more powerfully for a mature understanding in S5 and S6 as they prepare for entry to University, Further Education and employment pathways.” - Lomond School Headmaster, Simon Mills If you would like to find out more about Lomond School and the strategy for National 4 and 5 please contact admissions@ or call T: 01436 672 476.

Why accept 5 when you can have 8? Lomond School is providing the opportunity for students studying National 4 and 5 to sit 8 subjects in S4. In doing so we offer your child the strongest preparation for Higher and their future. Students will pick from a range of over 18 subjects including new subjects for 2014: • Drama • Health & Food Technology With academic results 3 times higher than the national average and a wide range of sports and extra-curricular opportunities, Lomond School delivers. Drymen Tiling Business

At Drymen Tiling I always use the full range of BAL tiling products, the leading brand of professional tiling adhesives and grouts for all tiling applications. BAL micromax sealants and grouts protect against bacteria and black mould and contain Microban antimicrobial protection: for extra hygiene. I also use Topps Tiles, which is the one of the UK’s leading tile specialists. Topps Tiles have an outstanding range of tiles and associated products at prices to suit all everyone. I am also currently working on a range of slate tableware products which has been commissioned by the Drymen Inn. These plates are all handmade from large pieces of slate by myself, from the cutting to the shaping and smoothing and

finally the sealing. Keep an eye on the Drymen Tiling Facebook page for step by step pictures of the work when they are completed. I have also made contact in recent weeks with a local glass maker who produces bespoke handmade glass tiles. These tiles would looks fantastic on any wall, kitchen or bathroom, or even to frame a bathroom mirror.
