Freelance Personal Trainer, Liz Ewing is based at Buchanan Arms Leisure Club where she works with clients on a one-to-one basis. Liz says “it’s not just about working with a client for that 1 or 2 hours a week in the gym, it’s encouraging and coaching them for the remaining hours of the week and looking at their overall lifestyle, working with them not only on their fitness but nutrition as well and ensuring they achieve their goals”. Liz qualified in Personal Training and Sports Therapy in 2004 and has recently added Kettlebell Instructor to this. Previously, Liz worked in the property business but decided that her passion for fitness was something that she wanted to pursue and share with others. She has worked in various health clubs within Glasgow, before setting up her own business. As well as Personal Training, Liz works as a Sports Massage Therapist and uses various massage techniques to help alleviate the stress and tension which builds up in the muscles and connective tissues. After what seemed like weeks but was probably only days of rain, the morning of 1 October dawned misty with the sun trying to get through, and the sun won. By late morning the sky was blue, the sun shone, the colours just beginning to change, it was the most wonderful autumnal day. The weather bode well for a great afternoon at the Buchanan Arms Hotel. It was the Park Life and Moon of Drymen sellout charity fashion show lunch. By 12.30 the Clairinch Suite was abuzz, ladies sipping champagne, buying raffle tickets, browsing the stalls with a view to some retail therapy and catching up with old friends. The afternoon was hosted by the very talented Edward Reid of Britain’s Got Talent. Not only a great singer and performer, his ‘patter’ was unequalled. Edward began by introducing Katrina of Park Life Magazine who outlined the afternoon’s programme and announced that ticket sales and raffle had so far raised a resounding £2000 before we even got started! A Goody bag was on the table for each guest with Fizz, Chocolates and vouchers to take home.

A short but very personal and moving presentation on the wonderful services that Robin house provides to very sick babies and children and their families was then given by Amanda Reid. Amanda is Chaplain at Robin House in Balloch. Lunch was chicken breast with fresh vegetables and fondant potato, followed by meringue with seasonal berries, then coffee, all served by the Buchanan Arms’ young friendly and competent staff. During lunch, the fabulous models from Moon of Drymen glided round the tables wearing the Autumn Winter collections currently on sale in Moon. This was a great opportunity to talk to the models about the different outfits, the quality, the fit, the price. All lovely and fashionable in great colour combinations. Warm separates, rain jackets, gilets, sweaters, dresses, And of course terrific accessories, hats, scarves, handbags, not to

Yet more money was raised with everybody participating with great hilarity in the ‘parlour games‘ initiated by host Edward and interspersed with him singing some great songs. The Park Life team had a surprise up their sleeve with a dress made out of hundreds of pages from the magazines. This was kindly modelled by Louise MacFarlane, designed and made by Traci of Peaches Bridal wear with the fundraising idea of guess how many pages made the dress to win a star prize! Then it was time for the Auction which proved very competitive with fierce bidding for several items kindly donated to this great cause. £3830 was the final total raised on the day with £3000 going to Robin House and £830 to Think Pink Scotland. A nurturing enviroment for our children provided by Heron House With the current seasonal changes, inclement weather has undeterred us from outdoor play and learning. We have picked brambles, made jam, collected leaves, twigs, sticks and conkers, for sensory games & craft projects. We dressed ourselves in our new fleece lined waterproofs and wellies too! Puddle jumping was exciting. In The Glen we threw sticks into the stream and inside our own playrooms we made our very own “Outside In“ areas. Ongoing are our many dialogues about changes, weather and seasons. The maths and language learned through all of this playing has been fun.

Together with the children we are planning our annual Christmas Show, “Whoops A Daisy Angel” which will be held in Killearn Village Hall the week before Christmas. Our children are actively involved in all aspects of our show, from prop design, scenery making to advertising and selecting cast and band members. The Heron House Christmas show is fun and has always been a huge success for the children. This gives them a sense of achievement after their performance which is something they will do already, look back on with pride. Teas/

Park Life’s Tips to buying & looking after your Christmas Tree BUYING YOUR TREE

If possible, buy a freshly-cut tree from a reputable nursery, see below for Duff Christmas Trees, Tartan Timber p68, The Lodge Forest Visitor Centre p13. If you want to keep your Christmas tree potted and in the house after Christmas, a Norfolk Island pine would be the best choice. Check with a local florist or nursery for your area.

Watering is critical. A freshly-cut tree can consume a gallon of water in 24 hours! Fill the tree stand with water and keep it filled. Indoors, keep the tree away from heating ducts or other heat sources. In fact, the lower the temperature, the better the tree will do.

CARING FOR THE TREE

When you bring your tree home, saw a couple inches off the bottom of the trunk before setting in water. When trees are cut, pitch oozes out and seals the pores. By sawing off the base, you will open up the pores, and the tree will be able to absorb water.

Lomond’s Senior Cricket Team Win ‘Scottish Team of the Year 2016’ Lomond School’s Senior Cricket Team have been honoured by the receipt of the XL Club’s Scottish Team of the Year Award. The XL—or Forty—Club is an adult Cricket Club which operates all over the UK and plays against schools, colleges and youth teams. Its players have to be over 40 years of age, and the aim is to develop youth cricket with meaningful matches against very experienced cricketers. Lomond’s Captain of Cricket, James Guy, Coach, Paul Davies, and Depute Head/Teacher in Charge of Cricket, Alister Minnis, travelled last week to The Kia Oval cricket ground in London to receive their award from Matthew Fleming, President of the MCC, at an impressive awards dinner. As well as the award, they had a tour of the

famous ground and met many leading figures from the world of cricket. Matthew Fleming was an excellent speaker. A former player for Kent and England, he was also the greatnephew of James Bond author, Ian Fleming, and was hugely entertaining. There was a great reception for James as he collected the award, as many appreciated the effort made to attend the event. The match report of the fixture against Lomond contained the following lines: ‘In summary, Lomond’s Spirit of Cricket was exemplary. In playing ability, the batting was stronger than the bowling; however, it must be noted that they were not frightened to give four very young bowlers 13 overs against a very strong Forty Club

batting lineup. Their fielding was excellent. James Guy captained the side very well, setting good fields and never giving up despite the pressure on both his bowlers and fielders.’ With the same side intact for the 2017 season, the boys will be resuming nets this week and will be looking forward to living up to their award next year and to continuing to play their cricket within the Spirit of the Game.

Shop manager, Anna, is passionate about championing local food suppliers, many of whom are relatively new to the foodie scene. “Benview prides itself in being supportive of the local community. We are very lucky to be neighbours with so many innovative entrepreneurs.” She has recently sourced a fantastic range of seafood charcuterie from Campsie Glen Smoke House, a small family-run business in Kirkintilloch. Graham firmly believes that Benview is able to offer customers something different. “Being an independent retailer, we have the freedom to cherry pick our suppliers and we enjoy hearing stories of where the food comes

from and how it’s made. Provenance is important. We have good relationships with producers who make wonderful produce in small numbers. For example, the jars of poached chillies in olive oil come from Foragers, just up the road – we chat to Jo and compare our chilli harvests. We know our customers want to buy quality produce and they want to buy Scottish, so that’s what we sell.” This applies to the garden plants as well as the food: “We grow the majority of our nursery stock ourselves here in Stirlingshire so you know the plants you buy at Benview are suitable for Scottish gardens. We also believe in providing customers with a high level of service and always go the extra mile to help them. Our staff are always on hand with good advice and a smile. We certainly know our onions!”.

Park Life Review The Soup Dragon at Tir na nOg On a crisp October morning after an invigorating walk we decided to visit The Soup Dragon CafĂŠ, as even the name was appealing and we were looking forward to a heart warming bowl of flavoursome soup, but to our great delight there was so much more than the name suggested! On arrival, though quiet, the welcome was very friendly. The menus were on the rustic wooden table and in addition there was a huge colourful chalk board with an amazing array of alternative food and drink options. After ordering

I eventually decided on a Penne pasta Al Forno with tomato sauce and mozzarella and my friend opted for the parsnip and spice soup accompanied with cheese and chutney toasted sandwich served with a side salad. The servings were generous, piping hot and clearly all just freshly prepared by their Italian chef. As we ate the cafĂŠ soon filled up and there was a lovely buzz about the place.

IT’S ALL ABOUT PERSONAL SERVICE & ONE TO ONE NEGOTIATIONS With the advent of the internet and the proliferation of online estate agents sellers are finding difficulties in choosing who to instruct in the sale of their property. Many of the online agents make claims of saving thousands of pounds in fees which initially attracts many sellers to these claims. With the choice between online agents or a traditional high street agent the matter is clear. There is no doubt that sellers should instruct a traditional agent in the local area who will not only give a better service from being open usually 7 days a week but will have much more in-depth local

knowledge of the property, the local sales evidence and also in many cases information on the buyers who have often offered for similar properties with the agents knowing their strengths and weaknesses. The local agent will also provide a negotiated sales service to obtain the best price for the house often being able to negotiate face to face with the buyer. Whereas the internet agent for their cut price fee will only list the property on internet portals and could never afford to give the level of service provided by the traditional agent. In the final analysis the selling price comes down to the agent who can not only talk the talk but can walk the walk often being able to add thousands to the asking price through either closing dates or knowing the historic position of the purchaser, how much they need to borrow, the value of their existing property all of which is rarely known by the internet agent.

It all comes down to personal service and one to one negotiation. So where the internet agents claims to save thousand on fees there is no doubt they will lose many more thousands on the sale price and unfortunately after the fact of the sale it is too late to start again the money is lost and the purchaser has often achieved the best deal. There are no free lunches – pay peanuts and you will get monkeys with resultant consequences. Choose the agent with whom you are most comfortable, not the one who tries to destroy his competition or the one who gives you the cheapest fee – the ultimate sale price is the important factor and the one to one negotiation in the final analysis is the greatest critical factor. At G & S we often structure our fees on performance and will charge our fees commensurate on the outcome of a sale price which means our fees are incentivised to perform.
