BUSINESS

We are delighted to be working with Liz Melville Social Media to bring you a brand new, fun, business networking group in the Park Life area. Since moving to Balfron recently, Liz had become increasingly frustrated by having to travel to Glasgow or Stirling for networking opportunities. Knowing that Katrina had previously run popular business networking for Park Life Magazine, Liz approached her with the idea of starting a new group, for business owners in the local villages and areas surrounding the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. And so Business Blether was born! Based on the name Liz had used for a Twitter networking group she runs every Thursday #SocialBlether – Katrina and Liz felt that a ‘blether’ was just the right word for their new, informal network!

Business Blether monthly meetings now up and running with Liz Melville Social Media and Park Life

Business Park Life YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS!

Interview and Testimonial with...

Liz Anderson

A Very Happy Customer of The Paint Shed How did you find out about the Paint Shed? I had found the paint I wanted to use

I can see from your testimonial that you will be spreading the word in Kintyre? Ive been telling friends and family all about it as we do have problems with deliveries in this neck of the woods so it looks like we are all sorted for our painting needs if only other companies were as efficient.

Liz’s Testimonial

and it was expensive so I searched

“YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS!”

the internet for the best price and

OK so needed some Butinox stain and primer for my brand new shed had a long trawl through the internet for a suitable website that didn’t penalise me for living in Kintyre (Muasdale way up on a hill to be exact), some websites treat you as if they are delivering to

the Paint Shed was far cheaper than others. I was also expecting a high delivery charge as Tarbert is quite a bit away from the city so I was delighted to find out it was free with my delivery!

some far flung remote wilderness, yeah ok so we are a wee bit out of the way but no The Paint Shed was the clear winner!! I ordered my Butinox and Primer at 10:12 on Monday 19th of May. Expecting the usual 5 - 7 day delay i was more than impressed that THE NEXT DAY yes folks the NEXT day!! I met the delivery driver at the bottom of my road at 08:30 on Tuesday the 20th of May with my delivery!!!! Your name will be spread across Kintyre for your prompt nae insanely prompt service!! puts the Spotlight on Dr Rowardennan village is part of the West Highland Way which attracts 70,000 walkers every year from all corners of the world. Home to an excellent Youth Hostel and The Rowardennan Hotel. This is the base of Ben Lomond which is a Munro (scottish mountain over 3,000 feet high) and a decent climb if reasonably fit. Leaving Rowardennan heading for Drymen, we reach Balmaha, a thriving village on the banks of Loch Lomond. Stop for award winning cuisine and friendly welcome at the Oak Tree Inn or excellent coffee and home made ice cream at the newly opened St Mocha coffee shop. The busy, wellstocked Village Shop is a boon for locals and visitors alike. If Ben Lomond is a climb too far, then the Conic Hill at Balmaha is a good walk of around two hours with stunning views of Loch Lomond and surrounding countryside. Onwards to Drymen in the heart of the Trossachs, a friendly village with numerous facilities and the oldest pub in Scotland, the well known Clachan Bar

Business rymen, Balmaha & Rowardennan & Restaurant! The row of shops on the Main Street have been refurbished and reopened with Moon for modern ladies clothing and accessories, Stewarts of Drymen Gift & Coffee Shop, and Skoosh has new management. The ever popular Buchanan Arms Hotel has changed hands and has a new lease of life with development of the Spa and refurbishment. (see pg 19 & 20). The award winning butcher, the Village Shop, the Drymen pottery/Ealain Gallery, The Drymen Inn, The Winnock Hotel and not forgetting the Public Library all contribute to the wellbeing of Drymen and we look forward to welcoming Davidson’s Chemist (see pg 25) Two miles out of Drymen is Tir na nOg which offers various therapies, gift shop and cafe. The cafe is now called Aurora Cafe and has been lovingly refurbished. After the devastating fire last year Tir na nOg is once again thriving. This small piece of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park from Rowardennan to Drymen is a little gem for all to enjoy.

LocalBusiness Profiles • Local Profiles • Local Profiles Heather Munro Drymen Guide Leader. Heather has been involved with the guides for 20 years and has spent 10 of those with the Drymen Guides and was instrumental in setting up the new Rainbow unit for 5-7years old. She fulfilled one of her guiding ambitions in 2010 the Centenary Guiding Year by taking her unit to Switzerland to visit the Guiding World Centre in Adelboden. The 1st Drymen Brownies have enjoyed, a great year with lots of arts and crafts and outdoor activities at our meetings every Wednesday night. We have 15 brownies but alas with the pending birth of Sally’s first baby we are now back to only one leader. If anyone in the community would

like to step up and help run the Brownie unit, I would be delighted to welcome you, otherwise the Brownie unit will have to be folded and this will have an impact on the whole guiding movement in Drymen. If a weekly involvement is too much we could discuss shortening the Brownie calendar perhaps having

Drymen Guide Unit enjoys an action-packed adventure at galloway Guides from Drymen joined over 350 Guides and Senior Section members, aged 10 – 19, for an action-packed weekend at Galloway Activity Centre on 24/25 May. Adventure 2014 saw girls take over Galloway Activity Centre for a weekend of fun and exciting outdoors activities. Girlguiding Scotland is delighted to have, with the help of Cashback for Communities funding, delivered affordable adventure events, at four different locations across Scotland, to over 1700 girls and young women who may not otherwise have had this opportunity. Adventure 2014 enabled the Guides and Senior Section members to challenge themselves, learn new skills and try out new activities. Activities included sailing, kayaking, windsurfing, wobble boarding, archery, climbing, abseiling, zip line, tree climbing, mountain biking, night line, orienteering and many more. Rachel Milne, age 12, Drymen Guide Unit, said: “I loved Adventure 2014. It has made me more confident; I have made new friends and tried things that I wouldn’t have ever done.” Heather Munro, Leader, added: “This has been an amazing event and the girls had a great time meeting new friends, learning a few new skills and getting the opportunity to try out some very adventurous things they’d never tried before.” During the weekend a total of 1700 girls and young women took part in Adventure 2014 at Galloway Activity Centre, Netherurd Training and Activity Centre (The Scottish Borders), Fordell Firs (Fife) and Fairburn Activity Centre (Ross-Shire). Mairi McGinn

of Moon, Drymen Mairi has been in the fashion industry from the age of 19 and has recently opened a clothing shop Moon on Main Street Drymen where it has been well received and very busy. We get the chance to catch up with her and find out what it is she loves about the fashion business.

Have you always had an interest in fashion? Like most peoples careers I didn’t choose it ,it just seemed to be a natural progression from the work I was doing in wholesale fashion. At that time there were a lot more independent retailers in Scotland and the fashion industry here was vibrant and exciting, unfortunately with the

arrival of oversized shopping centres filled with multiples the decline in the number of the independent retailers began. Over the last couple of years there has been a real feeling of disappointment in what the high street has to offer ,people are ready for change , something a bit different. Its my view that as the economy steadily improves we will see an increase again in the independent retail market which will make the high street interesting and judging by the great response I’ve had here at Moon it will be a welcome change

Is it hard to choose and order clothing so far in advance? Buying the stock is great ,visiting the shows in London , seeing all the new brands and what’s going to be

big the following year, but that’s the most familiar side for me as it is where I started at 19. About 50% of the stock is forward ordered about 6 to 9 months in advance and 50 % from stock houses ,that gives me a bit of flexibility for the variables . I’m really enjoying having a business in Drymen its such a personal experience very different to working in large towns and cities there is such a great feeling of community here and I hope the customers coming into Moon enjoy that.

Review - The Winnock Hotel Business meals were freshly prepared and tasted delicious . For dessert I was very tempted by the Orkney fudge cheesecake, it sounded to die for but I just couldn’t as I was too full from my main course! I went for a cappuccino while my daughter had chocolate brownie which was beautifully presented with cream, Ice cream and a strawberry for decoration and could have easily passed for an adult dessert . Arriving on a lovely summers day for lunch we were given an option to sit outside or inside which was appreciated. Both areas had a lovely busy atmosphere but we decided to sit inside. The friendly/welcoming staff brought menus/specials of the day over to us and took our drinks order. My daughter decided to go for the kids Burger and chips(only £2.95!) whilst I opted for the omelette. Both

and they promised to do their best. And they most certainly did. They created a special birthday dinner menu for us and even provided some complimentary bottles of wine. The food was absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. The service from the staff in the restaurant was brilliant - nothing was too much trouble - even switching out the lights in the restaurant to bring in the birthday cake we’d provided. Excellent value for money. Would highly recommend!

Trip Advisor Review “Fantastic meal with outstanding service” I booked a table for 16 people to celebrate my mother’s 80th birthday. Mum is known to the hotel management and I asked them to help make it a special night for her

Interview with...

Ian Buick

Scottish Director of Nordfield Properties Ltd, owner of the BEST WESTERN Buchanan Arms Hotel and Spa The Hotel has changed hands a few times over the years what are the new owners hoping to add to the Buchanan Arms? Even before Nordfield Properties acquired the BEST WESTERN Buchanan Arm Hotel we realized that the hotel suffered from under investment for a period of years. The many years of experience of the Directors of owning and operating hotels in Scotland and abroad helped us to assess the requirements quickly and we started within a week with the resurfacing of the car parks, essential roof and heating repairs and a huge list of improvement works, they include the redesign of

20 | www.parklifescotland.co.uk

the Leisure Club, the upgrade of the hotels winter garden with stylish new lighting and soft furnishing featuring tweeds and plaids to place emphasis on Scottish quality products. We also completed the refurbishment of 7 bedrooms within the main original building of the hotel, again soft heather colours and quality tweeds where used to give this traditional feel with a modern twist. We thank our design company, select furnishings for their complete support throughout this project Additionally to this the hotel will reduce its carbon foot print by changing over to a biomass boiler within the next few weeks, this will mean the hotels heating, hot water and the air handling and heating

of our Haven leisure club will be supplied by sustainable wood pellets. Over the quieter winter months we will be creating a coffee and gift shop with an outside play area, we look forward to the opening just before Easter 2015 to attract and keep more visitors in Drymen. We are confident with the full commitment and investment of us the BEST WESTERN Buchanan Arms Hotel will proper for many years to come, we see already substantial upturn in the hotels wedding numbers. A hotel like the BEST WESTERN Buchanan Arms Hotel cannot prosper as a business or indeed meet and exceed the expectations of our guests unless we, as the new owners, commit ourselves to the hotel for the

long term, which we do willingly

Everyone loves a Spa and The Haven Spa has been a huge success is there any expansion planned? We are heavily committee to the development and expansion of the leisure/spa area. Already, along with our partners at Haven Spa, we have registered the Trade name of ‘The Haven Spa and Leisure Club’ by which this area will now be known within the hotel and for marketing purposes. Already we have upgraded the reception area, had the pool area redesigned, installed led the pool lighting, created a welcoming pool side bistro and installed new gym equipment. We also addressed issues of health and safety and installed panic buttons on the poolside to summon help should one of guests get into trouble.

We revised our leisure club membership fees to ensure our most loyal members will always pay the lowest fees and this already showed a positive impact on the membership numbers of the haven leisure Club We are now in a position to offer ‘pampering packages’, not only to our brides and bridesmaids, but to other visitors looking for a few fun days with bespoke treatments tied into accommodation, wine and dine packages. We have not forgotten our male guests as we can also offer them ‘pampering packages’ including the best wet shave in the area. Already for the future we are intending to install a Hot tub within an outside relaxation area (the infrastructure is already in place for this), new steam room and specialised haman rooms for new mud treatments!!! In two years’ time we are already planning the building of a woodland spa with 4 four additional treatment rooms and a second relaxation

room with a log burning stove for these cold winter months. It is our ambition to build the ‘Haven Spa and Leisure Club’ into a nationally recognised wellness centre.

What do you love about working in Loch Lomond and The Trossachs area? The Loch Lomond and Trossachs area is without a doubt one of Scotland’s treasures and we feel privileged to be here because of the Buchanan Arms. We work and live in beautiful unspoilt countryside, we are on the famous West Highland Way, and welcome numerous wedding functions throughout the year who enjoy our wonderful hospitality. Our crowning glory, especially for bridal parties is out ‘Viewpoint’ opposite the hotel with panoramic views towards Loch Lomond, an amazing backdrop for wedding photographs.

The Fire Service needs you! Who turns up in a fire engine when a call for help is made? A firefighter of course. In the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park area from Balloch to Killin, Balfron, Aberfoyle, Callander, Doune, Dunblane, Crianlarich and Tyndrum, it could easily be somebody you know. All these fire stations are crewed by Retained Duty System (RDS) firefighters. These are individuals who live or work close to specific community fire stations and can commit to providing an emergency response service for that station. Most of them are women and men whose primary employment is in another field, but in addition to that, they provide the same range of emergency service as their full time firefighter colleagues in some of Scotland’s smaller towns and rural villages.

Large Goods Vehicle driving – the fire service also provides development in the areas of management and leadership, for those seeking additional responsibility.

Being a retained firefighter is a fulfilling role that allows you to develop additional skills and earn extra cash whilst providing an invaluable lifesaving service to your community.

What’s in it for you?

To become an RDS Firefighter, you must: • Be 18 years of age or over • Be Physically fit and in good health • Have good unaided vision and colour perception • Be seriously interested in helping to provide an invaluable emergency service for your local community. • Have the express permission of your primary employer to become an RDS Firefighter If you have the flexibility and commitment to be a retained firefighter and would like more information, Watch Manager Scott is available at Balfron fire station 01360 441019 on Monday between 7pm and 9pm or email gary.scott@firescotland.co.uk Applications must be submitted online at www.myjobscotland.gov.uk

You must be available to respond to emergency calls from your home, or place of work (by employer agreement), at any time of the day or night within 5-8 minutes of emergency call-outs, however, if you do not meet these requirements your application may still be considered. To ensure you maintain the relevant knowledge and skills required for the role, you will be required to attend your station for a 2-3 hour session each week. In return you will be paid a retainer fee along with additional payments for every incident and training night you attend.

Could you do it? As an RDS Firefighter your role would be challenging and demanding. There are stressful and hazardous situations to be faced and you will be required to deal with these while providing comfort and reassurance to members of the community. Call rates vary from station to station with some retained stations responding to over 800 calls a year and others responding to less than 50. The role of the fire and rescue service has changed over recent years, with firefighters working to reduce the number of fires, fire related deaths and injuries through a range of Community Fire Safety initiatives. Many retained firefighters play an important role within their communities, by helping to promote fire safety messages, giving fire safety advice to schools and other organisations as well as carrying out free home fire safety visits. The training you receive allows you to learn new skills such as First Aid and Up the tower is M. Hailstones, then left to right, D Telfer, D Hallyburton, A More, D Brown, A Hailstone, G Scott.

Gardening Tips Weeding

Boring but vital. Keep on top of weeds in borders, the vegetable garden and all your pots and containers. Little and often will reduce what will become a Herculean task if left to spiral out of control. Weeds not only look messy but use valuable moisture in the ground. The best and easiest way to weed is to use a Dutch hoe which will cut the weeds just below the surface. Weeding on a sunny day will ensure weeds left on the surface dry out and die in the warmth.

At Benview Garden Centre, you’ll find the very best local plants and produce. Many of our plants and shrubs are grown on-site, so they are perfectly suited to the local climate. Ask our staff for expert tips on how to look after them. We grow our own fruit and vegetables too. Right now you can pick your own tomatoes, lettuce etc from our greenhouses, or enjoy our fantastic freshly picked strawberries, or stock up from our Farm Shop. You can’t get any fresher! And if you’re looking for something a little different, visit our new Gift Shop before enjoying a cuppa and cake in the coffee shop next door.

01786 466666 | WWW.MACROBERT.ORG Steps to a healthier you in 2014 As our Aberfoyle walk enjoys its one year anniversary we reflect on a healthy 2014 so far…

Walk in the Park makes walking fun and accessible for everyone. Our walks are led by trained leaders and take place in Balloch, Aberfoyle, Callander and Killin. Over the last few years we have doubled the number of weekly walks available. Why not join over 100 other walkers and take the first steps to a healthier you in 2014? Walks last between 30 and 45 minutes. You can choose to walk at a pace which suits you depending on how you are feeling. Guidelines recommend adults need to be active for at least 30 minutes a day. The benefits of regular walking include having more energy, stronger muscles, more control over your weight, a better night’s sleep, improved confidence and a lower risk of heart disease or stroke. Our routes are mostly flat, with slight inclines, and good walking surfaces. Most of them are suitable for wheelchairs or buggies. We have a varied and interesting programme of walks; some are around the town, others in the countryside. The walks are free – you just need a pair of comfortable shoes or boots and appropriate clothing for the weather. Some optional social time is offered in a local cafe afterwards (refreshments at own cost). If you have any questions please contact our coordinator: Cathy Scott on 01877 330055 or 01389 727748, email: cathy.scott@lochlomond-trossachs.org Walk in the Park is run by the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs Countryside Trust and is supported by Paths for All, Forestry Commission Scotland, NHS Scotland, Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park Authority and the ScottishPower Foundation.

Lomond School welcomes new Principal for 2014 This year Lomond School will be embarking on a new phase as the school welcomes new Principal, Johanna Urquhart. Johanna will join Lomond for the start of term in August 2014 and is looking forward to moving to Helensburgh.

“At the end of July my husband James, our two young sons and I will be moving to Helensburgh and we are all very excited. I spent much of my childhood on and around Loch Lomond - walking, cycling, canoeing, boating and water ski-ing. I have so many happy memories of this time and the outdoor adventures and opportunities that this area provided.” Before applying for the post Johanna visited and toured the school. “Having spent most of my career in the east of Scotland, I had never visited Lomond School and was keen

to establish whether the school’s values would fit with my own and would my boys be happy there? The minute I walked into the Junior School’s Clarendon building I knew that my boys would love it. The historic architecture has been lovingly restored

retaining all of its period features yet incorporating all of the modern technology and facilities needed for education in the 21st century. Every classroom is bright, colourful and you know instantly that this, along with the teachers who have created these wonderful displays, will inspire creativity in young and curious minds.” Johanna worked as Head of Maths and IT at The Waid Academy, Anstruther and then Deputy Head at Breadalbane Academy in Aberfeldy. For the past 6 years she has been Academic Depute Head at George Watson’s College in Edinburgh. Her academic achievements include a Bachelor of Science Degree with Honours in Mathematics and Statistics and a Masters Degree in Education, specialising in Leadership and Management. “I have been lucky to have learnt my craft in good schools with great teachers. However, it was only

when I moved to the post of Deputy Head at George Watson’s College, Edinburgh that I really understood the difference that an independent education can make. Lomond School offers a huge diversity of non-academic activities from traditional sports, Duke of Edinburgh Awards, clubs and societies such as debating and Young Engineers through to a strong commitment to outdoor education. This allows pupils to develop skills such as leadership, teamwork, creativity and communication to name but a few, as well as developing their confidence and self-esteem.”

The Urquharts will move to Helensburgh at the beginning of August and Johanna will begin her role as Principal of Lomond School before the school returns from the summer Followbreak us onon the 26th August. | 57

Book Review Bush-Hog Tails By Victoria Harwood

Bush-hog Tails is a story about a lovable new kind of creature. From the first sighting of the little Bush-hog he can often be mistaken as a hedgehog but this cute thing is in fact nothing like a hedgehog! He is smaller, extremely clever, can speak many languages and has metal spikes which only really come out if the Bush-hog is afraid. Bushy meets a cat called Fluffy who attempts to eat him but soon comes to realise that it won’t be that easy! Instead they become good friends and embark on many adventures together, meeting other animals and making new friends. The author, Victoria Harwood, has wanted to write a book ever since she was a child. She hopes that the characters she has worked so hard on touch’s the hearts of children and adults. Victoria has done all the illustrations herself using charcoal and crayon then carefully scanning them to avoid smudging ready for the publication of the books. Victoria has copies of her first book in other countries including an English school in Kuwait. Her stories have magic, animal education and humour included in the hope that they will delight and inspire children.

“Perfect place a must visit!” I don’t normally use Trip Advisor however I felt it necessary to write and say how much I loved visiting the House of Darrach! Lunch was delicious. Excellent service. A must visit in Scotland! Will return soon. Thanks “Amazing Cakes!” Second time we’ve visited. First time was summer last year. We had a light lunch which was lovely. This time we just stopped by for coffee and cake. They have a lovely selection of very tasty cakes on display.

“Super Special” Visited last weekend for the first time having been recommended to by friends. My wife and I were greeted by a lovely woman, and despite it being busy, were seated right away. She also told us of the special they had on - a barbecue pulled pork burger! Well that was me sold straight away! Our order was promptly taken by a pleasant young waiter who was a great help with my wife who is gluten free - she opted for a baked potato with prawns. The food arrived quickly and was nicely presented, with my burger on a large wooden board. If it looked nice, it tasted even better. We polished off the mains, but were just too full to sample the multitude of cakes on offer. Overall - a very pleasant experience. Great food, great staff. We’ll be back, and we’ll leave space for the cakes next time! What more can be said, The House of Darrach is the place to lunch!
