Welcome to Parklife in 2015! We have had such fun putting this edition together with our 88 pages full of events, articles, and a wealth of local businesses. One of our highlights was interviewing Bunty Orchard (90 years old!) see page 61 to find out what Bunty has to say about her beloved Kippen Village. We were also delighted to be there for the unveiling of the Tom Weir statue pg 52 & 53, if you have not visited yet I am sure you will after reading about this man’s truly inspiring life! Trossachs Search and Rescue on page 76 informs you how you can become a first responder and a lifesaver within this area, incredible work carried out by dedicated local volunteers. With Valentines Day and Mothers Day fast approaching you will find many places to eat locally that will be providing special menus for these occasions, see page 2 for Bar Siena’s menu (Highly recommended by the Parklife team!) This is a welcome edition to the Parklife area.. Italian cuisine! Thank you for reading and don’t forget to keep sending us your events past and present and we will do our best to list them for you in our Spring edition.

Heron House Early Years wishes a warm and friendly, Happy New Year to all. Welcome to our new families, we are privileged to look after your children. In December our amazing children, OSC, Nursery and Babies, performed their Christmas show “Ralph the Reindeer” on stage in Killearn village hall. An audience of Parents, Families and Friends, thoroughly enjoyed the singing and dancing and refreshments too. Well done to them all. What a successful way to round off the year. Two words...SHINING STARS! A huge “THANK YOU” to everyone for

their kind contributions, purchasing raffle tickets for our Christmas hamper, making donations and helping out in other ways. It was such an enjoyable event with us all being together and having Aileen Saunders, our music specialist from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and CHIME, to co-ordinate the show was wonderful. All of this enabled us to raise funds for The Beatson Cancer Charity. Funds which can contribute towards improving the paediatric waiting area and providing complementary therapy such as massage and

At Heron House Early Years within our nurturing and Learning Environment, some of what we do is to encourage openness to new thinking, have respect for others, work in partnerships and effectively contribute. Please feel you can come, look around, meet our team and learn more. Thank you again, we look forward to welcoming you. Gabi and Fiona (01360 550162)

Commonwealth Games Legacy 2014 Fund was looking for applications from groups like ours. We upgraded our plans and were awarded a match funded grant. With help from people like Stevie Flynn (who cycled to 500 miles off road to raise funds) and the Buchlyvie Pottery and many others; we matched it. Since a group of parents came together three years ago to form the Buchlyvie Community Association. We’ve had a mountain of fundraising to climb, but are nearing the summit with the opening of the amazing man made feature that is the Buchlyvie Climbing Boulder.

We consulted with Mountaineering and Climbing Scotland, and Stirling Council to ensure that once the

boulder was built; it would be something people would want to use. After going out to tender we appointed Rockworks Ltd, who put founds down to which they fixed the polystyrene sub structure before spraying it with three layers of concrete, and a shingle base around it. Now that it’s been approved by R.O.S.P.A. and adopted by Stirling Council, it can be used by anyone from the area.

This fulfils an items asked for at our initial public consultation, asked for a climbing structure in the play park. Our landscape architect Keith Woods put a climbing wall in the plan, which was approved by Stirling Council. Then we heard the Sport Scotland

New Flavour of ice-cream

Park Life | Feature

hits the shores of Loch Lomond!

Amy Pocock was the winner of The Bal-Moo-Ha Ice Cream Competition run by St Mocha Coffee Shop & Ice Cream Parlour in Parklife Magazine. 14 year old Amy won the first prize by coming up with the best choice of new flavours for The Bal-Moo-Ha range of children’s ice cream. Bal-Moo-Ha follows on from the huge success that St Mocha had with

their Loch Lomond Luxury Ice Cream brand. Bal-Moo-Ha, just like Loch Lomond Luxury Ice Cream is all made on site in Balmaha.

As you can see from the close up picture of Amy’s creation it looks amazing, and we can confirm that it tastes superb too.

The flavour that Amy wanted created was ‘Wee Ginger-bred Man’ and recently she got the opportunity to join St Mocha’s ice cream specialist Lizanne to produce the very first batch. Amy even drew a picture showing how she wanted the ice cream created, her choice of ingredients: Ginger Ice Cream, Biscuit Chips and Chocolate Chip Buttons.

Amy’s prize is free ice cream for a year in St Mocha Coffee Shop & Ice Cream Parlour. Bal-moo-ha ice cream will be on sale this summer with this flavour and a selection of others using choices from the children that entered the competition. Thanks to everyone who took part. Steaming through history.

Park Life | Feature

The Steamship Sir Walter Scott what an incredible journey it had to get to Loch Katrine! Named after Scotland’s much loved poet and author Sir Walter Scott, our iconic 115 year old steamship is one of Scotland’s major visitor attractions. Built by Denny Bros at Dumbarton, the steamship’s journey to Loch Katrine was not easy. She was meticulously dismantled before being transported by barge to Inversnaid on Loch Lomond and then by horse drawn carts to Stronnachlachar where she was rebuilt and first sailed on the 1st April 1900. The steamship has undergone a number of changes over the years, including a new passenger saloon, and although still powered by her original 1898 Mathew Paul triple expansion steam engine, her new boilers, replaced in 2007 use environmentally friendly bio-fuel. Season after season, the Steamship Sir Walter Scott, which provides full disabled access and facilities, continues to welcome cyclists, hikers, families and international tourists on board, to enjoy the stunning scenery of Loch Katrine. Relax on board with a drink and snack while listening to the tales and legends of the loch narrated by our knowledgeable and experienced crew. AGA – home to great cooking Introducing the AGA Dual Control The AGA Dual Control is designed for those who like flexibility but still want to take advantage of great tasting food and the indefinable AGA warmth in the kitchen. It offers everything you love about AGA, but with massively reduced running costs and servicing costs. The AGA Dual Control’s ovens are more as you would expect from a traditional AGA cooker and operate together. What’s more, the two hotplates can be turned on and off independently, meaning you can make a reduction in the overall heat input into the room from the cooker when desired. The AGA Dual Control is available in electric, or with gas ovens and electric hotplates. Taste the AGA difference at AGA Glasgow.

22 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

The AGA treats food differently. Put simply, it doesn’t blast food with drying direct heat. Instead, radiant heat from the cast iron ovens gently cooks food, locking in flavour, moisture and goodness, meaning the food you serve tastes delicious. To find out more, or to book a demonstration, call or visit AGA Glasgow, 130-132 Great Western Road, Glasgow, G4 9AD. 0141 332 8486 agaliving.com

GROWING AMBITION… Flowers are the so called icing on the cake for a wedding or any special occasion but how much nicer if you can use locally home-grown flowers, cleverly displayed in beautiful arrangements? This is exactly what Amanda Clayden, founder of Green Pea Studio near Port of Menteith, Stirling has created. As a very talented and creative florist/gardener Amanda grows her own flowers, herbs and foliage which she then uses to produce the most imaginative and stunning bouquets, posies and arrangements. Weddings are her speciality, but she also runs floral and gardening workshops, takes commissions and sells artisan gifts directly from Green Pea Studio and at various markets.

Interview with...

Luci Rooney of Events Décor, Balfron Although originally from a set design for television background, I set up eventsdecor in 2005 to fill a gap in the market for a local event decorator which can provide the full venue dressing service, a one-stop shop if you like along with a unique personal service. I love working in this part of the world, there is such a variety of venues and we have a showroom and store in Balfron (where I also live).

What has been your favourite event so far? It’s really difficult to pick a favourite event from all the ones we have decorated at eventsdecor, as it’s well over 500 now. We decorate a

huge variety of events from simple table centres at a tiny party to full dressing of a huge wedding. The transformation of Fintry bowling club for an incredible wedding springs to mind as well as a burlesque themed party in the playground (barn venue). Do you have any top tips for creating the right atmosphere in the room? Decoration is about making the most of and enhancing your venue, we can dress any venue to create the atmosphere the client is looking for, and sometimes all it needs is a few well-placed touches. As well as atmosphere, practical elements need to be taken into consideration, we can help you with issues such as only providing table centres that are tall and thin or lower than eye level to allow views across the table, decorative lighting is the most atmospheric, but how can we attach string lights? will chair covers fit the chairs in the venue?

Looking forwards, following our “Vows” nomination last year, 2015 is already getting busy, there are three of us in the business now, we are expanding into new venues and building up hire stock for all types of events, all of which can be seen in our showroom in Balfron, please call for an appointment and free, no-obligation consultation. Best Man’s Speeches The Top 3 Mistakes! Sooner or later in every man’s life, unless you are immensely unpopular, you will get asked to perform best man duty. As much of a privilege as this is to be asked, it is a daunting task that will undoubtedly cause untold panic, make you lose sleep, and ultimately test your friendship – that is what the stag do is for right? But to most the thought of writing the speech is the first thing that springs to mind and then delivering the speech is enough to make a grown man fall to the floor, get into the foetal position and wish he had never even bothered to challenge this guy to a game of conkers 20 years ago and put himself in this position in the first place!

1) DON’T MILK IT Yes, you’ve got a big part to play in the day’s proceedings, but remember; you’re not the main event. A good best man’s speech should be limited to not more than 1000 words. That’s about

seven minutes. Any longer and you’ll start to lose your audience. If things are going well, don’t be tempted to improvise and add to your speech. An ill-considered ad lib can turn the crowd against you and once their attention starts to drift, it’s hard to get them back.

2) SHELVE THE SHAGGY DOG STORIES Amusing incidents from the groom’s past can be gold dust, but not if the punch line takes ten minutes to setup. Consider whether you need to relate an entire story. If it can be potted down to two or three lines of hard-hitting humour, it will get a much better response. A 500 word summary of Steve’s disastrous 1992 pot-holing holiday might be entertaining for your fellow spelunkers at the reception, but you’d be better off distilling it into a single gag …

“As anyone who remembers Steve’s notorious caving accident in ‘92 will know, he’s used to being trapped in a harsh, cold environment which no light can reach. So he should find marriage a breeze.”

3) DON’T MENTION THE EX Hopefully, this one’s obvious. If you can’t see why talking about his exes on your mate’s wedding day might upset some people (not least the bride), then you’re probably already heading for a Best Man disaster of epic proportions. In fact, just for you, here are couple of extra do’s and don’ts: Don’t punch the bride’s Dad. Do wear a tie … and trousers. Don’t puke on the cake. Do bring a gift.

Multi Media Man

Park Life | Interview

Drymen based Paul Saunders is well known in the Parklife area as a photographer. What you may not know is that he also runs his own media company. We caught up with Paul to find out more about that side of his business. Paul tell us about your media background? ‘I worked in radio for two decades, including Radio Clyde where I was Programme Director. When I set up my own business in 2010 I decided that I wanted to continue media and marketing, combining it with being a Professional Photographer’. Who are your clients? It’s a varied collection that includes a comedian, charities and many tourism businesses. I work with them to drive their results, increasing bookings, revenue etc. Give us an idea of some of your work? For The Oak Tree Inn it’s been about

developing marketing ideas, updating logos and launching a brand new website for them. We’ve recently published a new map and guide for Balmaha that will be very effective for them. What kind of services do you specialise in? I produce videos, create promotions, design website content, social media, not forgetting photography of course! Every client is different and my starting point is always about developing the right strategy for them.’

A taste of the exotic with a Punjabi Dessert! Rose flavoured Phirini (Serves 4) Ingredients 500ml full fat or semi-skimmed milk 1/4 cup ground rice ½ cup sugar according to taste 2 tsp rose water a few natural pistachio nuts to garnish

Whilst we all love to cook spicy Punjabi food desserts are often overlooked. Punjabi people have a sweet tooth and really appreciate a good pudding. This one is amongst the most popular. Incredibly quick and easy to make, it’s sweet comforting and fragrant and of course totally delicious! Ground rice is an ingredient that has gone out of fashion but is still very easy to come across in Supermarkets and Asian shops. Garnishing with dried rose petals (or fresh f you prefer) and pistachios not only looks lovely but tastes delicious too.

Method 1. Set the milk over a low flame. 2. Add the sugar and the rice flour and stir. 3. Continue stirring until the mixture starts to thicken, this usually takes 5 to 10 minutes until you have a consistency like thick custard. 4. Turn off the heat, add the rose water and mix well. 5. Garnish with sliced pistachio nuts. This dish is delicious eaten hot or cold. Recipe supplied by Yasmin McDonagh of Scotia Spice. Encouraging Local Talent to Showcase in Killearn in 2015 The idea behind the Killearn Country Market is to showcase and support the wonderful local produce, crafts and other talent found in the area and to help encourage new and exciting ‘seedcorn’ businesses, creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. It can be the perfect place to gain vital feedback for new businesses, build relations and confidence and to use as a spring board for further development. It is also a regular platform for all to enjoy, both stall holders and visitors, with lots of community involvment and we would encourage even the most established of local small businesses to take a stall every now and then as it is a great community event to meet others and share experience.

run in tandem, highlighting artists and photographers and with the opening of the well known Three Sisters Bake at the Village Hall, we hope to work together to attract visitors from further afield too, making the Killearn Country Market a well known destination Saturday morning experience. Killearn Country Market will be changing to the 1st Sunday of every month 10am - 1pm at Killearn Village Hall.

This year we have exciting plans to develop the offer at the market, encouraging a good mix of artisanal produce and crafts and we will be revamping the website and marketing which should let everyone know what is going on every month and offer businesses another platform to showcase themselves. We also hope to have exhibitions that www.parklifescotland.co.uk

Moving Home in 2015? I wonder just how much those who live within the Loch Lomond National Park really appreciate what they have? Quite simply some of the best scenery within Britain, Europe … the world! Add to this the wonderful wildlife, the diversity of flora and fauna, and the individuality of the people and you realise what a fabulous place it is to stay. The Victorians realised this when they built many of the fine homes that adorn the area. This is further enhanced with the many wonderful rural properties, charming villages and small towns we have.

stamp duty “slab system” has been welcomed and is certainly fairer. We are now seeing steady, if undramatic, house price increases and a return to real buyer interest across the market. The advice to anyone thinking of selling is: • Do your homework and get advice • Present your home to the best possible standard

• Ensure your agent markets your house using high quality photographs, floor plans and uses the best websites • Do not over price your home, be guided by your Home Report and your estate agent. Follow these simple rules and you will sell in 2015! Martin Turner - Property Bureau

All of these factors go to ensure that demand for homes within the area remains high and will continue to do so. It is true that the economic downturn emanating from the banking crisis in 2008 has had a long lasting effect on values, and that last year’s referendum impacted on some property transactions. However, the recent move away from the

Weir’s Way

Countryside Legend Tom Weir’s Statue Unveiled on the Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond as Hundreds Join in Centenary Celebrations All roads led to Balmaha on the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond on Monday 29th December as hundreds of people from all over Scotland witnessed the unveiling of an impressive bronze statue in memory of countryside legend and ‘’Scotland’s most popular mountain man’’ Tom Weir. They joined in the celebrations by raising replicas of Tom’s signature red and white toorie hat to mark the centenary of his birth and his great contribution to

introducing generations to Scotland’s outdoors through his adventures as a climber, naturalist, writer and broadcaster. Well-known outdoor writers and broadcasters Cameron McNeish and Jimmie MacGregor joined Tom’s widow, 94 year old Rhona Weir, to unveil the statue against the idyllic backdrop of Balmaha Bay. A special musical tribute was performed by popular Scottish minstrel Alistair

McDonald who played some of Tom’s favourite music, including Loch Lomond and The Rowan Tree. Speaking at the statue unveiling, Cameron McNeish said: “Tom would have been 100 years old today and it’s interesting that he was born only a few days after the death of the great John Muir. The two men were so similar in many ways; in their passion for wild land and in their belief that we should look after and

nurture the natural world as much as we could. “After the first of his regular appearances in Macgregor’s Gathering on Radio Scotland it was obvious that no script was required, such were his natural talents as a communicator. It is impossible to calculate the number of people who were introduced to the splendours of the Scottish countryside by Tom and we all owe him a great deal.” Tom’s widow, Rhona Weir, is delighted with the quality of the statue and said: “The level of detail and likeness to Tom is amazing and I am pleased the statue has been sited at one of Tom’s favourite spots on Loch Lomondside which inspired so much of his writings and broadcasts on Scotland’s great outdoors . Susan Taylor, Administrator of the Tom Weir Memorial Group, added: “This special celebration and statue unveiling is the culmination of almost three years hard work by a dedicated group of volunteers who were determined to mark Tom’s contribution to enriching the lives of many tens of thousands of people with his writings and broadcasts on facets of Scotland’s rich and diverse heritage. “The fact that we have raised over £70,000 is tribute to the high regard Tom is held in and we are grateful to the hundreds of knitters

who donated thousands of Tom’s signature red and white toorie hats, which has been a great fundraiser and are very much in evidence today, and the thousands of other members of the public who have generously donated funds.

STV and The Friends of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs, without whose help it would not have been possible to fund and deliver the statue and associated works in memory of Tom in time for his centenary anniversary.’’

“We are also grateful to other funding partners including the Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, Stirling Council, DC Thompson,

The statue sculptor Sean HedgesQuinn, who was in attendance at the statue unveiling presented Tom’s widow, Rhona with a miniature replica. The delivery of this project, which included a phase 1 facelift to the existing picnic area and creation of a raised plinth and walling to provide a high quality setting for the statue, was coordinated by the conservation charity, Friends of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs and site contractors were Alexander Fraser Electrical Services Ltd and Lomond Grass of Balmaha. The upgrading scheme designers were MW Architecture & Design of Balfron Station.

Fintry Amateur Dramatic Society News Following our outstanding success in 2014 with our British Championship winning play, ‘Victor’s Dung’, we are currently rehearsing our competition entry for 2015. This is a Commedia dell’arte (“theatre of the professional or actor”) production of ‘The Path of True Love’. This highly stylised form of theatre evolved in Venice in the 17th Century and it underpins much of modern comedy. The hugely successful ‘One Man Two Guvnors’ starring James Corden is a reworking of an original Commedia dell’arte play. Our production will have its first public airing at the Stirling District Round of the SCDA One Act Play Festival which will, conveniently for us, be held in the Menzies Hall Fintry on 6 and 7 March 2015. FADS is also rehearsing a further one act play ‘Ladybirds’ by Tony Layton. It’s about a village drama group that has lost all their men. The future looks bleak until a bright, young director, Francesca Delmarco, agrees to help them out with a somewhat controversial play she has written herself. When the word gets out, the local vicar’s wife attempts to ban the production, but the manipulative ladies have their own way of dealing this. ‘Ladybirds’ will appear in Fintry along with ‘The Path of True Love’ at the Menzies Hall in late March on dates yet to be agreed. See our website www.fintrydrama.org.uk and our Facebook page for further details when they emerge. 54 |

Spotlight on Kippen “Oot o’ the Warld and intae Kippen” is a well-known local saying, a great description of the scenery and life of a truly rural village. Rising steeply above the flat Carse of Stirling, the view from the steel map at the top of the Main Street, shows the 9 Munro’s of the Foothills of the Grampian Mountains in a panoramic sweep from Ben Lomond in the West to the Forth Bridges of the East. Four roads meet at Kippen Cross, the centre of the village, with its two long established small Hotels, four shopsLicensed Grocer and Post Office, Butcher, Café/Deli and Hairdresser, a few steps away. Many local scenic walks start from the Cross and a detailed leaflet is available. The handsome red sandstone Church Clock Tower is a splendid landmark, with magnificent interior, and the spacious Village Hall, Primary School, Reading and Recreation Room, and the recently refurbished Sports Field, all nearby. Unfortunately the only thing missing is a Car Park, but fortunately the streets are wide and access easy. Until 1964, Kippen had the largest Indoor Vine in the world. Planted in 1891 at the top of the village, it

Park Life | Feature

flourished and eventually annually provided around 2,000 bunched of delicious “Gros Colman” black grapes. A family concern, it had to be destroyed, just before “Tourism” arrived, tho’ cuttings thrive in local garden/greenhouses and a Vinery at Culzean Castle, Maybole, seeks to keep the original vine flourishing. Kippen had a Church from the Twelvth Century, and local history records Kippen men concerned with Covenanting times. The annual Flower Show is held each August, the 113th this year on August 22. Since 1980 a Street Fayre takes place all day each second Saturday of June. The Kippen Football Club founded in 1910 is still active in the local League AprilSeptember each year, The Curling Club is in its 172nd year, and up to last year Summer Ice was a popular Winter game in the village. The School Roll is presently 110 pupils and the school choir entertained when the Commonwealth Baton stopped in Kippen Church Hall Garden last July. Editorial kindly supplied by Winnie.

Alice & Mark Silverwood took over The Inn at Kippen in January 2014. We caught up with them to see how the last year has been and find out what they have planned for the future. It’s has been a brilliant year and although it’s been hard work we are really pleased with what we have achieved. Bunty Orchard is a Kippenite of the first order and I feel honoured to have met her. Bunty Orchard is a ninety year young resident of Kippen. She has lived her entire 90 years in the village. Born in Cambusbarron at her maternal grandmother’s home her parents returned to Kippen two days after Bunty was born with their young family in 1924. We went along to meet Bunty and hear her memories of Kippen over the years. In her pristine sitting room this healthy, active nonagenarian with a keen sense of humour and a zest for life most of would envy talked about her life as a Kippenite. A Kippenite is a resident of Kippen who gets involved in the village and community. It doesn’t matter how long or short a time you have been a resident - just be involved! Bunty, her two brothers and one sister all attended Kippen Primary and she remembers the numerous shops on Main Street, the sweetie shop, shoe shop, bakers. Skating on Burnside Pond when it froze in the depths of winter and playing ice hockey with upside down walking sticks and an empty shoe polish tin. Happy memories. At the start of World War 2 all the young men went off to war and women replaced them in the workplace. Bunty and two friends went to work at Gargunnock Sawmill. When their time at the Sawmill ended Bunty was the only one of the three girls with all her fingers! After the war Bunty trained as a nurse and spent many years ‘down the road’ at Killearn Hospital. She left Killearn Hospital in an ambulance with the very last patient to leave when the hospital closed in 1973. On to the Southern General in Glasgow and finally Kildean Hospital in Stirling until she retired. At the same time Bunty had her own family, son David and daughter Sandra, and now six grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. All of whom are regular visitors. A military thread has run through Bunty’s life of which she is justifiably very proud, and continues to this day. Bunty is actively involved in village life, with the Rural, the Guild and Heritage Society . She writes on occasion for the Kippen Grapevine and shows no sign of slowing up. She’s a Kippenite of the first order and I feel honoured to have met her. Interview with Katrina Gardner

Gardening Tips for February & March February • Prepare vegetable seed beds, and sow some vegetables under cover • Chit potato tubers • Protect blossom on apricots, nectarines and peaches • Net fruit and vegetable crops to keep the birds off • Prune winter-flowering shrubs that have finished flowering • Divide bulbs such as snowdrops, and plant those that need planting ‘in the green’ • Prune Wisteria • Prune hardy evergreen hedges and renovate overgrown deciduous hedges • Prune conservatory climbers • Cut back deciduous grasses left uncut over the winter

March • Protect new spring shoots from slugs • Plant shallots, onion sets and early potatoes • Plant summer-flowering bulbs • Lift and divide overgrown clumps of perennials • Top dress containers with fresh compost • Mow the lawn on dry days (if needed) • Cut back Cornus (dogwood) and Salix (willow) grown for colourful winter stems • Weeds come back in to growth - deal with them before they get out of hand • Start feeding fish and using the pond fountain; remove pond heaters • Open the greenhouse or conservatory doors and vents on warm days

to the tune of £1500, that has ensured there is now a Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) located on the outside wall of the Drymen Post Office. ‘PADS’ as they are referred to are springing up throughout the local area, following on from the very first at Croftamie on the Wayfarers in 2013 through to the most recent addition outside the Oak Tree Shop in Balmaha in April. Currently there are 11 spread throughout the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park and beyond,

some even housed in reconditioned BT phone booths such as at Arnprior and Loch Katrine. Two further are now in Killearn and Callander. Such equipment especially for rural communities has already shown to increase the chance of someone, who could be a family member, visitor etc survive a cardiac arrest when the defibrillator is applied, prior to the emergency services arrival. These highly skilled volunteers who alongside their trained dog team, were involved in the ground support at the Clutha tragedy and who also recently marked the 10th anniversary of their at the Stockline plastics explosion, can only function today due to the public’s generosity in keeping this vital public service maintained. Keyboard Tips for your iPad

Here are a couple of ways to make typing easier on your iPad. Caps Lock: sometimes you need to type all in capitals and hitting Shift before each letter is slow. So double-tap the shift button whenever you are typing to turn on Caps Lock. Tap once to switch it off. Rather than tap the 123 key to get to the apostrophe and speech marks, just tap and hold the exclamation mark to get an apostrophe , tap and hold the question mark to get speech marks. Small Business Finance Tips Now that personal tax returns have been submitted, it’s a good time to highlight a few points for business owners to think about for 2015.

Before 5 April 2015: Do you employ anyone? Make sure that you have claimed the Employment Allowance covering the first £2,000 of employers NI, otherwise you’ll lose this benefit for the year. It’s also available for 2015/16 so again make sure you claim it.

employers (no matter how small) will need to offer employees a workplace pension and will be required to auto-enrol eligible employees into a suitable scheme. For most small businesses this won’t be a requirement until 2016 or 2017, so why do anything now? Well, from the start of 2016 there will be over 100,000 employers a month needing a scheme and very few professionals giving advice or pension providers offering schemes.

You need a minimum of 6 months to get everything in place, so plan ahead and don’t wait until the last minute as the fines can be very high. You can get a scheme in place ready to go well in advance, so why wait? Stuart McDonagh, SYKAM & Co Chartered Accountants To discuss any of the issues raised above or for a free initial consultation call Stuart on 07791 718861.

Are you a director of an owner managed business? Now is the time to review your salary to ensure that you’ve used all of your personal allowance and taken advantage of the Employment Allowance if applicable. If your company has sufficient after tax profits available consider paying dividends for the tax year up to the higher rate tax band.

During 2015: Need to invest in equipment? There is up to £500,000 Annual Investment Allowance for purchasing plant and equipment available until the end of 2015. This gives your business full tax relief on the cost of purchase. It’s likely to drop to £25,000 after 31 December 2015 so for any large purchases, it would be worth making them this year (note the total allowance available could be less than £500,000 depending on your business year end and the date the equipment is purchased). What about Pensions Auto Enrolment?

Are you starting, growing or just want to improve your business? Approachable, practical and pro-active accounting, tax and business service. Contact Stuart McDonagh FCA for a free initial consultation SYKAM & Co, Chartered Accountants, Balfron
