Established 24years ago the Green Gallery has garnered a reputation for showcasing the very best artists and artists craftsmen working in Scotland. In our existing purpose-built gallery in Buchlyvie we have four eclectic exhibitions a year with established artists and new graduates. We are not governed by commercial trends so we like to show artists that are exciting and talented. Over the years we have developed our own unique gallery style. Buying artworks should be an enjoyable experience. We offer insightful advice on starting a collection, hanging and framing and offer flexible payments plans to suit clients’ needs. We offer personal consultations, visiting clients’ homes and advising

A must visit for locals and everyone else! Since opening our doors for the first time on 13th June, we could not have anticipated a warmer welcome from our clients, both local & from further afield. We are most happy about the fact that local people seem to have adopted us as their village store and we are having a good level of returning customer, which is one of the things we were hoping for. Our work continues to expand and complete our product offering, not by just getting in some of our long awaited produce to arrive, but also based on comments & requirements from the customer.

establishing themselves to be firm favourites. Also proving to be very popular is our freshly baked bread offering, along with some freshly baked products made In the village which again is a theme we would like to expand on. “Foodie Gift” service has been a huge success with it’s unique approach of beautiful ceramics filled with fine confectionery & chocolates or olives, gift wrapped and ready to be taken to that special occasion. This will be closely followed by our idea of providing fully loaded Charcuterie Platters, & Cheese Boards, which we will construct according to customers requirements. A huge thank you to you all!

The take away sandwich range has been well received & will continue to develop and we will be offering a wider selection during the next couple of months.

We are continuing to work on fine tuning the wine selection and sample bottles for tasting will be available at the weekends where we hope to present some of our lesser known wine types. Our first “mini” wine tasting was very well received and we will continue to develop these, nal shop name and Logo Font with the next ones being in the diary from August onwards. We have received a very positive reaction to our wide & varied cheese selection, with certain cheeses already

This year Balmaha’s Braw Weekend will take place on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd October, with plans well underway. Benview Coffee Shop Delicious lunch with a view!

It was a sunny day so we decided to visit a local coffee shop for lunch. After seeing the advert in the previous edition about the new management we decided to visit Ben View Coffee Shop. Although it was extremely busy the friendly and welcoming staff found us a table by the window where we could appreciate the picturesque views. We ordered drinks and we were then presented with menus containing varied options for lunch. It included, snacks; light bites as well as more substantial meals, cakes and coffees. After browsing the menu, we each decided to select one of the light bites. We had butternut squash soup along with fresh crusty bread as well as a toasted Panini with humous, beetroot and onion chutney served alongside a light salad. We then finished our meal by choosing one of the many varieties of coffee on the menu. Although selecting only one delicious course from the menu we will be back again to try some more. Friendly staff, great service, good food, value for money! After which you can browse the garden centre. All in all, very enjoyable! Reviewed by Eilidh and Helen

Try these Fresh & Fruity Recipes!

Ingredients • 3 fruit (2” dia) – kiwi • 1 container (8 oz) – Greek Yogurt • 1 tablespoon – honey • 1/2 tsp – vanilla extract • 1/2 cup chips (6 oz package) – chocolate chips, semisweet • 1 teaspoon – coconut oil Directions

Ingredients • 1/2 cup – peanut butter, all-natural • 1 cup – yogurt, plain • 1 cup – almond milk, unsweetened • 2 tablespoon – honey • 1 cup – raspberries • 2 cup – orange juice • 1 ounce – hemp seeds Directions 1. blend nut butter, yogurt, milk and honey until smooth. Pour the mixture into molds until they are filled half way or even one-third of the way. I had filled a few with solely this mixture as requested by my son. Cover and freeze for approximately one hour. 2. Next, stir together the raspberries and juice, divide among your molds and then insert the sticks. Top off the pops with some hemp seed if desired, or sprinkle hemp seeds between the layers. 3. Cover and place back in the freezer until completely frozen. This can take a few hours and up to 6-8 hours depending on how large your mold is. 28 |

1. Peel the kiwi fruit, place in a blender and blitz until smooth. If you are struggling to blend it add a couple of teaspoons of water to get it going. 2. Add roughly 1/2 tablespoon of the blended kiwi fruit to the bottom of 6 small yogurt pots (or Popsicle molds) and place them flat in the freezer for one hour. 3. Meanwhile, mix the Greek yogurt, honey / maple syrup and vanilla extract together. After an hour, remove the Popsicles from the freezer and add roughly 2 tablespoons of the yogurt mixture to each, leaving some space at the top for the final kiwi layer. Tap the pots or molds down on a hard surface to remove any air pockets. Press a Popsicle stick into each. The first kiwi layer should be firm enough to now hold the stick in place. Return to the freezer for another hour. 4. Add the final layer of blended kiwi to the Popsicle and freeze for a couple of hours or overnight. Melt the dark chocolate and coconut oil in a saucepan or the microwave (be careful not to let it burn) and drizzle onto the popsicles. The frozen popsicles will make the chocolate shell harden immediately. 5. Serve straight away or keep in an airtight bag or container in the freezer for up to 6 weeks.

Park Life Interview...

with Colin Henderson (General Manager) Geoff Burt (Head Chef) Brian Stewart (Leisure Manager) of Buchanan Arms Hotel & Leisure Club

Colin Henderson; Are you enjoying working back at the hotel with the new owners? It has been 10 years since I last worked here and it feels like coming home. The new owners have invested heavily and hope to bring the place back to its former glory. Our main priorities are to spearhead corporate business and to bring back the local clientele whilst maintaining our successful wedding business. Having moved from the 4 Star Gleddoch House Hotel, I have brought the head chef Geoff Burt and together we have fresh ideas and enthusiasm to build the business. Training and developing the staff from inside and employing some new experienced staff will enable us to offer a sound base and consistency. Geo Burt; Head Chef is a hugely important role for a Hotel and will come with challenges, have you any thoughts on how to take them on?

In the very short time of working here it has helped to work alongside the owners, share my creative ideas with them and have my thoughts well received. My focus and passion is creating a positive dining experience for the guests and I would always prefer to use local fresh seasonal produce. With this in mind I have introduced new seasonal menus and sourced new suppliers. It is an exciting challenge taking on a role like this but it has will been well worth it when I hear that local people and hotel guests are returning after enjoying their experience. Brian Stewart; You have been manager for 5 years now and there have been significant changes in the last two years, have you more plans for 2016? The investment in the leisure club has been of huge benefit to our members. The changing Rooms, Reception area, Pool area & gym

have all received a make-over. This year we are looking to increase our membership numbers and we are offering a large selection of free classes, discounts on Hotel food for members, fitness assessments, nutritional advice and ongoing exercise programme; all included in your membership. Call me on 01360 660434 to find out more about memberships and seasonal taster memberships. Colin Henderson; What are your ambitions for the Hotel in 2016? 2016 will bring more improvements and renovation works within the main hotel and we hope to bring back a lot of local custom by offering excellent service and dining in the Restaurant or functions. Come along and see the difference for yourself and enjoy the experience as we begin to build toward a stronger and brighter future.

August Garden Tips... Sultry late summer August is usually one of the hottest months of the year making watering essential. Try to use grey water wherever possible, especially as water butts may be running low if it has been a dry summer. August is traditionally holiday-time, so you might need to enlist the help of friends and family to look after the garden while you are away. When you are at home, take the time to prune summer-flowering shrubs. 1

Prune Wysteria

Don’t delay summer pruning restricted fruits

Deadhead flowering plants regularly

Watering! - particularly containers, & new plants, preferably with grey recycled water or stored rainwater

Collect seed from favourite plants

Harvest sweetcorn & vegetables as they become ready

Continue cutting out old fruited canes on raspberries

Lift & pot up rooted strawberry runners

Keep ponds & water features topped up

10 Feed the soil with green manures

Girl Guiding within the Park Life area Did you know that there are 5 Guide, 8 Brownie and 6 Rainbows Units plus 1 Senior Section offering the Guiding Experience to over 300 girls within Endrick Division, which covers Gargunnock, near Stirling to Strathblane in the west With the very busy lives that we all have now – keeping all these units running smoothly and successfully is a massive challenge and we are constantly looking for new leaders to join the various units. Gone are the days when a Leader would stick with running a unit for 20 years or more although there are still a few stalwarts within the area and they are a great asset to the new leaders when they join sharing their knowledge and experience. We are looking for people from all walks of life whether you have been involved in Guiding yourself as a child or

have children of a Guiding age. Perhaps you are new to the area – this is a great way to meet new people and share and learn new skills. Maybe your children have gone off to university/work leaving you with extra time – an average weekly meeting is only 1 hour and a few people working on a rota system can work so well. Job sharing is very popular now and works well in Girlguiding sharing the load and responsibilities. Girlguiding provide training for all new leaders and can act as a stepping stone for young people that are looking for a career in childcare/teaching. Please give this some thought and if you think you could help in your local Village please call Fiona Hunter, Endrick Division Commissioner on 01786 870322 or email for further information. Anyone wishing to become a member of Girlguiding, either as a volunteer or a girl wishing to join a local unit should go to the Girlguiding website – Click on register your interest and follow the instructions. Keep our Guiding family supported in The Park Life area.

Curry Queen 2016! Yasmin McDonagh Scotia Spice!

I was thrilled and delighted to receive the Scottish Curry Queen 2016 award, it really means a lot to know that the Scottish curry industry recognises and supports what we’re doing at Scotia Spice. Showing people how to make authentic Punjabi food at home is at the heart of everything we do. The Scottish Curry Awards started in 2008 which makes this the 9th year of the awards. The awards celebrate excellence in the production, presentation and sales of one of Scotland’s favourite foods – the humble curry.

The awards recognise and reward the hard work and commitment of those who work tirelessly to provide us with the nations much loved dish – curry. “With a vast amount of restaurants and takeaway in Scotland the competition is always fierce. To be amongst such passionate people who love what they do, is truly inspiring.” commented Yasmin Mahmood, Operations Director of event organisers Oceanic Consulting.

As well as recognising the curry industry in all its facets, the event also raised just over £1770 for the official charity partner The Well Foundation. Well done to Yasmin and her team, it has been a pleasure to watch a local business go from strength to strength over the years and we wish you all the best for the future!

Scottish Charity Awards:

Chris Martin wins Exceptional Employee Judges deemed Chris’s dedication and innovation key in transforming Callander Youth Project Trust into the success it is today. The founder of one of the country’s most innovative social enterprises has spoken of his delight at winning Exceptional Employee at this year’s Scottish Charity Awards. Chris Martin, the Managing Director of Callander Youth Project Trust, has transformed it from a small youth group into a burgeoning social enterprise. As well as running a number of social enterprises from its hub in rural Stirlingshire, the organisation also offers vital youth work services. The charity runs the popular Callander Hostel which has become a huge success in its own right. Judges deemed Chris’s dedication and innovation key in transforming the organisation into the success it is today. As a product of good quality youth work myself, I am keen to facilitate opportunities for young people - Chris Martin On receiving his award at a ceremony in Edinburgh, Chris said: “I am both humbled and delighted to have won Exceptional Employee at this year’s Scottish Charity Awards.

“I am happy to work tirelessly in my role as I am a strong advocate of the fact that ‘Youth Work Changes Lives’ and, as a product of good quality youth work myself, I am keen to facilitate opportunities for young people to engage with local youth work services.” Shulah Allan, Convener of Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO), which organises the awards, added: “I’m in awe of all the finalists and winners. “Thanks to their efforts, more people in Scotland are receiving the support they need when they need it and we’re all more aware of important issues, and causes, which affect vulnerable people, and us all.”

Second Weirfest and Scotland’s Red Toorie Hat Festival is a roaring success! Thousands of visitors flocked to a sunkissed Balmaha Bay on Loch Lomondside on Saturday to enjoy the second ‘Weirfest’, the annual festival set up to honour Scotland’s most-loved mountain man, Tom Weir, with a mixture of music, entertainment and family fun beside his iconic statue. The event, held with the assistance of a Heritage Lottery Fund grant, was headlined on the main musical stage by popular Scottish entertainers Jimmie MacGregor and Alistair MacDonald, as well as the Loch Lomond Ukulele Orchestra who added colour to the programme with red toorie hats in abundance. Visitors were also able to enjoy various wildlife demonstrations, while the chance to throw wet replica versions of Tom’s signature red toorie hat and following Tom’s Discovery Trail added some extra fun to the day. The work of 300 school children from the 6 primary schools around the loch was celebrated with an exhibition showcasing their drawings and stories on the wonders of the Loch Lomond. A 28 page booklet on the theme of Tom Weir’s Loch Lomond Wonderland was also launched at the event to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Tom writing special features on Loch Lomond in the Scots Magazine.

Gordon Watson, chief executive of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park Authority, was in attendance to launch the booklet and said: “This publication is an important addition to the National Park’s educational resources, as it will help introduce young

people to the natural and cultural heritage wonders of Loch Lomond and some of Tom’s great writings on the loch. An important feature of the booklet is a series of spreads featuring what is special about Loch Lomond to the hundreds of local children who attend local primary schools and I am delighted so many of them got so enthusiastically involved in this project and learnt more about what is on their doorstep.’’

already-rich history of this site, which only became a reality 18 months ago but has already proven to be an enormous hit with so many visitors to this iconic part of Scotland. Tom Weir would be thrilled to see so many visitors to Loch Lomond on a summer day like today, and equally we are just as delighted with the turnout. Friends Chairman James Fraser added: “We are delighted with the bumper turnout of people who came along to this year’s Weirfest. We are also grateful to all exhibitors, performers, volunteers and to Sandy Fraser and his team at the Oak Tree Inn who all contributed to making the day such a great success. “The effort to maintain the Tom Weir Statue and picnic area goes on and the funding raised from Weirfest will help us to maintain this popular site to a high standard throughout the coming year.”

Rhona Weir, at the age of 96, was also able to join in the day’s events at the site, which has attracted over 120,000 visitors since the statue of her late husband was unveiled in December 2014. It has recently been augmented with the launch of a new mountain garden and storyboards which tell Tom’s story and introduce visitors to the heritage of Balmaha Bay. Weirfest, which was first staged in May 2015, was organised jointly by the Tom Weir Memorial Group and Friends of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs, both of whom helped to establish the statue site and continue to be responsible maintaining it all year round. Susan Taylor, Administrator of the Tom Weir Memorial Group, said: “This has been another fantastic day in the
