The loch, on whose northern shores Rob Roy was born, has inspired many great writers. Not least is Sir Walter Scott – whose namesake steamship is skippered by Gordon. Sir Walter Scott was inspired to pen an epic romantic poem after visiting the area and the work has lent its name to sister vessel, The Lady of the Lake. The trio of vessels is completed with a titular tribute to Rob Roy. McGregor of Glengyle is the third of the company’s craft to ply its trade on the loch. Gordon said: “Loch Katrine is regarded as the birthplace of Scottish tourism. Not only is the scenery fantastic but the area is steeped in history.” The loch – which supplies the city of Glasgow with fresh water - is also a centre of engineering innovation. The Loch Katrine water project, devised by civil engineer John Frederick Bateman, was opened by Queen Victoria in 1859. Her cottage, built specially for her visit, can still be seen from the decks of Sir Walter Scott or Lady of the Lake if you join the sailing to Stronachlachar.
