The Show will go on! s The 187th Drymen Show Sat 30th May 2015

Celebrating its 200th year in 2016, the show is being held for the 187th time this year. (Two World Wars and Foot and Mouth restrictions are the two main reasons for the missing years.) While today the show has broadened its reach and format well beyond those of 1816, it still holds true to two of its original foundations in terms of being an opportunity for livestock owners from across the region to show the best of their stock and hopefully win the top prizes in their entered class, thereby increasing recognition of them as a breeder and the value of their stock, as well as providing an opportunity for people involved, and in contact with the agricultural society, to meet

and celebrate their work. The Agricultural Sections this year includes top quality livestock in Cattle, Clydesdale Horses in hand and with Turnouts (wagons), Highland Ponies and 9 Breeds of Sheep which include the Scottish Blackface, Shetland and Zwartble Sheep. There is also a Light Horse Section with classes in Showing and Jumping. There will ask be a large number of Trade Stands, a Craft Tent, SWRI baking and craft competitions and Local Inter-School competitions for crafts, writing and poetry and football. There is also a Fun Fait for the young at heart. There is a Dog Section as well as a show competition for Rabbits, with the opportunity to pet a few alongside some other farm animals in the pet’s tent. In the afternoon in the main

s Saturday 30th May

ring there is a Parade of and Cup Presentation to the Prize Winning Animals and this starts off a varied selection of entertainment including Vintage Tractors, Heavy Horse Turnout, Childrens’ Races, Children’s Fancy Dress On Horseback and a main event TBC. (past years have had Motorbike Display, Equestrian Gymnastics, etc.) We hope to welcome you all in the beautiful setting of the Endrick valley in view of Buchanan Castle and the Cornish Hill.

2015

A fun filled day for all the family! Cattle, Sheep, Horses, Rabbits, Vintage Machinery, Junior Football, SWRI & School Competitions, Light Horse/Show Jumping. Trade Stand, advertising & sponsorship opportunities available.

It’s getting to be that time of year again – it’s getting warmer, the days are getting longer and our preparations for the next annual Deanston Whisky Festival are well underway. Our Whisky Festival takes place on Saturday 27 June 2015 and we’d love it if you could come and join in the celebrations. There are a number of activities taking place during the festival including:

Loch Katrine is the birthplace of Scottish tourism Beauty spot was inspiration for Sir Walter Scott Setting off for work is no chore when your base of operations is one of the most beautiful spots in Scotland. Gordon Allan, managing director of steamship Sir Walter Scott Ltd, works in an area of great natural beauty, one which is steeped in history.

The loch, on whose northern shores Rob Roy was born, has inspired many great writers. Not least is Sir Walter Scott – whose namesake steamship is skippered by Gordon. Sir Walter Scott was inspired to pen an epic romantic poem after visiting the area and the work has lent its name to sister vessel, The Lady of the Lake. The trio of vessels is completed with a titular tribute to Rob Roy. McGregor of Glengyle is the third of the company’s craft to ply its trade on the loch. Gordon said: “Loch Katrine is regarded as the birthplace of Scottish tourism. Not only is the scenery fantastic but the area is steeped in history.” The loch – which supplies the city of Glasgow with fresh water - is also a centre of engineering innovation. The Loch Katrine water project, devised by civil engineer John Frederick Bateman, was opened by Queen Victoria in 1859. Her cottage, built specially for her visit, can still be seen from the decks of Sir Walter Scott or Lady of the Lake if you join the sailing to Stronachlachar.

Local artist Sian Smith

wins a place on ‘Sky Arts Portrait of the Year’! of Balfron Station -

A week before my degree show at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design I found out I was one of the 72 people selected out of 1600 applicants to compete in the televised competition ‘Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year’ (aired in November 2014). I was beyond thrilled to have been chosen to take part but also fairly nervous as the show requires you to paint a famous sitter in just four hours and as the style I had developed until this point required days to produce a finished piece due to the application of thin layers I knew that this would be a challenge for me. I worked hard and practiced as much as I could in the few weeks I had prior to the filming of the show, I decided to go into the show with the aim of trying my

hardest but also just have fun and make the most of the experience. The competition was an even better experience than I had expected, everyone there; the crew, judges, sitters and fellow contestants were all great. I was also lucky enough to be sat beside the eventual winner of the show and fantastic artist, Christian Hook. I have kept in touch with Christian since filming ended and we have remained good friends, he has been helping me a lot with my work, giving me lots of hints and tips which I have been working hard on in my studio. Being chosen alongside so many other fantastic artists gave me the boost of confidence I really needed especially as a new graduate and provided a great start to my career

as a professional artist.

Affordable Home Styling with Karen Stewart Karen Stewart Interiors has developed over the last 20 years from the basis of Karen’s experience initially as developer with a keen eye for interiors to the business as it is today specialising in home styling but also extending to interior design and make over’s in the commercial sector. Karen wants to bring the world of interior styling and design to within everyone’s grasp. There has long been public perception that it may not be affordable. Consequently people may be deterred from engaging a stylist rather than make an enquiry which would quite literally change their lifestyle and environment overnight. Home styling is an affordable way to get your home exactly as you want it to be. The most common problem Karen encounters is clients spending unnecessary money and failing to get the results they envisaged. With

32 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

an extensive knowledge of the homes and interiors market Karen has a great depth of product resources both here and abroad which give her the edge over competitors and in addition give her the authentic, individual, original style she brings to clients. The secret is knowing exactly what you need, where to get it at the right price and then creatively putting it all together. With a little advice and professional know-how clients can be steered quickly and efficiently to realising their ideas. If you have spent countless hours and riches trying to create that look but never seem to quite get it, then there has never been a better time to think about home styling. “I was totally sold on Karen’s on

trend concepts and adopted all of all of her suggestions, voluptuous and inviting. She manged the process of delivery for me and the job was done on time, on budget and exceeded my expectations. I would highly recommend to anyone Karen’s skills as an interior stylist and look forward to working together again in the not too distant future.” RYAN JAMES (Proprietor of Two Fat Ladies Restaurants)

Its for every person interested in impoving their lives by surrounding themselves with what brings them joy. Interior Tips from

MIRRORS

The use of mirrors can give the illusion of more space and increase light in darker areas.

LIGHTING

When designing your lighting plan, first assess how much natural light you have. Take into consideration any focal points that you want to pick out such as art works or dining tables, then combine a mixture of floor lamps, table lamps and candles to create a flexible and inviting lighting plan.

HIDE CLUTTER

It’s not easy keeping our homes tidy, particularly if you have children, but our trunks and chests are an effective and attractive way to hide odds and ends. Wonderland p43 and The Panik Gallery pg37 keep an extensive range of delights for your home. If you have the room, declutter busy kitchen counters by storing your toaster, Kettle, Food mixer, rice cooker, and the like in cabinets or an oversized basket in your pantry.

WALL ART

Pictures and paintings will add interest to a room. Positioning is very important; they should be hung at eye level so that you look directly at them and grouping

Park Life | Homes & Interiors

Design Park Life a number of smaller pictures together can also be very effective. The Green Gallery in Buchlyvie pg 28 has a huge range of artwork to choose from.

BEDROOMS

The bed is the main focus of a bedroom so a quick, costeffective way to refresh the room is to update your bed linen then add plenty of cushions and a throw to add luxury. Try Elspeth at The Sewing Room pg 42 to update or add soft furnishings or See pg 35 The Fabric Gallery, Aberfoyle for discounted designer fabrics.

If you’ve got a beautiful kettle or colorful piece of Le Creuset, leave it out on the stove for all to see. This is another great way to add a pop of contrasting colour.

Flooring

Define your rooms with beautiful flooring, Oak Flooring, Rugs and Carpets. Have your old wooden floor brought back to life by Fraser Murray of Household Industrial Floor Sanding pg 41 or The Flooring Studio in Bridge of Weir has a vast supply of carpets and runners to add that touch of luxury pg 31. Interior Design Service & Homes Styling advice can be found locally with Town & Country Designs in Killearn pg 37 and Karen Stewart Interiors pg 33.

Hollywood’s calling! an affair with his girlfriend.

Lee Crompton, a writer from Croftamie hopes to hit the silver screen in 2015 with his latest film script.

Lee has made a number of short films for the Glasgow and Edinburgh 48 Hour Film Competitions where entrants are given a prop, genre, line of dialogue and a character and two days to write, film and edit a short film. Lee has used locations in and around Loch Lomond together with St Peter’s Seminary in Cardross and Arrochar Torpedo Testing Station.

The thriller, called Digging Deeper, is an adaptation of his third novel based in Glasgow. Having reached the Quarter Finals of the Slamdance Film Festival and the Semi-Finals of the Shore Script Competition, it has now been requested by a number of producers in Hollywood.

He also enjoys working with local business and organisations and has produced promotional videos for the likes of The Drymen Inn and Loch Lomond Swimming and Triathlon Club.

The story follows a construction worker battling to return a briefcase to a ruthless mob in order to avoid being blackmailed after they witness him accidentally killing a coworker he suspects of having

BUSINESS

Social Media and Park Life

We are delighted to be working with Liz Melville Social Media to bring you a brand new, fun, business networking group in the Park Life area. Since moving to Balfron recently, Liz had become increasingly frustrated by having to travel to Glasgow or Stirling for networking opportunities. Knowing that Katrina had previously run popular business networking for Park Life Magazine, Liz approached her with the idea of starting a new group, for business owners in the local villages and areas surrounding the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. And so Business Blether was born! Based on the name Liz had used for a Twitter networking group she runs every Thursday #SocialBlether – Katrina and Liz felt that a ‘blether’ was just the right word for their new, informal network!

PARK LIFE PUTS THE SPOTLIGHT ON

Drymen, Balmaha and Rowardennan

Business Blether will be held on the final Thursday of every month, and will alternate between a breakfast time ‘coffee drop-in’ and a more structured lunch or dinner event. Feel free to come along when you can, and network with other local business owners over a coffee or light refreshment – membership is completely FREE!

The ‘real’ Scotland starts here! Make a date with Callander

It’s a gateway to Highland and Lowland attractions - but there’s plenty for visitors to enjoy in and around the town itself.

The small but bustling town of Callander is regarded by many as the portal to the “real” Scotland.

Walks by the beautiful Bracklinn Falls and the River Keltie have been enjoyed for generations.

It’s a popular base for tourists exploring Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park and Rob Roy Country, or stopping off on their way into the Highlands.

The footpaths and cycle tracks which follow the old Callander to Oban railway are also well trodden, and

Set beneath splendid high and wooded crags, the cheerful town is home to many popular teashops and souvenir shops. Callander gained renewed fame as Tannochbrae, the fictional location for the original Doctor Findlay’s Casebook TV series. The town and its surrounding area has also been covered by Park Life magazine since 2008.

Pictures by Paul Saunders Photography

from the summit of Callander Crags there are spectacular sweeping views over the town and beyond to Stirling and the Forth Estuary. At the town’s centre is Ancaster Square. The north side of this is dominated by the former St Kessog’s Church, now home to the Tourist Information Centre. The Rob Roy connection is celebrated by the 79-mile Rob Roy Way which passes through Callander on its route from Drymen to Pitlochry. There is plenty of accommodation on offer in the town as well, ranging from small hotels, guest houses and B&Bs to the imposing Dreadnought Hotel towards the west end of the town.

Poppies Hotel and Restaurant Poppies is one of the most charming small hotels and restaurants in the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. Park Life | Walking

Bracklinn Falls/Keltie Water/Crags

Callander

A circular walk taking in the idyllic Bracklinn Falls, a very popular local beauty spot. Once over the bridge the route climbs through forestry before descending to the quiet upper glen, with a return by minor road. Good path and track with some steps - walk to the Falls is suitable for some baby buggies. Care should be taken at the Falls where there are steep drops and slippery stones. Drive to Callander on the A81 or the B822 via Fintry, turn right into the high street and take a left turn into a minor road, following signs for the Bracklinn Falls and Golf Course. Continue past the Golf Course Visitors’ Car Park and head up a very narrow road until you see a parking area and signpost for the Bracklinn Falls (NN639084). Go down the steps from the car park and follow the well-defined path through meadows filled with wild flowers, and natural woodland of alders and rowan trees.

Living Life

in the Round Originally from Persia and its bordering lands, the Felted Trellised Nomadic Tent, or Yurt, has been in existence for over 2,000 years. I became interested in its structure and use 30 years ago. I apply traditional methods of construction, using locally sourced ash to steam bend the components. I sew a heavy duty canvas to withstand our adverse weather conditions. More recently, after several trips to Kyrgyzstan, I’ve further developed the yurt concept, to provide accommodation for weddings and honeymoons, and luxury camping options for festivals (from T in the Park to Doune The Rabbit Hole, Port of Menteith) and outdoor education centres. – Trossachs Yurts at West Mossside Farm, Thornhill. I now offer workshops in yurt building and have built a very efficient wood fired sauna from a yurt- now available for hire. The fleet of 24 yurts range in size from the 2 person, 8 foot in diameter yurt to the Mega 40 footer, which caters

to banqueting 150 people. Sale or leasing possibilities create affordable options, particularly for campsites.

My apprentice Jamie and I have become very busy lately and recruit local young people during the summer. Winter months are spent increasing our stock of yurts, to replace any that become available for sale. The yurt lends itself ideally to storytelling and book week events for schools. For this reason I wrote a story to be told in the yurt of a merchant that travels the Silk Road of Central Asia. Accompanied by Marco the monkey, the merchant encounters all kinds of adventures and hidden dangers from Kublai Khan and marauding robbers, from flying carpets to Yeti. Our next one day workshop will be 11th April. Paul Millard Cambusbeg Farm, Callander FK17 8LJ Email: paul@redkiteyurts.com Tel: 01877 330 943

and majestic mountains, you’ll begin to understand why this breathtaking landscape has inspired writers and painters for centuries. You could enjoy a big adventure - or indulge in gentle contemplation of the magical landscape - with Forest Holidays. Mountain climbing, forest walks, fishing, canoeing, shopping and sightseeing… A break in Strathyre will please everybody. Forest Holidays’ Strathyre cabins are in the Queen Elizabeth Forest Park, watched over by the majestic peaks of Ben Ledi. Explore the great outdoors or simply enjoy the forest, a sanctuary for rare wildlife.

The Argyll location has 40 luxury cabins and is situated at Ardgartan where the pine-clad mountains sweep down to meet the shore of Loch Long at the edge of the Argyll Forest Park; just a short drive from Loch Lomond. A more perfect spot is hard to imagine.

Look out for red squirrels practically knocking on your cabin door, buzzards overhead and wild deer peeping from between the trees.

You can pack your days with action and adventure, hiring bikes or trying your hand at canoeing, gorge walking or a range of other pre-bookable activities. Or perhaps you prefer to luxuriate with a glass of champagne in your own private hot tub under a starlit sky, soaking up the serenity of the forest around you.

You will also find more of Scotland’s wild and natural glory in Ardgartan, Argyll. Driving past tranquil lochs

To make the most of your exploits in the wild, hook up with Forest Holidays’ own Bear Grylls.

Meet Jack Black - old soldier, survival expert, conservationist, entrepreneur, philanthropist, politician, Forest Ranger…and producer of a rather fine nettle tea.

Jack’s passion for the natural world began early as he explored the wild mountains and rivers of the Trossachs with his father. Naturally he was a boy scout, and as an adult he spent 27 years in the army, much of that time as a survival trainer for soldiers in arctic and desert terrains. You can meet Jack yourself when you stay with Forest Holidays at Strathyre. He runs a number of Forest Ranger activities, is the quizmaster at the weekly quiz and will always find time to answer pretty much any question you have about the local area, from where to spot the pine martens to which pub serves the best pint. Jack also runs his own business – Trossachs Wilderness Treks – why not check his Facebook page out and join him in a journey back to nature.

between April 20 -26. All our volunteers are local and live in the village in which they collect.

We can beat Cancer with your help! After I retired, I wanted to volunteer locally and I initially offered to be a collector in the annual House to House Collection and soon after joined the Local Committee. That was nine years ago and I now chair a team of very enthusiastic and committed volunteers. The annual collection takes place in April across the Strathendrick area involving nearly 100 volunteers in ten villages. It takes a lot of organisation but raises a huge amount of money. Last year it raised just short of £10,000 and we hope to smash that figure this year

We hold other fundraising events including Coffee Mornings, Ladies’ Lunch and Fashion Show and a Sale of Nearly New Clothes. We also receive funds from events at Golf Clubs in the area and from Balfron 10K last year. There are few families who have not known a friend or relative who has been diagnosed with cancer and we would encourage people to hold their own fundraising event - large or small - to help CRUK beat cancer.

please contact Janet Rutherford – 01360 449214. • CRUK receives no government funding and relies totally on public support • £351 million spent on research last year - £34 million in Scotland • CRUK researches over 200 different cancers

The Local Committee would assist with advertising, ticket sales etc.

• Over 30,000 people are diagnosed each year in Scotland

If you can spare a little time or would like to organise an event,

• Thanks to research, survival rates have doubled in the last 40 years

Lawnmower Advice from Martyn Buzzing

should mix with the old, a shake of the machine will help achieve this.

Spring is in the air and as the weather gets warmer lawnmowers up and down the land will end their winter hibernation and get to work on the growing grass. Martyn Buzzing has been with Fraser C Robb for 5 years and has repaired many, many lawnmowers, so we thought we’d ask his advice on how to get your lawnmower ready for the season, here are his Top 5 Lawnmower Tips.

3. Check the blade is secure and in good condition. Before doing this you should for safety reasons disconnect the spark plug as shown below. Be very careful.

Looking after your lawnmower will help preserve its life and be more efficient. Fraser C. Robb can give your lawnmower a full service, preparing it for another year. If the time is right to replace your model our expert team can advise you on the right model for the size of area that you require cutting.

1. Visually check the lawnmower for loose items and oil or petrol leaks. Leavers, wheels and cables should be inspected for signs of problems. One simple test is to press the drive leaver and pull the lawnmower backwards; as you do that the rear wheels should lock. 2 Check fuel and oil levels. Add new fuel and top up the oil. Petrol is guaranteed for 30 days so unless it was left full over the winter any new petrol

76 |

www.parklifescotland.co.uk

5. Walk the area that is going to be cut before going over with the lawnmower. Remove potential obstructions such as stones, bottles and cans etc. that if hit by the mower could be dangerous to the operator and people around it, plus cause damage to the machine.

4. Review the height of the blade. You may need to raise it for the first cut of the season if the grass is long.

Since start up in January 2000, Scotia Gardens has been involved in the re-design and construction of many gardens and estates. Like many of these gardens, we are ourselves, undergoing a re-design. Over the last 15 years Scotia Gardens has enjoyed creating some beautiful gardens for our clients to enjoy. Whether it’s a brand new patio, a new driveway or even just some new fencing, we have undertaken the work to excellent standards. The experience gained over the years has led to working alongside both Landscape and Building Architects and has allowed us to get more involved in ground works and building services. We are therefore proud to announce that Scotia Gardens has been re branded and will be known as Scotia Contracts. Scotia Contracts will continue to carry out the garden and landscaping services offered before but will also carry out ground works and building services such as: GROUNDWORKS Ground clearance Excavation & earthmoving Field drainage installation and ditch clearing

Individuality Built In Graham Sandals garden buildings are made to last. Individually designed and locally built with locally sourced Scottish larch they require no wood treatment, and weather beautifully to a silvergrey that sits naturally within the landscape. Roofs of cedar shingle or sedum living roofs complete the building. The distinctive design style of the buildings can be easily adapted to meet individual requirements and examples include incorporation of ski stores, verandas, log stores, multiple rooms. With 15 years experience in both garden and garden building design and construction, Moorpark bespoke garden buildings include garden rooms and garages. • Garden rooms are insulated, double glazed and come with the option of a cosy wood burning stove too. • Garages are generally uninsulated, with safety / security glass rather than double glazing. A garden room can add extra space to your property as a home office, a place to relax, a studio, or even an occasional guest room. Graham would be happy to come to visit you to discuss your building requirements, and provide a design and quotation.

Gardening Tips for April & May April

May

• Prune winter flowering shrubs after they’ve finished flowering eg Forsythia

• Continue to protect blossom of fruit trees from frosts as well as any slightly tender plants.

• Protect the blossom of fruit trees from frost

• Lift and divide over crowded clumps of daffodils

• Top dress planted containers with fresh compost and fertilizer

• Feed spring bulbs after flowering so they can build up their reserves for next years’ flowers.

• Chit and plant out potatoes

• Take softwood cuttings of tender perennials

• Continue sowing flower and vegetable seed

• Mow lawns as necessary and when weather is milder

• Tie in the growth of climbing plants especially climbing and rambling roses

• Earth up potatoes as the shoots grow

• Take cuttings of conifers

• Put in supports for tall growing perennials now.

• April is the best month – weather permitting to feed the lawn and to treat it with weed and moss killer.

• Plant up hanging baskets and bring them on in the greenhouse (frost-free) until the end of the month

• Keep on top of the weeding now to save a lot more work later on.

• Remove reverted (plain green) shoots from variegated evergreen shrubs

• Feed trees, shrubs and borders with a balanced fertiliser lightly forked into the soil, then apply a layer of mulch to help keep the weeds at bay and retain moisture.

• Watch out for infestations of pests such as aphids and slugs and deal with them before they get out of control.

Park Life Interview with Graham Scott

Benview Garden Centre

Benview has expanded … From gardening supplies and pet foods to include a well stocked farm shop, greenhouses and garden stoneware! Parklfe Readers Offer

20% Off All Plants! throughout April 2015

Do you have plans to expand in 2015? Benview, or Ward Toll Nurseries as it was then, started several decades ago. It’s changed a lot over that time none more so than in the last 7 years as we’ve expanded the range of goods from core gardening and
