Park Life meets local business owners James Roberts and Tony Macdonald

14fiftyseven J

ames Roberts and Tony Macdonald run two recruitment businesses – Progressive Travel Recruitment and 14fiftyseven – from Port of Menteith, with staff working for them from bases all over the world. Their new venture, 14fiftyseven, supplies PAs, nannies, other household staff and Lifestyle Managers for busy people of all kinds.

Why is the company called 14fiftyseven? It’s a reference to the year that King James officially named this beautiful place Port of Menteith.

What inspired you to start the business? a new approach to household recruitment

We saw that traditional jobs like nanny or admin assistant could be expanded on. The people we place help clients with a variety of tasks from admin to gardening, cooking, household finances, sometimes childcare, and more. There is commercial value in employing one versatile Lifestyle Manager to do several jobs. The variety provides more job satisfaction for the employee, too.

Who would benefit the most from the services you offer? 01877 385 640

Anyone who needs a helping hand. It’s not a onesize-fits-all approach. Our financial advisor in Stirling employs a Lifestyle Manager who helps with paperwork for her job, but also with jobs around the house and farm, from cooking to dog walking. It’s vastly improved her work-life balance. We recently placed a house manager in Surrey who not only looks after her employee’s home, but also helps with her hotel business. One client may be a dotcom start-up millennial, another a working parent needing an extra pair of hands.

What brought you to this area? The peace and beauty of the Port. We moved from Glasgow and previously have lived and worked in Dubai, London and Manchester. 01877 385640

Ever heard of Cyber Resilience? M

aybe not, but don’t worry if you haven’t, it’s just another term for making sure you’re not an easy target for hackers. There are a few things to check as you read on, that will help keep you or your business safe.

All devices now update regularly to load new versions and patches, which may make the difference between getting hacked or not. It’s not always convenient to update, especially when you’re in the middle of something, but it is definitely worth updating after work to make sure you have the latest software loaded, and that your device is secure.

HTTP (the extra S stands for secure). You should also see a padlock or similar icon next to it. These two things mean the website you are viewing is secure and any information you enter is encrypted (so hackers can’t see it). So, whenever you enter a password or card details, please make sure there is a padlock at the top of your browser and the address starts with HTTPS. Finally, please remember to never give any sensitive information over the phone, when the phone call hasn’t been initiated by you. If you do find your account has been hacked, please change the password as soon as possible. By Graham Flett - Microcroft

How many of you use the same password for everything, or a variation of it? How old is that password? If a hacker gets hold of one password, they will try it with a combination of your Email address to access other accounts. A huge concern I hear from customers is the amount of passwords used, and how on earth are you supposed to remember them all without writing them down. A Password manager is software based solution which manages your passwords, so you don’t have to remember them all.

TWO-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION This is an added layer of security, so a password itself isn’t enough to log in. For instance, if you set up twofactor authentication on Facebook, when you log in to a new device with your password, a one-off code will be sent to your phone to make sure it is you! So a hacker will have a hard time getting in to your account, unless they happen to have your phone as well!

When viewing a secure website you will notice the address at the top should start with HTTPS instead of

Changes at Three Sisters Bake

Park Life | Business

We recently asked for feedback on changes our customers would like to see at Three Sisters Bake. Here is what you told us… More sandwiches…lots of you asked for more sandwiches so we have introduced a range of new ones as well as bringing back some old favourites. Take a look at our menu at to see the new line up of sandwiches and other new menu items, including our expanded range of topped mac n cheese! Scones – “don’t ever change!” Many of you were kind enough to comment on how delicious our scones are. To celebrate their popularity we have included a voucher for a free scone below! Bacon rolls! We have changed our weekday breakfast menu in response to popular demand to include a bacon roll. At the weekend, our new pancake brunch menu is also proving really popular with our regular morning customers.

£5 voucher MIDWEEK LUNCH

*•Minimum spend £20 •Valid until 13th July 2018; excludes 25th; 28th May •Only one voucher per table •Not valid with any other offer.

Afternoon Tea – this has always been our most popular item for a special occasion but we had lots of feedback that you’d like to see a simpler version that didn’t call for a “special occasion” to enjoy. We’ve now introduced a “classic” afternoon tea which will run alongside our existing “luxury” version. With our voucher offering 2 for £17.50, its also a very affordable mid week treat! We’re excited about the changes and as a thank-you to our local customers for your continued support and loyalty, we have included some vouchers below to allow you to see for yourself. We look forward to welcoming lots of new and familiar faces over the coming weeks!

New cruises and connections on Loch Lomond A

The recent introduction of a new pontoon in Balmaha has allowed a significant increase in boat sailings and water bus services. It is also the only pontoon on the eastern shores of Loch Lomond to have disabled access.

t the end of March, Cruise Loch Lomond began a new schedule of cruises and water bus services. These complement the existing peak season schedule offered by Sweeney Cruises, from The Old Pier.

The Water Bus connection between Balmaha and Luss is very popular with tourists. Travelling by water also cuts down on car journeys and for Balmaha relieves pressure of car parking spaces. Balmaha and Luss are arguably Loch Lomond’s prettiest villages, both with much to offer visitors.

The Blane Valley Inn is back open, under new ownership.

he pub is now owned and operated by The Fraser Family, drawing on their many years of success with The Oak Tree Inn in Balmaha. Park Life Magazine visited recently to sample the new menu and to meet one of the owners Stuart Fraser, who said ‘We’ve long admired the BV Inn and when the opportunity came to own it we jumped at the chance. We’ve freshened up the look and made some positive changes, however as you can see the pub hasn’t lost any of its character’.

We started our meal with the 5 C’s soup, featuring carrot, coriander, cumin, chilli

and coconut which was a delicious starter. Onto main course and there were lots of good options to choose from and were tempted by the Confit Duck Leg, in the end though opting for a Crispy Spiced Chicken burger, with pulled pork and cheese, amazing! To finish Sticky Toffee Pudding, rounded off with a St Mocha Cappuccino.

Stuart explained that the opening of the Blane Valley Inn provided the opportunity to introduce a St Mocha Coffee Shop, ‘Especially during the day we wanted to create an environment where people can meet friends, chill out, enjoy good coffee and maybe a cake. We roast the coffee in Balmaha

and serve it here, already we’ve had a number of people purchase bags of the coffee beans from our Loch Lomond Coffee Co. to use at home, or give as gifts’. There is a good selection of Scottish gin, whisky, local beers and ales, as well as a comprehensive wine list available. The team plan to add to the menu over the coming months and welcome any feedback or suggestions. Our visit was on a Thursday and teams were starting to assemble for the Blane Valley Inn quiz night, a local tradition. It was good to see the good food and drink that the Fraser Family have introduced, along with a light, bright look and warm welcome.

The Blane Valley Inn Open Under New Ownership The Blane Valley Inn is now owned by the Fraser family, owners of The Oak Tree Inn, Balmaha. Open daily, serving great food and drink with an exciting new menu and the introduction of St Mocha Coffee. Dining reservations on 01360 770303.

0344 897 8000 Consistency is key to get results whether it’s to lose body fat, increase fitness levels or build muscle. One reason that consistency can go downhill is that most people live busy lives, work, family etc and workouts are typically one of the first activities to be sacrificed. Here are my tips for staying consistent… 1. Set short term and long term goals. 2. Write out a plan for at least a few weeks. It makes it easier to stay on track with your goals. 3. Keep a diary of your workouts. If you are weight training take a note of your weight, reps and rest periods so you can track your progress. 4. Schedule your workouts into your diary and keep to them, just like they are a meeting, appointment or other activity that you wouldn’t cancel. 5. Track your nutrition. 6. Be realistic. Don’t expect to go to the gym 6 days a week if you have other commitments. Start gradually then you can increase your sessions. 7. You won’t always feel motivated. To be honest, nobody feels motivated all the time, but if you are disciplined it will become a habit. Skipping workouts can be a habit too, so avoid the temptation. Steven Burgess Furniture & Interiors in Arnprior recently celebrated

21 years in business.

ot only do they sell furniture, sofas & kitchens from their stunning Showroom but they have a very successful interior design consultancy.

Fiona Kilgore and Peggy Gourlie, the Interior Designers, are kept busy with both residential and commercial interior projects. Currently they are involved in a couple of Show Homes in the Central Belt, private new builds and everything in between from a complete country house makeover to smaller projects – a single room, curtains, colourings and restyling of homes in the area. Both girls were asked what was proving to be popular on the interiors front this summer. Without doubt hues of green are very popular and this colour can be looked upon as a neutral colour when styled with natural wood and fabric textures including velvet. The green colour way can range from a soft sage to a mossy green right through to a bright emerald. Add tactile cushions and woven throws and statement glass accessories or a pop of a contrasting zingy colour to tie it all together. With the popular resurgence of dramatic house plants the addition of lush foliage can add style and freshness to any room.

Fiona said ”We are exhibiting at the Ideal Home Scotland Show at the end of the month at the SECC Glasgow and we will be showcasing some of our new furniture designs along with a few new Scottish Designers work – including stunning textiles from Emilie Georgia. Emilie is a talented Scottish Designer inspired by the natural world. She is well respected for her use of colour on linen, velvet and cotton and her designs are very different - we are delighted to welcome her to our stand over the course of the exhibition.” She added “Our own Exhibition stand will be reflecting some very dramatic interiors – big bold wallpapers – indeed very different with fabrics in vibrant zingy colours.

Just as popular are inky blues – both for walls and furniture. Don’t just go for one shade of blue – a selection of different blue tones can add interest and depth to any interiors project Wallpaper is big again this year with large scale designs proving popular with endless big, bold, colourful designs from wallpaper manufacturers. Flooring is always popular however the demand for a herringbone floor instead of a plain wooden floor is still a top 5 choice for Clients. 40 |

Choose a design that incorporates your existing colour scheme with a scale that suits the dimensions of the room. 2. The latest trend for bedroom storage is open shelving, storage ladders are especially popular and are less expensive than traditional chest of drawers and cupboards. Clothing can be stored in pretty baskets and, sitting along decorative items such as photo frames and ornaments, can become an attractive feature in itself.

By using an attractive pinboard you can change the display from time to time to keep it up to date and fresh. 4. A customised headboard allows you to choose a fabric with colours that will bring your new scheme together and will make the whole room looked ‘finished’. Looking to spruce up your home, but without splashing too much cash? We take a look at some key interiors trends and how to brighten up your home without emptying your bank account.

Upcycling... ... a way of creatively reusing items you already own into something new and exciting. If Pinterest is anything to go by, upcycling is one of the most popular trends today – and can save you lots. Instead of ripping out those old kitchen cabinets, why not give them a makeover? A lick of the right paint and some new door handles will transform your whole space or try Dream Doors pg38 or Dream Kitchen Makeover pg42 to give your kitchen a new look. 44 |

Going green... ...inject some green into your home, and create your own jungle in your lounge by adding lots of houseplants! ‘Indoor jungles’ are a funky and bohemian way to improve your indoor aesthetic, plus lots of research has gone into the benefits of having plants in your house – they can be calm and relaxing, and improve air quality. Benview Garden Centre, Oakwood Garden Centre and Loch Lomond Homes & Garden Centre have a large variety of plants for indoor and outdoor to give you that jungle look!

...where you lay your head should be a sanctuary… a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle. Popular colours for bedrooms just now are pale pinks and calming greys – why not paint a feature wall, instead of the whole room? This can save you some time and money, as well as being bang on trend! Head for the Bed pg 40 for a new luxurious head board or Wonderland in Balfron and Town & country Designs have lovely ideas to brighten up your home this year.

Robert Campbell explains the benefits of Origina® for a stunning new look...

Origina® is the fancy sounding name TREND Transformations applies to its kitchen worktop and bathroom surfaces. It’s beautiful, tough, durable and much thinner than other materials like granite, marble, engineered stone or solid synthetics, but equals or exceeds them in technical performance terms. To prove it, TREND Transformations offers an unrivalled lifetime material warranty. So, with the millionth Origina® already installed worldwide, what makes this distinctive material a winner in the kitchen and bathroom? LIGHTWEIGHT – Origina® is at least two thirds lighter than other materials, so needs less reinforcement and can be installed vertically and horizontally.

SLIMLINE – produced and fully sealed only a quarter of an inch thick, it fits right on top of existing surfaces without adding depth or substance. TOUGHER – the slimline profile doesn’t compromise strength and, unlike granite slab, Origina® survives the dropped bowling ball test without breaking. LASTING – TREND Transformations’ Origina® retains its luxurious good looks for so long, it is guaranteed against a lifetime of wear and tear. EASYCARE – unlike granite, marble and engineered stone, which need regular sealing and maintenance, Origina® just requires a wipe over with a damp cloth. RESISTANT – Origina® is certificated to be highly resistant to liquids, chemicals, scratches, impact and burns and is harder than natural materials. GREENER – made using a high percentage of recycled content like postconsumer glass and recovered granite and quartz, Origina® is green by design.

AFFORDABLE – Origina® is fitted over existing worktops and other surfaces, making it cheaper, easier and less disruptive to install, with less waste. VERSATILE – fit it on top of worktops, vanities or wash stands, on floors, stairways and pool surrounds, as splashbacks, shower liners and panels. BEAUTIFUL – made with Italian granite, quartz or recycled glass, it’s beautiful in black, refined in earthen tones, brilliantin white and bold in primary colours. But perhaps the biggest appeal of TREND Transformations Origina® is that it will be measured-up, made off-site and installed by our factory in Meikleour. What’s more, the expert, factory-trained fitters ensure a consistently high standard of workmanship and provide final proof that thinner’s a winner.

Why are our public libraries so important?

ell, they are vital for the community providing a welcoming, safe, and accessible space for all to enjoy. Our libraries Balfron Library are champions (Stirling Council Website) of community engagement, offering an array of services from reading clubs to computer classes, children’s events to local history groups. On top of borrowing books, you can also borrow CDs and DVDs, and a variety of electronic resources such as e-books, audiobooks and online magazines. You can use library PCs to access the internet, and even research your family history and genealogy through library archive services. Joining your local library couldn’t be easier: Visit the library that you want to join and speak to a librarian. You fill in a simple form, show your ID, and then your library card can be used in all community libraries in the council area – remember library services are free!

Mobile Library (interior) (Stirling Council Website)

In the Park Life area, we have access to some fantastic libraries mostly covered by Stirling Council area – and local villages without libraries are visited by a fantastic Mobile Library service either weekly or fortnightly, and there is also an Outreach service available to those who can’t make it to their library for health reasons. Some communities are supplementing this fantastic service with their own initiatives to encourage reading more too. In Gartmore, Aberfoyle, and Kinlochard ‘Wee Free Trossachs Libraries’ are popping up – small ‘honesty boxes’ housing a community book sharing project where you can borrow a book, and then put one back. Reading has been proven to help de-stress, and keep your brain strong – and can even help you sleep better. Libraries are wonderful places, and in this day and age we need them more than ever! By Abbé L. M. Farrell

Park Life Interview with Gabi Heron of Heron House Early Years I

t is widely acknowledged that nurturing in pre-school years is of vital importance to the positive development of children. Within the Stirling Council local authority there is an aspiration for Stirling to be the best place in Scotland for children to grow up in. Gabi Heron, owner of Heron House Early Years in Killearn, is a big supporter of this goal. Over the last 23 years Gabi and her team have provided positive nurturing, care and support for many children. She has also taken on a bigger advisory role, representing private providers on a number of key committees. Gabi and her team are rightly proud of the headline from the HMIE inspection of Heron House earlier this year which said ‘the setting has a welcoming and inclusive ethos where children are nurtured and encouraged to reach their full potential.’ At the heart of the success of Heron House are the loyal long standing staff, Gabi says ‘my team are amazing,

hardworking and positive people eager to enhance their own skills. We are pleased to have trained over 20 Modern Apprentices during the last two decades. Also many of the team are parents themselves and understand the issues that working parents face’. Straight after our interview Gabi and her team were going away for a weekend of bonding and team building in Dumfries. The nursery plays an important role in the village, with the children regularly visiting the glen, local park and shops, as well as singing for the residents of the nearby Abbeyfield elderly home. There are solid links with local nurseries and schools. Heron House Early Years facilitates work experience opportunities for Balfron High School's young people to experience hands on knowledge of my "World at work". Gabi has exciting news. From 2020 the funded hours of Early Learning and Childcare for 3 and 4 year olds will double. This will be FREE at point of delivery! No fees in advance thus facilitating parental choice and provider neutral settings. This will establish affordable, quality ELC across the sector and give Stirling's children the best possible start to life. For Gabi the conversation though always moves back to the children and how they are nurtured and supported across their formative years, as she says ‘children want to and need to know that we are interested in what they say and do and of course that we will observe, listen and respond positively’.

Generous residents do it again for CRUK

ith a final total in excess of £10,800 for last month's House to House collection in aid of Cancer Research UK, Strathendrick residents have once more made a significant contribution to the vital work of the organisation. Strathendrick Local Committee members are delighted with the result and would like to thank everyone who donated. They also extend their thanks to the many volunteer collectors for their time and effort without whom this tremendous fundraiser would not be possible. If you would like to hear more about the work of CRUK, including the impact that gifts in wills have on their pioneering research, you can attend their event at the Glasgow Science Centre on Wednesday 6th June. More details from Katy Williamson, Regional Legacy Manager - Scotland at 0131 339 7903/07918 072369 email The committee’s annual Ladies’ Luncheon will take place on Sunday 30th September at Culcreuch Castle, Fintry. More details to follow. 58 | MugStock is a festival for all ages. It’s a jolly civilised affair, safe for kids and fun for grown ups. Park Life invites the team at Fraser C Robb to share some gardening tips We all love our gardens and enjoy spending time in them. Many enjoy working in them, as much as relaxing in them, but you rarely here anyone telling you how much they love weeding! If you were to analyse the time you spend working in your garden each year you wouldn’t be too surprised to discover that a very large amount of it can involve weeding. We’ve got some tips from our friends at Fraser C Robb to help get that job over and done with, as quickly and effectively as possible. Prevention of course is as we know better than cure. Mulching with a thick 8cm layer of bark chippings will help keep those weeds at bay. This is best done in the spring and as well as helping to prevent weeds it will also help to keep moisture in the soil. Weeds can survive for years in soil, waiting for the right weather conditions. They germinate at lower temperatures all set to grow and spread quickly. The task is to remove not only the weed itself but its roots, otherwise they can re-grow. Weeding is best done by a long handled tool. To tackle weeds on paths, use a knife or paving brush. On lawns weeds a herbicide gel can be used. In severe cases you can use a weed and feed products.

Don’t forget Fraser C Robb stock all kinds of garden and ground care equipment. Call in to get expert advice.

Glasgow, Edinburgh & Stirling Tree & Hedge Stump Removal What we do with your unwanted tree stumps.

Using lawn-friendly specialist stump grinding machines, Glasgow Stump Removal will grind your tree stumps into mulch, removing stumps 6 to 12 inches below ground level. The mulch is used to fill the hole to ground level. This enables the ground to be restored back to grass or flower bed, or it can be paved over. We use various machines to efficiently and effectively grind stumps of different sizes and in awkward access locations.

Arborist Services We also provide full arborist services through our associates, including felling, crown thinning and lifting, pollarding etc.

Fintry Amateur Dramatic Society

are presenting

"JOURNEY'S END" by R.C. Sherriff Directed by Jonny North. September 26th, 27th, 28th and 29th September 2018. Jonny North has lived with his family at Boquhan House all his life. He is a very busy businessman but still makes time to devote to participation in F.A.D.S. committee and productions! He is very much a "hands-on" participant and has a great collection of "everything" re props and antiquities. He could in fact, be accused of holding on to the past and has always wanted to direct "Journey's End", a play set in the World War One trenches.

Captain Arthur Jewell North M.C. Northumberland Fusiliers. 1893 - 1918 We then asked, "what is it about and where can we see it?" He answered, "the play is set in Northern France during WW1 leading up to the battle of St. Quentin, March 1918.Set over the course of four days leading up to a massive German attack on the British trenches in 1918, "Journey's End" charts the tension and claustrophobia as the new recruit to the company, Lieutenant Raleigh, discovers that Captain Stanhope, his former childhood friend and hero has changed almost beyond recognition." R.C.Sherriff served as an officer in WWI and wrote ‘Journey’s End’ ten years after the war ended. You get the impression his writing has been greatly influenced by his experiences.

Jonny visits his grandfathers grave near Ypres As this year is the centenary of the end of WW1 it is very fitting that the production should take place in 2018. When he was asked "why this play?" he answered. "I saw this play whilst I was at school and it left a deep impression with me. This will be my first step into the shoes of the director of a play. It's been my ambition for some time and I always had this play in mind when I thought of my Grandfather who was killed around the same time and whose grave I visited only last year. I feel there will be many in our community who lost family in this dark period in our history and who will want to reflect, on this, the centenary as a mark of respect for what they endured." 82 |

“I wanted to perpetuate the memory of me I had known” His other works include: Goodbye Mr Chips, The Four Feathers, The Invisible Man and the Dam Busters. F.A.D.S. production will take place at The Playground, a converted barn, on Alan Cuthbert's farm, (a mile along the Fintry road heading from Killearn) this autumn between Wednesday 26th and Saturday 29th September. Tickets will be available from the usual contacts and outlets. Look out for posters with information in your area. We would also like to invite anyone with stories, memories and memorabilia that may be used in a planned exhibition of local peoples past and present of this war that will accompany this production to contact Jean Woodburn or phone 01360 440 745. It is important to remember those who fought and fell a hundred years on.
