Local business owner invents system to radically reduce heating bills With the cost of heating our homes every year a large chunk out of our incomes, are you wishing there was a way to enhance your existing heating boiler or heat pump and have a warmer home but cost you less.

Save up to half the cost of heating your home!

Then our local entrepreneur Mr Jim Bisset has the answer to your wishes. The owner of BisKit Controls Ltd based in Thornhill Stirling has invented a revolutionary new way to increase the heat from your radiators by up to 20%, stop the rusting inside your radiators, remove any existing dirt in the pipes and radiators, enhancing the heat transfer from your boiler to the heating fluid so your boiler gets up to temperature faster saving you money.

Hello, I’m Hydro Genie and I’m here to grant you three wishes...

The name of this innovation is Hydro Genie and comes in a number of combinations to reduce the bills in any size of home or small office. Testing of the the system was carried out in conjunction with the Scottish Government funded Scottish Environmental Technologies Network (SETN) on a 3 bed house where a 49% reduction in gas consumed was recorded.

To make your home instantly warmer

So if you are wishing there was a way to reduce your Oil, LPG, Gas or Electric bills then the Hydro Genie System can grant your wishes. Jim said: “It struck me some years ago that if there was some way to implement “Henrys Law” and “Graham’s Law 1 of Diffusion” into heating fluid, the transfer of heat to and from the fluid could lead to energy savings being made and a reduction in carbon emissions, so that’s how Hydro Genie Systems evolved into what we are able to offer clients to day, a retro fit system that can provide that next leap in boiler and heat pump efficiency for heating homes and commercial buildings.

To dramatically reduce your

heating bills To make your home more

Our systems are a cost effective alternative to renewable heating systems but can also enhance existing renewable heating systems”. BisKit Controls Ltd have approaching 200 systems installed and each install comes with a government granted 15% reduction on the full installation cost for everyone in the UK. 1

With installers appointed across the UK and Eire, BisKit Controls Ltd have a healthy order book and continue to provide Warmer Homes for their growing number of clients who continue to provide them with positive feed back. The outlay on a Hydro Genie System is quickly recovered from the savings made in around 2 - 4 years depending on the fuel spend and comes with a 5 year parts warranty and a performance agreement. Domestic Hydro Genie Systems and their Commercial Heating and Cooling HydrO2 Systems, are both trading names of BisKit Controls Ltd.

Take a walk on the Ben Lomond Start Rowardennan Car Park Distance 7.5 Miles | Time 4.5 - 5.5 Hours Climb steadily, through oak woods to start with and then through an area of cleared forestry where only the few silver birch trees remain at present. After a short while cross a track and continue on the uphill path.

STAGE 2 Ben Lomond is one of the most popular Munros, rewarding the 30,000 people who make it to the top each yeaR with fantastic views of the length of Loch Lomond and far into the hills to the north and the Trossachs to the east.

Cross a small bridge and soon there are the first views of part of Loch Lomond. Pass through a gate onto the open hill where cattle and sheep graze. The path continues to climb at a steady gradient, the views of the Loch becoming more impressive with each step. Pass through another gate. The ground becomes less steep and the final peak comes into view with the prominent zig-zag of the path visible on the right hand side.

Starting point is Rowardennan car park where there is an information centre and toilets. The mountain is not in view from the car park but can be seen from the metal jetty on the loch shore. The ascent starts from a clearly marked path at the back of the information building.

Keep following the path as it sticks to the broad ridge of the mountain. There are good views of the islands in Loch Lomond behind. The path climbs steeply on the final ascent to the summit ridge before levelling off to curve to the left around the rim of the very impressive eastern

14 |

e wild side... corrie which has been hidden until this point.

From the summit trig point there are stunning views in all directions, particularly of the southern end of Loch Lomond and its islands. It is rare to be alone at the top, as this is one of Scotland’s favourite mountains, popular with visitors and locals including fell runners who make numerous ascents in a year. The easiest and most usual route back is to retrace your outward route, but there is a rougher alternative which is not recommended unless experienced climber especially in winter.

STAGE 5 For the alternative, harder descent, take the rocky path north-west from the summit to descend very steeply to a col before climbing south-west to Ptarmigan at 731 metres. From here the route follows the nobbly ridge for much of the descent with excellent views down Loch Lomond. Approximately half way down the ridge, the distinctive shape of the Cobbler comes into view alongside the other peaks of the Arrochar Alps on the far side of the Loch to the west. There is a clear path although it is narrow and rocky in places. The wettest areas have been improved with large stepping stones. About two-thirds of the way down the path leaves the true ridge to descend below crags and continue on a

direct route towards Rowardennan.

STAGE 6 The path passes through a gate and descends more steeply. Before reaching some trees at the top of the woodland bear left to go through another gate and descend alongside the burn. After an open gateway there is a good view of a waterfall. Continue down through the woods until the road is reached. Turn left here and walk along the road passing behind the Youth Hostel. For the last section it is possible to take the path to the right along the shore. This passes a modern war memorial sculpture by Doug Cocker of Dundee. Ben Lomond and its slopes going down to the loch have been dedicated as a Memorial Park to commemorate those who have lost their lives for their country. From the memorial continue round the shore a short distance to return to the car park.

Autumn’s constantly changing and unreliable weather, offers us new exciting opportunities, provoking curiosity, investigation and learning. We have collected apples, made pies, jumped in leaf piles whilst investigating the Killearn Glen’s woodland wonder. We were matching leaves, counting conkers and racing twigs and bark in the stream. We “Trip-trapped” over the bridge in our wellies and waterproofs. Back at nursery we toasted marshmallows and drank hot chocolate outside. There was much dialogue and more learning opportunities in our outdoor environment than we could count! Our annual Christmas show, “The Nativity Sing Along” is held in Killearn Village Hall on Friday the 22nd of December at 3pm. All WELCOME. Tickets are £2.50 per adult. Children are free and donations also welcome. All proceeds are for The Beatson Cancer Charity, a charity close to our hearts. Our baby spaces are at a premium so please view and enrol in advance. 3~5 assisted funding places are available. Out of School places are limited,so only guaranteed for own nursery children. 100% fully qualified staff, passionate about the Early Years. Fiona and Gabi would be happy to chat, so come along, meet us and find out more of what we do. We wish a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to our families and friends, may 2018 be good to all!

I have two small children & being able to bring them along has been amazing, my toddler loves it and the whole atmosphere is so relaxed. Michelle is a fantastic instructor, always on hand to help with the kids while managing to conduct classes at the same time! As a PT I can highly recommend, I suffer from ms and she takes this into account and all my workouts are well thought out to suit my abilities. I have lost weight, gained muscle tone & feel a lot happier within myself. Highly recommend anyone to get involved xx” Amy “Classes are a great laugh! Exercise while having a laugh what more can you ask for. Being able to bring children to some of the classes is fab too as the kids have fun watching mum. SNOW WHITE & THE SEVEN DWARFS Fintry 30 Nov - 2nd Dec and 7-9 Dec 8 Performances

FADS are back again this Christmas season with the same Panto team that had packed houses and cheering audiences last year. This time round it’s a brand new script from the brilliant Alan McHugh who writes and performs in all Elaine C Smith’s pantos. He has kindly said FADS can hack into it and change everything to suit Fintry. Don’t worry, they will! They will ensure all the local villages and people get a mention and a leg pulled. A team of four choreographers will add that great professional flourish. Lorna Flisch has once again been planning the complex set changes from early August. Costume team and many others are already working to make sure FADS have another Great show. Tickets will be available in November through FADS website (search for Fintry Drama) and Facebook page links, as well as usual outlets.

Have fun Dancing & singing whilst making new friends! danceSing is a class combining FUN, FITNESS and FRIENDSHIP through singing and dancing. Created by ex professionally trained ballet dancer and fitness guru Natalie Garry. She is passionate about helping people find the balance in their lives through singing, dancing, fun and friendship in a relaxed and exclusive environment. What happens at a danceSing class? Your first class is a FREE TASTER First you sing with a professionally trained musical leader. There is no audition and you don’t need to be able to read music. You just need to want to sing and enjoy yourself. “I was told that I couldn’t sing at school, I realise that I can sing and it brings me such joy” Jane. The second part of the class is all about dancing we guide you through different genres of dance. There is no pressure to perform but for those who wish they can join in with all the other classes to perform. Sundown midsummers night at The Kelpies, flashmob at Marks and Spenser’s raising funds for worthwhile causes, concert at Oran Mor, radio and recording oppertunities. The danceSingers are very social and frequently go for coffee after the classes. We would like to invite you and your friends to a FREE TASTER we are looking forward to danceSing with you soon.

Park Life’s

Fit for Life BLOG

By Liz Ewing Personal Trainer & Sports Therapist

I can’t believe the Christmas season is almost upon us yet again. It is the hardest time of year to try and stay healthy. Let’s be honest, this time of year can be the ultimate test of your will power. December brings endless amounts of Christmas parties and social gatherings and they all centre around food and alcohol. In addition to this, there are plenty of time constraints, so not only do we eat poorly we tend to skip workouts.

Here are a few tips to help you stay on track. 1. STAY HYDRATED This is really something you need to focus on all year round. Dehydration can affect your mood, energy and leave you feeling sluggish. 2. WATCH OUT FOR LIQUID CALORIES Calories can escalate when alcohol is involved. Choose a gin and tonic or colourless spirit such as Bacardi or Vodka as these have lower calories. Also drink a glass of water in between your alcoholic drinks to avoid dehydration and to help with hangovers!

40 |

3. EAT PLENTY OF PROTEIN Protein helps maintain muscle mass, essential in losing fat. It also keeps us feeling fuller for longer, so it may also save you binging on too many mince pies! 4. GIVE AWAY YOUR LEFTOVERS As long as it’s in the house, it’s likely that you will eat it! Send your guests home with leftover Christmas dinner and any other snacks to avoid turning an indulgence day into a week! 5. KEEP UP YOUR TRAINING With December such a busy time, make this the time to maintain your fitness levels, don’t try to advance them. Try and get your workouts out the way with in the morning if you feel you might skip them later on in the day or make your workouts shorter. You can get a good workout done in 20 minutes. Plan on doing something active every day, even if it’s going for a fast pace walk. 6. LOOK AHEAD Finally, take time to set realistic goals for the new year. Don’t use scales to monitor progress. I always tell clients to avoid using scales. Instead take progress pictures or simply, how you look in the mirror and how you feel in your clothes. Remember “this months choices create next months body” Wishing you all a fantastic Christmas and New Year!

Maltesers Park Life | Business

CAKE! Ingredients

125g chopped butter 3/4 cup of milk 1 cup of brown sugar (firmly packed) 1/2 cup cocoa powder 3 lightly whisked eggs 2 and 1/4 cups icing sugar mixture 3/4 cup self raising flour 1/2 cup plain flour 3/4 cup malted milk powder 465 gram pack of Maltesers

185g butter, extra, at room temperature 1 Tablespoon Milk

Chocolate Ganache Frosting 300g dark cooking chocolate, finely chopped 1/2 a cup thickened cream 30g butter

Making The Maltesers Cake

Making Chocolate Ganache

You will need to place the chocolate, cream and butter in a microwave-safe bowl. You will cook on high for 2 to 3 minutes. Again, you should keep your eye on things, ensuring you stir every minute and you want a nice smooth mixture. Beat your extra butter with an electric beater until it has a pale and creamy appearance. Next add your malted milk powder, icing sugar and the extra tablespoon of milk. You want a nice fluffy texture. At this point beat in one and a half tablespoons of ganache. With the remainder of your ganache, leave it to one side for around 90 minutes. It should be thick and glossy but most importantly spreadable. This is very important! You will now need to cut your cake horizontally into four layers. It’s suggested that you use a serrated knife for this step. Pop your cake base on a platter. Divide up your frosting evenly in thirds. Use one third per layer as you layer the cake and finish with a layer of cake. It’s now into the fridge for 90 minutes to chill. The final step is to spread the ganache nice and evenly over the entire cake. Pay special attention to the top and side of the cake. Next decorate with Maltesers working from the centre out to the edges. You can make all sorts of fun patterns and introduce White Maltesers too if you like! If you want to duplicate the Christmas Pudding version simply melt some white chocolate and pour over the top of the Maltesers Cake.

Preheat oven to 160C or 320F Grease a 20cm round cake pan with butter or a light cooking spray. Be sure to line the sides and the base of your pan with a good baking paper. In a microwave safe bowl combine your butter, milk and brown sugar and cook on high. Be sure to stir every minute for around 4-5 minutes. You want the butter to be melted and the mixture to be a nice smooth texture. Grab your whisk and combine your cocoa powder and flour into your butter mixture. Next whisk in your eggs. Now it’s ready to pour into your round pan. You will bake for 55 minutes. Be sure to test with a skewer at intervals. When you skewer comes out clean, you know your cake is ready. Do not overcook. Let your cake cool for a few minutes prior to popping on a wire rack. You want your cake to completely cool. 44 |

East Loch Lomond Community Trust (ELLCT) aims to revitalise the area RESIDENTS and businesses from Buchanan Smithy, Milton of Buchanan, Balmaha, Rowardennan and in between are being invited to make suggestions and ideas for community improvements in the east Loch Lomond under the

auspices of a new community trust. Formed a year ago, the East Loch Lomond Community Trust (ELLCT) aims to revitalise the area after a period of inactivity by identifying and focussing on projects of

specific relevance and benefit to the community it serves. The area covered by the trust is defined by the river Endrick to the south and Rowardennan in the north, “The ELLCT aims to tackle problems

The boulder centrepiece at Balmaha which will be the focus of an innovative audio educational information project. (Photo: Dave Arcari/Loch Lomond Studios) specific to the area and fill a void which has become apparent in recent years,” explains trust secretary Joe Twaddle. “A more concisely defined geographic area will let the trust focus more clearly on projects which were previously difficult to identify and define – largely down to the community becoming fragmented.” Unlike the community council, community trusts can own and manage property as well as apply for grants and funding that the community council cannot. And perhaps more importantly, there can be more than one community trust within any community council area which allows individual trusts to concentrate on issues directly affecting its area and members. “The new trust has 130 members so far,” adds Joe. “And many have

indicated that they’ll be happy to be actively involved.” The trust is governed by eight local volunteers who were invited to the board as initial directors to ensure representation from all parts of the ELLCT area and who could bring a diverse range of skills to get the trust off the ground. The board will be up for re-election at an AGM to be held later in the year where members will vote for directors to take things forward. Already the ELLCT has been able to buy a phone box in Milton of Buchanan to house a defibrillator – a project spearheaded by first responder Helen McAllister with help from David Fraser who carried out the necessary electrical work and Sheldon Babcock who cleared the site.

Current ELLCT activity includes a funding application to install an audio information point beside the boulder that forms a centre point on Balmaha’s former toilet block site to form part of an exciting and innovative education project. Many ELLCT member have worked on the land transfer project and ownership of the site has passed to the trust following a recent Buchanan Community Partnership (BCP) extraordinary general meeting (EGM) where members voted to dissolve the BCP and transfer it’s assets to the ELLCT. Residents in the area will be kept up to date via email to members, notices on community noticeboards in the area and a soon-to-belaunched website.

Park Life takes a look at an organisation that has been supporting local communities for 20 years. Trossachs Search and Rescue Team, a totally self-funding charity, was set up in 1998, to help build greater resilience into everyday society. Over the last two decades the provision by local doctors, and coverage of the Scottish Ambulance Service, have been greatly stretched and largely eroded. Team members are required to undergo significant training and assessment, in order to support professional emergency services, mostly arriving on scene as the First Responders. In rural and remote areas or during busy periods, an ambulance can be some distance away. Community based First Responders are able to stabilise the situation and bring a degree of reassurance to the patient and relatives, whilst awaiting the paramedics. TSART members are also trained to fully assist air ambulance crews. During severe

weather events, the team 4x4 vehicles are available to the Scottish Ambulance Service, for transporting medical personnel and equipment. Fire and Rescue Scotland make 60 |

use of TSART search dogs, attending the Maryhill Stockline explosion and Glasgow Clutha disaster being the most notable. The dogs and handlers were put on standby for the recent Grenfell Tower incident, but the ferocity of the fire made any search quite futile. The dogs, mostly collies and spaniels, have been enlisted to assist the police, With 36 members, all volunteers, TSART is comprised evenly between men and women, drawn from communities across the area. In turn, these communities support the organisation, especially a number of valuable sponsors. Members bring a wide range of skills and, with on-going training, enable TSART to provide a First Responder unit, Search Dog team and Fast Water Rescue crews.

looking for missing people, alive and dead. Several coastline searches have been conducted at the behest of the Coastguard Service. The dogs, wearing special boots, cover far more rocky shore than any human.

SIMPLE SKILLS SAVES LIVES Today, in Scotland, ten people will have a cardiac arrest. Immediate action is essential. The only thing you can ever do wrong, IS TO DO NOTHING. Some important figures to begin with. Today, across Europe, 1,000 people will have a cardiac arrest, most of whom will die. This week, in Britain, 1,000 people will suffer a cardiac arrest, and most of these will die. And twenty fatalities will be under 20 years of age. Current survival rate is less than 20%. However, with immediate CPR (chest compressions) and fast deployment of a defibrillator, chances of resuscitation are greatly improved. Since December 2012, Trossachs Search and Rescue have been running regular and widespread instruction classes in CPR and defibrillation, free at point of delivery. (figures Jan - Oct 2017; 58 classes and 1,395 people trained). In five years, 111 defibrillators have been put in place, scattered throughout the circulation area of Park Life. There have been eleven uses of these defibrillators,

Our Joanne & Nikola with the ‘Not for Profit Organisation of the Year’ at the UK Heart Safe Awards 2017 in Manchester. with seven lives saved, a 66% success rate. Nationally, resuscitation stands at 16%. Simple skills really do save lives.

if an electrical shock is required,

Anybody can use a defibrillator, even with no training – just switch on the machine and follow the voice prompts. Designed to be safe and easy to use by a layperson,

to save somebody’s life. Besides

the machine will allow controlled delivery of the charge. And nobody will ever be prosecuted for trying formal classes, Trossachs SAR freely give instruction at the many opendays, Gala Days and events the members attend.
