Autumn has always been my favourite season so whilst the start of this month signifies the end of the summer along with the return to school and shorter days with darker nights, I don’t feel gloomy. September is the perfect month for a family walk, searching for conkers and kicking leaves. Foremark and Staunton Harold are ideal local destinations for a walk and they have now been taken over by the National Trust – see page 22 for Anotherdetails.place I’m planning to visit locally this month will be Conkers where the new RHS garden has been installed complete with the ‘mycellium’ structure and tiny clay mushrooms made by local schoolchildren. See page 18 for pictures. As you read the magazine you may even spot the first mention of Christmas in one or two of the adverts – yes Autumn is definitely here and I for one think it’s great!

• A pizza of your choice

In 2012, Tollgate Brewery relocated to the National Trust Calke Abbey Estate due to a strong desire from the team at Calke Abbey and the National Trust to bring brewing back to the estate. They currently occupy one of the National Trust’s farm buildings, Southwood House Farm, built in the nineteenth century where they run a 6-barrel brewery using traditional brewing techniques that would be recognisable to those early brewers in the 1800’s. Their beers are renowned locally and if you’ve visited The Tap at No.76 on Market Street in Ashby or The Milking Parlour out at Calke Abbey estate you will, no doubt, have had a chance to sample them.

• Two pints of their beer

We’ve teamed up with Tollgate Brewery to offer one lucky reader the chance to win a Brewery Tour package for two! This amazing prize, which usually sells for £25 per head, includes for each person

To be in with a chance of winning simply send your full contact details (name, address and telephone number) to: competition@lifemagazines.co.uk with the subject line ‘WIN a tour of Tollgate Brewery’. Good Luck!

The Tollgate Brewery story began in 2005 on the old Woodville site of Brunt, Bucknall & Co, known as the Wooden Box Brewery, the first brewery to be established in the Burton area in 1832. Woodville was formerly Wooden Box, named after the famous toll booth on the road between Ashby and Burton. The area around the Woodville roundabout (the modern equivalent of the toll booth) is still known as ‘Tollgate’ from which the brewery takes its name.

WIN, WIN, WIN!

Terms & Conditions: Entries close on Friday 23rd September. The prize consists of a brewery tour for two at either 1pm or 3.30pm on Saturday 15th October only. The prize is a tour of the brewery with tasters then two pints of beer and one pizza per person. The winner will be chosen at random from all correct entries. The winner will be notified and the winners name will also be published on our Facebook page. Multiple or automated entries are not allowed. We will not pass your details to any third party. RHS itsourishesgardeninnewhome

Garden sponsors Meta donated the garden to the National Forest, the garden’s charity partner at Chelsea, and supported the rehoming and installation of the garden at Conkers.

Joe Perkins said: “I hope visitors to the garden will feel immersed in and inspired by nature’s interconnectedness and the myriad of macro and microscopic networks in nature that depend on each other to heal, grow, and thrive. There is an urgent need to redress the balance of our relationship with the natural world, and there is so much to learn from the connections in nature.”

The garden is all about championing natural solutions to climate change and the threats to biodiversity and how we can both create more and protect our wonderful British woodlands. By rehoming the garden and making it more accessible we hope it will help people to connect with each other to better understand, care for and enjoy the National Forest.

e National Forest 18 IBSTOCK LIFE – Your handy guide to local services and businesses

The garden was designed by landscape architect Joe Perkins (see below) for RHS Chelsea, then reimagined for the larger space at Conkers, aiming to blend into the surrounding woodland.

future, and also the many community woodland groups in the Forest who use Meta’s social platforms to help manage their voluntary work.

He added: “The best bit is that the garden now has a permanent home, here in the National Forest.”

A beautiful prize-winning garden from RHS Chelsea, titled The Meta Garden: Growing the Future, opened in the summer at Conkers Discovery Centre.

Visitors can explore the rehomed garden that won Gold at the famous Chelsea Flower Show in May this year, walk under the spectacular ‘mycelium’ structure that forms the centre piece to the garden (see top right), and smile at the Great Timber Sproutness – a collection of tiny clay fungi made by primary schoolchildren in the heart of the National Forest and first displayed at Timber festival in July (see right).

The design highlights mycelium, the crucial relationship between soil, fungi and plants, which together form the basis of resilient forest ecosystems. This reflects the many communities and partnerships that have come together over the last 30 years to help create the National Forest, the volunteers who have helped Joe’s team recreate the garden at Conkers and who will look after it in the nationalforest.org

The Government has taken £6.1bn from annual inheritance tax receipts as more families find themselves caught in the net recently. Shockingly, the average bill has increased to £216,000, seeing loved ones and good causes losing out on gifts left to them.

HMRC figures released in July showed a significant increase in the number of estates paying inheritance tax in 2019-20. The Office for Budget Responsibility predicts further rises in the coming years, angering families who feel they pay enough tax in life, without their estates being plundered when they die.

The reason for the government bounty in inheritance tax receipts can be traced to the pandemic & rising house prices plus a freeze in tax thresholds. I wonder how many people would have predicted that Covid would lead to them paying more tax? One way people can halt the flow of their cash to the public purse, is for families and loved ones to discuss their wishes and get their wills written before it’s too late. These aren’t the easiest conversations to have but grasping the nettle can save an awful lot of money and heartache.

tax. This is due to law changes made in 2017. That being the case, if your latest will was made prior to then, it’s unlikely it was written with these savings in mind and the difference that makes to your inheritance tax bill can be huge. Worse still, if you die without a will then you’ll be left at the mercy of Government provisions which are not only harder to put into place but can lead to a bill that runs into six figures. When it all boils down, if you don’t have a will, then the treasury has written it for you, but I really don’t think you’d like that one.

John Bond LIFE – Delivered direct to your doorstep since 2005

Taxman raked in £6.1bn in Inheritance Tax since Lockdown. Have YOU put plans in place?

Money Matters

e

In addition to the clear benefits of a watertight will, there are numerous ‘easy wins’ that allow you to avoid inheritance tax totally legally. Within certain limits, gifts during your lifetime to family, friends or charities etc, all allow you to make the best of savings open to you and offer the chance not only to save tax but put smiles on the faces of those who matter most. I think you’ll agree that beats leaving them complications and a big bill in your will. After all, you’ve worked hard enough to deserve the last word.

As an example of the difference a will makes, a married couple can leave up to £1 million in cash and assets without paying a penny in inheritance

26 IBSTOCK LIFE – Your handy guide to local services and businesses

For inspiration on planting grasses I would suggest visiting Trentham Gardens in Staffordshire. The Trentham Estate is just off Junction 15 of the M6 and is well worth the drive. The Trentham Estate also offers a garden centre as well as a shopping village with restaurants.

Jobs for September

For bespoke contemporary and traditional garden design

Happy gardening!

There is a lovely, relaxed feel to gardens and parkland at this time of year. The leaves are turning to rusty colours, with occasional fiery reds or scrumptious yellows. The pretty perennial borders are less colourful now; a golden biscuit colour seems to take over from the summer colours.

A bright blue autumn sky is a terrific back drop to the autumn shades. I hope you will be incentivised to take a stroll into our lovely countryside, and I especially recommend Calke Abbey to appreciate the splendour of this time of year.

Remember to plant in groups or repeat planting in a rhythmic sequence throughout. Using grasses really does seem to extend the interest of a garden well into wintertime. A light early frost on the thin arching stems of an ornamental grass is a beautiful thing to behold.

• Order and plant spring flowering bulbs (but do not plant Tulips until there has been a frost) Bring indoors any house plants that you put outside for the hot weather

In late September and October, the ornamental grasses really show their value as they stand resolute and graceful in the borders. Excellent grasses for all sizes of gardens are Calamagrostis ‘Karl Foerster’ which are tall, upright and narrow in shape. Despite being whipped around by the wind, this grass always seems to stand back up again. A nice contrast is a lower soft swaying Stipa tenuissima which, at this time of year, becomes golden coloured and stays looking beautiful throughout the season. Please don’t be tempted to cut down ornamental grasses in autumn. Instead leave any cutting back until February. The top growth of leaves will help to protect the crown of the plant and insulate it from long hard frosts.

At Trentham, the success of the grasses lies in the repitition of groupings and the sheer area dedicated to them within the general planting schemes. Such planning principals can be taken home for use in your own gardens. gardensAutumnGarden

• If September is very warm keep watering newly planted plants

• Cuttings can be made from woody shrubs such as Fuchsia, and Lavender

NationalTrustWoodlandintheForest

The Woodland Trust are celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2022 and are proud to be the largest owner of new woodland in the National Forest with 19 woodlands covering 1850 acres (750 Hectares); all of our woods are free for the public to enjoy quiet informal recreation.

Michael Heseltine, Secretary of State for the Environment planted the first tree at Willesley Wood near Ashby in November 1991. Our woods range in size from tiny Georgina’s Wood at Appleby Magna (2.5 acres) to our flagship Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Wood at Normanton le Heath at 660 acres, opened in 2012. Our woods cover the entire National Forest area from Battlestead Hill on the west side of Burton on Trent to Felicity’s and Martin’s Woods to the north of Beacon Hill; all these woods command excellent views of the surrounding countryside. In 1993 we planted Centenary and Tigers Wood at Bagworth where you can find a memorial to the Leicestershire “Tigers” Regiment”. Towards the centre of the Forest there is a cluster of woods with Top Wood and Penguin Woods between Linton and Coton in the Elms. Coton Wood and Foxley Wood are nearby and appreciated by the local community for their views and walks. Foxley Wood has recently been thinned in places by the Heartwood Community Woodfuel group who have worked in several of our woods.

e

Over the next few years, you will see some of our woods having trees taken out. This is part of our thinning programme to improve the health of the woods, with trees of different ages growing together and providing more light to the ground for floral growth and biodiversity. It will give the wood a more natural look over time as nature decides what will grow, and where.

Dry recoveryweather Desert or oasis? e lawn survival guide for hot & dry times

The lawn is the focal point and socialising space of most gardens, and it needs love to survive through a dry spell. Annoying brown patches, slow recovery and weeds can all result from a period of drought. Do not despair though; there are a range of things you can do to help your lawn fight back. You might not be able to prevent all of the damage, but you can minimise it greatly by taking some simple steps. Some steps you can take alone, and some are in partnership with leading lawn experts, GreenThumb. Just like humans, a lawn needs to drink during hot weather. Lawns that can absorb and retain moisture will fare better. GreenThumb have created a treatment called Oasis, aptly named as this helps your lawn conserve moisture. Ideal for those with water meters, it can reduce the amount of water required at times of drought by Hot50-80%.spell on the way; ensure your lawn is ahead by watering regularly before the heat arrives. Moist ground will absorb much more than dry ground. Water when the sun is down, evening is ideal as the moisture will have the night to soak in when evaporation is at its lowest. Sprinklers are the most effective way to water, as they cover the area evenly and use less water.

GreenThumb’s specialist NutraGreen fertilisers can help speed the recovery of the lawn and can be applied even during a drought. Unlike the majority of regular lawn fertilisers, NutraGreen fertilisers are cleverly coated to ensure they only release their nutrients when wet, ensuring they do not scorch the lawn if the weather is dry. Correctly fertilising the lawn will vastly shorten the recovery period after drought.

Pesky weeds, blown in on the dry heat from hedgerows or neighbouring gardens will germinate once moist. GreenThumb offer specialist herbicide treatments to help control them. Even previously weed free lawns can become victims to these airborne seeds.

We have recently started to provide online consultations. These can be used to ask the practice a question, which may be medical or something administrative. There is also a great deal of NHS self-care advice available through this service. This service is strictly for non-urgent advice and queries only. We will endeavour to respond within three working days, or more quickly if we can. The service will be available from 6am in the morning until 3pm each day. You can access this service via the practice website. It’s on the home page titled “Online GP Services”. At the moment, it’s only available via this route although an App for smart ‘phones is in development. If you have an NHS login you can use this to log in otherwise you will be prompted to set up a login. We can send you secure messages back through this system as long as you have logged in. All activity which happens through these online consultations is stored on your GP record so there is a permanent record of your query. If you have any non-urgent queries questions,or please do give this new system a try. Bill

The past few weeks have given us some harsh weather to face, and sadly a great many wild animals and plants have been struggling. This is certainly a saddening situation, but there are some wonderful and uplifting remedies for this.

Recently, TCV have been developing new relationships with a range of fantastic community led projects. This includes Whistlewood Common near Melbourne and Albert Village Allotments near Swadlincote. These projects are focused on restoring wildlife populations, growing a range of incredible organic food and bringing huge benefits to people through improving community cohesion, providing food security and nature engagement and education. It has been inspiring to spend time getting to know these projects and those involved, and we’re sure that if you spend time with us at these projects you will feel the same.

Over the next few months, we will be organising volunteer days on Tuesday and Saturday each week at nature reserves, country parks and at community land-based projects throughout the National Forest. No doubt we will also encounter a range of charismatic wildlife too; recent highlights have ranged from ravens and fallow deer to southern hawker dragonflies and ancient oak trees.

If you’d like to come and meet like-minded people, learn new skills and see a range of fantastic wildlife, you can find us on social media to see what we are up to and get in touch. See @ TCVNationalForest
