Like the whole of the UK and many people around the world, the team here at Ibstock Life were stunned and saddened by the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 8th September. For all of us she was a constant and steadfast presence in our lives, and the one person we could rely on to hold true to her values as the world around us underwent fundamental changes.
The Queen notched up some remarkable achievements during her 70-year reign. Since 1952 she travelled to more than 100 countries and made more than 150 visits to Commonwealth countries including 82 state visits. She worked with all 15 UK Prime Ministers, met 13 US Presidents and 7 Popes. She was an extraordinary figure, and we feel proud and very, very lucky to have had her in our lives for as long as we did. She will be greatly missed and on page 8 we look at five of her memorable moments.
Now we must look forward to a new era for both the royal family and the UK as King Charles III begins his reign. As the longest-serving heir apparent in British history he has had plenty of time to prepare for this and to learn from the example set by his mother. This should give us hope and popular opinion so far is that our new King will continue her good work.
Just before I sign off, here’s a reminder that the clocks go back on 30th October.
It’s a fantastic way to target potential customers and great value for money. See www.ibstocklife.co.uk or call us on 01530 417739 for details.

Our beloved Queen always retained a wicked ability to surprise. Here we celebrate occasions when the delight, dominance, devilishness and charm of Elizabeth II really came to the fore.
At the 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony the stage was set, and the eyes of the world were on Stratford. A video begins showing Daniel Craig’s James Bond arriving at Buckingham Palace, where he is escorted to Her Majesty by two loyal corgis.
The pair then make their way to a helicopter and after a whistlestop tour of London – not to mention a wave from Churchill – seemingly parachute jump into the stadium!
Imagine, amidst a disastrous year, you then are obliged to give a speech to mark your 40th anniversary as the Queen of Great Britain.
It would have been acceptable not to mention the woes that had recently engulfed her family –from the revelation of lusty phone calls between Camilla and Charles to the separation of Andrew and Fergie, alongside the blaze that literally engulfed Windsor Castle – but instead she faced head-on the catastrophes that threatened her exemplary reign.
The sword and the cake, 2021
Just like in the mythical days of King Arthur, the notion of a monarch wielding a sword to defend the people and land of their kingdom is branded in our imaginations.
It was this irresistible urge then, which spurned our very own Queen to take up a ceremonial sabre to defeat her foe. The battlefield: the 2021 G7 summit in Cornwall. Her target: an enormous cake.
The rambling rose, 2008 “It was clear from the moment we stopped
that they hadn’t recognised the Queen,” began former Royal Protection officer Richard Griffin, referencing some American tourists near Balmoral. Upon asking where she lived, the Queen said “Well, I live in London, but I’ve got a holiday home just on the other side of the hills.
The Americans asked if she’d ever met the Queen to which she replied, “I haven’t, but Dickie here meets her regularly.” They excitedly took pictures with the pair before going on their way. Later, the Queen joked, “I’d love to be a fly on the wall when he shows those photographs to his friends in America.”
Lady Ma’amalade, 2022
A very special Jubilee moment was the video of our magnificent late Queen with fellow national treasure, Paddington Bear, who had come to have tea at Buckingham Palace.
As is befitting of our beloved bear, chaos ensues: tea is greedily slurped, china teapots are nearly broken, and cream cakes are squirted.
By way of apology for his poor behaviour
Paddington offers Her Majesty a marmalade sandwich, but she already has one tucked away in her bag: ‘for later’.

Autumn is a magical time of year at Calke Abbey. It signifies a period of change, as the colours around us begin to shift from the bright greens of summer to vivid goldens and rustic reds. There’s plenty to do this Autumn, whether that’s enjoying a peaceful walk through the parkland or observing the deer in the Deer Park.
When trees begin to shed their leaves, they leave colourful piles of red and orange as far as the eye can see. This is the perfect time for an autumnal amble. Follow the waymarked blue route through Serpentine Woods and take in a kaleidoscope of colour, as sunshine peeks through the bare trees. Enjoy the peace and quiet apart from the crisp crunching of leaves on the ground as you walk.
Learn more about the parkland at Calke on a park guided walk. Available every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday at 11am or 2pm on a first come first-served basis. However, please double check the website (www.nationaltrust.org.uk/calkeabbey) to see when they’re running. Hear stories about the ancient parkland, which has been through a long journey from its roots as a religious ground to its status as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and National Nature Reserve. These guided walks are also your only chance to enter the Deer Park, witness the deer up close and learn about their history at Calke. You’re bound to discover something new on these fascinating rambles, so make sure you get there early.
Autumn is also the time to stop by the Deer Park, as deer rutting season takes place from October onwards. Watch out for bellowing roars and keep your eyes peeled for clashing antlers, as the stags compete for the females. Bring a pair of binoculars with you, as you won’t want to miss this spectacular behaviour.
Visit the gardens mid-October to see a vibrant display of homegrown pumpkins and gourds on the Auricula Theatre. You can even purchase
the pumpkins and gourds from Thursday 27th October to decorate your house and prepare for Halloween. This is truly a highlight of our Autumn offer and is well-worth visiting. At the end of the Physic Garden is a small orchard, which produces a variety of local and historic apples. Take a seat to admire them in full view and soak in the peaceful atmosphere. At times during October, the gardeners will also be selling the apples, allowing you to enjoy fresh apples at home.
Our frontline staff follow Government guidelines for visiting you in your home and they are fully vaccinated. LevLaw Ltd remains here for you.
Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually.
But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT).

A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries.

If the surviving partner wants to move to another property, they can still sell the property and the proceeds to be used to purchase a new property, the terms of the Trust remain over the new property.

It has cooled down but there are plenty of reasons for you still to be in the garden because October is a busy time of year, and of course being outside on a bright autumn day is fabulous.
It’s time to take out any summer bedding plants and empty seasonal hanging baskets and pots. Tidy leaves as they fall, especially on lawns to stop yellowing of the grass. Clearing leaves will reduce slippery patches on paths too. However, remember that the wildlife need some over grown areas, especially the hedgehogs and birds. Important too, is a yearlong supply of bird food to encourage movement and song into your garden.
I suggest you take a look at your fruit trees if you have any. Cut out any dead, diseased or crossing branches and think about the shape you are creating and the height at which you can pick next year’s fruit.
Divide perennials such as Geraniums or Achilleas that have become too big by digging them up and dividing them with a fork. Spread divided plants around your borders so you have the same plant multiple times to give rhythm and unity to your planting scheme. Alternatively, plant together to create a block of colour or texture.
Hellebores (Christmas roses) may need a bit of a prune to the old shoots to reduce lanky spread and make way for fresh growth. Now is also the time to cut back any tall roses to prevent wind rock and to prolong the flowering display on repeat flowering varieties.
October is the last month for cutting the grass and a very good month for preparing for new grass areas, either with turf or through seeding. Prepare the area for lawns well. Also any paths or edges of lawn which have become bald will benefit now from a scattering of seed.
Compost heaps are the heart of a good garden so look after it now; turn it over and tuck it up for winter with a topping of old carpet or sack to keep warm and speed up the rotting.
Looking forward, you might be able to treat yourself to a future vision of colour via a little
bit of shopping..... plant bulbs for next spring now. Think of colour and what you want to see, a pastel pallet perhaps, or a riot of vibrant and exploding colours to look forward to. Check out the height and flowering time of the bulb and decide if you want a succession of slightly different flowering times to elongate the spring colour. A wonderful but short lived display is simply achieved by a tulip of one colour planted en masse.
In the vegetable garden dig over empty areas. Main crop potatoes will be ready for lifting and broad beans are ready to be sown.
Happy gardening!

Have you ever thought how different types of woodland make you feel? The different age, size and shape of trees in the National Forest have made it the perfect choice for Treefest, a research project running until the end of October to help understand the benefits of treescapes on our wellbeing.
Treefest invites people to take part in one or more of eight walks throughout the Forest, and record how the walk makes them feel.
It’s part of Connected Treescapes, a research project led by the University of York, that aims to break new ground in understanding how the UK’s treescapes benefit our wellbeing. It is funded through the £14.5 million Future of UK Treescapes programme and aims to explore the wider value of trees to wellbeing, cultural heritage, and wildlife.
Treefest has been devised by the University of Derby in partnership with the National Forest and health and wellness company Go Jauntly, to use the varied woodlands of the National Forest to further understand how walking amongst different
treescapes can make us feel. Data collected will be used by the wider Connected Treescapes team to help create tools and knowledge to inform the design of future treescapes for the benefit of future generations and the rest of the natural world.
You can take part in Treefest by downloading the free Go Jauntly app on your iPhone or android device and answering a few simple questions before and after your walk. Researchers will then study this data to see how various treescapes relate to wellbeing, with all data being anonymised and averaged before publication.
Available walks in Leicestershire and Derbyshire are at Robin Wood, Calke Abbey, Beacon Hill and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Wood. Or you can explore further afield and walk the remnant ancient Needwood Forest at Jackson’s Bank, Dunstall or Anslow, or try the Rosliston Treefest walk.
As well as helping to influence future treescapes, as a huge thank you for taking the time to participate in the research, all those who take part in the walks before the end of October will be entered into a prize draw to win one of twenty £100 gift vouchers.

At Ibstock Community College, we continue to work hard to tackle discrimination and promote equity for all. As part of this, we are currently in the process of working towards our Rainbow Flag Award and have successfully completed the first three sections of this so far.
The Rainbow Flag Award is a national quality assurance framework for primary schools, secondary schools, SEND schools and colleges. The award focuses on positive LGBT+, (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, plus other related identities), inclusion and visibility.
A large part of our work on the Rainbow Flag Award has involved empowering ourselves and our school community through the use of inclusive language. We found that there were sometimes misconceptions and
misunderstandings surrounding the use of language or definitions of words, and so educating ourselves and others about this has been a key focus for us. As a school we have done this in a range of ways, such as through assemblies, lessons, celebration days, staff training, and family learning events.
For anyone wishing to learn more about this, the Stonewall website has a list of key terms: www.stonewall.org.uk/help-advice/informationand-resources/faqs-and-glossary/list-lgbtq-terms.

As the Elizabeth II era assumes it’s cherished place in history, we look at the changing elements that will soon play themselves out in a very public way
It is doubtless with a bittersweet heart that King Charles III embarks on his new role as Head of State. Having waited 73 years to take up the post he was literally born for, His Majesty has long dreamed of this historic moment. Yet, the price of power comes at the loss of his greatest love, mentor, and ally; his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.
While Charles assimilates to a new life and role, this is not necessarily the only challenge he has to face; for the opinionated Prince must now become the impartial King.
Having waited in the wings for the past seven decades, it would have been ludicrous for the Prince of Wales to not only nurture opinions on society and the world-at-large, but to express them also. From environmental issues to a desire to revive grammar schools – and most recently a disdain for the government’s Rwanda deportation plan – the Prince of Wales has never shied from letting his thoughts be known, often instigating change via his various charitable and passion projects.
The issue here is that a prince may have such hobbies and persuasions, whereas a king must not.
One of the most abiding and best-known rules of the British constitution is that the monarch stays out of politics. This is the foundation on which the monarchy survives in a democratic society
regardless of what personal gains may be made from wielding its enormous power, publicly or otherwise.
Thankfully, King Charles is a brave, sincere, grounded member of the royal family, who takes humility as a cornerstone of behaviour having seen such a lack of it in many of his relations. He understands the next step in the line of Windsor is not in questioning what is right and proper, but more prioritising the elements of society that need his authority and guidance most, during what are difficult times for us all.
As king, Charles is responsible for carrying the weight of not just a nation, but the other 53 Commonwealth countries, across 14 realms, which now fall under his rule. He must be a champion of the people, cultivating pride when times are good, and courage when they are bad.
It is a mighty task, but one he is more than qualified for. He will undoubtedly be a very different monarch, yet what should reassure us all is the fact he has inherited his mother’s values, strength, and sense of duty.
Now, a new dawn has come… God save the King.

Alfred is a remarkable boy. After suffering a brain injury at birth a little over 7 years ago, he was diagnosed with quadraplegic cerebral palsy after his mum noticed he wasn’t hitting the same milestones as other babies his age. Since that diagnosis, he has been defying the odds on a daily basis.
His parents, George and Emma refused to accept it when the doctors said he would probably need a wheelchair forever and the speech and language therapist said that he would never talk. Instead, they researched his condition and the pioneering treatments available to help him.
One such treatment is only available at the world-renowned NAPA Center in Boston, USA. Founded in 2008, the centre offers cutting edge physical therapies to enable children to achieve developmental milestones. These therapies include the NeuroSuit, which essentially provides an external skeleton to frame the body from the outside and improve body alignment. This ground breaking therapy forms the pillar of the centre’s 3 week intensive therapy course.
Alf has been to the Napa Center twice already and following his last visit, he was able to get himself into a sitting position unaided, which he could not do before. This shows how much he gains from these courses.
To add to the challenges he already faces, Alfred was recently diagnosed with epilepsy. After taking part in a week-long in-patient observation, doctors picked up as many as 17
seizures every night, meaning his brain is not getting the opportunity to rest and repair during sleep, as it does for most of us. This makes his progress all the more astounding.
Unfortunately, the treatments offered at the NAPA Center are not available in the UK and need to be self funded, with family & friends fundraising regularly. George and Emma are desperately hoping that Alf will be able to attend the NAPA Center again this year and are fundraising with this as the goal. In July, a group of friends and family ran the Thunder run at Catton Park, which involves doing as many laps of a 10km track as possible over a 24 hour period - yes, even in the dark! At the start of September Emma walked the 94 miles of The Staffordshire Way over 4 days to raise much-needed funds.
If you would like to find out more about Alfred’s journey, you can follow the ‘Team Alfred’ Facebook page. If you are able to contribute towards his treatment, you can scan the QR code with your phone’s camera. Anything you can give would help Alfred one step closer to his dream of running around the playground with his friends.

Patients often come to us requesting a prescription for Diazepam for fear of flying or to assist with sleep during flights. Diazepam is a sedative, which means it makes you sleepy and more relaxed. There are a number of very good reasons why prescribing this drug is not recommended.
• The prescribing guidelines doctors follow states “the use of benzodiazepines to treat short-term ‘mild’ anxiety is inappropriate.”
• Benzodiazepines are only advised for the short-term use for a crisis in generalised anxiety disorder in which case they are not fit to fly. Fear of flying in isolation is not a generalised anxiety disorder.
This means doctors would be going against their prescribing licence for diazepam if prescribed for fear of flying.
• The use of such sedative drugs can make you fall asleep, however when you do sleep it is an unnatural non-REM sleep. This means you won’t move around as much as during natural sleep. This can cause you to be at an even
further risk of developing a blood clot in the leg or even the lungs.
• Diazepam stays in your system for quite a while. If your job requires you to submit to random drug testing, you may fail this having taken diazepam.
Given the above we will no longer be providing Diazepam or similar drugs for flight anxiety. This policy decision has been made by the GP Partners.
Full information about this including fear of flying apps and courses can be found on our website.
