PROTECTING YOUR FAMILY’S INHERITANCE Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually.

But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees.

beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased’s share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children’s inheritance is protected.

The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT).

A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased.

A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property they can still sell the property and the proceeds be used to purchase a new property; the terms of the Trust remain over the new property.

The surviving partner, under the terms of the Trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life.

On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the

SPOTLIGHT ON...

SIGN UP FOR THE CANAAN TRUST 25TH ANNIVERSARY

SLEEP-OUT CHALLENGE!

Each month we turn the spotlight on a local charity or community group sharing details of the work they do, who they help, and how they do this, as well as details of how you could become involved and offer support whether this is by donating time, raising funds or simply spreading the word.

This month’s spotlight charity is The Canaan Trust.

The Canaan Trust, based locally in Long Eaton, provides 24-7 support and accommodation to men, women and families who find themselves homeless, or in danger of becoming homeless, 365 days of the year.

Since launching in 1995 the Trust has supported and cared for 1000s of individuals and families whose lives have been impacted by homelessness helping them in their time of crisis and supporting them as they seek to rebuild their lives. That’s 25 years of help and support!!

Accommodation is the visible tip of the support and service which the Trust provides. They also have a Professional Counsellor working as a member of the team and all of the staff are Mental Health First Aid Trained. The Trust has invested heavily in its own education facility with tutors providing sessions in literacy, numeracy and I.T. In addition, an extensive range of other courses are provided delivering a wide range of ‘Living Skills’ including healthy eating (including cooking), budgeting, first aid, confidence building, job seeking and employment skills etc.

No-one chooses to be homeless. It can and does happen to anyone. It can be the result of losing your job, of a relationship breakdown or mental health problems. These can all rapidly lead to an individual becoming homeless. Some important facts to know: • Homelessness is not simply restricted to those who are Street Homeless.

• 62% of homelessness is hidden - sofa surfing, sleeping in cars, families living apart • 40% of homeless are families • Many individuals and families are one life event away from being homeless The Trust is dependent on charitable donations to enable it to provide support and care to those in need. On Friday 17th April the 25th anniversary of the launch of the Canaan Trust will be marked with a sponsored Sleep Out Challenge in Market Place, Long Eaton running from 7pm to 7am the next morning. Experience a typical night for those without a home and without a bed to sleep in whilst raising much-needed funds. Each participant is asked to raise a minimum of £25 through sponsorship.

THE BIGGEST MYTHS OF WEIGHTLIFTING Five training myths you need to avoid:

1: ‘SPOT’ REDUCTION

Many people are told that doing certain exercises will make you lose weight in certain areas. This isn’t the case. Doing sit up after sit up isn’t going to necessarily give you toned abs. You’ll find that you’ll lose your excess fat in certain areas last. For women this is more common in the hips, thighs and tummy area and men, in the waist and tummy area also.

LIFTING MAKES YOU BULKY

Lifting certainly doesn’t make you bulky. Especially if you are a woman. We just simply do not have enough testosterone to be building massive muscles. Put those lighter dumbbells back and listen up.

Challenging your body through lifting heavier is the key to getting those results you want. As most women lifters will agree, lifting those heavier weights will help you get leaner and more defined.

CARDIO IS THE ONLY WAY TO LOSE WEIGHT

Even spending 30 minutes at the gym, 2-3 times a week is enough to start reeling in those benefits.

Not exercising can cause a higher risk of developing sarcopenia (loss of muscle mass) which contributes towards reduced functionality and strength. So, basically getting in that training will help not only with better functioning, but with improved balance, co-ordination, confidence and weight management.

5: TONING USING LIGHTER WEIGHTS OR HIGHER REPS

The “Pink Dumbbell Myth” is the idea that using lighter weights for higher reps is going to tone us up.

This just isn’t true.

So, can you still train this way? Yes! Of course. But whether or not you should be doing it all depends on your goals and level of fitness. If you’re looking for strength choose 1-6 heavy reps. For gaining muscle and size, try 8-12 heavy- medium reps and for endurance, have a go at 12-20 reps. You need to pick up enough weight for you to only just manage those reps. Challenge your body.

Cardio does play a big role for burning that excess fat, but it isn’t necesssarily the most efficient option when n it comes down to losing weight.

Concurrent training (both cardiio and strength) can be seen as the best way to go. Strength training helps maintain and build muscle and d the more you have of it... the more calories you burn.

An effective programme will include both cardio sessions as well as strength training. Also be sure, to keep a healthy diet in check as well. Bringing all these three components together will definitely maximise your progress.

4: TOO OLD TO LIFT WEIGHTS

There is no age limit on lifting weights. In fact, lifting weights will make so many improvements as you get that little bit older.

OUR START TO 2020 Wow, what a busy start to 2020 and it looks like it will carry on in the same vein.

We took delivery of a new 14 seater disabled access bus in January. We are now settling it in to service whilst monitoring it in case any problems arise.

Other than one issue with the automatic step it is now in regular use. As we part exchanged for one of our older buses this will be a good long term change. Keeping the buses clean with the weather at the moment, however, is a never ending task.

January “Grow Cook Share” meals have been successfully held at the Church Hall and Wakefield Court. This leaves us planning the tasks required at our allotment to provide produce for future events.

The weather is a major factor which will define when we can get onto the ground to turn it over and start to make progress. If you fancy helping in our “Green Gym” give us a call, all help welcomed.

We have also had our first meeting of the year with the “Download 2020” organisers to discuss their CASTLE DONINGTON VOLUNTEER CENTRE

plans at Donington Park and their request that once again we support the transport needs of the Disabled Access campers. More will follow as things develop.

Dogs and cats can develop dental problems at any age and many over six years of age have some degree of dental disease.

DENTAL DISEASE CAN BE PUT INTO THREE CATEGORIES: Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums. You can easily see this by the increase in pinkness of your dog’s gums, especially at the gum line.

Tartar is the accumulation of plaque on the teeth, usually starting at the gum line.

Pyorrhoea is the most serious – it is pus in the mouth, usually between the teeth and the gums.

Not only does it cause decay and bad breath but the bacteria may enter the blood and travel to other parts of the body causing more serious problems.

Daily removal of plaque is the key to healthy teeth.

Brushing your dog’s teeth can be an easy and fun procedure. It is easier to start from puppies as they will get used to it very easily. You need a very soft

bristled toothbrush and pet toothpaste, which is usually meat flavoured.

In dogs that will not allow tooth brushing, the next best thing is a dental diet. There are many dental chews available and these do help, but be aware that on their own they are sometimes not enough to prevent dental disease.

Once visible tartar has formed on the gum line, this means that there is disease e under the gum as well. Thiis needs to be speciallly removed. It is time for a professional cleaning.

THE CONSERVATION VOLUNTEERS

GREAT NEWS!

TCV has had some very good news lately. We have had a funding application granted, which means that there will be a new Green Gym starting up in Measham this spring!

What on earth is a Green Gym? Green Gyms are TCV groups which are designed to have a positive effect on the life quality of the people who take part. We all know that volunteering is really good for people – particularly if it is physical, with other people, active, and outdoors in a green space.

Green Gyms maximise those benefits, through community projects typically involving gardening or food growing.

Volunteers complete a questionnaire when they start, focusing on different areas of their lives: how active they are, how happy they are, how they feel about their local community, and every three months they complete the questionnaire again.

Across the whole UK, we find that our volunteers become measurably more active, happier, and

more positive about their community, through participating in a Green Gym. Indeed, the NHS is now considering funding Green Gyms as a preventative medicine!

Our Measham Green Gym will be accepting people referred by their doctor, but also welcoming anyone else from the local community. We can’t wait to get started!

20 YEARS CELEBRATING LOCAL MUSICAL TALENT! On Saturday 7th March the Rotary Club of Castle Donington will run its annual music festival for a landmark twentieth year in succession. The festival celebrates the talent of local young musicians and runs from 10am till late at the Methodist Church in Castle Donington.

The event is a professionally judged competition for children of school age in Castle Donington and surrounding areas. It’s a great opportunity for youngsters with musical talent to showcase their ability and, in particular, to boost and develop their self-confidence. Several winners of the festival in previous years have now launched successful careers in the music and broadcasting industries.

The competition is split into three main sections run during the day from 10am to 4pm – these are for school years 1-6, 7-9 and 10-13. Each solo participant performs one or two pieces on the instrument of their choice – this might be a vocal. Duets and ensembles can also enter.

Those lucky enough to be selected from each

section move into the gala evening concert, held from 7pm, to compete for the prizes of Overall Winner and the Oliver Walton Most Promising Musician.

Head along on the 7th to show your support for these amazingly talented musicians whilst enjoying the high quality performances past festivals have shown to be expected. It’s not to be missed.

PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

LOCKINGTON & HEMINGTON PARISH COUNCIL UPDATE Planning Proposals St Modwen - We continue to challenge this proposed development with Council officers.

Community Pavilion - We have been advised we have addressed all planning concerns with the revised design and a final decision on planning approval from NWLeics District Council is imminent.

Community Speedwatch A large number of signatures have been received towards the requirement of 20% of villagers in order to progress with this scheme. Volunteers to be trained on speed guns are still being sought.

Dog Fouling Concerns have been raised about an increased level of dog owners not clearing up after their pets.

Enforcement officers have been patrolling the area of Church St Lockington with a view to issue fixed penalties and an increased number of bins have been installed. Whilst the majority of local dog owners are responsible can we please remind you to ‘ bag it and bin it’.

General Improvements Work will start soon on re-landscaping of Hemington Memorial following approval of the plans which will be shared on the Parish Council website.

As we reported last month, a road narrowing/Single Lane sign has been requested for the new road coming into Lockington. The lack of progress on the signage, following further reported near misses around the passing places, has been escalated.

Our next meeting will be held at 6.30pm on Wednesday 11th March in Lockington Village Hall.
