During this current situation regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, Kornerstone Legal Services are fully committed to ensuring all customers can still access our usual services as normal.

Protecting Your Family Inheritance

Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually.

But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT).

A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life.

As the surviving partner does not own the deceased’s share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children’s inheritance is protected. This last point can be particular interest to couples who have come together and have children with different partners.

A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensuring that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property, they can still sell the property and the proceeds to be purchase a new property, the terms of professional the Trust remain The trueused wayto in providing an affordable over the new property.

This last month has, without doubt, been a whirlwind for all of us. I, for one, felt wholly unprepared for the massive changes we have seen to our day to day lives and the impact it has on our physical and mental health can be overwhelming.

I did question whether to produce a May issue with no means of printing or delivering but then I saw the community pulling together to support each other, the small business owners fighting for survival and most importantly people’s resolution to look forward and remain hopeful.

YOUR WELLBEING

WORLD INTERRUPTED! We are all adjusting to new ways of living with the coronavirus pandemic. Looking after our emotional and mental wellbeing is more important than ever, so rather than focus on what we have lost - what could we do instead, how can we use this time as an opportunity?

Many of us are spending more time at home, adjusting to a new rhythm of life. Create daily routines that prioritise looking after yourself. Eat well, rest and exercise, but find time to try something new or return to a past interest. If you’re a keyworker, or live with a keyworker, remember they don’t have the luxury of time, be especially thoughtful and supportive as they stay at work to keep us safe.

Social distancing doesn’t mean we can’t stay in touch with friends and family as we become familiar with new remote forms of communication! Who knew we would be teaching Grandma to zoom? Scheduling virtual coffee time with friends and family can often mean we speak to them more.

Avoid unhelpful thinking or catastrophising.

The media is awash with speculation, fear, blame and advice. Limit your news binge to reputable sources, perhaps only checking in once a day.

Children are suddenly exposed to a global emergency that has consequences way beyond this pandemic. Talk to them about the virus, be honest but mindful that they may be scared and worried too, missing friends and school life.

This is part of your child’s history, make it memorable for the right reasons. Make it fun, give them space to connect with friends but be 12

flexible with rules and boundaries; now is the time to choose your battles wisely! The social and emotional wellbeing of your child is just as important as learning at this time and without a feeling of calm and safety learning won’t happen.

Expect to feel overwhelmed at times; especially if you have a pre-existing mental or physical health concern. Be kind to yourself, be prepared to reach out for support, ask friends and family to stay in touch and check in on you regularly. Make a list of people you can call and have emergency/ support numbers to hand.

It’s true that we are all in this together, but that doesn’t mean the impact will be the same for everyone. Try not to judge others too harshly, we really have no idea what another person is battling. Let’s hope we can learn from our experiences; live with new perspectives, knowledge, understanding and an appreciation of what and who are truly important.

the help of Castle Donington Volunteer Centre and aims to support anybody locally who needs assistance. This could be help collecting prescriptions, food shopping or simply a friendly chat for those feeling lonely.

LOWDOWN IN LOCKDOWN Hey guys, it’s Marcus from Fitness Republic with your lowdown in lockdown! I’m sure by now you’re fed up with the current situation and want life to be back to normal, trust me - I do too! Here are my tips on keeping positive right now….

First things first, you cannot change the current situation so we have to make the most of it.

How? Think long and hard if you had all the time in the world what would you do? Learn a new skill? Get all those jobs done round the house you don’t have time for? Spend quality time with close family? You will probably never have this much free time again so my suggestion is to use it wisely!

Get into a routine - now more than ever it’s too easy to stay in bed watching Netflix and without work you may struggle with a reason or the motivation to get out of bed, so make a list of things to do the next day. It doesn’t have to be long or exciting just give yourself something to do each day and get into a routine.

Now here’s the big one - Stay Active!

Keeping active whilst in quarantine should be one of your main priorities. You’ve probably seen all over the news that exercise is so important at

this time, and in fact it has been reported how exercise has a profound effect on your immune system. The effect it has on your mental wellbeing is now more important than ever. With limited equipment and your normal training schedule thrown out the window it could be easy to get demoralised.

However, any form of stimulus to a muscle will help retain what you have built over time, so get training, get creative! Body weight exercises, the odd kettle bell, dumbbell, resistance band, water bottle, plant pot, whatever you have anything is better than nothing.

With our members here at Fitness Republic we have designed a full online class timetable of over 30 live classes per week to keep you going so you don’t miss a beat! Lots of HIIT, Pilates, Yoga, Zumba and Abs classes! Hopefully this gives you some ideas and motivation to keep going through this challenging time! IN YOUR GARDEN

INSPIRATION FOR LOCKDOWN GARDENING At the time of writing the country is in lockdown.

Fortunately, we have been blessed with unusually warm weather and sunshine. Those of you with a garden or any outside space can really benefit from extra time at home. I have simple maintenance and creative suggestions to spruce up your garden, keep you busy and feeling happy.

First, a very easy thing to hugely improve your garden is to neaten up edges. You will be amazed at how transformative re-edging a lawn or border with a sharpened edging spade is. A crisp divide between grass and planting beds or grass and paving makes all the difference.

If you go a step further you can create a bigger or new border into the lawn space. Measure and mark it out first before cutting into the grass. Set out with a rigid straight edge or, a piece of hose pipe for a more organic shape. My tip is to look at the marked out space from an upstairs windows to check that the proportions and any sweeps or angles are the right size.

Make a neat edge by cutting into the grass and then lift out the unwanted turf in manageable spade size pieces. Dig the soil below and add some compost or top soil. In the weeks following keep those edges trimmed with garden edging shears. If in tiding or reshaping these edges you have created a bit more planting space then check out below the online links for plants.

Do spruce up your garden furniture. Wash it down, paint it, fix it, and even make some cushions. Garden

furniture is an investment and good maintenance will make it last longer. To smarten up old wooden furniture I suggest clean it with Net-Trol. Then when it is dried, sand the furniture down and apply wood oil.

Deks Olje Di’ is highly recommended wood oil which soaks into the wood and stabilises it, increasing longevity. Most of the garden furniture retailers are open online and are delivering if you want to splash out on new. I suggest you check sizes first and measure out the pieces of furniture in the space you plan for them.

Of course, it is the time of year to plant up your pots, window boxes and hanging baskets. Colour coordinate flowers and foliage with your paintwork or other things in the garden. Have a theme of colour and repeat it around the garden to give a unified rhythm to your planting.

For endless flowers and easy to look after plants I don’t think you can go far wrong with Geraniums or Imaptients (Bizzy Lizzies). Alternatively, for your own home-grown feast, cherry tomatoes (particularly varieties ‘Tumbling Tom’ or ‘Gartenperle’) in hanging baskets are a winner, and strawberries in tubs are a favourite of mine.

CELEBRATE VE DAY AT HOME

When VE Day dawns on Friday 8th May it will be 75 years since the guns fell silent at the end of the war in Europe.

Years of carnage and destruction had come to an end and millions of people took to the streets and pubs to celebrate peace, mourn their loved ones and to hope for the future.

Celebrations to commemorate the 75th anniversary had been planned across the UK with an official bank holiday and a long weekend of street parties due to take place. Unfortunately, these events have now had to be postponed as we face the current restrictions of social distancing and lockdown.

The Stay at Home Street Party campaign is encouraging people across the country to instead decorate their houses in red, white and blue and have a picnic in their front garden to celebrate.

We all need a party and a reason to celebrate right now so get your neighbours and the whole street involved and mark the day at home with your very own VE Day celebrations.

It’s a great project to give the kids - make your own bunting or union jack flags, bake cakes, cupcakes and host a real English picnic with sandwiches and scones.

The Royal British Legion is also calling for people to help commemorate the anniversary by joining in with a UK-wide rendition of Dame Vera Lynn’s ‘We’ll Meet Again’ at 9pm on VE day. BBC One will be featuring the singalong as part of their VE Day broadcast.
