But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees.

LOCAL COMMUNITY NEWS

AN INTRODUCTION TO GrowCookShare is an initiative founded five years ago. We grow crops on our allotments which our volunteers plant, tend and harvest that we then cook and share with local residents. We also have the support of local businesses, especially at harvest time, who generously donate their time to collect and prepare produce for storage and freezing for later use.

We hold two events each month, one at St Edwards Church Hall for sixty invited guests and another for twenty five at the Wakefield Court sheltered complex at which we prepare and serve a full 3 course meal. Conversation and social contact are important with both functions being well attended.

As required we provide transport to and from the meal using our accessible minibuses.

this was taken at our last Christmas lunch, time flies as we are about to repeat what is one of our busiest events of the year.

CHRISTMAS: WHAT ARE THE DANGERS FOR PETS? The biggest cause of poorly pets over the festive season is sometimes our own fault. We want to treat our beloved pets as part of the family during the festivities including giving them a taste of our own Christmas indulgences that they are not used to.

Things that are very toxic to dogs: Chocolate – contains a toxic ingredient called theobromine. Dark chocolate contains the highest level of this substance.

Raisins – in mince pies, Christmas pudding and fruit cake. These are very toxic and can cause kidney failure in some dogs. Not all dogs will be sensitive but unfortunately there is no way of knowing which will be affected.

The golden rule is – if in doubt; give your veterinary practice a shout!

Things that are very toxic to cats: Lilies – Make sure they are out of the way of our feline friends who are extremely susceptible to kidney failure from ingestion of any part of this plant. Even licking their fur having rubbed against the plant can cause a problem.

Christmas Message Christmas is a time of excitement and anticipation. A time when we catch up with family and friends. A time to celebrate and, if you love carols, to sing!

Yet, we can get so caught up in the buying, the decorating, the fun and (frankly) the frenzy that we can, if we’re not careful, forget what it is all about.

At Christmas we celebrate the birth of Jesus, God’s gift to the world. A gift which reminds us that the real meaning to life lies in the depth and quality of our relationships. A gift that reminds us that we are loved and loveable.

It’s also easy to forget that for some, Christmas may not be a happy time. Too many in our society don’t have enough to eat, or anywhere to call home. And many people are on their own. Christmas can be a time when we are reminded that some are no longer with us, and we can feel very alone.

Wherever you are on life’s journey, remember that the promise of Christmas is that God is with us. And my prayer is that you may find a moment to stop…. and when you do, to think about God’s gift of love to you, and the gift that you are, or could be, to others.

And if you have an opportunity to come to one of the many Christmas services on offer, that would be great too.

PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

LOCKINGTON & HEMINGTON PARISH COUNCIL UPDATE The Christmas Lights switch on will be at 6.30pm on Saturday 7th December at the Hemington Memorial. This will be followed with mince pies at the Jolly Sailor.

The Parish Councillors would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Village Improvements Improvements to the village are ongoing and to date include the addition of new planters to complement the five new village signs (we are awaiting a quote to plant them up with Spring bedding), new cyclist and horse-riding signs in both villages and the distribution of 30mph dustbin stickers.

Work is underway for further improvements such as new benches, one in each village, a new 30mph flashing sign and a new village hall sign which has been ordered. Finally, agreement has been received to commence work on the Hemington Memorial garden.

Village Hall Planning is ongoing towards the refurbishment of the village hall in 2020. Efforts to raise grants/funds from

various sources have started along with clarification from NW Leicestershire Development Department as to permitted development within the Lockington Conservation Area.

The Hall is well used by the surrounding communities but, we are hopeful that additional activities may be incorporated to attract other people of various ages and interests. The volunteer Trustees would welcome suggestions as to such expanded usage and will hold an open meeting at a future date (tbc) to outline their plans and seek community support.
