It will be so good to see the return of hugely popular events such as Melbourne Fete & Carnival on Saturday 9th July, the Ashby Show at Cattows Farm in Heather on Sunday 10th July and Splendour Festival at Wollaton Hall in Nottingham on 23rd and 24th July.

Home exercise for older adults For those wanting to work out in the comfort of their own home, there are many ways to do this often with minimal equipment or without any at all. Household objects such as tins of beans or full milk cartons can be used to add resistance to workouts for example.

The NHS website has some great links to home based activity.

Video sites such as Youtube also have an abundance of virtual exercise sessions which may be of use.

Below I am going to go over some simple exercises that can be done at home to increase strength, balance and independence: Sit to Stand A very simple exercise that just requires a chair.

The aim of this exercise is to start seated and raise to standing and then lower back down to seated in a controlled manner. This should be then repeated up to 10 times. This exercise will strengthen the lower body specifically the quadriceps which are the large muscles at the front of the legs.

Calf Raise Using a sturdy surface for support the aim is to raise up on to the toes and then slowly lower back to the floor in a controlled manner. This is then repeated up to 15 times. This exercise will help to strengthen the calf muscles.

Wall Press Ups Place hands at chest level against a wall. Keep the back straight and bend the elbows so the body moves towards the wall. Then slowly return back to the start position. Aim for 10 repetitions.

This exercise will strengthen the chest, shoulders and back of the arms.

and then slowly lower the weights back to the start position. This exercise will strengthen the front of the arms. Repeat 10 times.

Heel To Toe Walk This is a simple exercise which can help to improve balance. The aim is to stand upright and put one foot in front of the other, then the other foot and gradually take steps forward in a slow controlled manner. Keep eyes fixed forward throughout and ensure there is support available when performing any balance exercise.

Step Ups This exercise strengthens the muscles in the lower body and also helps improve balance.

Ensure there is support available when doing this exercise. Simply place one foot on a step, then follow with the other. Then step down and repeat 10 times.

Castle Donington Public Access Defribillators What are Public Access Defibrillators? They are life-saving pieces of equipment that are safe and easy to use by anyone.

There are seven Public Access Defibrillators in Castle Donington, all available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and they can be used effectively by anyone without any training whatsoever. However, a little knowledge is never a bad thing and, for that reason, Castle Donington Community First Responders are offering an informal awareness and training evening to anyone who would like to know more.

You may not know where they are, how to gain access to them or what they’re for, but the team will explain and demonstrate everything so that should the unthinkable happen, you’ll be a little more confident.

As good as defibrillators are, they need the help of the user in the form of C.P.R. which is easy to learn, and we will show you how to do that too.

The session will take place on Tuesday 2nd August at The Community Hub, Castle Donington at 7pm.

So why not come along and see what it’s all about? You will be very welcome and you will leave feeling more confident to act in a lifethreatening emergency.

Ashby Big Weekend Ashby Big Weekend is making its debut on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th August.

The event organised by Ashby Town Council in conjunction with Radar Event Services & Kangaroo UK will incorporate Ashby’s newest event from 2021, Ashby Proms in the Park and a long running event for Ashby, REALfest.

Two days packed full of great entertainment are planned, all on Ashby Bath Grounds. The line-up for Saturday begins with a street dance performance from Expressions Street Dance

Troupe followed by local bands W3 and Big Mog & the Alley Cats, leading into Meat Loaf and Kings of Leon tribute acts. To end the day on a high a screening of Grease the Singalong Musical will start at 8.30pm. Whether you come as a T-Bird or one of the Pink Ladies be sure to dress up ready for your singalong – there’s even a prize for the best group fancy dress!

From 12noon through to 6pm, you can also browse the many local craft stalls at the artisan market running and keep the kids happy with a whole host of children’s arts, crafts and entertainment.

Sunday’s Proms in the Park live entertainment kicks off at 5pm and promises to be a much more relaxed event. From 1940s swing with Sophie Dangerfield to soul and Motown hits with Madison Avenue UK and classics from the 14 to 16 piece swing orchestra that is Ashby Big Band you know you’ll have a toe tapping time. Sunday’s finale will see the best-selling female group The D-Day Darlings joined on stage by The D-Day Juniors!

Question Time with FISHERS SOLICITORS Do you need a settlement agreement?

We’ve seen a lot of change in the job market over the past couple of years. Employees have been increasingly willing to leave a job behind if they’re unhappy and we’ve all had to adapt to new ways of working. If a dispute has arisen in your workplace, a settlement agreement could be the best way forward.

What’s a settlement agreement?

A settlement agreement is a legally binding document that’s created to end a dispute between employer and employee without the need to go to an employment tribunal. They’re often used when an employee is leaving work, but they can also be useful when there’s another kind of dispute.

How do we agree on terms?

The terms of your agreement need to be agreed upon between employer and employee. This could be a simple process. If your employment is ending your employer could make you a financial settlement offer. If you accept it the settlement agreement will set out what you’ve agreed. However, it can be more complicated than that.

settlement, the agreement needs to confirm how much is being paid, whether it’s being paid in instalments and whether any tax needs to be deducted.

Equally, you don’t have to have a financial settlement. The agreement might have been needed because of something that needed to change for you to stay in your job. There might also be other parts of a financial agreement that aren’t about money, for example giving you a reference so you can get a new job.

Do I need a solicitor?

There are various statutory requirements about the terms that must be in a settlement agreement. It’s important to have the agreement checked by a solicitor to make sure it meets all those requirements. If you’re an employee you must have legal advice otherwise the agreement won’t be legally binding. Your employer is also legally required to contribute to your independent professional advice from a solicitor.

The settlement agreement document will need to set out what the dispute was and what you’ve agreed. Sometimes, a settlement agreement can be offered by an employer if they’ve come across something that could lead to a tribunal claim in the future.

As an employer, it’s also a good idea to get your own legal advice to make sure you’ve covered everything. The tax rules around settlement agreements can be complex. You may also want to discuss the possibility of a claim going to the employment tribunal and what the outcome of that might be when you’re deciding what offer to make.

Beacon Hill in Charnwood is the starting point of the National Forest Trek, now in its second year and taking place from Friday 9th to Sunday 11th September along the 75-mile National Forest Way. The route reveals the best the National Forest has to offer across a wide variety of landscapes. You’ll explore areas you might know and plenty of hidden gems along the way too. You’ll pass through the almost primeval ancient landscapes of Charnwood with its rocky outcrops, rolling hills and parkland, take in iconic views and visit some of the best wildlife spots in the region. The trek will take you through to places steeped in fascinating industrial heritage across the heart of the Forest, showcasing the extraordinary landscape transformation that’s taken place over the last three decades, where open cast mining has been replaced by newly planted woodland, thriving wetlands and colourful wildflower meadows. Finally, with the end nearly in sight, you’ll take in the pretty villages of Needwood before an atmospheric and emotive finish at the

striking National Memorial Arboretum, a place of reflection and remembrance.

The National Forest Trek will be an exhilarating way to challenge yourself this year – training over the summer, then undertaking one, two or the whole three-day adventure in the company of your friends, family or colleagues. You’ll have a lot of fun enroute, and you can use the experience to raise funds for a cause that’s important to you if you wish. The whole weekend is supported: everything is taken care of, with great food, drink and snacks provided throughout, options to camp along the way with transfers for both you and your luggage should you chose to walk the entire route. We’re not saying it will be easy but imagine the thrill as you soak up the wonderful atmosphere, spurred on by your fellow trekkers and our supportive team.

The Renters Reform Bill – what it means The property market made the headlines last month with the much talked about Renters Reform Bill being published. The housing secretary Michael Gove promised that this would be the ‘biggest shake-up of the rented sector for 30 years’. The bill, which aims to give more power to tenants alongside reducing the number of ‘rogue’ landlords offering unsuitable properties to the rental market, is set to divide opinion throughout the property sector.

At Martin&Co, we believe in fairness for tenants when renting their homes, whilst also understanding that the housing market relies on private investment from landlords. The professional body; Propertymark have said that the “private rental market is already under huge strain with renters outstripping available properties and we need to be able to attract new investment. If Ministers really do want to create a ‘fairer private rented sector’, they must work to ensure these reforms are carefully balanced and any interventions to achieve short-term objectives do not constrain the market in the longer term.”

The headlines of the bill, published on the Government website are below: • The new blueprint for renters reform will end the injustice of unfit homes and help protect

renters from the rising cost of living • It will ban section 21 ‘no-fault’ evictions and extend the Decent Homes Standard to the sector • It will end arbitrary rent review clauses, give tenants stronger powers to challenge poor practice, unjustified rent increases and enable them to be repaid rent for non-decent homes • It will be illegal for landlords or agents to have blanket bans on renting to families with children or those in receipt of benefits • It will make it easier for tenants to share their homes with much-loved pets As this will mean a number of changes to the way landlords manage their buy-to-lets and wider portfolios, our Managing Director David has said that “if a landlord has any concern over the future of their investments, we would be more than happy to offer our advice and services to ensure their investment is secure, their tenant is happy and above all the property and tenancy are legally compliant within the new regulations.”

The National Trust

Outdoor Summer Fun at Calke With summer holidays fast approaching, now is the time to get outdoors and explore all Calke has to offer. You can sightsee Calke by two wheels every day from Monday 18th July or at weekends beforehand, from 10am to 4.30pm. We encourage all riders to enjoy a leisurely cycle along the Tramway Trail on a bright summer’s day and soak up the view from the comfort of your own saddle.

If you prefer to drink in the atmosphere of summer on foot, Calke has a variety of walks to keep you in touch with nature or provide an enjoyable adventure for the family dog. Dogs are welcome to enjoy all areas of the parkland, gardens and stableyards.

They can also join you on park guide tours, excluding the Deer Park, and garden tours provided they are on-lead.

Water Safety With temperatures set to rocket we expect to see a rise in water related incidents. We have a specialist water rescue team at Castle Donington and over the last year have witnessed too many incidents with fatal consequences. Rivers, lakes and canals all look inviting on sunny days, but we urge you to swim only in places that are supervised such as a swimming pool, or a beach with a lifeguard on duty.

• Pay attention to warning notices – if it says no swimming don’t swim.

• At the beach – if there is a lifeguard only swim if it is safe and between the flags.

• Always watch children in or around water.

• Beware of currents – water may look calm but undercurrents, riptides etc. could pull you under.

• Cold water shock – the surface may feel warm, but below can be icy cold, numbing limbs.

• Never dive or tombstone – below the water

surface maybe hazards such as rocks, pollution or things to get tangled up in.

• Swimming competence – even a strong pool swimmer is not prepared for conditions in open water.

• Alcohol and swimming don’t mix – stay out of the water if you have been drinking.

The humble bumblebee (and friends) Why we all need to make a beeline to our buzzing friends, who are pivotal to the future of our planet.

The bee population (bumblebees and the 25,000 other recorded species that exist), have been too regularly dismissed in the past as simply the overseers of pollination… and of course useful if you want to spread a bit of honey on your toast.

Yet the reliance both we and the wider environment have on bees moves them straight to the upper echelons of some of the planet’s most valuable entities.

Consider that at least 30% of the world’s crops and 90% of all plants require cross-pollination to spread and thrive, and suddenly our perception of bees takes a different slant.

Unfortunately, bee populations around the world are in decline. Climate change causes some flowers to bloom earlier or later than usual, meaning bees have fewer food sources at the start of the season. They suffer habitat loss from development and a lack of bee-friendly flowers, and some colonies collapse due to plants and seeds treated with pesticides.

The good news is that protecting these little wonders is not just good for the environment, but a joy in itself. Several organisations run bee initiatives; from Bee Walks, in which volunteers traverse set routes to map out observations of bee activity; to community and education groups at libraries, stalls and fetes that raise money and awareness.

You can also create a buzz in your own back garden, by laying a foundation to encourage bees into the space, where what’s around them will thrive: Bee-friendly plants Use bee-friendly plants, patio pots, herbs in a planter, with hanging baskets and crocuses creating colour and helping bees flourish.

Gracious greens Consider adding fruit and veg to your garden, where possible; bees will be instantly attracted.

An annual affair Try to keep planting throughout the season in order to provide food and shelter for bees. They actually require nectar and pollen across all four seasons, while keeping the grass long offers great refuge.

Arrest the pesticides Obviously, removing or greatly reducing the use of pesticides in your garden will have a hugely beneficial effect on the bee population, so don’t be afraid to throw away that ‘bug gun’ and let nature do its bit.

New arrivals Also consider welcoming in ‘beneficial insects’ such as hoverflies, beetles and ladybirds, as these perfect partners will all help your bees flourish.

In Your Garden

Tiny gardens can bear fruit Did you know that a large tub can support a small shrub and even a small tree which is on a dwarf rootstock? This means you can potentially have fruit trees close to your kitchen door even if your garden is paved.

A patio fruit tree is a great way of having a productive tree in a small space. I suggest a pot of no less than 50cm in diameter. You may get less fruit than a tree planted in open ground and the life span may be limited to 10 years, but even so it is worth doing. Fruit trees in pots must be regularly watered as rainfall will not be enough.

For pears and apples to pollinate there needs to be two types of cultivars. Good genetically dwarf apple varieties include Maloni Billy, Maloni Lilly, Maloni Sally and Garden Red, all of which are dessert apples. For small root stock apples varieties include Fiesta, Greensleeves, Kidds Orange Red and Sunset which are dessert apples and ‘Arthur Turner’ Howgate Wonder and Lane’s Prince Albert, which are cookers. As for pears, a good one is ‘Garden Pearl’ and a patio

Similarly, there are genetically dwarf and grafted cherries, plums and gages available. Slightly less common fruit trees such as peaches, apricots and nectarines when grown in pots can easily be covered in winter, helping to protect them from the cold and reducing the chance of fungal diseases setting in. The best fruiting tree for a pot is a fig, and the restricted root growth actually helps the production of figs.

In terms of compost, use a John Innes No 3 and make sure the pot has holes for drainage and some broken crocks or stones in the bottom to aid drainage. Tubs will need regular watering, and fertiliser a couple of times a year will help your plants, and every three years or so re-potting will be necessary.

Parish Council News

Lockington & Hemington Parish Council Parish Council meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month starting at 6:30pm at Lockington Village Hall. All are invited to attend. Any issues can be raised through the clerk on 01332 818 980 or by emailing clerk@hemlock.org.uk Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee The Parish Council and Village School PTFA arranged the street party for the Queens Jubilee on the afternoon of Saturday 4th June in conjunction with The Jolly Sailor. Many thanks to all those that made it possible with committed organisation beforehand. It was well attended, and we hope it was enjoyed by all.

Thanks to all that participated in the re-arranged village litter pick ahead of the Jubilee weekend, along with bunting displays throughout the village, it really added to the occasion.

Village Improvements The Community Speedwatch campaign that was being organised in both villages ahead of the Covid lockdowns is being re-established for this summer. Anyone wishing to take part in monitoring/speed gun controls etc is asked to register interest through contacting cllredward.nudd@hemlock.org.uk Environment Agency work to Lockington Brook and New Delight Corner in Hemington is still planned, although significant delays have been

encountered. The actual dates are to be advised.

Internal work within the Village Hall has mainly completed. Some final pieces of the project are soon to be finalised and grants and quotes are being sought for the outside area.

Work is being arranged through Leicestershire County Council to maintain trees within the two village play areas. This work will be planned in and any road or play area closures advised.

Sports Pavilion A lot of activity is on-going to move this project forward to an acceptable conclusion. Funding is still being received although actual costs remain high. Discussions with sports teams and contractors continues. Improved fencing of the site and access for villagers is being organised.

Planning The St Modwen appeal for development at the A50 roundabout is underway. The Parish Council are working with Castle Donington Parish Council and independent advisors to continue our case against the application. The closing date for input is July 15th and the Parish Council will provide guidance in due course on how to raise your objections most effectively.

The Neighbourhood Plan Theme Groups looking into Housing/Environment and Sustainability continue. These Groups will be in place for around 6 months before submitting the final plan to NW Leicestershire District Council. The draft plan will be shared with all villagers ahead of submission.

NW Leicestershire District Council have launched a consultation for the updating of the ‘Local Plan’. The Chair of the Parish Council continues to represent the parish along with engaging with neighbouring parishes.
