Treasuring the New Year As we coil up the twinkly lights, pack away the baubles and carefully store the Christmas decorations for another year, we might expect to be feeling a little blue and without much sparkle around the Calke estate. This year however, throughout January, the cheer continues as we celebrate the year of ‘125 Treasures’ with a brand-new exhibition in the Riding School.

With more than one million objects at over 200 historic places, the National Trust looks after one of the world’s most significant collections of heritage objects and fine art. ‘125 Treasures’ is a new book that brings together a selection of special items within the collection. Calke is very lucky to be home to one of these treasures, the magnificent state bed. The engaging exhibition will allow visitors to discover more about how Calke cares for its treasures and explore what it is that makes a treasure.

The new year is also a fantastic opportunity to take a calm moment and catch our breath after

a busy festive period. There is no better way to create space and clarity in our minds than going for a walk in the fresh air. We have created a series of winter walks for visitors, sharing our favourite routes to take in the highlights of the season, which can be viewed on the ‘what’s on’ section of the Calke website.

In addition to wintry walks, from Tuesday 4th January Calke will be inviting families to step into the wonderful world of Percy the Park Keeper.

In association with the best-selling author and illustrator Nick Butterworth the Percy the Park Keeper winter wander will introduce children and their families to the busy park keeper and his animal friends. The self-led trail will encourage families to join Percy’s team as he races to get Calke and the animals that call it home ready for the colder months.

The cold might be here to stay for a little while, but there’s still plenty to keep our spirits high as we enter the New Year.

Happy New Year!

We hope that a happy and well deserved break was had by all.

The run into the year end was busy with our volunteers supporting essential seasonal shopping trips, Christmas meals, Hub events, markets and the vaccination day to name a few. Additionally, the demand for Medical Car transport has been constantly high and is anticipated to remain so.

The impact of the new Covid variant is being closely watched and our activities will be tailored to ensure that we take all precautions. As this piece is being written we are hearing of the debate in parliament of further restrictions to control the spread of the Omicron variant, a further challenge for us all which no one welcomes.

This has not stopped us from planning a number of special outings for 2022 within an hour or so distance of Castle Donington. We hope that these will proceed and we will be able to communicate details soon.

The National Forest

Get active in the Forest this new year

With the excitement and festivities of Christmas over for another year, what better way to start 2022 than by making the most of what the outdoors can offer us? Freedom, fresh air, a place to be active or a place to relax, slow down or even reconnect with old traditions. What will you discover this new year?

With hundreds of miles of trails, the National Forest is the perfect place to head out for a stroll and experience the Forest in all its winter glory.

There’s nothing better than the crunch of frosty leaves under foot, the freshness of the crisp air, the bursts of red berries on bare branches and hearing the cheerful song of a robin. Of course, you don’t just have to walk the trails, they’re perfect for cycling and running too!

The young woodlands of the National Forest are also inspiring a revival of the old traditions.

Wassailing is the annual tradition which involves the blessing of orchards to guarantee a good harvest for the year ahead. The celebrations involve a procession down to the orchard followed by singing, dancing and the clattering of pots and pans to ward off evil spirits, whilst cider is poured into the roots of the oldest tree. Of course, no wassail would be complete without a taste of the wassail drink. If you fancy fending off evil spirits in the Forest this year, why not join the Donington Orchard wassail on Saturday 15th

January or Overseal Orchard Croft wassail on Saturday 29th January? Both orchards were part funded by the National Forest Company as part of the wider creation of the National Forest.

If you’re looking for something a bit gentler and a chance to unwind after the busy festive season, woodlands are the perfect places to relax and practice mindfulness and forest bathing. Find a peaceful spot to sit and start to focus on the natural world around you. At this time of year, you might hear woodpeckers drumming, see flocks of finches and redwings feeding on winter berries, and at dusk listen out for the famous hoots of the tawny owl.

We hope the Forest inspires and motivates you to make the most of the outdoors this year and provides a space for you to take some time for your health and wellbeing this new year.

Smoke Alarm Safety A Happy New Year to one and all from the team at Castle Donington Fire Station. With resolutions on everyone’s minds please make sure you think about smoke alarms as well as gym memberships.

To help keep you and your loved ones safe, follow these smoke alarm safety top tips: • Install at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home.

• Fit your smoke alarms in the right place. The ideal position is on the ceiling, in the middle of a room or on a hallway or landing.

• Consider fitting additional alarms in other rooms where there are electrical appliances and near sleeping areas.

• Don’t put alarms in or near kitchens and bathrooms where smoke or steam can set them off by accident.

• Test your smoke alarm weekly. It only takes a few seconds and it could save a life.

• Once a year – change the battery in the alarm (unless it is a 10-year alarm).

• Twice a year – gently vacuum over the slots to remove dust.

• Every ten years – replace the entire smoke alarm.

Even if hardwired, they usually have a 10 year lifespan.

New Year’s resolutions for your Pets When making our New Year’s resolutions it’s good to also consider some for our pets!

Obesity is one of the leading causes of disease in our pets, it can lead to: • Heart and breathing problems - fat builds up around the airways and chest, which can increase blood pressure and make breathing more difficult.

• Diabetes – the body can become resistant to the effects of the insulin, making it difficult to regulate blood glucose levels.

• Joint disease – excess weight puts stress on joints and can lead to painful conditions such as osteoarthritis.

However, reversing our pets’ weight can reverse most of these risks. A dog or cat at a healthy weight is more likely to enjoy a long and happy life! Make a resolution to always weigh out their food, taking into consideration an occasional treat.

Regular exercise ensures that their muscles remain strong and supple. Exercise and play are also good to keep your pets entertained and stop them from becoming bored and frustrated.

Seeking out value When it comes to buying wine there’s a lot of misinformation out there, and one of the most common misconceptions is that simply spending a lot of money on a bottle means you will like it. However, it might not be your style, it might be overpriced, or you could be drinking it for completely the wrong occasion.

With prices likely to be rising how can we sniff out the best value when it comes to buying a bottle?

Learn what you like Do you know what wine you like? Getting value for your money when it comes to wine involves at least a bit of legwork on your part – noting down which grapes, regions and styles you prefer, and progressing from there towards specific producers and vintages. In the long run, you won’t buy wine you don’t like.

Find someone you can talk to With all its quirks and specialist insights, building up a comprehensive knowledge of wine can take years. If you can find a wine merchant you trust, your job will become a lot easier, as they will come up with suggestions based on your preferences and price range.

Buck the trends There is often value to be found in regions with a dodgy reputation. Beaujolais used to be known chiefly for its youthful plonk, but in recent years it has been making wines that rival those from nearby Burgundy, with the added benefit that you don’t need to remortgage your house to enjoy them. Beaujolais cru is one of France’s most underappreciated wines as is a good Muscadet.

Also there is a lot more to Spain than just Rioja and more to Italy than Chianti or Barolo.

Spend a little more Rarely will you find good wine at the very cheapest price points. It is suggested that the £7-a-bottle price point is where you start seeing real value. Anything below that and you’re paying for the bottle, the labelling, the shipping, the duty, the VAT … if you’re lucky, there’s a few pennies left for the actual liquid.

Special offers Special offers might make your wine cheap, but will they provide more value? Not always.

It devalues the wine, because if a bottle of New Zealand sauvignon was £10 and now is suddenly £5, then was it ever really worth £10? The odd saving here and there is one thing but beware of huge 50% off or 2 for 1 deals.

Mary Berry’s Raspberry and Apple Muffins We are lucky to live in a consumer and retail world where fruit and vegetables of every description are available to us all year round, no matter what season we are in.

That means the old rules about using summer fruits in summer months have changed somewhat; so to celebrate this I’d like to bring out a traditionally seasonal recipe – raspberry and apple muffins – in these wintry times where we would, in the past, have had rather flatter, more rustic flavours.

This bake is easy to do, really delicious, and is certain to put a smile on the faces of old and young alike.

Top Tips In order to make a light mixture, stir the wet ingredients into the dry ones quickly, gently, and briefly. Stop stirring as soon as they are combined. The mixture should feel light and soft. Don’t over-mix, as this will result in a tough consistency.

Also, stir fruit through only three or four times, so it retains its consistency and doesn’t disintegrate.

In the case of the raspberries, stir only once.

Method 1 Preheat the oven to 200°C (180°C fan / gas mark 6). Line each hollow of the muffin tin with a paper muffin case. Warm the butter in a small pan over a low heat until it melts, then set aside to cool.

2 Tip the flour, baking powder, ground almonds, cinnamon and sugar into a large bowl and stir to combine. In a medium bowl, beat the eggs and stir in the yogurt, milk and cooled melted butter. Stir this mixture into the flour mixture, then add the raspberries and apple and stir briefly.

3 Spoon the mixture into the muffin cases. Bake for about 25 minutes or until well risen and firm to the touch.

4 Meanwhile, make the glaze: warm the sugar and orange juice in a small pan over a low heat, just until the sugar has dissolved, then increase the heat and let the mixture bubble for about 30secs so it turns a bit syrupy – not too long, or it will get too sticky.

5 Remove the muffins from the oven. Leave them in their tin for 1-2mins, then transfer them to a wire rack. While they are still warm, brush the top of each muffin with the glaze. Leave to cool.

Ingredients • 85g (3oz) butter • 250g (9oz) self-raising flour • 1 tsp baking powder • 45g (1½ oz) ground almonds • 1½ tsp ground cinnamon • 115g (4oz) caster sugar • 2 large eggs • 250g (9oz) plain, full-fat yogurt • 1 tbsp full-fat or semi-skimmed milk • 175g (6oz) fresh raspberries • 1 eating apple, such as Cox’s, about 150g (5½ oz), peeled and chopped into 1cm (½ in) pieces For the glaze • 2 tbsp caster sugar • 1 tbsp orange juice

Are you struggling to make ends meet?

Many charities like Rural Action Derbyshire are increasingly concerned about the longer-term impacts of Covid-19 on people’s health and wellbeing. The British Red Cross has been exploring people’s needs throughout the pandemic, and recently provided written evidence to the UK Government*. To summarise: • More people are struggling financially, and in some cases unable to access essentials such as food.

• More people are struggling with their mental health and loneliness, reducing their ability to cope.

• The pandemic has made inequality worse and pushed new people into hardship.

All of this is backed up by our own experiences working with voluntary groups and communities across Derbyshire during the past 18 months.

Food bank use is currently more than double the levels we experienced before the pandemic.

Many people will experience continued hardship following the removal of the benefits temporary uplift and rising costs of food and energy. Many families who were just about managing before the pandemic are now finding themselves in financial difficulty.

Living in rural Derbyshire brings additional challenges as we at Rural Action Derbyshire know only too well. It costs more to live in a rural area. People spend more of their income on essential items such as food, housing, transport and energy, meaning that often there simply isn’t enough money left at the end of the month.

5 At the moment it is very difficult to get a good energy deal, so make sure you are not wasting energy by blocking up draughts, turning off lights and switching off appliances on standby.

In Your Garden

Winter interest and flowers A garden which still holds interest and looks good at this time of the year is strangely hard to find, but it shouldn’t be. The best one I have been to is Anglesey Abbey, a National trust property in Cambridgeshire, where there is a large winter garden area open in January which is colourful, scented and structured.

A striking feature of this particular garden is a large group planting of Silver Birches. The form of Birch called Betula jacquemontii is clean, bright, white with the trunk and branches getting whiter and more striking with age. A shock of lipstick red is achieved by groups of Cornus (Dog woods) which look fantastic in the bright low winter sun. The scent comes from the pretty sugar pink flowers of Viburnham. Other plants good for winter scent which you could consider using, include the winter flowering honeysuckle with its combination of crisp white and yellow flowers and Sarcococa confusa grown as individual shrubs or hedging in shady areas. A valuable brighter burst of yellow scented flower can be achieved by growing Mahonia, which also has a strong architectural evergreen leaf.

The flowering plants mentioned here are valuable for wildlife, as the scent of the flowers encourages insects which pollinate over the winter out into the cold air. Also valuable are berries on shrubs and trees any colour from pink to yellow to red or black, which give a festive decoration and provide food for birds. All such plants are not unusual and are readily available in garden centres.

Winter interest is of course achievable in a small domestic garden. Lockington & Hemington Parish Council We wish everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year for 2022 A few things that happened in 2021 • Significant funding was received for the new sports pavilion and work started on the driveway, foundations and sports field changes.

• We continued canvassing and lobbying and with community inputs successfully had the proposed development of land off the A50 junction rejected.(Developers have until March 2022 to appeal the decision) • New planters were installed along with existing ones and re-planted regularly throughout the year.

• The Parish was registered with the Safer Streets Scheme and residents are starting to see the benefits with guidance and equipment to enhance security.

• The Neighbourhood Plan was launched with a questionnaire and open event to give the Parish a greater say in planning issues.

• Lockington Village Hall refurbishment started
