Along with the Bath Grounds Advisory Group, we will be using the results to plan potential improvements and changes to the Bath Grounds, budget constraints permitting of course.

We are in the process of applying for a renewal of our Purple Flag accreditation for excellence in managing the evening and night-time economy. We would like to know the view of anybody who uses the area between 5pm and 5am. This covers anybody who is in town during this time for shopping, visiting the bars and restaurants, using leisure facilities such as the gyms, people attending the theatre and so on. We are looking for feedback from as broad a range of users / visitors as possible. Town Council

3. The planting of more shrubs and ﬂowers.

The results have been reviewed and three key areas identiﬁed –

1. A need for additional seating such as benches.

Despite the typically wet British weather, the celebrations for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee went ahead with a fantastic day of partying on Market Street. The community pulled together to enjoy the day with picnics galore, street entertainment and even a huge conga. Ashby’s partying went viral with pictures hitting the national newspapers and even a spot on NBC in the US. There are still plenty of events to look forward to this year with the Statutes back in town from Friday 16th to Tuesday 20th September, the return of Ashby’s FABulous on Saturday 1st October and of course the Christmas Fair on Saturday 3rd December followed by the return of Ashby’s Santa Fun Run on Sunday 4th December.

Events

Recently, the Bath Grounds Advisory Group, on behalf of the Town Council, conducted a short survey regarding the Bath Grounds aimed at identifying potential improvements. We had a fantastic response with over 500 completed surveys. Thank you to everybody who took the time to share their views – we are grateful for your input.

HMRC figures released in July showed a significant increase in the number of estates paying inheritance tax in 2019-20. The Government has taken £6.1bn from annual inheritance tax receipts as more families ﬁnd themselves caught in the net recently. Shockingly, the average bill has increased to £216,000, seeing loved ones and good causes losing out on gifts left to them.

In addition to the clear beneﬁts of a watertight will, there are numerous ‘easy wins’ that allow you to avoid inheritance tax totally legally. Within certain limits, gifts during your lifetime to family, friends or charities etc, all allow you to make the best of savings open to you and offer the chance not only to save tax but put smiles on the faces of those who matter most. I think you’ll agree that beats leaving them complications and a big bill in your will. After all, you’ve worked hard enough to deserve the last word.

We are excited to say that Melbourne Festival Art & Architecture is back this month providing a showcase for professional artists and makers from Derbyshire and the East Midlands. This year 150 artists are heading for Melbourne on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th September for a weekend of great art, fantastic food, live music, classic cars and fun for all the family.

Highlights of this year’s Melbourne Festival include the sculpture in gardens, professional artists, and young artists shortlisted for the Emerging Artist Award, exhibiting at Melbourne Assembly Rooms, Creative Ukraine – a group of Ukrainian Artists now living in the East Midlands exhibiting in Creative Melbourne Gallery & Studios alongside the resident artists there.

Whilst Melbourne is a destination for food at any time; at festival time there are also street food stands catering for all tastes at Castle Farm and the Assembly Rooms, with live music at the Busk Stops at each location.

Local Events

The festival team have been organising the Art & Architecture Trail for nearly two decades and the formula of inviting professional artists to exhibit in houses, gardens and halls throughout the heart of Melbourne shows the village at its best.

The Gallery also has an exciting programme of themed exhibitions running right through to Christmas featuring the cream of Melbourne Festival artists. When the banners and bunting come down after Melbourne Festival, the next exhibition “Still Life & Wildlife” will still be open. Make sure to come along.

Local Events

Following on from some fantastic summer events in town, Saturday 1st October sees the return of the wonderful Ashby’s FABulous and this year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever.

Organised by Ashby BID and supported by Ashby Town Council, this year’s theme is ‘Fairy Tales & Fables’ so look out for the likes of Goldilocks, Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White or even the three little pigs! Shops and businesses through town, up and down Market Street and in every courtyard and mews will be decorated. Look out for the live models in the windows too. Two trophies will be awarded for the best window with one being judged by Ashby’s Mayor, Councillor John Deakin and the other by the public. Make sure to vote for your favourite.

The kids can take part in a fairy tale trail throughout town with cryptic clues along the way, prizes to be won and a free bag of sweets for every child who takes part. As they walk around, they can enjoy the street entertainment which will include stilt walkers, free face painting and a mobile balloon modeller. Stop off at the fairy tale photo stations complete with props to take a selﬁe and look out for members of Ashby’s Venture Theatre as they dress up in their best fairy tale ﬁnery and even put on a couple of short performances. The local talented artists who take part in Ashby Art’s Festival will be producing several fairy tale themed ‘face in the hole boards’ for fun family photos. Finally, if you’re looking for lunch or refreshments, many of the cafes and tea rooms will be offering themed food and drink on the day. Will you be eating the gingerbread man?

The Tollgate Brewery story began in 2005 on the old Woodville site of Brunt, Bucknall & Co, known as the Wooden Box Brewery, the ﬁrst brewery to be established in the Burton area in 1832. Woodville was formerly Wooden Box, named after the famous toll booth on the road between Ashby and Burton. The area around the Woodville roundabout (the modern equivalent of the toll booth) is still known as ‘Tollgate’ from which the brewery takes its name.

In 2012, Tollgate Brewery relocated to the National Trust Calke Abbey Estate due to a strong desire from the team at Calke Abbey and the National Trust to bring brewing back to the estate. They currently occupy one of the National Trust’s farm buildings, Southwood House Farm, built in the nineteenth century where they run a 6-barrel brewery using traditional brewing techniques that would be recognisable to those early brewers in the 1800’s. Their beers are renowned locally and if you’ve visited The Tap at No.76 on Market Street in Ashby or The Milking Parlour out at Calke Abbey estate you will, no doubt, have had a chance to sample them.

Saturday 3rd to Sunday 18th September - we are again taking part in NWLDC’s Hello Heritage event and will be offering free admission on each Saturday with opening hours extended to 3.30pm. There will also be an exhibition in our reception area about the National and Infant Schools (later Ashby Church of England Infant School) which opened in 1836 and for which the building now housing the museum and library was originally built.

Although the projected Spa Town Walk was cancelled, the Museum was delighted to welcome a group from the Thurcaston and Cropston Local History Society for a look round the exhibitions and a short town walk. We were pleased to take part again in Jim’s Tractor Day, where we had some fascinating conversations with visitors to our gazebo.

Since resistance machines teach appropriate form, and lower the risk of injury, they are generally a great tool for all types of beginners. What are the beneﬁts of resistance machines?

Resistance machines are an excellent way to master the key movement patterns involved in weight training, in a safe and regulated manner, whether you’re new to the gym or starting to focus more on lifting weights. Resistance machines allow movement only along a ﬁxed path, therefore, reducing the room for poor technique. They are also great if you want to lift a bit heavier without a spotter (someone to help if the weight gets too heavy). They are great practice and will make adding free weights like barbells and dumbbells easier to manage and less daunting. What are sets and reps? Reps are short for repetitions, and it is the action of one complete movement of a particular exercise, for example one bicep curl. Sets are how many times you will complete a number of reps of a given exercise, with a short break in between. When starting out with resistance machines, I would aim for a lighter weight so you can perform 12-15 repetitions per exercise. Repeat for 2 sets. Alice Verdeca – this is a native grape variety to Puglia and sadly dying out, but for a few farmers who keep their vines going. Full of waxy lemon, floral apple blossom, pear and white stony fruits. The palate is round, beautifully fresh and saline on the finish. Utterly delightful with antipasti. So good that when we had it on our weekly wine tasting, it sold out. Zin Fiano – much like the Alice, this wine is floral and intensely perfumed. Plenty of ripe apple, pear, peach and again that lovely saline finish. A slightly more oily texture than the Verdaca, and more of a food wine, but still delicious on its own. Another beauty of a wine that flies off the shelves when tasted. Lirica Primitivo – This is just a delicious glass of sunshine. Plenty of sweet plum, black cherry and blackcurrant, all supported by a little bit of spice and aniseed from spending six months in old Slavonian oak. Food flexible wine which pairs well with roast red meats, grills, pasta with ragu sauce. Great wine isn’t just about the varieties of grape and the region it comes from, it goes beyond that and things to consider are how and when the grapes are harvested, temperature, altitude, coastal or non-coastal, the ground itself, sunlight hours etc. However, in a romantic way I like to think LOVE and PASSION should be right up there. Why focus on this area and in particular one producer? Well, it epitomises what we are constantly looking for in terms of the love and passion that can be tasted in the wines we try to source, please read on and I hope what I’m trying to say becomes clear…. Puglia - A land full of fresh peaches, tomatoes to die for, and some extremely rich and delicious wine. In the small town of Manduria you come across a cooperative known as Produttori di Manduria where they focus on quality. Started in 1932 with a focus on the prime quality of Primitivo, the company is now owned by nearly 400 farmers who grow their grapes for the cooperative. They each get an equal share of the proﬁts. The age of the vines mirrors the age of the people who grow them, ranging from 25 years to nearly 100 years old. To me, the whole ethos for what contributes to great wine making is embodied in this attitude and exactly what we are constantly looking for. As I said before, “love and passion” is what it’s all about, and the rewards? Well, I’ve listed below 3 wines produced by the cooperative that were entered into this year’s Wine Merchant Top 100 and all 3 got into the list - a truly staggering achievement!

The seasons have turned and the hedgerows are full of blackberries, apples, damsons and sloes. Throughout our 36 acres of country park, through our ancient woodland, along our canal towpath and up and down the many pathways we have, there are plenty of natures autumns gifts waiting to be picked. The blackberries are perfect for homemade jam or combine them with the apples for a superb apple and blackberry crumble. After the first frost, seek out our sloe bushes. Prick them and add them to sugar, water and gin, let them steep for a few months and you have yourself a fine winter tipple. Here at the Moira Furnace, we are winding down, but there is still a lot to look forward to. Our craft fair returns on the first Sunday of September and October with a special Christmas craft fair in December. Tuesday 13th September sees the last of our hugely popular car rallies where we have been welcoming over 350 beautiful cars and many visitors to come and dream of owning one themselves. Finally, we are now looking to Halloween on Sunday 30th October where we will be repeating our extremely successful Spooktacular event again this year.

Our ﬁrst play of the season, Cheshire Cats by Gail Young, opens this month. It involves 6 women from Chester who wish to raise money for cancer by taking part in a ‘Moonwalk’. We follow the ‘Cheshire Cats’ as they travel to London, and through their walk we share their encounters and adventures until they return to Chester and come back to earth. The production runs from Thursday 8th to Saturday 17th September. Tickets £10.

A beautiful prize-winning garden from RHS Chelsea, titled The Meta Garden: Growing the Future, opened in the summer at Conkers Discovery Centre.

The garden was designed by landscape architect Joe Perkins (see below) for RHS Chelsea, then reimagined for the larger space at Conkers, aiming to blend into the surrounding woodland.

The garden is all about championing natural solutions to climate change and the threats to biodiversity and how we can both create more and protect our wonderful British woodlands. By rehoming the garden and making it more accessible we hope it will help people to connect with each other to better understand, care for and enjoy the National Forest.

One of the great joys for St Helen’s when we received Heritage Lottery funding was the institution of an annual lecture series over the autumn and winter months. What varied and fascinating subjects they have brought to entertain the many Ashby residents who attended. And so, after a gap of two years, we are delighted to announce that our popular Heritage Talks will return in September 2022.

Talks will be on the fourth Tuesday of every month (except December) until March 2023. They begin on September 27th when Peter Liddle MBE, former County Archaeologist, will speak on ‘Discovering the Rutland Roman Villa.’ He will describe how the project began with a few bits of pottery spotted on farmland and how it led, via a major excavation undertaken by the University of Leicester, to a site now protected as a scheduled monument. Especially, he’ll uncover for us the most exciting discovery of all - the dramatic mosaic with its panels portraying a scene from the Siege of Troy as described in the Iliad, the ﬁrst Roman mosaic

St Helens Church & Heritage Centre Heritage Talks 2022—2023 of its kind to be found in the UK. No wonder it made it onto the national news and was the subject of an edition of BBC 2’s Digging for Britain earlier this year. Later talks in the series will include history ﬁlms created in the St Helen’s Church building, a look at the passing of a thousand years in a parish church, medieval grafﬁti, and tales of all sorts of subterfuge at Breedon on the Hill.

Michael Heseltine, Secretary of State for the Environment planted the first tree at Willesley Wood near Ashby in November 1991. Our woods range in size from tiny Georgina’s Wood at Appleby Magna (2.5 acres) to our flagship Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Wood at Normanton le Heath at 660 acres, opened in 2012. Our woods cover the entire National Forest area from Battlestead Hill on the west side of Burton on Trent to Felicity’s and Martin’s Woods to the north of Beacon Hill; all these woods command excellent views of the surrounding countryside. In 1993 we planted Centenary and Tigers Wood at Bagworth where you can find a memorial to the Leicestershire “Tigers” Regiment”. Towards the centre of the Forest there is a cluster of woods with Top Wood and Penguin Woods between Linton and Coton in the Elms. Coton Wood and Foxley Wood are nearby and appreciated by the local community for their views and walks. Foxley Wood has recently been thinned in places by the Heartwood Community Woodfuel group who have worked in several of our woods.

Increasing Participation in Sport

The action begins with the launch of the Ashby Sport online platform , comprising a fully interactive website representing each of the participating clubs and oodles of soc ial media activity on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. With the help of local marketing company Kangaroo UK, the ambition and focus is to make Ashby Sport the go to, one stop portal for all sports in the town. Alongside the online activity, there is a rang e of other planned initiatives to build on the spirit of alliance and collaboration: Ashby Sport Festival in collaboration with REALfest A fantastic fun day, planned for 3rd July of the town on the Bath Grounds. Ashby Sport is the brainchild of a small group of representatives from Ashby Town Council, Football, Rugby and Cricket who share a common inter collaboration to increase sports profile and engagement.

The club are now looking forward to the new season in the Loughborough Table Tennis Leagues and have entered two teams. Coaching sessions for juniors are also currently being organised. The lawn is the focal point and socialising space of most gardens, and it needs love to survive through a dry spell. Annoying brown patches, slow recovery and weeds can all result from a period of drought. Do not despair though; there are a range of things you can do to help your lawn ﬁght back. You might not be able to prevent all of the damage, but you can minimise it greatly by taking some simple steps. Some steps you can take alone, and some are in partnership with leading lawn experts, GreenThumb. Just like humans, a lawn needs to drink during hot weather. In late September and October, the ornamental grasses really show their value as they stand resolute and graceful in the borders. Excellent grasses for all sizes of gardens are Calamagrostis ‘Karl Foerster’ which are tall, upright and narrow in shape. Despite being whipped around by the wind, this grass always seems to stand back up again. A nice contrast is a lower soft swaying Stipa tenuissima which, at this time of year, becomes golden coloured and stays looking beautiful throughout the season. Please don’t be tempted to cut down ornamental grasses in autumn. Instead leave any cutting back until February. The top growth of leaves will help to protect the crown of the plant and insulate it from long hard frosts.

For inspiration on planting grasses I would suggest visiting Trentham Gardens in Staffordshire. The Trentham Estate is just off Junction 15 of the M6 and is well worth the drive. The Trentham Estate also offers a garden centre as well as a shopping village with restaurants.

Remember to plant in groups or repeat planting in a rhythmic sequence throughout. Using grasses really does seem to extend the interest of a garden well into wintertime. A light early frost on the thin arching stems of an ornamental grass is a beautiful thing to behold.

Financial readiness - Confidence in financial readiness to retire has fallen, with only 25% feeling financially ready to retire, versus 30% in 2021. A key factor in this fall being the rising cost of living, with 28% of respondents unsure how to mitigate the impact of rising inflation on their retirement income –a prime concern for those with large cash holdings.

The first week in September is officially Chimney Fire Safety Week, so here are are our top tips to ‘enjoy the fire you want’ and ‘not the fire you don’t’. • Appoint a skilled and technically competent chimney engineer. • Keep the flue shafts clear. • Ensure appliances are mechanically safe and fully functioning and that masonry chimneys are mechanically and structurally sound. • Replenish the fuel source sparingly - overfilling the chimney can result in a large fire which is more difficult to manage. • Burn only dry materials such as dry wood and coal - wet woods increase the build-up of creosote. • Ensure the fire is turned off, or extinguished, a few hours before going to sleep, or leaving the house, and never leave it unattended. • Buying a property? What is an ‘on notice’ completion date when buying a new build?

We’re buying a new build house and part exchanging our current property. We bought our house off-plan after seeing the show home and had been given a completion date, but the date has now been brought forward by a week on very short notice. We’d already booked the removal van. We’ve both arranged annual leave and childcare for the original date and can’t change it now. The developers are saying that we shouldn’t have been given the original date. How did this happen and what can we do to resolve the problem?

The good news is that, because you’ve used a part exchange scheme, you should be able to get a licence to occupy your current property for that extra week so you can still move on the date you planned. This means that you’ll have the keys to both properties and you could start moving some of your belongings if that’s practical. This will involve some extra costs as you’ll need to pay for the insurance on both properties during that week. You’ll also need to pay a retainer fee of approximately £500 for the licence, however, this will be refunded after your purchase is complete.

It sounds as though you were given an ‘on notice’ completion date without being told what that meant. ‘On notice’ completion dates are usually given when you’ve bought the house off-plan and it’s still being built. It means that you aren’t tied in and have the right to pull out if the build isn’t completed within a specified time. It also gives the builder extra time to get everything finished in line with the relevant warranties and standards.

When the developers said you shouldn’t have been given the date, they meant that you shouldn’t have been given a definite date. Fixed completion dates are generally only given when the house has been built and you just need to choose final finishes such as the flooring you’d like. Other than that, you can get on with completing the conveyancing process.
