Now in it’s eighth year the Ashby Santa Fun Run returns on Sunday 4th December. This amazing event, organised by the Rotary Club of Ashby de la Zouch Castle, has raised over £70,000 for local charities in the past seven years through a combination of sponsorship from local businesses and raised by the many Santa’s taking part. Since it’s very outset Ashby Life has been hugely proud to sponsor the event and to run (ok, mainly walk) along with the other Santas on the day.
The main charities to benefit from this year’s event will be Hospice Hope, Ashby Foodbank and Wishes 4 Kids – all fabulous local charities making a difference in our community to people in need of all ages.
As always, entrants will be invited to run or walk the 3km route beginning and finishing at Ashby Bath Grounds dressed in all their festive finery. Whether it’s your fanciest Christmas jumper, the more traditional Santa suit or full on festive fancy dress – the choice is yours.
The event will kick off with a fun warm up at 10.45am before the run begins at 11am. Santa Fun Run resident compere Chris Knight will lead the entertainment with all your favourite Christmas songs. The ‘real’ Rotary Santa and sleigh will be back, and refreshments will be available for supporters and entrants thanks to Ashby Hastings Cricket Club and Stewarts Fish & Chips.
The Ashby Santa Fun Run & Walk is the perfect way to kickstart your festive fun this year. Why not sign up today with friends, family, colleagues, the kids and even the dog? You’ll be guaranteed a fun day whilst you help to raise funds for three worthy local causes. Surely that’s what Christmas is all about.
Entry fees remain at the reduced price of just £6 per person for all age groups. All entrants will receive a 2022 event medal and all Christmas dressed kids will get a free chocolate bar at the end of the fun run thanks to the team at Sweet Memory Lane traditional sweet shop.
You can register online now at www.ashbysantarun.com/sign-up and download your sponsor form to start collecting personal sponsorship to help maximise the amount raised on the day. Don’t forget to follow their Facebook page too for all the latest news – see www.facebook.com/ashbysantarun

Coming up soon, a great play called Remembrance, being performed on Saturday 5th November.
It’s written and performed by the Bill Brookman Theatre company, based in Loughborough. The play concerns love and life in the First World War and features actors and live musicians. The piece grew from the author’s experiences whilst working in war zones across the world. Tickets cost £10.
On Saturday 12th November, The Venture Jazz Club has booked Jake Legg’s Jug Band. Playing authentic music from the 1920’s and 1930’s it should be another night of great music. Tickets are £12 each.
Our next major production is a Mike Harding play ‘Not with a Bang’. This comedy should have the full title ‘Not with a bang but a whimper’ and refers to the actions of a group of women who believe that nuclear weapons should not be allowed in Britain. The issue is comic and serious
but certainly food for thought and greatly entertaining. The play will be performed on Thursday 24th November through to Saturday 3rd December. Tickets cost £10.
By Mike HardingFinally, yet another superb jazz night will take place on Saturday 10th December. It’s our annual visit by The Ashby Big Band. This entertaining evening includes a small Christmas snack as well as great music and songs from our very own big band. Celebrate Christmas in a fun way!

Until I joined Fitness Republic 4 months ago, I had ‘visited’ a gym twice in my entire life and hated both experiences. I say ‘visited’ because I didn’t actually do very much.
My first gym outing was at a leisure centre which had advertised extensively to attract more women members. My ‘induction’ consisted of a quick 5-minute chat in reception, then being launched into the gym. I opened the door to 20 pairs of eyes glaring at me, it was clear the current members really didn’t want any women joining their muscle-packed club.
A couple of years later a friend invited me to a ‘discovery’ day at her gym - a high-end club frequented by body beautifuls wearing the latest ‘must-have’ active wear. After wandering round the gym, not having a clue what I was doing, I headed down to the in-house coffee shop. Over my broad leaf, Matcha-sprinkled infusion they spoke a different language of BMIs, EMOM and AMRAP. I never returned.
Forward another few years and I realised that I needed to do ‘something’ to shape up – my core strength was non-existent, I was breathless putting on my shoes, and changing the bed required a 10-minute lie-down. I walked past Fitness Republic one day to see a 7-day FREE TRIAL being offered, so after at least a week of convincing myself of the very real reasons NOT to do it, I did it.
I arrived with trepidation and the overriding fear of not knowing what I was doing. Ben had obviously drawn the short straw that day, and it was his task to discover my motivations, my goals and generally show me the ropes.
Soon after I bit the bullet and booked my first 10-session personal training with Ben.
I’ve just booked my third 10-session personal training with Ben because my transformation has been remarkable. I am stronger, fitter, more energetic and my balance is much improved. The biggest change, however, is in my mindset, and this is down to Ben’s encouragement, enthusiasm, and guidance.
So, why didn’t I do this years’ ago? Because I didn’t know what I was doing! It’s people who make the difference. Simon, Sarah and all the Fitness Republic team make me feel welcome at every visit, there are no cliques, no grandstanding; just people like me who want to improve their fitness and wellbeing in a friendly environment.
I now walk to my twice-weekly sessions with a spring in my step, looking forward to the challenges that await. I enjoy being in the gym – something I never thought I would say. For anyone who has negative feelings about gyms as I did, or worried about not knowing their way around, or feeling self-conscious – there’s honestly no need. The Fitness Republic team is professional, friendly, welcoming, and genuinely interested in helping people of all ages and levels achieve their goals.

Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually.
But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT).

A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. Do you love to knit? The charity Dementia UK is inviting knitters to knit for 30 minutes a day in November and raise funds for families living with dementia.
At our first Wednesday of the month ‘Knit & Natter’ group we’ve been helping and encouraging a novice knitter who was sponsored to knit every day in October. She has proved that our fabric-craft group can be for newbies as well as those with more experience. She has also proved that being sponsored really makes plenty of practice happen! We hope you might be inspired to give it a go.
November seems like a particularly appropriate month for Dementia UK to choose for its fundraising, because it is a month for ‘remembering’ with All Saints Day and Armistice Day. We mark both these important occasions. Firstly, at the end of October/beginning of November we always commemorate our loved
ones who have departed; and then later in the month it is Remembrance Sunday. So, if you have cherished memories of someone you hold dear who is no longer with us, we’d like to invite you to come to the church to add their names to one of the two special memorials we are creating between 6th and 13th November.
Our Service of Commemoration of the Departed will be on Sunday 6th November at 6pm, and our Remembrance Sunday service begins at 9.15am on November 13th, in time for us to make our way to the town’s war memorial where the service continues with the laying of wreaths and the minute’s silence.
For over 30 years now the Lyric Rooms on Lower Church Street in Ashby has been the key local venue for laughter filled comedy evenings, live entertainment with tribute acts, themed film nights and much more. In recent weeks however, with the handover to new owners Matt and Vanessa, the Lyric Rooms has had a new lease of life with a stunning refurbishment both inside and out.
Matt and Vanessa have worked closely with previous owner Jayne for many years; so are no strangers to the business. In fact, through their family business – Perkins Independent Wine Traders – they have supplied wine to the Lyric Rooms and are perfectly set up to keep the newly decorated bar well stocked. The relaunch of the venue is very much a family affair with daughters Celleste and Fleur also heavily involved.
Whilst the film nights, comedy evenings and tribute acts – all firm favourites with locals – will continue as usual, there will also be plenty of new additions in upcoming months. Many of you will be pleased to hear that the current chef David will remain in charge of the kitchen; creating his renowned freshly made food for all occasions. Having spent 14 years in Spain, he will also be putting his knowledge of all things Mediterranean to the test and introducing brand new Tapas evenings.
Similarly, Matt and Vanessa will be looking to trial new events such as steak and red wine tasting evenings – offering a tutored wine tasting alongside the meal as the perfect accompaniment. The New Year will also see the launch of a new Sunday Lunch menu on the first
Sunday of each month and regular Vintage Afternoon Tea sittings on the last Sunday of every month (bookings only for both).
A key focus for the new owners will be establishing The Lyric Rooms as the first choice in Ashby for private parties and weddings. Whether you’re planning a christening, a dinner dance or a celebration of any kind the function room can be set up for all occasions. Parties of up to 150 guests can be catered for, whilst the dance floor and stage allow for both live music and discos. There’s even a brand new cocktail bar to be enjoyed.
For details of upcoming events, for more information on booking a private party and all the latest news make sure to follow The Lyric Rooms on Facebook and Instagram and to check out their newly revamped website; www.thelyricroomsashby.co.uk

The Trustees are delighted they were successful with a Grant Application to MDEM (Museum Development East Midlands) for a Mini PC Windows 11 Pro computer for archiving our artefacts as the old computer had broken down. We also received finance to upgrade our Hikvision DVR 16 Channel video recorder, which will enable us to add two CCTV cameras for security reasons. We are most grateful to the Grants committee for supporting us. We are also hoping to add to our new Touchscreen database before Christmas.
Christmas cards are selling well. Please pop into the museum to buy yours. Designed by local artist Di Lorriman, they feature a number of local scenes including Market Street, the Loudoun Memorial, Mill Lane Mews and Ashby Castle.
Please note we will be closing for our usual two week break over the festive period from Wednesday 21st December at 1.30pm, reopening on Wednesday January 4th 2023 at 11am.

Once again, we’re nearing the end of another season. As the weather grows colder with the anticipation of the first frost, the misty mornings at Calke provide the perfect backdrop for golden hues to shine through the trees, creating a magical atmosphere.
Now is the perfect time to explore all that Calke has to offer, with an autumn free pass running until Wednesday 30th November. The ticket allows up to two adults and four children to enter a National Trust site for free, giving everyone the chance to make new memories at Calke. Please visit the website for more details and keep reading to find out how to make the most of your visit.
Wrap up warm and take in the last moments of Autumn on a walk through the parkland. The Tramway Trail is the ideal route to explore the countryside and take in some fresh air. With an accessible route, the multi-use trail is perfect for everyone. Enjoy landscapes of woodland, farmland, peaceful pasture, and discover part of the old horse-drawn tramway that linked Ticknall to Ashby. Or, get your blood pumping on a bike ride; with a relatively flat surface, it’s perfect for new or rusty cyclists to grow their confidence.
The natural woodland play area at Calke Explore is open all year round, allowing kids to go wild in
nature no matter the season. Zip up your coat, pull on a hat and get ready for adventures in the woods. Or if you need some peace and quiet, take a breather on a bench overlooking the wetlands. The refreshment kiosk is open at weekends, so you can play all day and then warm up with a cuppa or hot chocolate if you’d prefer.
The house is now closed for winter, however, there are behind-the-scenes tours taking place if you’re seeking a VIP experience. The tongue-incheek of Calke Unlocked tours have reappeared in the house, giving you fast-paced flavour of the house and rooms off the traditional visitor journey path. To showcase the collection team, conservation tours are also available. These give you exclusive access to the house and allow you to venture into areas where the team carries out their important work. You’ll also get to see the dust covers that conceal the collection, creating an eery atmosphere, as the team put the house to sleep for winter. Visit the What’s On page of the website – www.nationaltrust.org.uk/calke-abbey - to book your place now.
As the festive season approaches, I thought I’d look at a few classics. Other wines may come and go but there are a few names that seem to be ever present and when revisited people are reminded why they are staples of so many wine racks and wine lists.
Domaine des Herbauges, Muscadet sue lie Cotes De Grandlieu, La Roche Blanche, Loire, France
Muscadet seems to have become a little forgotten but trust me – it’s worth revisiting. A great quality wine, it gives a lot more than others at the same price point. With a deep, golden colour, this is a charming, full-bodied Muscadet that expresses beautiful minerality, honey and grapefruit notes. The palate has flattering lemon with a light crisp finish. The perfect aperitif. Pair this with delicate salmon, seafood dishes, mature goats cheese or Asian cuisine.
Montsablé Chardonnay, IGP Pays D'Oc, France
Yes, we are talking Chardonnay!! Believe me they are not all the same. It’s all about the amount of oaking. The wines of Montsablé are inspired by the desire to create elegant Burgundian varietals from Southern France. Minimal oak is used resulting in Chardonnay with great palate weight, bright fruit and texture. A bright yellow gold hue and seductive scents

of blossom and cinnamon spice. A remarkable melange of pears, peach, honey toffee, cream and vanilla (from a short spell of oak ageing) on the palate. Beautifully balanced with ripeness, acidity, length and real structure. A very classy Chardonnay. A great match for fish or roast chicken.
La Cote Sauvage, Cairanne AOC, Cotes du Rhone, France Cotes du Rhone, some people’s go to red and to others a forgotten gem. For this La Côte Sauvage, fully ripe Grenache and Syrah grapes are hand picked from old bush vines on selected hillside slopes within Cairanne. A rich, intense wine drenched in dark red fruits. Cherry and a touch of cinnamon spice on the nose, soft dark plummy fruit, liquorice, chocolate, a hint of black tea on the palate. This wine is fullflavoured and smooth with subtle tannins.
A rich, savoury, satisfying mouthfulthe perfect match for red meat dishes and rich stews.
How about a little Chianti?
Pronounced aromas of ripe black fruit, morello cherry with floral hints and a touch of lightly spicy oak. The palate is richly-flavoured with plum, wild cherry fruit, balsamic notes and firm but ripe tannins - leading on to a long, dry and savoury finish. Fantastic with a Florentine steak.

Do you have a whole host of guests crashing into your home this Christmas? Will your guest bedroom live up to expectations? If not it’s in good company, did you know guest bedrooms receive the least love? Only 8% of homeowners are happy with them.
While many of us want to live in a well organised home and have a multifunctional guest room, if truth be told most of us don’t know where to begin. The guest bedroom often becomes a dumping ground for homeless household goods and soon your clutter free haven disintegrates into disorganised chaos.
Help is on hand with Gliderobes. Here are their top tips to create a clutter free guest room that can be used all year round.
• Decluttering is the first step to a calm and ordered room. If an object no longer serves a purpose, why keep it? Letting things pile up leads to a more chaotic life. Once you’ve recycled and got rid of what you don’t need it’s time to deal with what you do need.
• Divide the room into three equally important zones: Sleeping, Storage and Relaxing. The focal point is usually the bed but investing in practical and eye-pleasing fitted wardrobes will certainly make a real statement.
• Choosing the right storage to keep the bedroom looking pristine and tidy is essential. The clever designs of Made to Measure Fitted Wardrobes from Gliderobes can be flexible and functional and fit any angle or slope. The interior just like the exterior can be customised to suit your exact needs and Gliderobes will make sure to use of every inch of space you have.
• Designing the wardrobe doors that reflect your style is exciting. Don’t forget using mirrors and glass will help bounce light around the room making it feel more spacious. For a textured, tactile look choose woods which will give a warm, cosy feeling.
• Add matching freestanding or fitted furniture for a cohesive look. Chests and bedside tables that complement, match or contrast your overall scheme will help you stash and store all your possessions in style.
• Finally, remember to always inject your guest room with a touch of personality. Your home is not a hotel and you should aim to create a space where you want to spend time even when you’re not entertaining visitors.
Take control of your guest bedroom and keep clutter at bay with a made to measure fitted wardrobe. Give your guests the right impression with sleek and stylish bedroom storage that will make them green with envy.
We may be biased, but we think the best things in life are trees! If you do too, you can help us grow the National Forest by dedicating a tree. Whether you want to give a special gift this Christmas that can be cherished for years to come, dedicate in memory of a loved one, or simply give back to the environment, dedicating a tree in the National Forest is a great thing to do and helps towards creating a greener future.
The National Forest has shown that trees inspire change, and not just for our landscape. By dedicating a tree, you will not only be helping to continue to grow the Forest, you will be helping to create the best conditions for wildlife to thrive, as well as a place where people can connect with nature and the outdoors.
Imagine our landscape scarred by centuries of coal mining. Decades ago, this was the reality. A landscape once black is now lush and green. In order to meet the challenges of climate change, our Forest must be resilient and adaptable into the future. We must continue to plant new woodlands, extend other habitats and improve connections so the benefits of the Forest can be felt by everyone. By dedicating a tree, you will be taking the first step in helping us to tackle these issues and help us to grow a greener future together.
plant from our selection of saplings including oak, hazel and silver birch.
Each dedication comes with a personalised certificate for you to download at home and a guarantee that your tree will be planted in the National Forest.
The planting season runs from November to March each year, and once your tree is planted, we contact you to confirm the location of the young woodland and how to visit, but please note that we do not mark individual trees in any way.
Each tree costs just £15, which covers the cost of not only the tree, but also a contribution to the purchase of the land and the future upkeep and management of the woodland. Your support for the National Forest is invaluable. Help us plant more trees in the National Forest and dedicate a tree here: nationalforest.org/ shop/dedicate-tree
So how do you dedicate a tree? Dedicating a tree online is simple, so simple you won’t even get your hands muddy! We do the planting, you just decide which type of tree you would like us to nationalforest.org
The mortgage market is very strained at the moment with the uncertainty over further Interest rate increases, leaving lenders and the consumer very confused over the coming months and possibly years.
I am regularly being asked: “If I have a mortgage now or are planning to have a mortgage for the first time is it best to wait hoping rates will come down again or am I best to fix any rates that are available now as the fear is that rates will increase even further?”
The simple answer is “no one really knows” the best advice I can give is if you can obtain a mortgage that is fixed and affordable to you now and within your budget then at least if you fix the rate you have that certainty moving forward. If you wait, you run the risk of the rates continuing to rise further. Inflation has increased dramatically over the last few months and to reduce this figure the Bank Of England has had to keep raising rates, with many consumers now watching what they spend, this should shrink inflation and when this happens Interest rates normally follow, but how long this will take and to what degree is unfortunately unknown.
If you move to a new Fixed Rate either with your current lender
or a new lender you should be able to obtain a lower rate than your existing lender’s Standard Variable Rate. Upon your application being submitted, the mortgage deal you’ve applied for is then reserved typically for a three month period. If however, you are currently on a fixed rate, you will normally have a redemption penalty to pay if you want to change to a new product before the end of your fixed rate period. If however, you wait until the end of your fixed rate period and want to transfer to a different rate with your existing Lender, again typically, this will be allowed if you apply within 3 months of the end of your existing deal. Some Lenders more recently have increased this period to 6 months.
The combination of high energy bills, high inflation and higher
interest rates leave us all with a stormy future, so it is best to plan and act ahead to reduce any further shocks that may be waiting for all of us.
With your mortgage, it is best to speak to an experienced, independent mortgage broker, who can assess your situation, taking into account your current arrangements, wants and needs as well as your affordability and provide you with unbiased advice and to look at all the options available to you.
With energy bills rising sharply and taking many of us by surprise, there is a general worry about the cost of heating our homes. There are, in fact, many simple solutions to making us feel warmer and more comfortable at home. Without further ado, let’s go through the checklist now ……
Adding curtains and blinds will help to reduce heat loss. Before we add them, it is wise to seal any gaps around the window and door frames. For best results, opt for thermal lining for your curtains and blinds as it will help to retain heat, and keep out the cold. Curtains and blinds will also transform the look of your windows.
If you are lucky enough to have a stove or a wood burner, the time has come to take advantage of it. The magic of a roaring fire is so mesmerising and can make you feel warm inside and out. To enhance the ambience even further, you can add some tea-lights and candles. If safety is of a concern, there are now very realistic battery operated candles which you can purchase. Real flame ‘Deluxe Candles’ are the best ones I have come across, with a long battery life. The flames look very realistic and are 100% safe in the home.
For those of us who love cushions and throws, you can now convince everyone in your household that they are necessary for everybody to keep warm. You can certainly add more in all rooms to make your home cosier. Good quality merino wool throws will keep you nice and warm
and feel very soft on your skin. To add a touch of glamour, you can add fur throws on seats. For your comfy bed, invest in a high tog wool duvet as it will wick away moisture as well keeping you warm.
For those cold tiled floors, it is time to cover them up with sumptuous carpet or rugs to add warmth and comfort underfoot. Wool carpet with high tog value coupled with a good quality underlay will help to warm your bedrooms and retain heat. If you don’t fancy covering up the whole floor, choose the largest size rug the area can accommodate, as it will define an area and give it a more intimate feel. If the rug size is too small, it can often become a tripping hazard as well as looking a bit silly.
Finally, if you are still using high wattage light bulbs, it is time to replace them all with warm white LED light bulbs. They cost very little to run and will light your home beautifully in an instant.

Did you see the recently broadcast programme on ITV, ‘Putting up with Parkinson’s’ ?
18 months after diagnosis, it was Jeremy Paxman’s take on how Parkinson’s affects him. It led him to meet research experts, attend a ballet class and a bowls club as well as talking to others affected by the condition, including Paul Sinha, diagnosed aged 49. It highlighted that Parkinson’s is more than just a ‘shaking palsy’ and emphasised the need for exercise and staying active.
Parkinson’s is a neurodegenerative disorder which means it causes problems with the brain and gets worse over time. It affects around 1 in 350 adults, in the UK. Shaking is the symptom most people associate with Parkinson’s but it is a complex condition and can present with many other signs and symptoms including stiffness and slowness of movement, slurred or slow speech, changes in balance reactions, stooped posture and a less expressive face. There may be invisible symptoms too including sleep disturbances,
anxiety and depression, slowness of thought, memory loss, tiredness, bladder and bowel problems.
Medical treatment is able to relieve symptoms but as yet there is no cure and research is ongoing.
Exercise is essential to reduce the effects of Parkinson’s and slow down progress of the disease. In Ashby, Parkinson’s specific exercise classes take place at the Leisure Centre and a support and social group meet monthly in Packington. If you are interested in either of these, please contact Sue Forrest, ProPhysio’s affiliated neurological specialist physiotherapist on 07530 012 701.

If your dog begins to scratch more than normal or has inflammation or dryness that provokes the itches, it could have a mild skin infection, treatable with tablets and medicated creams.
Due to their poor perception of time, a lot of dogs may not know when their next meal is coming, hence even when they eat quickly, they will still hunt around for more food. One in four dogs is obese, climbing to almost one in two between the ages of 5-11.
Kennel Cough is a honking or hitch-pitched cough, which can be accompanied by a retch. It’s an infection usually associated with dogs who are in kennels, is very contagious, and medication is highly recommended.
These can be as painful and irritating for dogs as in humans, and our pals will show their discomfort by shaking their head, pawing at the
pain, and perhaps yelping. Almost a fifth of trips to the vets are caused by ear infections.
A disease that causes crippling pain to, usually, larger dogs, and is caused by poor development of the hip joint. The femur head does not correspond correctly with the socket housing it should be fitted in, leading to severe pain.
If teeth are not looked after, mouths can become diseased. One of the most common problems in dogs, a decent daily brushing routine will keep teeth clean and breath smelling fresh.

At Simpson Jones we firmly believe that everyone should have a Lasting Power of Attorney in place. Our new head of department, Luke Smyth, says that “it can be hard to digest but the course of your life can change in a heartbeat. In a matter of moments you can go from being fit and healthy to being hospitalised and unable to manage your own affairs”.
Whilst this may seem dramatic, if you want to be certain that your legal affairs are in order if you lose capacity then you need to ensure that you have a professionally drafted Lasting Power of Attorney. A Lasting Power of Attorney is the document which appoints people to deal with matters for you should you ever lose capacity and it will help your loved ones during what will be a challenging time for them. We believe that you should make your Lasting Power of Attorney because:
You control what happens. If you lose capacity then your appointed people can make decisions for
you. This could be in respect of your money, your property, and your healthcare.
You decide who is in charge because you appoint trusted individuals to act in your best interests. This could be your partner, your children or friends and you can appoint several people to act for you.
If you do not have a Lasting Power of Attorney in place and you lose capacity then it can be very difficult to manage your affairs. Your loved ones are not automatically entitled to take control of your affairs. They may be required to apply to court for a specialist court order which is expensive, stressful and time-consuming.
It offers peace of mind to your loved ones. Accidents can happen and aged-related illnesses are becoming more prevalent. If you have a Lasting Power of Attorney in place you can be assured that even if the worst were to happen your affairs will be looked after by someone you can trust.
If you would like to discuss making your Lasting Power of Attorney please do not hesitate to get in touch.
Plan ahead. Talk to one of our specialists today.
We are sorry to announce that Dr Sowbaan Tarapuri will leave the practice in November and we would like to wish him all the best in his new role. We are pleased to announce that Julia will be joining the team as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner.
During the winter period it is important that we look after ourselves and there is some useful advice available on the NHS website www.nhs.uk/ live-well/seasonal-health/keep-warm-keep-well/
Keep you and your home warm by following a few simple steps, keep bedroom windows closed, draw curtains at dusk, keep door closed, have at least one hot meal a day, have a hot drink regularly.
You may find that you suffer from a cold, flu, cough or sore throat. These types of infections will be viral, you can treat your symptoms with over-thecounter medication and your local pharmacy can offer advice. Please note that antibiotics do not
work for viral infections and they are no longer being routinely prescribed to treat these types of infections.
If you are eligible for the flu or covid vaccination please take us up on this when we offer you an appointment. We are continuing to vaccinate patients during November. Appointments are available, if you have received a text message with a link to book an appointment, please use this. The past couple of years have undoubtedly been a challenge for us all but, by pulling together, we have managed to get though an extraordinarily difficult period. Now, as we emerge into the post-COVID economy, we face a different set of challenges which, in their own way, appear no less daunting. One thing though does stay the same – we’re still here, by your side, and determined to continue steering you safely through any financially choppy waters that lie ahead.
Economic uncertainties - Although the economy did stage a tentative recovery last year and in the early part of 2022, it’s fair to say the outlook has become increasingly challenging in recent months. Surging inflation has curtailed our spending power and, with energy bills set to rise further over the autumn and winter months, the cost-of-living squeeze looks set to continue for now. Higher-than expected inflation has also triggered a rise in interest rates, while fallout from the war in Ukraine adds to a cocktail of economic uncertainties.
Planning is paramount - No one is immune from these difficulties; while some will struggle more than others, we will all be impacted to some degree.
In many ways, though, times like these serve to emphasise why people seek professional financial advice in the first place. Economic downturns are normal but having a sound, structured plan helps to ensure our financial goals and aspirations are not derailed when one does occur.
Financial wellbeing - Arguably, protecting your financial wellbeing has never been so important and the best way to do so is by sticking to your financial plan. It’s therefore essential to try to maintain any ongoing commitments such as pension contributions, protection premiums and regular savings policies if you possibly can.
We’re here to help - It’s also vitally important to keep talking, so do get in touch if you need our help. We’re here for both you and your family; ensuring your financial wellbeing is, and always will be, our primary area of concern.
At DGS we take the time to understand our client’s unique planning needs and circumstances, so that we can provide you with the most suitable solutions in the most costeffective way. For a free review of your current financial situation, please contact Ian Staley on 01530 567020.

Can we ever be wholly holy? If your faith is part of your primary identity, it’s fair and reasonable that those around you see you acting in the way that your faith encourages you to live. However, if someone does not appear to meet the standard society expects of their behaviour and actions, people are quick to notice the inconsistencies. If you live according to your faith, there is an expectation to be ‘holy’. But what does being holy even mean?
The word ‘holy’ when used in the Bible carries a meaning of being separated from things of the world and being close to God instead. It’s a word which means dedication to a way of life with God at the centre of all that you do. In the Old Testament God asked his people the Jews to be holy; to ignore the other nations and religions around them and follow Him and His laws. Then,
through Jesus, God asks us all to be holy and to separate ourselves from a world which has been corrupted by humanity’s greed and selfishness.
But can we really be wholly holy? The short answer is no because of our imperfect human nature. However, the joy in our Christian faith comes from the fact that God is prepared to overlook our weaknesses and faults if we show that we are trying our best to be close to Him and put Him first. We may not always achieve complete holiness in our lives, often far from it, but God does at least love a tryer!

Mahonias are great plants much loved by designers, they make a lovely focal point and look good throughout the year. They are hardy, with glossy ever green leaves, flowers and berries.
For winter flowers look for the variety Mahonia x media ‘Charity’. This is a monster one that can get up to 5m high and 4m across. It flowers generously at the end of its branches offering fabulous sprays of yellow flowers. This particular plant will give you sweet, scented flowers from November to March. The glossy leaves are sharp like holly, so it needs to be planted where you won’t brush against it too often. Purple berries that follow the flowers are a good food source for birds. The berries are ornamental, and a few spare sprigs can be used for flower arranging.
Once established, this plant offers space beneath it for an under storey of spring bulbs or shady loving perennials. It is versatile and favours shade but will also do well in sun. It requires no pruning but would like a feed every spring; well rotted manure or compost is all it needs. These are good value plants that can be brought for under £10.
Another great choice for winter flowers is Mahonia x media ‘Winter Sun’, another fast

growing Mahonia which flowers from November to March. It too grows to 5m high and 4m across. If it outgrows its space it can be pruned in spring time after it has finished flowering back to a side shoot. It will regrow from the base to make a bushy plant.
There are other Mahonias but their flowers don’t appear in winter. They are worth a small mention as they are still super plants. Mahonia nitens ‘Cabaret’ flowers from August to November. Unlike most Mahonias it prefers sun or just partial shade. Its flowers are gorgeous, flame orange yellow sunshine centres. Mahonia ‘Soft caress’ is a variety which won the Chelsea Flower Show Plant of the year in 2013. It is only 1m across and 1m high when fully grown and flowers August to October in sun to full shade and its leaves are not spiky. Mahonia Volcano again likes sun to partial shade and flowers from August to November. It has orange to yellow flowers with fern like leaves which look quite tropical.

It’s great that you’ve heard about the new rules. The advice that you were given was right at the time. Under the old rules, you only had to register a trust with HMRC if there was tax to pay on it. This could be income tax, inheritance tax, capital gains or any other type of tax. The rules have been changed to make all financial dealings more transparent. It can also help to prevent money laundering.
Your trust will need to be registered as the money is being held for more than two years. The trust has been in place for four years already and your daughter won’t be able to inherit for at least another six years if the money is going to come to her when she’s 18.
As you’re a trustee, you’ll be responsible for
registering the trust with HMRC. It’s a process that is completed online; however, you’ll need to gather information about the people involved, including their dates of birth and National Insurance numbers. You’ll also need to know the type of trust, its name and the date it was created.
This is only one example of the type of trust that’s affected by the new rules. If you’re a trustee our experts can give you professional advice to understand whether the rules apply to you and what steps you need to take. As bonfire night approaches, the night sky is lit up with firework displays. With all the sparkle it’s easy to forget that fireworks can be dangerous if not used correctly and responsibly. This advice will help you and your family to stay safe while celebrating. The safest way to enjoy fireworks is at an organised display. The fireworks will be bigger, you’re not responsible for safety and you’ll be part of the crowd. If you do decide to host your own firework display, here’s how you and your guests can stay safe.
Read all the instructions
The box of fireworks will tell you important things like how far people need to stand back once the firework is lit. Make sure to read all the safety warnings.
Most shops, like supermarkets, can only sell fireworks on certain dates during the year. If you’re buying them at a different time you need to visit a specially licensed shop. It’s illegal for under-18s to buy or carry fireworks.
Did you know that you can’t let fireworks off between 11pm and 7am? The only exceptions are Bonfire night, when the cut off is midnight, and New Year’s Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year, when it’s 1am.
Don’t let children help Kids should enjoy the display from a distance and should not be allowed to handle fireworks, tapers and matches.
Keep pets indoors Furry friends should stay inside. Don’t forget that they might be scared by the fireworks.

As we move firmly into Autumn, we hope you’re enjoying the seasonal changes as much as we are, with the sight of gorgeous golden leaves to cherish. Recently we have been working in places such as Swadlincote Woods to maintain open glades, which are important habitats for wildlife like butterflies. Over the next couple of months we have volunteer days lined up at some brilliant community nature reserves and new volunteers are most welcome to join in. Here’s just some of what we have lined up:
On Saturday 5th and Tuesday 8th November we will be at Whistlewood Common near Melbourne to lay a section of hedge, which is a traditional way of managing hedgerows as boundaries and habitats, notably for hedgehogs. This is something we’re especially looking forward to, as Whistlewood Common is an excellent community project and we’ll be working in partnership with CPRE Derbyshire who are campaigning for more hedgerows to help tackle the climate crisis.
On Saturday 26th November and Saturday 3rd December we’ll be planting a new hedgerow
at Albert Village Allotments near Swadlincote and starting in November we will be running community wood-fuel days at Bagworth Heath and Donington le Heath, which everyone is most welcome to come to. You’ll learn about woodland management and can take away logs for your wood burners afterwards. It’s a win-win.
