2020 CHRISTMAS COVER COMPETITION In the last couple of years our Christmas cover competitions featuring festive drawings by local children have proved to be extremely popular.

We have been overwhelmed by both the sheer number of pictures received but also the time and effort taken by the kids to produce fantastic images of Santa, his reindeer, the elves and much much more. It’s a great way to kick off Christmas.

This year we wanted to give the cover competition a refresh but still produce a December cover which will bring a smile to people’s faces and maybe even produce an ‘aah’. So we’ve turned to our pets!! Yes, we’re asking you to share your photos of your pets in all their festive finery. Show off your dogs in their Xmas jumpers, your cats in their elf hats (good luck with that one) and surprise us with your more unusual pets looking ready for Christmas.

NOVEMBER’S WINE SELECTION Karl from The Honest Wine Company continues his monthly series of tips for top wines with recommendations for the best wines to try in November!

Sileni, Sauvignon blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand This is all about what made Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc famous.

Grown on a variety of soil types - gravels which provide tropical flavours, clay loams which produce citrus notes, and deep silty soils which lift the aromatic quality then fermented in stainless steel tanks to retain the natural fruit characters. HAIR & BEAUTY TIPS While we have welcomed back many of our clients to the salon, some have decided to embrace their natural hair colour and hold off on a salon visit for now, in favour of embracing the roots that have appeared during the lockdown months. But how should you get rid of those two-tone ends and natural roots successfully?

Permanently dyed hair will have been stripped of its natural colour and over time can fade or change. The best way to return to your natural hue is to let it grow out and have regular cuts (or all at once if you are feeling brave). A salon treatment can help with the regrowth, providing much needed moisture to lack lustre locks and help to repair any damage the colour has caused.

Another solution is to try a semi-permanent colour, which will gradually fade with each wash. This is a great way to add rich shine, blend the faded end colour and get used to the desired colour that is closer to your natural shade. Most semi-permanent colours have conditioning ingredients that create a glossy finish. If the colour isn’t what you imagined; don’t

worry, most take only up to 24 washes to fade and you can always ask your Stylist for advice.

The balayage look is still very much on trend this season, so if none of the above are for you, embrace those roots and go for it!

BIDDULPH’S PIZZERIA down on Ashby Bath Grounds. This became a regular fixture each Friday night during the cricket season.

In recent months a Friday night delivery from Biddulph’s Pizzeria has become the norm for many local families. Their reputation for superb traditional Italian pizza is backed up by quality customer service. It’s another example of an independent business cleverly adapting to the changes this year has caused for us all.

Jay launched Biddulph’s Pizzeria as a mobile pizza catering company five years ago. Their first catering experience was for Ashby Hastings Cricket Club

From there the company branched out to cater at weddings, parties, fetes and social events offering quality authentic traditional wood fired pizza, made by hand, and cooked in front of the guests. As a fully trained baker with over 35 years experience, Jay has always had a real passion for cooking and baking. Whatever the occasion guests are guaranteed delicious pizzas made using high quality ingredients, imported from Italy to recreate the best Italian Wood Fired Pizza possible.

As with many businesses, this year has meant that Biddulph’s Pizzeria simply couldn’t continue as before. Therefore during lockdown, Jay set up a delivery service within Ashby offering home delivery of his pizzas. The response Jay has had from local residents has been fantastic. MANAGING THE WOODLANDS IN THE NATIONAL FOREST If you hear the sound of chainsaws in the Forest at this time of year, be reassured, it is an essential part of good woodland management.

With over 400 new and mature woodlands throughout its 200 square miles, looking after the woodlands in the National Forest is as important as planting the trees.

Whether through pruning and thinning to produce commercial timber, thinning the ride edges to make the woods attractive places for people to walk or opening up the canopy to let light in and encourage wildflowers and wildlife, looking after the trees and woodlands is an essential part of developing the Forest and fulfilling its role as a national example of best practice.

Over 80% of the National Forest woodlands are in management, compared with the current national average of 59%, and way ahead of government targets for 67% nationally. This has been achieved by supporting and guiding our farmers and landowners through the first stages of establishing their woodlands.

In most instances, a woodland owner will bring in machinery to do the work. A harvester can do the same amount of felling in a day as ten people, making it sometimes the only way the work is viable. For the rest of that season the woodland may look stark and the forest floor disturbed, but the following spring the extra sunlight will dry the ground, encourage wildflowers and bring in more insects and birds. Woodland management is an essential tool in encouraging wildlife into a wood.

Sustainable management means the trees are replaced, so young saplings are continually growing, capturing carbon, and adding to the habitats of the established woodland. The felled trees are processed into sustainable produce, wood items that we all buy: fencing, furniture, firewood, planks, biomass chip - all timber products. If we buy locally, it makes the process even more sustainable.

Once the woodland is established, at around 12-15 years, the trees need thinning, taking out the poorer ones to enable the majority to thrive.

Good management means our woodlands will become resilient, productive and accessible. Resilient to resist disease and adapt to a changing climate, as more air circulates around the diverse species. Productive as the

STEPS CONDUCTIVE EDUCATION CENTRE There is a very special place in the heart of Shepshed called Steps Conductive Education Centre. Steps was founded in 1994 and is a registered charity that is life changing for the children and their families who desperately need help.

Steps supports children with conditions that cause motor impairments or delays. They work with children who have Cerebral Palsy, possible chromosome disorders including Down’s Syndrome, or other conditions which affect their motor skills.

When parents first learn that they are having a baby, they have dreams for the future. To find that their child has additional, and sometimes very complex needs is so very hard to accept and to adjust to. Steps helps to give parents different dreams and to find a way of managing family life. Their goal is to help every child develop the skills that they need to progress and help them to maximise their potential. They also give parents the knowledge, confidence, and strength to understand how to help their child.

Ethan and his sister; Isabella have allowed them to continue to give the families the contact therapy sessions that the children need.

Another difficulty was that the equipment that the children used whilst at Steps was not available to them at home. However, with the help of Ashby Rotary Club and Shepshed Rotary Club, a Magic Box of resources has been posted out to every child for them to use during their sessions. The children loved opening their boxes and finding a letter from our staff team saying how much we all missed them but that we hoped the Magic Box would help them in their sessions.

During the lockdown we have had an increasing number of children wishing to join our service and reaching out for support. This has included children from all over the country and not just in the East Midlands, this is due entirely to the fact that they can access our help remotely and join the online sessions.

They have proven to be an outstanding success and

MESSAGE FROM LAPLAND Hello Everyone,

Here in Lapland we are all very busy getting ready for Christmas, but this year we have a problem that all of you boys and girls can help with.

Because of the Coronavirus – yes we’ve got it here as well - it is important that we all stay safe.

Rudolph has suggested that we do things differently this year.

We all know the rules about keeping our distance and that is really difficult, as I know you like to climb on my sleigh and have a chat. However, I don’t think I have enough hand sanitiser and antibacterial spray to let you all do that. So here is Rudolph’s idea.

I will still visit Ashby and the

surrounding area BUT with some changes. The sleigh will be out on the streets, as usual, during the evenings. I will ask my driver to go really slowly, so you can run down your drive and wave as I go past. Your parents will be getting some more information soon about a tracker, so that you know where I am and you will be ready when I come to your road.

I also know that some of you like to give us money, which my friends in the Rotary Clubs of Ashby de la Zouch use to help local charities.

Mrs. Claus will be letting you know how you can still do this nearer to December (see next month’s issue).

HOSPICE HOPE LIGHTS OF LOVE MEMORIAL For the past 18 years Hospice Hope have held their Lights of Love memorial event every December at the Ferrers Centre, Staunton Harold. We have come together as a community to remember those loved ones who are no longer with us. At the event, tags are hung on the Christmas tree with special messages of love and remembrance, we join in with carols and prayers and our loved one’s names are read out.

This year, we will not be able to be together at the Ferrers Centre, however as our Lights of Love service is so important, instead people will be able to access a very special Lights of Love video that will be available from the 6th December on YouTube. Hospice Hope are also offering everyone a special Lights of Love tag, so that people can still commemorate their loved ones lives on their own Christmas trees or around their homes.

Continuing on from last month I am explaining some more garden jargon and terms with a focus on diseases, pests and weeds.

FUNGICIDES are used for plant diseases such as grey mould, mildew and rust. Many diseases are better prevented than cured. Companion planting (a topic for next month) is an organic method of maintaining a balance in your garden to aid pollination and prevent pests and diseases.

My recommendation would be for biological rather than chemical methods. If for example you identify red spider mites then, rather than spray, you can get a predatory mite known as a phytoseiulus to eat the red spiders. You can buy these online and they will arrive on a piece of card or leaf which can be distributed among the infected plants. Similarly if you have an outbreak of whitefly then a parasitic wasp called

CATERPILLARS can devastate many a plant or dearly loved vegetable patch. A biological solution is possible in the form of a bacterium called bacillus thuringiensis which is bought in sachets of dried spores which you can mix with water and spray on to the affected plants. Generally, a garden with a wild area, wood pile and stinging nettles will attract a variety of insects and creatures that will help to naturally balance your garden without the need for chemicals. A visiting toad should even be welcome as it will eat a variety of slugs and grubs.

HERBICIDES are weed killers. There are basically three types. First, the soil acting type will kill the stems and sap of the plant and is known as a systemic form of weed killer. Systemic weed killers are sprayed or watered onto leaves, and are used often on deep rooted weeds. Second, we have a contact weed killer – this is inactive in the soil and will not kill the roots of a plant, just the leaves or parts of the plant that it comes into direct contact with. The third type is residual and this is where a weed killer is watered onto clean soil to stop weeds from growing.

ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS We have been much encouraged by the number of visitors during our first weeks of reopening, and look forward to welcoming more of you in due course.

Thank you for your support of your local museum.

We had a minimalist Annual General Meeting at the end of September, which was particularly useful for charting our way forward over the next few months. We will be applying for the continuation of the national Accreditation Certificate and improving the glass frontage to the Museum and we also continue to hope for more volunteers.

Your Museum Needs You! Part of the reception area has been reorganised and our collection of old domestic equipment is now on display, with an explanation of what the items were used for.

Temporary exhibition: currently this features bricks mainly from the mid19th to the 20th century, some locally manufactured and some from further afield such as Pembroke and Surrey. It complements our large permanent display adjacent to the display of Domestic items.

Christmas cards: A reminder to all, especially new residents of the town, now on sale is our exclusive, locally designed range depicting scenes in the town from yesteryear for example - Market Street, Castle, St Helen’s Church, Mill Lane Mews.

Ashby’s past: We are always looking to add to this archive, contributions welcome!

We will be encouraging people to share their videos and photographs of them taking part in this fun event via our Facebook.

Despite remaining hopeful that the Ashby Santa Fun Run & Walk would be able to return for it’s 6th year, sadly the organising committee have had to make the very difficult decision not to hold the event this year in it’s traditional format.

There will be no charge for taking part although we will be welcoming donations from people who are able to via a JustGiving link and any money that we raise will be passed on to local charities as we would if we were able to hold our traditional event. It’s been a tough year for us all but in particular for local charities and any donations will make a difference.

LET’S TALK ABOUT FAD DIETS…

There are lots of fad diets out there: low carb, low fat, low calorie, fasting, meal replacements… the list is endless, but which one should you do?

As a teenager I attempted a lot of these diets, and to begin with, they all worked. I lost weight. Unfortunately, the diets weren’t sustainable; you can’t eat like that forever. So, the weight went back on and I moved on to the next fad. This is not a very healthy way of eating. It’s commonly called yoyo dieting and it can seriously mess with your physical and mental health.

The main gist of all these diets is to flip the energy balance so that you are burning more calories than you are eating. Even if you aren’t counting calories, removing an entire food group from your diet drastically reduces what you are able to eat. A chicken salad sandwich is around 500-600 calories, take the bread away and that reduces the calorie content down to 300ish. The same for meal replacement diets; you may not be counting the calories in your breakfast shake and soup lunch, but they are super low to allow

for your one “proper” meal a day.

Ways to tell your fad diet has taken an unhealthy turn • On “weigh day” you find yourself not eating or drinking until after you’ve been weighed, this could mean it’s 7pm before anything passes your lips.

• You feel lethargic, lack energy and generally feel a bit rubbish – all the time.

• You have a panic attack because you accidentally drank full fat coke.

• Hair and nails start shedding and snapping more.

• After a “perfect” day on your diet you find yourself sat on your kitchen floor at 2am eating your families leftover mashed potatoes that you “weren’t allowed”.

• You’ve lost intensity in your workouts because your body just hasn’t got anything to give.

There are many more red flags to an unhealthy diet, but these are just a few from both personal experience and that of my clients.

So, what should you do instead?

Start by using a food diary, this can be by hand or on an app like myfitnesspal. You don’t have to eat drastically low calories to lose weight, just 250-500 below your TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) will give you a steady weight loss of 1-2lbs a week and you CAN eat all the food groups and the occasional sweet treat without losing progress. For a week or 2, eat as normally as you can and track everything. Once you’ve seen how you like to eat, you can tweak your normal diet into being healthier and in a calorie deficit, whilst still eating food you like.

If you want long term weight loss you need to look at what you can do long term, and though some people are able to cast certain foods aside forever. you don’t have to be one of them. You can be fit and healthy and still be a foodie.

A MONTH FOR REMEMBERING November is the month for remembering. On 5th November, we remember Guy Fawkes and his Gunpower Plot. On 11th November, we remember all those who have served our country at times of conflict.

Before either of these well-known occasions is All Souls Day, 1st November, when we remember our own loved ones who have died and comfort one another in our grief. Here at St Helen’s we do this in a beautiful service which we call ‘A Time to Remember.’ We read out the names of those we’re remembering, light a candle for each of them, listen to some beautiful music and to God’s words of comfort and of strength.

In ‘normal times’ we gather in St Helen’s for this service. This year instead, we’re going to meet on Facebook. We’d love anyone who might find this service helpful to join us. WALKING IN ASHBY

WEST ASHBY This month, local resident, Mark White continues his series of local walks with an amble around west Ashby.

This is an easy, short, circular walk around west Ashby itself, half countryside and half residential areas, which should take you no more than 90 minutes. Our starting point is the southern entrance to Prestop Park Wood, on Moira Road, where you can park off-road.

To begin, go through the wooden kissing gate into the woodland and keep going straight. At the first meeting of multiple trails, go right, and we are heading towards the building sites of Bellway and Ashberry.

Keep on the right hand trail, via a number of grassy twists and turns, pass under the power lines, and at the metal fence line, turn right onto the public footpath.

Go between the metal fences and keep going until you come out onto Abbey Drive.

Cross Abbey Drive and continue on the footpath up to the playing field. There’s a football pitch here and a kids’ play area ahead of you. Skirt around to the left of the climbing frame and basketball court and take the second exit off the playing field. The first exit gets you to Churchill Close, but we want the second, between the hedge and a residential property, out on to the back end of Highfields Close. Carry on uphill to the end of the road, sweep around to the right, and then pass through a gap in another hedge, out on the Moira Road. Turn left and go uphill.

Head for the water tower on the other side of the road, which is visible on the skyline. The water tower is at the entrance to the cemetery, and it is now a private residence. On to the cemetery compound, though access is open to all, keep to the obvious footpaths.

Go downhill via occasional steps or slopes and head to the far right. You will end up at the cemetery’s car park, where there’s a large sign explaining how the cemetery began, and some interesting facts. Take some time to take in the local history here.

Downhill and to the right of the cemetery, there’s a very large L-shaped allotment garden, which has pedestrian exits out east to both Wilfred Gardens and Pithiviers Close. There’s also a gateway on the west side of the cemetery grounds, to a footpath from the allotments,

head for the next one. The gate here might already be open but if not, cross the 3rd stile into the 3rd field. Go carefully through the flocks of sheep.

Keep going straight to find the 4th stile and cross this one too. Look a little right of centre, and follow the track to find the 5th stile. From here, you can see Shellbrook Close houses in the distance. Our next stile/ fence/gate is to the left of those houses at the next hedgeline, so cross the field to that point. Cross the 6th stile and you’ll see 2 sets of narrow gauge tracks going into the distance. We want the right hand set, so follow that trail across the field. and that’s where we are headed. Turn around, and with the cemetery history sign behind you, go through the cemetery’s metal exit gate. Turn sharp right, walking uphill and away from the allotments all the way up to Moira Road again (facing a black & white house), where we turn left, going away from Ashby.

Now we have a ¼ mile walk on the pavement.

Go past the left turn for Beaumont Avenue, and take the next turn left/downhill into Philip Bent Road. Stay on the left hand side of the road, and at the bottom of the hill, you will find a green public footpath sign on Bernard Vann Crescent, pointing you towards the fields. Make sure you stay on the left hand side of the tarmac trail here.

Now we are heading into the fields. Look for the yellow marker posts as you cross the fields. Cross the first stile, from housing estate to farm field, and you’ll see the 2nd stile just 25 yards away. Cross the 2nd stile and

The next hedgeline has a farm gate and a kissing gate, go through and keep to the right. After about 150 yards, you will get to the final stile across the fields, stile No. 7.

Once across, you will be in Mile End Meadow, and you will be leaving the Ivanhoe Way and taking the Cross Britain Way instead. Go immediately right, heading back towards the Moira Road. You’ll travel along a well-mown trail, passing the rear gardens of nearby residences, and come out on to the Moira Road, directly opposite where this walk began.

AGE 20 OR 50+? MAINTAIN YOUR RETIREMENT FOCUS Research1 has revealed that almost a fifth of people aged 50 or over believe their retirement will be affected by the pandemic. Of these, a quarter say they have not been able to retire due to their finances, a fifth have had to use some of their retirement savings whilst out of work and a tenth have retired sooner than expected due to redundancy.

Playing catch up Separate data2 shows employees in certain industries, who were already struggling to save into a pension, could be particularly hard-hit and face a lifetime of ‘playing catch up’ with their retirement savings.

More than a quarter of those working in travel and the arts have not yet started saving into a pension, while two-thirds of retail workers are concerned they would soon run out of money if they did retire.

The impact of auto enrolment It’s not all doom and gloom, however. Thanks to auto enrolment, more than 10 million people have saved into a workplace pension, and those putting away the minimum has reached a record high. However, there are signs the positive impact of auto enrolment is starting to wane, with almost half of 22 to 29-year-olds still not doing enough to prepare for later life and many potentially facing retirement poverty.

It’s all about you It’s never too early or too late to get your retirement plan on track, whatever stage you’re at and whatever sector of the economy you work in. If

you’re younger, don’t allow any dips in income to impact your pension contributions if at all possible. Small, frequent contributions throughout your life add up and make a difference to the quality of your retirement.

If you’re older, you may be considering postponing retirement or if you lose your job, you might choose to retire earlier than you had originally intended. If you still have a job but your savings have been impacted, delaying retirement to give yourself more time to prepare may be an option.

Isabella the Almighty Superstar Isabella is an inspirational member of our Ashby community who lives with Hemipledgic cerebral palsy and uncontrollable Epilepsy. REFLECTING ON THE PACE OF LIFE When the clocks changed at the end of October, it came with the added bonus of an extra hour in bed. As we mark the end of British summer time we might start to reflect on the months that have passed.

We live in a non-stop world. Lockdown gave us the chance to slow down. Our diaries were suddenly empty. The business of our regular lives was gone. As the uncertainty of the pandemic continues, how can we embrace a slower, more peaceful outlook on life?

Jesus gave us all an invitation… “Come to me all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yolk upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

We are invited to live a life with Jesus by our side. To work with him and learn from him. If we accept the invitation, Jesus will walk with us helping to carry the weights of life that we bear.

So, if you are worried, busy and in need of rest, open a Bible and choose to include Jesus in your life.He wants us to spend time with him and have rest in him. How will you choose to use your time?

THIS MONTH’S RECIPE

This warming veggie stew will hit the spot on a cold autumn evening. Serve with steamed couscous or orzo pasta instead of rice, if preferred.

MAKES 4 S S E RV I N G YOU WILL NEED: • 1 tbsp olive oil • 2 onions, peeled and diced • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 1 tsp ground cumin • 2 tsp smoked paprika • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper • 2 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes • 2 tbsp tomato puree • 1 tsp brown sugar • 2 x 400g cans chickpeas, drained and rinsed • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • Cooked long grain rice, to serve • 2 tbsp freshly chopped parsley, to garnish TOP TIP: Stir a handful of baby spinach leaves in to the stew just before the end of cooking time, if liked.

SPICED CHICKPEA AND TOMATO STEW METHOD:

• Heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the onions and fry for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and golden, adding the garlic after 5 minutes.

• Stir in the spices and cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant then add the tomatoes, puree and sugar. Simmer gently for 15-20 minutes until the sauce has thickened, stirring occasionally.

• Stir in the chickpeas and simmer for a further 10 minutes. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve with cooked long grain rice and garnished with the parsley.

COUNTY LINES GANGS Leicestershire Police has arrested 40 people as part of enforcement activity to target and disrupt ‘County Lines’ drug dealers.

County Lines gangs export drugs into other areas of the country, often small towns, using dedicated mobile phone lines. They also exploit children and vulnerable adults to move and store drugs and money, sometimes using coercion, intimidation and violence.

During one week, officers executed 31 search warrants across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, as well as carrying out numerous stop searches at train stations and in hotspot areas across the neighbourhoods.

The force also ran three ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) operations looking to target vehicles suspected to be involved with county lines activity.

The searches saw more than £38,000 worth of cash being recovered, as well as class A and B drugs including a large number of cannabis plants.

Officers also seized two stolen vehicles, a number of knives, a stun gun and three imitation hand guns.

Chief Constable Simon Cole said: “Our work to tackle this issue is very much part of daily business and we will continue in our efforts to raise awareness of the issue and what our communities can do to help.

“Everyone has a part to play in tackling these issues, I encourage people to make sure they are aware of the signs and report any criminal activity of this nature by reporting online or calling 101.”

FIREWORKS PHOBIA If your pet becomes really distressed during bonfire season, it could be that they have ‘firework phobia’.

RSPCA animal behaviour expert Dr Samantha Gaines says: “Firework phobia in pets is a treatable condition and we recommend planning ahead to help your pet cope. For example, if your dog really seems to suffer, your vet may suggest referral to a clinical animal behaviourist to teach him/her to deal with the sounds, or suggest the use of diffusers which disperse calming chemicals into the room.”

It is also a good idea to provide your dog with a safe haven – perhaps under some furniture or in a cupboard – and it is best to get them used to this before the season starts. Choose somewhere quiet and help him to learn that being there is positive and that no harm will come to him. You can do this by giving him toys or a variety of chew toys.

Small animals that live outside should have lots of extra bedding so they can burrow. Some of their enclosure could be covered by a blanket for extra insulation

and soundproofing. If you are planning to bring them indoors just before the fireworks are likely to start, then introduce this a week or two in advance.

Finally if you are using fireworks yourself, try to stick to traditional celebration dates like Bonfire Night, when most animal owners will be expecting fireworks and will hopefully have made preparations to help their animals cope.
