Ashby Town Council News

Welcome to Ashby’s new Mayor!

The new Mayor of Ashby for 2022/23 has been announced as Councillor John Deakin. Taking over the reins from Councillor Rita Manning, John has masses of experience within local government and has been a Town Councillor for the Ivanhoe Ward since 2019.

An Ashby resident for over 20 years, John is keen to use his role as Mayor to help to promote Ashby as a place to live and to work, to encourage inward investment and help maintain a prosperous local economy. John explained; “I will do my utmost, with the support of my wife Karen, as the new Mayoress, to represent and promote our special town.”

Along with Karen, John is looking forward to representing and supporting residents, businesses and the voluntary sector in the town. Karen is well known locally for her many fundraising events held at the Ivanhoe Club

and during their term as Mayor and Mayoress their chosen charities will be Canine Partners in Osgathorpe, who provide assistance dogs for disabled people, and The Fire Fighters Charity.

Reflecting his interest in both local and national history you may also see John down at Ashby Museum where he has recently begun training as a Trainee Volunteer Custodian.

Finally, John commented; “It’s a real privilege to be serving the town in Platinum Jubilee year” and in fact one of his first events was the Jubilee street party on Market Street last month.

Welcome to

Interactive role play centres based in South Derbyshire Titchy Town and Hero Town are both indoor play villages designed especially for little ones up to 8 years of age. Children can freely explore the many different play zones in both villages. The villages are designed to allow children’s imagination to run wild whilst they role play in a safe environment.

How it works?

Both role play centres work on a pre-book via our website and pay on arrival basis with sessions lasting 90 minutes. On your first entry you will be issued a loyalty card and for every nine sessions you attend you will receive your 10th entry free of charge! Loyalty cards can be used across both sites. Outdoor Summer Fun at Calke With summer holidays fast approaching, now is the time to get outdoors and explore all Calke has to offer. You can sightsee Calke by two wheels every day from Monday 18th July or at weekends beforehand, from 10am to 4.30pm. We encourage all riders to enjoy a leisurely cycle along the Tramway Trail on a bright summer’s day and soak up the view from the comfort of your own saddle.

If you prefer to drink in the atmosphere of summer on foot, Calke has a variety of walks to keep you in touch with nature or provide an enjoyable adventure for the family dog. Dogs are welcome to enjoy all areas of the parkland, gardens and stableyards.

They can also join you on park guide tours, excluding the Deer Park, and garden tours provided they are on-lead.

So, stroll along the multi-use Tramway Trail and discover the history of the old horse-drawn route

that linked Ticknall to Ashby, enjoy the colourful gardens in full bloom or discover the stories of the walking trees and visit ‘The Old Man of Calke’ on a park guided tour, which takes place every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday at 11am or 2pm.

There are also plenty of family friendly activities, with something for everyone to enjoy. If you have little ones that are keen to learn how to ride a bike, we’re holding cycling sessions down at Calke Explore over the summer, teaching the basics of cycling. The first session is on Monday 18th July and is available to book for £8 per person; for more information, please visit our website.

If you’ve already surpassed the milestone of learning how to ride a bike, then the Garden of Imagination may be the holiday activity for you, taking place from Saturday 9th July all summer long in the walled kitchen garden. This year, a new pavilion of play will also feature in the walled kitchen, produced by Wild Rumpus.

Favourite elements of play are returning for 2022 to liven your senses, including a maze through the long grass, mown by our team of gardeners, hobby horse racing, a giant Jenga set and a theatre you can perform on, all to inspire your imagination.

Summertime Extravaganza!

This year has already seen so much going on around the country, especially with the wonderful celebrations over the jubilee weekend!

Unfortunately, the great British weather stopped our June craft fair in it’s tracks. As a charitable organisation, this has been a blow but, we continue, onwards and upwards!

Summer brings the promise of better weather and lots more fun things to do down at the furnace. Of course, we will continue with our monthly Furnace Craft Fairs on the first Sunday of the month and Furnace Motor Clubs on the second Tuesday of the month;

both of which are extremely popular and well worth a visit. On top of that, we are welcoming two outdoor theatre performances starting with the hugely popular HandleBards performing their take on Twelfth Night on Friday 22nd July, which will be hilarious, and The Wild Geese Company performing their family show, The Green Knight on Thursday 4th August.

On Sunday 31st July, we welcome everyone to a free to enter event for the community, our Seaside Pirate Day, complete with Punch and Judy, Fairground games, rides and a pirate treasure hunt . We will also be running our first ever Picnic in the Park on Sunday 14th August with music from Force Ten Big Band. This is free unless you want to reserve a VIP seat complete with homemade cream tea.

St Helens Church & Heritage Centre

Festival Of Achaeology at St Helen’s Church Do you walk past St Helen’s fairly regularly?

Or do you live on the far side of town and only remember its existence when the bells ring out for Sunday service or a summer wedding? Some of the buildings on Market Street are pretty old, but there’s been a church on the site of St Helen’s for almost a thousand years and the present building dates from the 1400s.

Across the way, in the Heritage Centre garden, archaeologists found a Mesolithic microlith, which is several thousand years older than the church.

It’s mindblowing, isn’t it? People have been here, in Ashby, for thousands of years and we’re just the current generation of Ashbeians.

St Helen’s is opening its doors to the Festival of Archaeology this July. Actually, our doors are always open during daylight hours, but this July we’re offering something special. We’re hosting a children’s archaeological dig event on Monday 25th July and free guided tours of our amazing site on Friday 8th and Tuesday 26th July.

If you’ve never been into the church or Heritage Centre, now’s your opportunity. Come and learn the stories of some of the people who’ve lived in our town over the centuries. There will be refreshments too! What’s more, lots of places across the county are opening their doors this July. Home exercise for older adults For those wanting to work out in the comfort of their own home, there are many ways to do this often with minimal equipment or without any at all. Household objects such as tins of beans or full milk cartons can be used to add resistance to workouts for example.

The NHS website has some great links to home based activity.

Video sites such as Youtube also have an abundance of virtual exercise sessions which may be of use.

Below I am going to go over some simple exercises that can be done at home to increase strength, balance and independence: Sit to Stand A very simple exercise that just requires a chair.

The aim of this exercise is to start seated and raise to standing and then lower back down to seated in a controlled manner. This should be then repeated up to 10 times. This exercise will strengthen the lower body specifically the quadriceps which are the large muscles at the front of the legs.

Calf Raise Using a sturdy surface for support the aim is to raise up on to the toes and then slowly lower back to the floor in a controlled manner. This is then repeated up to 15 times. This exercise will help to strengthen the calf muscles.

Wall Press Ups Place hands at chest level against a wall. Keep the back straight and bend the elbows so the body moves towards the wall. Then slowly return back to the start position. Aim for 10 repetitions.

This exercise will strengthen the chest, shoulders and back of the arms.

Arm Curls Stand with feet hip width apart. With palms facing forwards and holding weights or filled water bottles, bend the elbows to bring the hands towards the shoulder. Pause at the top

and then slowly lower the weights back to the start position. This exercise will strengthen the front of the arms. Repeat 10 times.

Heel To Toe Walk This is a simple exercise which can help to improve balance. The aim is to stand upright and put one foot in front of the other, then the other foot and gradually take steps forward in a slow controlled manner. Keep eyes fixed forward throughout and ensure there is support available when performing any balance exercise.

Step Ups This exercise strengthens the muscles in the lower body and also helps improve balance.

Ensure there is support available when doing this exercise. Simply place one foot on a step, then follow with the other. Then step down and repeat 10 times.

Jim’s Tractor Run & Family Fun Day This fun packed family event returns on Sunday 24th July and begins with the grand tractor run heading off from Roecliffe Farm on Leicester Road at 11am. The tractors will make their way through Market Street, out to Blackfordby and return to the Bath Grounds around 11.45am for display.

Entry to all the attractions on the Bath Grounds is free and there will be so much to enjoy. As well as the tractors, a variety of vintage vehicles will be on show to admire. It’s not too late to register to bring your own vehicle along – sign up at www.ashbytowncouncil.gov.uk/council_events/ jims-tractor-run-family-fun-day The kids will have lots to do, with a free climbing wall, arts and crafts with Creation Station, funfair rides, archery and bouncy castles. They can even try their hand at learning circus skills or tree climbing.

As well as over 30 stalls there will be a choice of food and drink with a licensed bar and an ice cream van.

The Phoenix Children’s Foundation will be bringing along their ponies and Ashby fire service will be on hand and doing a hot oil fire demonstration.

The massively popular Fun Dog Show also makes a welcome return this year with a new fun obstacle course included. Does your dog have what it takes to win a rosette?

The fun continues through to 4pm and it’s all for a good cause; local charity Hospice Hope will have a stall there on the day and collection buckets on the entrances.

Fitness Tips with Fitness Republic

Reaching the milestone…

Last month I reached the big milestone of being 50. I realised the importance of keeping fit at a very early age, but I can honestly say that it feels even more important now than ever. When you’re young you tend to have an abundance of energy, you can shrug off problems, injuries, and a bad diet easily, but now, not so much. Now I need to create a very balanced and sensible workout regime that will combat these advancing years. Just turning up at the gym and slamming a few weights about is simply not going to cut it.

There need’s to be a much more thoughtful and careful process.

Volume and Frequency These days, muscle building is a good deal harder and slower. So, I have to consider the variables a lot more. Frequency - how often I train and volume - how much work I do on that particular session. Increasing the number of reps – volume – is a good way to progress steadily.

Technique As you get older your muscles, joints and connective tissues are a little more delicate than they once were. So, getting technique and range of movement right is very important before you load them with heavier weights.

Should we always progress by lifting heavier?

This is a great way to progress, but it’s not the only way, and as an older trainer, lifting heavy all the time is definitely not recommended. You can make your workout harder by slowing down the exercises, adding more reps and increasing the range of movement. You will feel better and improve your strength.

Recovery The older I have got the more I have had to pay attention to recovery times. You must learn to listen to your body. Constant training will take its toll, so schedule in more recovery days, as rest is so important to progression.

Flexibility A regular stretch routine will help to keep the muscles and joints in tip top condition, and massively reduce the risk of injuries. More and more people (men included) are turning to Pilates or Yoga classes to assist in this area.

Nutrition Feeding your body properly has always been important, but it’s crucial as you get older.

Fuelling yourself with the right nutrients will make a huge difference to your workouts, and indeed your everyday life. Getting enough protein for keeping the muscle, enough carbs for fuelling your workouts and enough good fats for keeping your joints in top condition.

To sum up, exercise is important as a younger person, but even more important as an older one.

I for one want to keep as fit and as healthy as possible right into my 80’s and beyond!

Self help to staying mentally healthy These are challenging times with rising energy prices, the increased cost of living and the difficulties in Ukraine. Similarly, whilst the Summer can be fun, it can also create more stress for families who have to juggle childcare or who can’t afford a holiday. It’s more important than ever to control what we can to keep ourselves mentally healthy.

It is useful to get into a routine to keep yourself mentally healthy. Some of the following strategies can help you to do this.

• If you are prone to having down days then keeping a daily journal will help. This can include writing down three positive things that have happened (however, small) on a daily basis so you get a sense of achievement.

• Ensure you have 20 minutes a day of calming activity such as sitting reading, meditation, yoga or going for a slow walk, or just sitting doing nothing (which is still doing something!),

• Call or meet a friend on a regular basis. If you are feeling overwhelmed ask for help from a friend or family member.

• Spend time outdoors, • Ensure you drink plenty of water as dehydration can cause tiredness.

• Finally create a relaxing bedtime routine to include 30 minutes of not watching a screen.

Tiny gardens can bear fruit Did you know that a large tub can support a small shrub and even a small tree which is on a dwarf rootstock? This means you can potentially have fruit trees close to your kitchen door even if your garden is paved.

A patio fruit tree is a great way of having a productive tree in a small space. I suggest a pot of no less than 50cm in diameter. You may get less fruit than a tree planted in open ground and the life span may be limited to 10 years, but even so it is worth doing. Fruit trees in pots must be regularly watered as rainfall will not be enough.

For pears and apples to pollinate there needs to be two types of cultivars. Good genetically dwarf apple varieties include Maloni Billy, Maloni Lilly, Maloni Sally and Garden Red, all of which are dessert apples. For small root stock apples varieties include Fiesta, Greensleeves, Kidds Orange Red and Sunset which are dessert apples and ‘Arthur Turner’ Howgate Wonder and Lane’s Prince Albert, which are cookers. As for pears, a good one is ‘Garden Pearl’ and a patio

Similarly, there are genetically dwarf and grafted cherries, plums and gages available. Slightly less common fruit trees such as peaches, apricots and nectarines when grown in pots can easily be covered in winter, helping to protect them from the cold and reducing the chance of fungal diseases setting in. The best fruiting tree for a pot is a fig, and the restricted root growth actually helps the production of figs.

In terms of compost, use a John Innes No 3 and make sure the pot has holes for drainage and some broken crocks or stones in the bottom to aid drainage. Tubs will need regular watering, and fertiliser a couple of times a year will help your plants, and every three years or so re-potting will be necessary.

Surgery News Appointment System We are offering a mix of telephone and face-toface appointments. We would like to remind you that we are only able to deal with one problem per appointment.

For appointments that are booked in advance, our reception will offer a telephone appointment in the first instance as there are plenty of things that we can deal with over the phone. If you wish to be seen face-to-face this is available, please ask.

For our on the day duty screen, this is managed using telephone triage. We have an on-call GP and Nurse Practitioner who will call you back.

The on-call GP will also monitor the duty screen and actively triage patients:• Those with a more urgent medical need will be prioritised • Non-urgent medical problem which can wait, reception will ring you back and arrange a book in advance appointment

• For issues which are more appropriate to assess face-to-face, you will be contacted and asked to come down to the practice • You may be actively signposted to another service e.g. the community pharmacy as they are the most appropriate service/clinician to deal with your medical need • You may be booked in with another clinician in the practice who has the most appropriate skills to deal with your query.

Heather Scarecrow Festival is back!

After a two-year break due to Covid precautions, Heather Scarecrow Festival is back. Residents of Heather are raring to go, especially newcomers to the village who have been impatient for the opportunity to get involved. They are once again inviting local schools and nurseries to enter scarecrows with the chance to win some amazing prizes from their sponsor Polydron.

The aim of the festival is to raise funds for village groups whilst providing an affordable day out for visitors. As well as amazing scarecrows, you can expect inflatables, stalls, refreshments and more, depending on which days you visit and hopefully a few great surprises.

This year’s event will take place from 11am on Sunday 31st July until 6pm on Sunday 7th August. As always, there will be ample free parking and the popular tea room at Heather St John’s Football Club, LE67 2QJ with additional parking at Heather Village Hall, LE67 2RE. Scarecrow Guides will be on sale at both venues as well as the village shop, pubs, garage and Cattow’s Farm.

Once again local groups and charities have been invited to make use of the village hall to raise

funds for their organisation whilst also selling Scarecrow Guides and providing additional toilet and refreshment facilities.

Confirmed groups include Feed the Need Coalville Foodbank, Ibstock Historical Society, Ibstock Community Choir and Hospice Hope. Do pay them a visit to find out more about the groups, how you can get involved. or how they can support you.

Details of the activities taking place at the hall each day will be shown in the Scarecrow Guide and announced on the Facebook Page - www. facebook.com/HeatherScarecrowFestival .

During the final weekend there will be additional stalls and face painting at the Football Club and maybe a few extra surprises.

Ibstock Historical Society will be displaying photographs and information showing some of Heather’s history. With so much going on, you may prefer to visit Heather on more than one occasion throughout Scarecrow week and make the most of everything that is going on at a more leisurely pace.

Ashby Sport

Focus On: Merlin Field Archers Merlin Field Archers are a Field Archery Club based near Ashby. They were established in August 2017 by Merlin Archery and became an independent club in November 2019. The club is associated to the English Field Archery Association (EFAA) (Governing Body), but also host occasional competitions for Archery GB.

Distances range from 10 yards to 80 yards and are permanently marked out. Merlin Field Archers host a selection of shoots including monthly classification shoots, National EFAA shoots, field competitions and host external club shoots. If your archery club is interested in trying out Field archery, please get in touch.

They are based in the Staunton Harold Estate near Ashby. The club has a practice range, permanent club house and a 28 – target course.

New archers are welcome to join the club. The first club beginners course will be held on Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st July. Any new member to the club will also receive an introduction to the course and the EFAA, which includes a safety brief. The club is open 7 days a week to members.

They welcome a range of bow types as directed by the EFAA including recurve, compound, barebow, longbow and traditional bows.

Facts about Field Archery • A typical shot on a “Field” round is set at 50yds.

• The ideal Field Archery course will be set in woods with steep slopes and as many variations in ground as can be achieved safely.

• Field Archery is without doubt more physical than target archery and demands high levels of concentration with a wider spectrum of skills.

• The wide variety of terrain, shooting conditions and rounds are the true attraction of field archery.

• Archers follow the course in groups of between two and four.

The humble bumblebee (and friends) Why we all need to make a beeline to our buzzing friends, who are pivotal to the future of our planet.

The bee population (bumblebees and the 25,000 other recorded species that exist), have been too regularly dismissed in the past as simply the overseers of pollination… and of course useful if you want to spread a bit of honey on your toast.

Yet the reliance both we and the wider environment have on bees moves them straight to the upper echelons of some of the planet’s most valuable entities.

Consider that at least 30% of the world’s crops and 90% of all plants require cross-pollination to spread and thrive, and suddenly our perception of bees takes a different slant.

Unfortunately, bee populations around the world are in decline. Climate change causes some flowers to bloom earlier or later than usual, meaning bees have fewer food sources at the start of the season. They suffer habitat loss from development and a lack of bee-friendly flowers, and some colonies collapse due to plants and seeds treated with pesticides.

The good news is that protecting these little wonders is not just good for the environment, but a joy in itself. Several organisations run bee initiatives; from Bee Walks, in which volunteers traverse set routes to map out observations of bee activity; to community and education groups at libraries, stalls and fetes that raise money and awareness.

You can also create a buzz in your own back garden, by laying a foundation to encourage bees into the space, where what’s around them will thrive: Bee-friendly plants Use bee-friendly plants, patio pots, herbs in a planter, with hanging baskets and crocuses creating colour and helping bees flourish.

Gracious greens Consider adding fruit and veg to your garden, where possible; bees will be instantly attracted.

An annual affair Try to keep planting throughout the season in order to provide food and shelter for bees. They actually require nectar and pollen across all four seasons, while keeping the grass long offers great refuge.

Arrest the pesticides Obviously, removing or greatly reducing the use of pesticides in your garden will have a hugely beneficial effect on the bee population, so don’t be afraid to throw away that ‘bug gun’ and let nature do its bit.

Body Matters

Cycling Recreational cycling is very popular. It is a great way to exercise and get fresh air.

It is also fantastic for our cardiovascular fitness and general wellbeing. Here are some common cycling niggles and things you can do to help prevent them.

Neck Pain When cycling we hold our head and neck in a relatively static position for a long period of time. If our body is not used to this static posture the muscles fatigue quickly, causing pain and stiffness in our neck and shoulders.

Exercises, stretching and / or treatment to improve neck and upper back mobility can often help improve the flexibility of these areas and can relieve this pain.

Handle Bar Palsy (Ulnar Neuritis) Many cyclists experience pain and tingling in their hand and weakness of grip. This is caused by compression of the ulnar nerve as it passes through the wrist joint. It is common in cyclists due to the position of the wrist and the handlebars.

If you suffer with this, altering your grip position more frequently when riding can help.

Also exercises and /or treatment to improve hand and wrist flexibility can relieve the tension on the ulnar nerve.

Hip and Knee Pain Most commonly hip pain is usually caused by tightness in the hip flexors due to prolonged sitting (at a desk) or cycling. An imbalance in the muscles of the thigh can also affect the tension on the knee and cause pain at the kneecap (patella).

Making sure your saddle heigh is correct is imperative for good knee and hip function whilst cycling. www.roadcyclinguk.com – provides some great tips for a beginner on how to set your saddle height correctly.

A common method to check your saddle height is the heel to pedal saddle test. If you are experiencing knee or hip pain, be careful not to over train and build in rest days.

Lower Back Pain This is very common in cyclists – often accompanied by a feeling of stiffness when getting up from sitting. It is caused again by sustained posture and often worse when there is hip stiffness involved. People who work in offices or who spend a lot of hours sitting are also more prone to hip stiffness Again, check your saddle height. Exercise and/ or treatment to improve your hip and lower back flexibility can also help with this.

Protecting your home The Property Protection Trust (PPT) is a Life Interest Trust incorporated into a Will which allows the testator to give a lifetime interest in their share of the main residence (or the whole of the beneficial interest in the main residence if solely owned) to a beneficiary of their choice, this beneficiary would be called the Life Tenant. Giving them a lifetime interest means that the Life Tenant will never own the property or share of the property that is held in trust absolutely, however they will be entitled to lifetime enjoyment of the property and any income which may arise (i.e. if they decide to let the property out). When the Life Tenant no longer has a right to benefit from the property due to their death or by termination of the trust, the property is subsequently passed to the ‘remainderman’ beneficiary/ies as described in the Will.

Another reason a PPT may be suitable is if there are concerns over asset preservation should long term care be required in the future. the ‘first death’ by passing the deceased’s share of the property into trust rather than directly into the estate of the survivor. This means that if the survivor requires long term care in the future then they do not have the deceased’s share of property calculated as part of their wealth, but they do have a lifetime interest in it so they can enjoy it as if it is their own.

It’s always worth seeking advice from a suitably qualified adviser to see if this type of planning is suitable for you and help set things up for you.

In what circumstances would a PPT be appropriate for you?

One of the most common reasons for the use of a PPT is to protect against what is known as ‘sideways disinheritance’.

Sideways disinheritance is simply the common act of the spouse/partner of the deceased remarrying or recoupling and deciding to favour the new family in their Will. This

Before we leave on holiday there’s always so much to do. In the excitement of going away it’s easy to forget something important. How often have you heard of people arriving at the airport without their passport? it’s always a good idea to make a list to help us plan and ensure we don’t forget anything important.

This also rings true in the rest of our lives. It’s easy to forget something important – we often have so much to think about and do. Sometimes the most important things get pushed aside by how busy we are, even pushed so far that they disappear from our lives altogether?

The Bible recognises this and the way things can swamp our good intentions. In the parable of the

sower Jesus uses the example of a man sowing seed to show different ways we can react to hearing God’s word. In one of the examples the seed starts to grow but then weeds grow around it, and it dies. We need to be careful that our lives aren’t like that. We must give God’s word the proper focus it needs, allowing it space and time to grow – not crowded out by the other things that compete for our time.

Time and space are precious – sometimes we need to stop, take a breath and make a list of the really important things in our lives.

Question Time with FISHERS SOLICITORS Do you need a settlement agreement?

We’ve seen a lot of change in the job market over the past couple of years. Employees have been increasingly willing to leave a job behind if they’re unhappy and we’ve all had to adapt to new ways of working. If a dispute has arisen in your workplace, a settlement agreement could be the best way forward.

What’s a settlement agreement?

A settlement agreement is a legally binding document that’s created to end a dispute between employer and employee without the need to go to an employment tribunal. They’re often used when an employee is leaving work, but they can also be useful when there’s another kind of dispute.

How do we agree on terms?

The terms of your agreement need to be agreed upon between employer and employee. This could be a simple process. If your employment is ending your employer could make you a financial settlement offer. If you accept it the settlement agreement will set out what you’ve agreed. However, it can be more complicated than that.

Equally, you don’t have to have a financial settlement. The agreement might have been needed because of something that needed to change for you to stay in your job. Your employer is also legally required to contribute to your independent professional advice from a solicitor.

The settlement agreement document will need to set out what the dispute was and what you’ve agreed. Sometimes, a settlement agreement can be offered by an employer if they’ve come across something that could lead to a tribunal claim in the future.

As an employer, it’s also a good idea to get your own legal advice to make sure you’ve covered everything. The tax rules around settlement agreements can be complex. You may also want to discuss the possibility of a claim going to the employment tribunal and what the outcome of that might be when you’re deciding what offer to make.

The Bridge, working with local communities to tackle the escalating homelessness crisis Mounting energy bills, rising food prices and the lasting impact of the covid pandemic, mean that more people across the region are facing the very real prospect of homelessness.

Local charity; The Bridge (East Midlands), based in Loughborough, strives to help families and individuals who find themselves in crisis by providing them with specialist housing-related support, advice and assistance.

The immediate pressures of the cost-of-living crisis is being witnessed daily by their frontline workers.

Mary on their Young People & Families team recently met a young single mum who is reaching crisis point. “The mum was on pre-payment meters for her gas and electric, where there were mounting debts of £300. It was distressing to see a young mum worrying how she would be able to feed and bathe her children. This situation is equally sad as I know she is not alone in struggling with the rising costs – it will only get worse”.

Between April 2020 and March 2021, the charity received 6,202 referrals – an increase of 39% compared to the same period the year before.

Thankfully, they were able to prevent or resolve homelessness for around 92% of clients – but this life changing work has only been possible because of the support and generosity of local people.

The Young People & Families team will continue to ensure the mum, and many others, are accessing support to help with budgeting and ultimately aiming to prevent the family’s homelessness. However, to continue offering this life changing support to those who urgently need it, they need your help. Their essential core costs just to keep the organisation running are over £500,000 each year- so they desperately rely on the support of the local community to prevent and overcome homelessness, together.

The Bridge was first established as a Christmas Shelter during the 1993 festive period. It soon became clear that there was an all year round need for their services and so, in 1995, The Bridge’s first Housing Advice Centre was opened.

The National Forest

The National Forest Trek – 75 miles, 3 days, plenty of fun!

Beacon Hill in Charnwood is the starting point of the National Forest Trek, now in its second year and taking place from Friday 9th to Sunday 11th September along the 75-mile National Forest Way. The route reveals the best the National Forest has to offer across a wide variety of landscapes. You’ll explore areas you might know and plenty of hidden gems along the way too. You’ll pass through the almost primeval ancient landscapes of Charnwood with its rocky outcrops, rolling hills and parkland, take in iconic views and visit some of the best wildlife spots in the region. The trek will take you through to places steeped in fascinating industrial heritage across the heart of the Forest, showcasing the extraordinary landscape transformation that’s taken place over the last three decades, where open cast mining has been replaced by newly planted woodland, thriving wetlands and colourful wildflower meadows. Finally, with the end nearly in sight, you’ll take in the pretty villages of Needwood before an atmospheric and emotive finish at the

striking National Memorial Arboretum, a place of reflection and remembrance.

The National Forest Trek will be an exhilarating way to challenge yourself this year – training over the summer, then undertaking one, two or the whole three-day adventure in the company of your friends, family or colleagues. You’ll have a lot of fun enroute, and you can use the experience to raise funds for a cause that’s important to you if you wish. The whole weekend is supported: everything is taken care of, with great food, drink and snacks provided throughout, options to camp along the way with transfers for both you and your luggage should you chose to walk the entire route. We’re not saying it will be easy but imagine the thrill as you soak up the wonderful atmosphere, spurred on by your fellow trekkers and our supportive team.

Cooking safely • Avoid leaving children in the kitchen alone when cooking on the hob. Keep matches and saucepan handles out of their reach to keep them safe.

• Make sure saucepan handles don’t stick out – so they don’t get knocked off the stove.

• Take care if you’re wearing loose clothing – this can easily catch fire.

• Keep tea towels and cloths away from the cooker and hob.

• Double check the cooker is off when you’ve finished cooking.

• Take care if you need to leave the kitchen whilst cooking, take pans off the heat or turn them down to avoid risk.

Dog days The four-step guide to ensuring your canine pal can travel abroad when you do.

ONE Visit your vet at least one month before travelling to ensure that your dog is microchipped and has a valid rabies vaccination.

You will also need to obtain an Animal Health Certificate – this can only be issued by an official veterinarian, so find a practice and book your appointment in advance.

The certificate is valid for 10 days before entry must be made to EU or Northern Ireland, and expires in four months, by which time you must have returned Great Britain.

TWO Before you leave, ensure you update your holiday details on your pet’s microchip record, and check to see if your pet insurance covers you for your trip. If it doesn’t, take out additional insurance in exactly the same way you would for family members.

BACK IN THE DRIVING SEAT Many people have used the last couple of years to make positive life changes.

Three in five people have questioned what is important in life, while half feel their priorities have changedi. Two in five credit the pandemic with encouraging them to build more long-term savings.

However, one in four now feel less comfortable about coping with unforeseen events than they did before the pandemic. Likewise, one in five feel less secure about their financial future, rising to one in four among the 35 to 44 age group.

Thirties and forties Although 35- to 44-year-olds are the largest cohort to face disruption to their retirement plans, they are also the most likely to feel compelled to save more as a result of the pandemic (54%). While 14% of the same age group fear they may have to push back their retirement date, one in ten have been able to put extra money towards their retirement because of lockdown.

Life on hold Meanwhile, more than half of UK adults have

suspended or cancelled a planned life event during the pandemic. Of those affected, 16% put off starting a new job, 13% postponed a house purchase, 12% re-considered plans to start a new business, 10% stopped trying for a baby and 10% delayed a wedding.
