Welcome to our August issue. Here in the office this month is all about holidays and taking some well-earned time off to relax and rejuvenate before the kids start their new term and we begin our pre-Christmas planning (yes, I mentioned Christmas already!)

In the meantime, this month’s issue, as always, is packed with news and updates. It’s fantastic to see the return of Ashby Venture Theatre after such a long break, find out what they have planned on page 14. Ashby Town Council also have a summer of community events scheduled – see page 18. Ashby Sport celebrate the success of their first ever Fun Day and we look forward to upcoming community events such as Ashby’s Big Tidy Up. So if you’re taking a break from work to find time to relax with friends and loved ones this month – have fun and let’s keep our fingers crossed for some sunshine!

Rain did not stop play at the first ever Ashby Sport Fun Day! On Saturday 3rd July Ashby Sport held their inaugural Fun Day down on Ashby Bath Grounds. Ashby Town Council News

Summer events We are so excited to be able to finally schedule community events again and we have lots planned. Here is just a taster of upcoming events for your diary……

Ashby Artisan Markets Ashby Artisan Markets, organised by North West Leicestershire District Council, began in July and will be held on North Street car park on the third Saturday of each month between 9am and 2pm. There will be a variety of stalls selling local produce including food, beverages, crafts and more. Pop along to see what’s on offer.

Ashby Proms in The Park Ashby Proms in The Park is new for 2021 and will take place on Saturday 28th August. This promises to be a fun filled event for all the family to enjoy. With delicious food, thirst-quenching drinks and unforgettable live music acts it will be an evening not to be missed. Gates open at 4pm, the event starts at 5pm and runs through to 10pm.

All VIP tables are now sold but there are tickets available for you to bring your own picnic blanket or chairs. See www.ashbypromsinthepark.co.uk/ Six Weeks of Summer Every Friday & Saturday until 28th August a variety of performers will provide live

entertainment in the area outside Boots on Market Street, Ashby. There will be three thirty minute performances running throughout the day from 11am to 3.30pm. Come and enjoy the show and soak up the summer atmosphere.

Queen’s Platinum Jubilee – Street Party Looking ahead to next summer, the Events and Tourism Committee have agreed to hold a street party in Market Street to celebrate the joyous occasion of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The event will be held on Sunday 5th June 2022.

As with previous events numbers will need to be limited. To ensure everyone has a fair chance of getting a table at the event a register of interest will need to be completed and returned then names will be drawn out to find out who the lucky winners are.

Fitness Tips with Fitness Republic

Are they too young?

Hi, I’m Connor, I’m a level 3 trainer here at Fitness Republic and I wanted to talk about how to start training in a gym at a young age, the benefits of it and also to put any worries that parents / guardians may have, to rest.

From past experience, starting training at the gym was one of the best things I ever did. I first started doing some sort of gym based exercise when I was about 12-13 years old, then at 16 I started looking at making it a career. It was what I loved doing, and so that’s just what I did!

Most young people are confused where to start in the gym. I’d advise anyone around this age to start with some basic compound exercises such as squats, chest press, shoulder press and

deadlift. In my experience I have found this leads on to a better understanding of other exercises, how the body moves and works, and most importantly technique.

Gym training can help build and maintain healthy bones and muscles. Bone mass increases during a young person’s development and exercise is an essential part of this bone growth. Exercise won’t really affect the actual lengthening that occurs in the bone, but it will increase bone width and strength. Strength training, using weights, at the appropriate level and intensity, with the correct technique and supervision, can be extremely beneficial. Injuries only tend to occur with poor form or techniques and methods, such as trying to lift too much too soon. Using sensible weights and higher reps like 10-15 is much better than going heavier and doing less reps.

I’ve had many young people, both my age and younger, ask “What should I eat?” or “Should I be taking supplements?” My answer is always, eat well! Your diet at a young age doesn’t have to be very strict, so by all means eat the foods you love in moderation, make sure you have sufficient amounts of protein, carbs and healthy fats. This can be done easily and without supplements.

It’s also a good idea to have a routine, even if you’re 14-16 years old. Start now and work your training around school or college. It can be

a great way to release stress and help you to focus, and Fitness Republic is such a comfortable and safe place to be. At the gym, the coaches are here to support young people on all the equipment. Soon I realised that was not the case and Marcus took me through all the basic exercises, correcting my form and giving me a simple but efficient workout plan. Gradually, through changing my diet appropriately and training correctly with the assistance of the team, I have felt more and more comfortable in myself both mentally and physically. Around 19 months later I’m 28lbs heavier and happier in myself than I’ve ever been and owe it all to Fitness Republic and their team.”

Ashby’s Big Tidy Up

Help keep Ashby clean and tidy Saturday 4th September 2021 Volunteers are required to help with ‘Ashby’s Big Tidy Up’.

In association with NWLDC Street Action Team, Ashby Town Council, Love Ashby Litter Picking Heroes and organised by Ashby Hastings Rotary Club it is possible once more for us to join together to keep our town tidy.

If they have the necessary equipment volunteers who wish to be independent can start litter picking from home and work their way to the Leisure Centre. However, the Ashby Tidy has 10 starting locations for groups, who will be loaned all the necessary equipment at the start at 1.45pm. No matter where they begin, all litter picking volunteers will be invited to assemble at Hood Park Leisure Centre at the end for free refreshments and to share their experiences. (from 3.00pm) Trash for Treasure - youngsters will also be able to exchange all the rubbish they collect for gold chocolate coins and other goodies.

Anyone can volunteer • No experience is required and all necessary equipment will be supplied.

• Under 16’s must be accompanied by an adult.

• Team leaders will direct operations on the day and guide all volunteers.

• Please wear suitable outdoor clothing and be prepared for any weather.

Why volunteer?

Local Walk with Liz Roberts

Melbourne Pool This month we start our walk at Melbourne Pool – a very picturesque spot with ducks, geese, coots and moorhens. The paths are generally very well marked, dogs may need to be on lead in places. If you fancy refreshments after your walk there are tea rooms close to the car park. This is a lovely walk which took me around an hour and a half.

We start from the car park by Melbourne Hall, just off Church Street in Melbourne. Follow the tarmac driveway which leads through a stone gateway to reach Melbourne Pool. Continue along this driveway with the water on your right.

Keep straight on as the driveway becomes more of a track and passes by a footpath that leads off at the end of the pool. A short way after this you come to another public footpath, marked by a wooden post, also leading off to the right.

Turn right to follow this path through the gate into a field with an obvious path across it. At the far side, cross a stile to the next field where you continue over a third stile. The path follows the edge of the wood for a while before going around the field edge to drop down to a stile on your left.

You can now see a farm off to your right. The path is well marked with yellow arrows as it goes alongside a fence before passing through a gateway to join a tree lined stretch of the grass driveway leading from the farm. Just before the end of this avenue turn left at a yellow footpath post to go down over a field and reach the strip of woodland in the valley.

The path crosses a stile and then a narrow wooden plank bridge over a pretty stream before climbing out of the woods, where you go over a stile and steeply up the side of a field. At the top is another narrow strip of woodland, the path through is quite steep with steps carved up to a stile leading into a large open field near the hilltop. Whilst crossing this look out for views of Breedon church in the distance.

At the far side of this field the path meets with a bridleway – you need to turn left along the field edge. Pass a gateway and keep to the bottom of the next field with the hedge and ditch on your right. After a while you’ll meet the drive up to Park Farm on your left - keep ahead on the bridleway (which is now wider with a hard surface).

Take the path to the left, up the field towards the buildings of Park Farm. At the top of the hill cross the driveway and go over the stile opposite. The path drops downhill, going diagonally to the right to reach a gateway with a cattle grid across it.

Ignoring a path off to your right, go around the gateway onto the main track which will shortly lead you back to Melbourne Pool.

Amazing August at St Helen’s We have lots to celebrate at St Helen’s this August. After a successful re-opening in June & July with our ‘Isolation Creation’ exhibition, showcasing artwork created in lockdown, our fabulous children’s workshops are back.

‘Music, Makaton & Mammatt’ is on Wednesday 18th August. Common myths about lower back pain There is a lot of different advice out there about how best to deal with lower back pain. So we’re going to blow the lid off some of the most common myths and help you get back on track with your recovery.

Myth 1 I hurt my back, so now I will probably have back pain for the rest of my life.

Wrong! You can get bad episodes but these do not have to be disabling forever. If you do start having back pain, seek help ASAP to get the advice you need to manage and prevent the pain.

Myth 2: I have back pain so I should stay in bed and rest?

Nope! Whilst avoiding aggravating activities will definitely help, returning to usual activities is important to aiding your recovery – prolonged inactivity is generally unhelpful and as long as exercise is increased gradually, you can actually reduce the risk of future pain. Talk to your Physio about a long term plan.

Myth 3: The more back pain I have, the more my spine is damaged.

Incorrect! More pain doesn’t always mean more damage and it is dependent on a whole manner of different factors, including previous problems, fitness and coping strategies.

Myth 4: My back pain must be due to something being out of place.

Untrue! There are a very small amount of people who will experience some change in their spinal

alignment but that doesn’t necessarily increase the risk of lower back pain Myth 5: I need a scan or x-ray for my back pain.

Inaccurate! Only a very small number of these tests actually contribute to better management of the problem. Clinical examinations are usually enough to identify the problems on the majority of people.

Myth 6 I need an operation to cure my back pain.

False! Surgery is a higher risk treatment and so is only used if there is no other option available to the individual. The vast majority of people with lower back pain can manage their problem by staying active (with advice), developing a better understanding of the problem and learning how not to aggravate it. This should help them continue their usual daily tasks, without having to resort to surgery.

Ashby Youth for Christ 100k Your Way How would you like to complete a journey of 100 kilometres around Ashby? Keep reading. Go on. Between September 25th and October 25th Ashby Youth for Christ are giving people the opportunity to complete a 10km circuit of Ashby, 10 times.

It can be done in whatever size chunks works for you - maybe 3 or so kilometres a day, maybe as a team completing 1 lap each. You can do it whenever is convenient for you and utilising whatever mode of transport you can legally use on pavements. The route is small wheel friendly and has already been completed by push chair, scooter, roller skates, wheelchair, wheelbarrow, and roller blades, whatever works for you.

Ashby Youth For Christ will provide the 10km route card. This comes with guidance for each leg of the journey together with points of interests

along the way to keep you going.

They are also having a special launch day on Saturday 25th September when teams from Ashby Youth For Christ will be completing a total of 100km afloat along the River Trent. This will be either on stand up paddleboards or kayaks.

Any money raised from the event will go towards work with teenage girls in Ashby, the work supports girls in developing a positive self esteem and emotional well being.

In Your Garden

Attenborough Arboretum I recently learnt of the superb Attenborough Arboretum in Oadby which is part of the University of Leicester. The five acre site in Knighton, Leicester was opened by Sir David Attenborough in 1996 - hence the name.

This arboretum, along with the University Botanic Garden (separate location) is used for scientific research and teaching. Both are open to the public and have disabled access.

At the arboretum, the tree planting sequence shows the timeline in which native trees arrived as far back as 10,000 years ago. It’s really interesting, showing that the first trees here were the Scots Pine, Juniper, Hazel and Birch. The research to identify the sequencing is largely based upon fossil pollen and shows the importance of global diversity. The information at the arboretum explains the definition of native plants and how humans and animals have, since the last ice age, introduced ‘alien’ plants to the British Isles. The Horse Chestnut that we are all familiar with is an alien for example, from Albania and northern Greece in the early 17th century.

Question Time with FISHERS SOLICITORS What can I do about my neighbour’s overhanging tree?

Now that summer is here, and more time will be spent in the garden, you may start to notice that the plants and trees have started to grow quickly.

However, questions can arise about what to do if a neighbour’s tree is encroaching onto your property, and that tree is not protected by a Tree Preservation Order, or is in a Conservation Area.

If that approach is unsuccessful, you can hire a tree surgeon or gardener to trim the tree yourself, but it should only be trimmed as far as your boundary line. Any cuttings from the tree have to be given back to the neighbour (unless you agree with them otherwise). You may be able to claim the costs of these works from your neighbour.

Disputes with neighbours can be especially stressful. This is because you have to see them every day, and it can cause a lot of tension. In the first instance, it is usually recommended that you approach your neighbour and express your concerns in a friendly manner. This may solve the issue, and they can arrange for the tree to be trimmed.

Although also possible, it would be unwise to substantially remove any encroaching roots from your property up to the boundary line.

The removal of roots may cause the tree to become unstable, or cause the tree to decay.

If your neighbour then requires any works due to the damage of the roots, you may be held responsible.

REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL

As the country emerges from lockdown, an increasing sense of optimism seems to have filled the air with a much more familiar feel returning this summer.

Faster recovery predicted There also appears to be a similar air of optimism in relation to economic matters, with data across the first half of this year proving to be stronger than analysts had expected.

As a result, there now seems to be a good chance that major economies on both sides of the Atlantic will have recovered the lost ground caused by the pandemic before the end of 2021.

Global growth forecasts upgraded This has led to a string of renowned international forecasting agencies upgrading their global growth projections during the past few months. The UN’s mid-2021 World Economic Situation and Prospects Report, for instance, revealed an annual growth forecast of 5.4% for this year, up significantly from January’s 4.7% estimate. This brighter outlook largely reflects the rapid vaccine rollout in a few large economies, principally the US and China, as well as an increase in global trade.

Diverging fortunes UN economists, however, did warn that inadequate availability of vaccines in many countries was threatening a more broadbased global recovery. The report did strike a note of caution, suggesting that, ‘the economic outlook for the countries in South Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean remains fragile and uncertain.’

Advice remains paramount While the outlook has certainly improved significantly across the first half of this year, the UN forecast reinforces how the pandemic continues to create a relatively uncertain economic backdrop. Embracing positive triggers I’m sure that we’ve all had moments when we hear a fragment of a song and we’re instantly transported to some other time in our lives. Or maybe walking down a street and catch the hint of a smell, bread baking, and again our mind takes us right back.

Often this is a happy memory, perhaps something that we did as a child, something we had completely forgotten about. The power of our memories and the associations made is truly incredible; it can change our whole mood from a brief sound or smell.

It is possible that we already know what these triggers are in our own lives. It may be a song that lifts our mood - because of the associations it has.

It may be a scent that we know will take us back to a happy situation. It may even be a book, or a short passage that makes us smile or feel more confident.

This is even more true of God’s word. If we read the Bible regularly it will become part of our lives, the wisdom of God’s word will become part of who we are.

When we are in situations, we won’t just have associations from our own lives to fall back on, we will have God’s guidance, there for us whenever we need it.

Perhaps you have a great knowledge of the Bible and read it every day, it may be you’ve never read it, but the beauty of God’s word is that it is freely available to everyone. All we need to do is to start reading and let God’s word positive impact our lives day by day.

Knife Crime Do you know who is most likely to be convicted of carrying a knife?

It is young men aged 12-25 – could it be your friend, son or brother?

It is often because they do not feel safe but could also be due to peer pressure. More often than not they simply don’t have a full understanding of the legalities of carrying a knife or the dangers it brings.

Warning Signs • Has their attitude to school or education changed?

• Do they have new friends you’ve not met before?

• Are they protective and/or secretive with their bag and/or clothing?

• Have they been overly defensive when you have questioned them about their possessions?

• Do they send or receive more messages than they did before?

• Do they ever get up and leave the house abruptly?

• Are they out of the house more, particularly in the evenings and at night?

• Have they demonstrated a positive attitude towards those that carry knives, for example talking about self-defence?

• Have you noticed anything missing from your house that could be used as a weapon such as a kitchen knife or screwdriver?

Where do I go from here?

• When young people are educated about

the consequences of knife crime they may reconsider carrying one.

• Try to build their self-esteem and reinforce the importance of their life and what they can achieve to empower them about a positive future.

• Take time to have a true conversation with them, be available and ready to listen.

Remember to let their voice be the main one heard during the conversation.

Consider mentioning: • That they do have a choice. It’s not a one way street, there is always the opportunity to change things around.

• The law. It is illegal to carry a knife, even if it belongs to someone else and carries a sentence of four years.

• The police. They will stop and search someone they believe is carrying a knife.

• Personal safety. The knife carried for protection could be used against the person carrying it.

The Consequence Knife crime is considered a violent crime and can severely affect their ability to get jobs. Carrying or using a knife doesn’t just affect that individual.

When a knife is used, the individual’s family, the victim and the victim’s friends and family are all affected.

An update on our team As a practice we are continuing to develop and expand our team and the skill set that we have available to support the care we provide for our patients. We are excited to announce that we now have the expertise of a paramedic and pharmacy technician who have joined the team.

Paramedics Ben and Laura have experience working for the emergency services, urgent care and home visiting service. They will be able to assess your symptoms, examine you, make diagnoses and provide you with advice. If required they can make arrangements for onward referrals, diagnostic testing or a prescription. Some of the items they can manage include acute medical conditions/presentations, minor illnesses and minor injuries. The paramedics will be supporting us with telephone consulting, face to face appointments and home visiting.

Pharmacy Technician Sadie has previously worked in community pharmacy and has a wealth of experience. She will be working alongside our clinical pharmacist and the team who process prescription requests. Some

Treatment Room Assistant Molly has been working as a phlebotomist for the practice for the last six months. She has expanded her remit and is now trained to take blood pressure readings, undertake ECGs and diabetic foot checks.

Ashby Museum

Essential repairs now planned for later this year!

Ashby Museum relies totally on its volunteers to ensure it opens regularly for both local residents and visitors from further afield. It is particularly sad when we lose colleagues who have also become friends. This year, with the deaths of Mrs Pat Dixon and Mrs Sally Peterson, we have lost a valued Secretary and Office Secretary respectively. We miss them greatly and our thoughts are with their families and loved ones.

On a brighter note, we are slowly moving forward to the £13,000 needed to replace the glass frontage in our reception area. This is mainly due to the fine effort of Alan Bowman, in setting up a Just Giving page which has allowed many local people to donate; and to Mrs Patricia Clews, who has kindly given a large legacy on behalf of her late husband, Ian, who was a much-respected Headmaster of the Manor House school in the town.

We hope to have the building work done before Christmas; then we need to attend to a leaking flat roof! The repairs to the museum are vital for health and safety reasons and will need to be carried out to ensure the museum can remain open. Summer Fruits Pie Introduction

Make the most of summers berries with this delectable pie… perfect with a dollop of fresh cream!

Ingredients

(serves four)

For the pastry: 225g cold unsalted butter chopped into small pieces 350g plain flour 50g icing sugar Pinch of salt 1 large egg yolk For the filling: 800g of berries such as strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, cherries or blueberries 100g sugar 2tbsp of cornflour ½ tsp cinnamon 1 egg white (for glazing) 1tbsp sugar (for sprinkling)

Method

1. Put the flour, butter, icing sugar and salt in a food processor and blitz into crumbs. Combine the yolk with 1tbsp cold water, then add to the processor and pulse until the dough comes together. Divide the dough into two, wrap in clingfilm and chill in the fridge for at least one hour or, better still, overnight.

2. Heat oven to 190C/170C fan/gas mark 5. Roll out one half of the pastry, then butter an 8” pie dish and press in the pastry topped with a sheet of baking paper and baking beans. Bake blind for 30 mins.

• If you’re time-starved, feel free to use pre-made shortcrust pastry which is generally as good as homemade, and certainly easier!

• If you don’t have baking beans use cooking weights, dried lentils or rice.

Cats As far as audible communication goes, cats don’t have too much to work with.

That’s why, beyond a casual meow or purr, they need to find other ways to express themselves.

Take hissing, for instance, Whilst looking outwardly aggressive, it’s actually a fear reflex, designed to ward off an enemy rather than engage in combat. This leads to the point that a cat’s greater communicative strength is in its physical actions, such as rubbing against legs, wrapping around of its tail and even head-butting!

As far as those audible clues go, a meow is generally a cat to human interaction, as they rarely make this noise to each other, and is usually a note that they are in need of something.

As for purring, this isn’t just done just to denote satisfaction, as the same sound is used for pain or anxiety.

Dogs With our canines, different barks do have different meanings. They can reflect delight, surprise, threat, panic and more, with the pitch, number of barks and space between offering big clues as to the dog’s state of mind.

Consider the delight of a highpitched bark compared to the seriousness of a low-pitched one which bottoms out into a sinister growl, and you can see how expressive this form of communication can be.

So while dogs are not conveying direct, there is a huge complexity in the sound that can express so much; and of course, as we know, a dog’s greater communicative strength, particularly where others are concerned, comes in the leaving of and picking up of scent.

The Conservation Volunteers

The summer is a great time for getting out and about in the local area!

There are some big honeypot sites - Rosliston Forestry Centre, Hicks Lodge Cycling Centre, Sence Valley Forest Park, Beacon Hill, Elvaston Castle among many others, but there are a lot of smaller sites and beauty spots well worth a visit.

Ashby is well situated for getting out and about.

Both the National Forest Way and the Ivanhoe Way pass through the town, and there are also pleasant walks to Packington along Packington Nook Lane.

Further afield, Hicks Lodge is nice and close, but for a quieter trip out why not try Daniel Hayes Wood off Derby Road, Smisby, or perhaps Willesley Wood, or the woodland complex that includes New Lount Nature Reserve? For a pleasant afternoon out, I can also recommend parking at Staunton Harold and walking to the pub at Lount, or parking at the layby opposite

Lount Recycling Centre and walking through to the tearooms at Staunton Harold.

Over in Coalville, Snibston Country Park has had an overhaul and now has an exciting new mountain biking track, as well as the usual woodland walks.

A word of caution on this: it is a more challenging course and therefore NOT suitable for inexperienced child cyclists, as I found out to my cost! There is now a small fee for parking at this site.
