Miners Pension Compensation We are successfully claiming compensation for former miners who transferred out of the Mineworkers Pension Scheme.

Many miners were advised to transfer out of their British coal pension to a private scheme which paid considerably less! This was bad advice and many retired miners or their widows have lost out!

Example 1 - £67,000

Example 2 - £48,000

Mr D. a miner from SWADLINCOTE was made redundant from RAWDON in the 1980’s. On the advice of a sales agent from Prudential he transferred £6,493 from his mineworkers pension to them. He was promised a better return which wasn’t true. They agreed settlement of £67,391.

Mr M. a miner from MELTON MOWBRAY worked at SILVERHILL. He was advised by an independent financial advisor to transfer his miners pension to Scottish Life (now called Royal London). We won compensation of £48,000 even though the financial advisors were no longer in business.

Example 4 - £141,000

Mr K. from SHEPSHED was made redundant from WHITWICK in 1986. On the advice of an agent of Sun Life he transferred £5,300 of his miners pension to them. He lost out as a result but we proved this and secured compensation of £89,956.

Mr H. a miner from LOUGHBROROUGH worked at COTGRAVE. In 1988 he was approached by a sales agent of Scottish Amicable to transfer £19,000 from his miners pension to them. He was promised a better return which wasn’t true, he received compensation of £141,391.

Ashby Life and Ibstock Life (formerly known as Whats Around) launched back in 2005 – that’s 14 years ago! 14 years of monthly magazines promoting local businesses, tradespeople, charities, community groups and events within the area. Our main aim is, and always has been, to urge people to buy local, use local and live local.

Last year we extended our reach to South Derbyshire and launched Melbourne Life which has had a great response. With the launch of Castle Donington Life from November we will hand deliver our magazines to 25,000 homes. LOCAL EVENTS

Ashby’s FABulous returns on Saturday 5th October and promises to turn the town into a virtual fairground in line with this year’s carnival theme. The town will be decorated with bunting and balloons and the shop windows will once again be taken over by live models.

The models will be posing from 11am to 3.30pm creating window displays like you’ve never seen before. Expect some amazing costumes and fancy dress from the models and shop staff alike.

As well as the shops most of the town centre businesses will be involved. Look out for lots of special offers and goody bags available on the day.

There will be the usual variety of street entertainment bringing the town to life and keeping the little one’s entertained. Taking in all of the different window displays on show also offers the perfect excuse to go and explore all the lanes and courtyards off Market Street you may not usually wander through.

As always, this annual extravaganza celebrates Ashby and all it has to offer, showcasing our wide variety of shops, bars, cafes and businesses. It’s a perfect way to remind us all of the benefits of shopping local.

ONLINE ENTRY FOR THE 2019 ASHBY SANTA FUN RUN & WALK IS NOW OPEN N! Now a permanent fixture on the Ashby Christmas calendar, the fifth Ashby Santa Fun Run will take place on Sunday 1st December time and once again Ashby Life are proud to sponsor this fantastic event.

Since it began an amazing £40,000 has been raised for local charities.

This year’s event will primarily support three local charities; Staunton Harold Sailability Trust, Phoenix Children’s Foundation and Enrych. In next month’s issue we will bring you further detail on each of these charities and show how any monies raised will prove invaluable.

The Ashby Santa Fun Run & Walk is a great event enjoyed by all of the family. All participants are provided with a Santa suit, hat, belt and beard to run or walk in and presented with their own medal upon completion of the 3km course. It’s hoped that last year’s record-breaking turnout of 1,485 Santa’s will be beaten so don’t hesitate – sign up now!!

PARKINSON’S DISEASE Sometimes described as a ‘shaking palsyy’ Parkinson’s Disease is a progressive condition affectiing the brain.

It affects around 145000 people in the UK K; that’s around 1 adult in 350.

Men are more likely to be affected than women n in a ratio of about 2:1. Many famous people are e diagnosed with the condition, including Billy Connolly (Comedian), Michael J Fox (Back to the Future Actor), and Paul Sinha (The Chase) The cause of Parkinson’s disease is unknown, but it is thought to be a combination of environmental and genetic factors.

Parkinson’s develops when there is a problem w with specific brain cells that produce a chemical called Dopamine which is essential in allowing the braain to instruct the body to move. These cells stop working and are lost over time causing sympto oms of tremor, slowness, stiffness and muscle cramp ps.

Posture may become stooped and handwriting g small. Daily living activities can become difficult and balance becomes a problem, falling or tripping causing potential injury.

Other symptoms might arise including fatigue, sleep disturbances, anxiety, memory loss and pain.

If you are concerned you may have Parkinson’s disease see your GP who can refer you for specialist assessment and treatment.

Treatments can be very effective in relieving symptoms. Taking regular medications help maintain dopamine levels in the brain and exercise will help overcome the movement difficulties.

Those with mild symptoms are encouraged to engage in normal activity and regular exercise such as walking, cycling, gym training and classes.

M&S FOOD BRINGS ASHBY-DE-LA-ZOUCH COMMUNITY TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE 10-YEAR PARTNERSHIP WITH MACMILLAN CANCER SUPPORT This year M&S Food celebrated 10 years as official partner to Macmillan Cancer Support’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, during which time over £16.3 million has been raised for the charity.

As well as coffee mornings on 27th September, M&S Food stores celebrated throughout the month with a host of in-store activities to raise funds for people living with cancer. To mark the fundraising milestone, M&S Ashby-De-La-Zouch Foodhall introduced a Wall of Support to encourage customers and colleagues to share their messages of support to “Raise a Mug” for Macmillan or a loved one.

INVESTMENT JARGON MADE SIMPLE Commonly used words and phrases in connection with investing can often seem confusing, but the good news is that we are well-versed in providing plain-English explanations of technical terms.

VOLATILITY

You will probably have heard this term quite a lot recently. Volatility refers to the rate at which the price of an investment moves up and down. If the price moves up and down rapidly over a short period, it is described as having high volatility. If the price remains relatively stable, it is said to be a low volatility stock. Needless to say, investors generally prefer lower volatility.

ASSET ALLOCATION

This is the process of deciding what proportion of your investment portfolio should be invested in different types of investment. There are four main categories of assets – cash, equities, bonds and property. Determining which mix of assets you should hold in your portfolio will depend on personal factors including your investment time horizon and your attitude to risk. Asset allocation helps to spread risk through diversification, which in simple terms, means not putting all your eggs in one basket.

INDEX

An index, and there are several, is a combined measure of fluctuating market prices of shares in a selection of companies that have similar characteristics, such as size. Some indices are designed to reflect the overall performance of a particular market, while others follow a specific sector.

So, for example, the FTSE 100 is made up of the UK’s 100 largest quoted companies, the FTSE 250 includes the next largest 250 companies, and the FTSE Small Cap includes companies smaller than that. In the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average consists of 30 large American companies across various sectors.

IT’S TIME TO LIGHT UP YOUR HOME!

If you are currently sitting in your living room, drinking your gin while staring at a single light bulb in the ceiling…….. Yes, you, then it’s time to ‘enlighten’ yourself with all the other possibilities with some simple lighting solutions.

It’s time for you to imagine ‘what if the lonely light bulb is dressed with a light fitting that diffuses warm light all over the room? Or a beautiful mirror that helps to reflect light and table lamps that create a warm ambience in dark corners and spot lights that dramatise your beautiful artwork and ornaments?

It’s important to understand the source of natural light in each room, and make the most of it. A north facing room will benefit from a mirror opposite the window and a light enhancing paint colour on the walls to reflect light into the room. A bright south facing room, on the other hand can benefit from shades with shorter wave lengths such as dark blues, purples, dark greys and black.

Once you identify the problems, it’s time to add spot lights to dark rooms, choose focal lighting and layer your rooms with ambient and task lighting.

Oh, and don’t forget, add candles, tea lights and light your stove to create mood and ambience! If you find it too overwhelming, then it’s best to get help from lighting designers. But, for now, get a measuring tape and take measurements of the ceiling height. Calculate how many light fittings you need, hit the high street, look for lighting shops and ask for help.

This is then followed up by another call claiming to be from the bank’s fraud department, advising them to move money into a ‘safe’ account.

Remember, a genuine organisation will never ask you for security details such as your PIN or passwords. Banks will never ask you to move money to another account. If you’re not 100% sure who you are talking to, DON’T give out ANY personal or financial information, even if you are told you have been a victim of fraud or a scam.

Rehearsals are now in full swing for our Concert on Friday 11th October. With songs from some of the shows we have enjoyed performing, plus a few from shows we would love to perform, the theme of our Concert is Getting to Know You. You won’t be surprised to read we’ll also be showcasing a couple of numbers from our forthcoming production of The King and I, which is at the 400 Hall, Repton School during the week 31st March to 4th April 2020. We’re still hoping to hear from some budding Yul Brynners and Mrs Annas for that one!

We always say we’re a jolly friendly bunch of people, and we think our Concert will prove that as we have past Members returning to reprise some of the rôles they have played in previous productions. Laura Jones will be joining us all the way from Cambridgeshire to bring Eliza Doolittle back from My Fair Lady. Chris Head is returning to our ranks too, and will remind you of his fabulous Tevye from Fiddler on the Roof and the lovely Emily Watson is back with us too, revisiting our production of The Sound of Music.

FITNESS TIPS WITH FITNESS REPUBLIC

CALLING ALL LADIES! We often have ladies chat to us about how self-conscious they are and that they are really scared of coming to the gym.

Now, this is not uncommon, but I think the explosion of social media has not helped.

Facebook, Instagram and so on, are clearly having an adverse effect on how we feel, and for quite a few of us, pushing us further away from the gym.

Firstly, I’ll be honest, if you have not been to a gym before, or have had a bad experience in the past, the gym can be intimidating. Walking through the front door can be one of the most scariest things. I remember before myself and my husband, Simon, owned Fitness Republic, I was just the same, very self-conscious, worried that everyone was looking at me. I even said to Simon that I needed to get in better shape before I went to the gym. I honestly think that because he is into his fitness so much that everyone thinks I must be too, but it couldn’t be further from the truth for me - it’s often a struggle.

I am someone who understands design and loves the detail of a properly set out garden, and so it is rare that I visit a place and think - this space is perfect, it is absolutely right and I wouldn’t change a thing. Such joyous contentment was found in the garden at Holdenby House, just over the border in Northamptonshire.

On entering the first garden space there is the Elizabethan Garden with a sundial at its centre.

This is encircled by a pattern of beds for herbs, punctuated by box topiary in a mix of circles and cubes.

There is of course symmetry as you expect, but what makes the space feel special and unique could be the combination of the perfectly manicured high circular hedges, with accurately levelled horizontal tops, intersected by four evenly spaced entrances into other parts of garden. These impressive hedges form a room creating the essence of a safe and secret garden.

There is a huge walled kitchen garden, beautifully laid out with a mixture of fruit trees. Some of the trees are trained as espaliers edging pathways,

seductively displaying delicious pears. From the kitchen garden a path will lead you to discover a croquet lawn. This is flanked by mature trees on two sides and a bed of lavender at one end and at the fourth side there is a huge, shining and magnificent wedge shaped modern sculpture. The mix of an old garden with such a striking piece of modern art is hard to get right, but here it is executed perfectly.

For me, the very best part of the gardens is the Pond Garden, which was designed by Rupert Golby. It’s a masterpiece in hedge design, space allocation and maintenance. In the centre there is a small round stone pond with a male nude statue on a bench gazing down at the fish and the lilies.

Enclosing the pond is a circular path, edged by Box to create four arc shaped flower beds. These four beds are backed by tall curved yew hedges, which are repeated in an outer concentric circle.

The formal grass lawns are masterfully flat and levelled, green and healthy. I’m not sure I can properly describe the perfection of the Pond Garden, but urge you to visit next time it is open.

antiseptic a small sterile dressing is applied which is normally taken off after 24 hours.

HOW DOES NEEDLING WORK? In essence like other treatments as mentioned needling attempts to activate your immune system to recognize that there is a viral infection within your skin. It does this by damaging the Verruca and transferring some of the virus into the deeper layers of skin where the immune system is much more active and present. ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS The Museum received two new publications recently – Duel by Paul Mathieu, who writes How Lord Hastings (the 4th Marquis) stole the Pocket Venus and how her fiancé was avenged and Our Davenport Stories by June Bird and others, a further book on the famous Davenport family of Ashby de la Zouch. We thank both authors for our complimentary copies.

We have also linked up with Fishers Solicitors who will soon be moving from most of their current offices on Kilwardby Street to a new base on Ivanhoe Industrial Estate on Smisby Road. They have kindly said that any local material, no longer needed, will be passed on to the Museum for safe keeping.

The range of our popular Museum’s Christmas cards include a new design this year and will be on sale this month.

MUSIC AT THE VENTURE THEATRE We don’t just put on plays at the Venture Theatre, a wide variety of music is also presented. We have our regular jazz club as well as concerts from choirs and music shows such as a great Beatles band, an ABBA tribute act and folk artistes such as Sally Barker.

Venture Jazz Club The Venture Jazz club is presenting a new band on Saturday 12th October–they are called Cranberry Flick. This 7 piece outfit has a vintage style and will provide a visual treat with their costumes and special stage effects.

HEALTH CHECK YOUR CAT Although your cat needs a check-up with the vet once a year, you can also carry out your ow wn health check at home. Here are some of the main areas to keep an eye on so your feline friend sttays as healthy as possible through the year.

Skin and coat Check for any lesions or scaling as this could indicate eir a skin condition or infestation of fleas/mites. The coat should be shiny and glossy with no bald pattches ell or dandruff – cats typically shed in autumn as we as springtime, so it’s a good idea to groom them regularly.

Eyes Eye health issues are generally easier to spot, as redness or soreness becomes fairly obvious. Your cat may rub their eyes to relieve itchiness, or squint to avoid the light and ease soreness.

Ears Although you shouldn’t examine too far inside your cat’s ears, you can look for any dirt, redness, or otther signs that they might be infected. If your cat shakes

its head or holds it to one side, they could have an ear pro oble em and d your ve et will be able e to exaamine e them more closely.

Mouth Good dental hygiene is important for cat health and you may already brush your cat’s teeth regularly. If you notice they have bad breath or red/swollen gums, or are salivating more than normal, it’s advisable to take them to the vet as they could have tooth decay, gum disease or a dig gestive problem.
