ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS We took part in the welcome given to a party from Sister City, Evans, Colorado, USA on Saturday 9th November They were given a brief talk on the history and development of Ashby Museum and were able to view not just the two exhibition rooms, but also look at several medieval documents and artefacts.

Of great interest was the alternative Royal Line laid out as a family tree showing the descent from George, Duke of Clarence (the middle brother of Edward IV and Richard III) to the museum’s patron, the present holder of the title, Simon Abney-Hastings, 15th Earl of Loudoun. He is the grandson of Barbara Abney-Hastings, the 13th Countess, whom many Ashbeians will remember as a devoted supporter of the town.

Our winter opening times start on Monday 2nd December. We will be closed on Thursdays until the spring. The times are: Monday to Wednesday and Friday: 11am to 1pm; 2pm to 4pm; Saturday: 10am to 3pm.

Christmas holiday from 3pm, Saturday December 21st, reopening 11am, Monday January 6th 2020.

Our Christmas cards are selling well, but be sure you make your purchases by December 21st!

ASHBEIAN MTG NEWS

IT’S A FAMILY AFFAIR AGAIN! It is with great pleasure we announce our fantastic cast for The King and I, which will be performed from 31st March to 4th April 2020, at our wonderful theatre home at the 400 Hall, Repton School.

Katie is also one of the King’s children.

Most of you will have an idea of the plot of this gorgeous Rodgers and Hammerstein show set in the 1860s – the King of Siam wants to introduce “modern” ways to his country, and brings English teacher Mrs Anna to Siam to teach some of his wives, and many of his children.

Director David McKnight has returned to us after a year off, and our production team also includes Catherine Matthews as MD; Leanne O’Brien and Maddy Gidlow our Choreographers, and Alan Hutchinson who is assisting the Production Team in all areas.

Robin Popley, who joined AMTG for The Pirates of Penzance, has been cast as the King, and is already an impressive ruler at rehearsals. Other principals are played by regular Members Keith Reynolds, Chris Head and Karen Jamieson.

Newcomers Faye Grimmer and James Martindale have been cast as Tuptim and Lun Tha, the fated lovers from Burma. Tuptim has been presented as a “gift” from the King of Burma, and their love for each other is doomed from the start.

And so to the family affair, Mrs Anna and her son Louis are played by real-life mother and son, Ali and David Sturla, and the relationship is obviously going to be very natural on stage. Ali’s daughter

Other family connections are Prince Chulalongkorn is played by Adam Bailey who has been with the company since Oliver! in 2015, and this year we are joined by Adam’s sister, Ellen.

So we’re under way, with a very strong cast and Ensemble, lovely new youngsters as the King’s children, and our fine Production Team. All that’s left to tell you at this stage is that the box office has been open since 1st November and tickets are already flying!

RESOLUTION One of my 2019 New Year garden visit resolutions was to go to the Eden Project in Cornwall. I’ve just made it in time and am pleased to be able to tell you about this unique place.

There is in fact so much to say about the project, from the initial concept stage and epic undertaking of transforming an old china clay pit, through to what is now a major tourist attraction featuring a Mediterranean biome and a Rainforest biome. The Eden Project is education on a global scale and has charity status, helping to inform gardening in Africa, particularly how to grow food with climate smart techniques, which in turn develops jobs and horticultural knowledge.

The two biomes have created two separate garden environments where the temperatures and climates are controlled to create 1) a Mediterranean space and 2) a Rainforest.

The rainforest biome was to me the most interesting as I had never before seen tropical plants in their ‘natural’ environment. Coffee beans growing abundantly on branches, bananas ripening, and a Cacao tree – the reason we have chocolate. In this biome the temperature is 18-35 degrees and humid, mimicking the jungle conditions found in Western

Dampness is maintained through pools and waterfalls to keep the air between, 60 – 90% humidity. With huge leaf trees, tropical birds and waterfalls, the scene gets more impressive - and hotter – if you take the tree top walkway. There are over 1000 different rainforest plants in this space, many grown from seed in the Eden nursery. Overall, it is a place full of pleasant surprises, such as a collection of over 500 orchids from Costa Rica. Helpful information boards explain sustainable methods of protecting the rainforests.

The Mediterranean Biome shows what can grow in the warm temperate regions of the world including the western Mediterranean, South Africa and California. Aloe Vera, chilli peppers, grapevines and Citrus groves thrive here. Many of the plants, such as lavender, are small and hairy to reduce water loss.

Cacti are prickly to keep off predators, and plants scented with oils keep bugs out and water in. In the hot, arid conditions the plants have developed to survive. I found the climatic conditions in this dome more like a comfortable summer holiday – even in winter, in Cornwall!

The areas outside the biomes, the old sides of the clay pit, are now well landscaped and feature gardens and blocks of ornamental grasses (helpfully labelled so you can look up your favourite and see if it can grow in your own garden).

Safety and security are uppermost in everyone’s mind. Doors and windows are the most common entry point for burglars – with over 74% of thieves using your front door as a welcome mat. Here are 5 suggestions for improving home security:

1. Secure your doors. Don’t help a burglar stroll through the front door! Doors are at the heart of your home’s security and you need to ensure that your exterior doors are strong so that the only visitors you have are the welcome ones.

Inspect your exterior doors to make sure the door frames are strong, the hinges are protected and you have a multi-locking system ensuring nobody is getting in through lock snapping, picking or bumping. Dear local residents, As most of you are aware, each year the 4th Ashby Scout Group runs a Christmas Post service for the local community. The service has been running since 1982 and is the main fundraiser for the year for all sections of the group – Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. At only 30p per stamp (compared to 61p for a Royal Mail 2nd class stamp) our Christmas Post service not only saves you money on your local Christmas card deliveries it also takes a little of the pressure off our local posties at their busiest time of year.

The Christmas Post is run entirely by volunteers.

How it works:

Buy stamps from the locations listed opposite.

Write cards, apply stamps and post at any of the same locations listed.

Stamps can also be purchased outside the Co-op Superstore on Derby Road on Saturday 7th and 14th December from 9am to 2pm.

All cards that are collected each week are taken to the scout hut for sorting and then passed on to our delivery team every Saturday night.

They are then delivered from the Sunday (8th & 15th December) onwards.

The country has an opportunity to make a choice about whose vision for the country is both the most attractive and most deliverable.

Isaiah, a prophet in the old testament of the Bible, talks about a future ruler, someone whose laws are moral, just and peaceful; For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father,

Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.

WINTER:

WHY DOES MY PAIN INCREASE? As the winter chill is upon us it is very common to find our aches and pains become more evident.

Is it true that the cold weather makes us ache more?

What happens to our body in colder weather to make it ache more?

• When the temperature drops, our body works harder to keep our core temperature stable to protect our vital organs.

Muscles will contract and often tighten up to constrict blood flow to our limbs and keep our core warm. This can cause more tightness and soreness in the muscles • Muscles tightening up over a period of time can increase our body’s perception of pain • Our posture can become quite poor when temperature drops. We often adopt a posture where we huddle up on ourselves to keep warm, by lifting our shoulders up, rounding our back and poking our chin forward. How can I help myself: • Keep moving. A brisk 15 minute walk gets the heart pumping, the body moving and warms you up. You can do this several times a day.

SECURE YOUR SHED OR GARAGE It’s strange how most people don’t secure their shed or garage in the same way they do their homes.

People often end up using a flimsy lock or padlock to protect the contents – whether it’s a car, bike or lawnmower. The fact is, a burglar will usually try a shed or garage first because they can find the tools they need to get into the house.

SHED AND OUTBUILDING SECURITY First off, check that your insurance covers the contents of your shed or outbuildings from theft.

THINK LIKE A THIEF Take a look at your shed and consider how you would break in. It’s worth having a good padlock on the door with no exposed screws. Pay attention to hinges, as these are sometimes easily removable.

If you have windows then these could be vulnerable unless they’re secured with wire mesh or grills. And keep them locked at all times.

ALARM IT Consider a battery-operated shed alarm. They look low key but they respond to movement or door contact with an extremely loud siren.

LOCK IT, HIDE IT OR MARK IT Don’t give them the opportunity or the tools to commit a crime. Lock everything away securely. Tools can be locked inside a locker or box or secured with a chain. Secure your bike to the ground or a lockable stand within a locked shed or garage.

It’s always worth draping an old sheet over the top of mowers or bikes to keep them covered from view.

Hopefully that got you singing!

With Christmas just around the corner, I thought I’d give you my recommendations on how best to make a difference in your fitness and health going forward into 2020!

GETTING FIT SHOULD BE FUN!

First and foremost, you should enjoy keeping fit, so try different things and pick some form of exercise that you find you actually enjoy doing, whether it be dancing, running, weights, fitness classes or swimming!

ALWAYS STRIVE FOR GOOD FORM RATHER THAN HEAVY WEIGHT

Remember technique is first and then the weight is second. It will have more effect lifting a lighter weight perfectly than lifting a heavier weight poorly.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I EXERCISE?

BRING A FRIEND

Sometimes training on your own can be hard, so if you can train with a friend or family member it will definitely help to keep you on track as there’s someone else to be accountable to.

TRACK IT

Tracking your workouts can be the key to the progression you need. You can always try to better yourself if you know what you did last time!

MAKE IT A HABIT

It usually takes around 12 weeks of consistent training to form the habit, so give it a bit of time and you’ll soon love it and won’t want to miss a session!

PLAN AND PRIORITISE

Get in the habit of planning what you’re going to do in the gym, then prioritise it. It’s easy to say I haven’t got time, just make sure you prioritise YOU! Spend a little on yourself and everything else will be better for it!

IF IT DOESN’T WORK, CHANGE IT

There are no rules, no right and wrong. It’s up to you how many times per week you train, but whatever you choose, do it consistently. Even once per week will have great benefits and is way better than doing nothing at all!

Remember if something’s not changing, then you need to change what you do. All too often I see the same workout being performed with no results, so it’s definitely time to change it!

ONE STEP AT A TIME

Don’t wait until the New Year to get started.

Take small steps, as long as they are in the right direction, and you are always challenging your body, you’ll consistently be progressing.

MIX IT UP

Mixing up your workouts can be an excellent way to keep you motivated. Sometimes I do a different program every session. There’s so much variety that you can do!

VENTURE THEATRE NEWS OUR CHRISTMAS PLAY

Written by Don Harworth as a radio play and originally directed by Alan Ayckbourn we have converted it into a full stage production and have chosen it as our Christmas production. The play ends on Saturday 7th December.

The play takes place at the Venture Theatre from Thursday 20th to Saturday 22nd February and Wednesday 26th to Saturday 29th February.

ST HELEN’S CHURCH & HERITAGE CENTRE Last year, for the very first time at St Helen’s, we took part in an Advent tradition called the Posada.

Las Posadas is Spanish for “The Inns”, and commemorates the journey that Joseph and Mary made from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of a safe refuge where Mary could give birth to the baby Jesus. Throughout Advent, we took it in turns to host Mary and Joseph (in our case, beautiful knitted figures) as they travelled from home to home before arriving in church on Christmas Eve. Many of last year’s hosts not only took Mary and Joseph into their homes overnight but also texted their thoughts or sent photos to Reverend Mary so that she could log their travels on our Facebook page. Facebook followers saw them engaging in a variety of activities which included helping with homework, admiring a newly decorated Christmas tree, watching TV and heading off for an evening with Ashby’s Street Pastors.

We plan to repeat our Posada again this Advent.

It proved a welcome opportunity in amongst the

season’s busyness to think and pray not only about Mary and Joseph’s journey, but also to reflect on the journey we are making in Advent as we prepare to meet our Saviour on Christmas Day. If you’d like to follow the Posada progress this year, our Facebook page is St Helen’s Ashby de la Zouch.

CRANBERRY, ORANGE AND NUT LOAF This simple cake makes a delicious alternative to a classic rich fruit Christmas cake. It will keep un-iced in an airtight container for a few days. Add the icing and fresh cranberry topping on the day of serving.

YOU WILL NEED: 175g unsalted butter

l

Read 1hr 4 y in + co 5m oling

l

175g golden caster sugar

l

225g self-raising flour

l

2 tsp ground mixed spice

l

½ tsp baking powder

l

3 large eggs

l

75g sweetened dried cranberries

l

50g walnuts, chopped

l

50g hazelnuts, chopped

l

Zest of 1 orange

l

1 tbsp orange juice

FROSTING Half of a 400g tub ready-made royal icing

l l

2 tsp snowflake sugar sprinkles

l

75g fresh cranberries

l

Fresh mint sprigs, to decorate (optional)

TOP TIP Instead of the fresh cranberries you could scatter over more festive-themed sugar sprinkles and add a dusting of edible gold spray for a really sparkly finish.

METHOD: 1. Preheat the oven to 170C, 150C fan, gas mark 3.

Grease a 900g loaf tin and line the base and up two long sides of the tin with baking parchment.

2. Place the butter, sugar, flour, spice, baking powder and eggs in a large bowl and beat with an electric whisk for 2-3 minutes until thoroughly combined.

Fold in the dried cranberries, nuts and orange zest and juice.

3. Spoon the mixture into the tin and level the

surface. Bake for 1hr-1 hr 15 minutes or until risen and golden and a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes then turn out onto a wire rack and leave to cool completely.

4. Spread the royal icing over the top of the

cake. Scatter over the sugar sprinkles and fresh cranberries, plus the fresh mint sprigs if using.

Leave in a cool place until set. Serve sliced.

PRETTY CHRISTMAS TRIMMINGS THAT CAN HARM YOUR PETS The glitz and glitter of Christmas is so pretty that it’s easy to forget the potential dangers of our festive trimmings, so here are some of the possible hazards that may threaten your pet at this time of year.

Spray snow Spray snow looks very pretty but it does contain chemicals that are harmful. If your cat or dog licks the substance they could suffer from sickness and diarrhoea or other gastrointestinal problems.

Tinsel Tinsel can cause a blockage in the intestines if eaten, and might require a trip to the vet to clear the blockage.

Glitter The sparkle of glitter is very attractive to pets, but glitter is easily ingested. The tiny pieces can also lodge in their eyes and set up a nasty irritation.

Baubles Glass baubles present a serious danger to pets if broken, and also pose a choking hazard.

Fairy lights Your pet can be electrocuted by fairy lights if bitten through, but there’s also a danger they could become tangled in the lights and be unable to free themselves if they’re alone in the house.

Silica gel Silica gel sachets are very small and your pet may eat them without you noticing. These sachets can cause gastrointestinal upset, vomiting, and diarrhoea.

Whilst not wishing to diminish the joy of Christmas, it pays to make sure your pets are safe this festive season.

Many of these trimmings aren’t obviously hazardous but they do have the potential to cause serious harm.

THE GIFT OF READING Whether you’re buying for someone else, looking for ideas for yourself, or plan to buy a book, read it and then wrap it up (we won’t tell), there’s plenty to choose from this month.

Banksy You Are an Acceptable Level of Threat Gary Shove & Patrick Potter This is so much more than just a coffee-table-worthy photography collection. For a start, it’s snort-out-loud funny. It’s been updated for 2019 and now spans Banky’s career, from the early 90s to 2018. There are anecdotes, irreverent biographical references and a few hundred photos to pore over.

Little Robin Red Vest Jan Fearnley This classic picture book is now 20 years old. It tells the story of how the robin got his red vest. (Spoiler: Father Christmas gave it to him as a reward for the robin giving away his own woolly vests.) A great story, beautiful illustrations and a feel-good message to top it all off. What more could a young child want from a book on Christmas morning?

The Testaments Margaret Atwood The Testaments picks up a few years after The Handmaid’s Tale ended. It weaves together the stories of three women – Daisy, born in Gilead but raised in Canada; Agnes Jemima, who’s desperate to escape the life set out for her by her step-parents; and the infamous Aunt Lydia.

We won’t spoil it by giving away too much of the storyline, but it’s fair to say that it’s everything you hoped for and more. Perfect for fans of The Handmaid’s Tale (book or TV series).

Burn After Writing Rhiannon Shove A journal with a difference, Burn after Writing invites teens to answer a series of questions to paint a picture of who they are, from ‘The song that makes me want to dance’ to ‘If I had a brainwashing machine, I would use it to’ and ‘Something I do that makes me feel proud of myself’. Perfect for 11 to 14 year olds. (The adult’s version is worth a look too.)

The Corset Laura Purcell Ruth Butterham is on trial for murdering her mistress. She confessed to the crime, but is she guilty or delusional?

The more that wealthy prison visitor Dorothea Truelove hears of the beaten and broken Ruth’s tale, the less sure she is of who the real villain is in the story. Is Ruth the killer, is there another murderer at large or, as Ruth seems to believe, is the real culprit something far more unlikely? Gripping historical crime fiction sure to appeal to fans of Sarah Waters.

THE CONSERVATION VOLUNTEERS

NEWS FROM TCV: THE COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERING CHARITY With Brexit dominating the headlines, a lot of other issues have received less coverage than they might otherwise have done. One example of this is the latest State of Nature report, which came out in October.

This report, as the title would suggest, gives an overview of how UK species are getting on - points where we can note with satisfaction how conservation efforts are making a positive difference, and other areas where we need to focus our attention, or even make sweeping changes, in order to safe-guard the UK’s ecosystems.

The report (which is readily available online) makes for sobering reading. 13% of all species found in England, for example, are threatened with extinction from the UK. 31% of species are now found in fewer places than they could be seen in the 1970s. The basic picture is that wildlife in our country needs our help.

Positive news is that more people than ever before

are getting involved in wildlife conservation. Here in the National Forest, TCV provides conservation volunteering opportunities every Tuesday, every alternate Friday, and runs one-off events on other days. And we are by no means the only ones! If you would like to be involved, but find that TCV’s offer is inconvenient, please contact me anyway on kay. thompson@tcv.org.uk. I maintain a list of other groups and how to contact them - there will be something there for you!
