This course aims to develop the skills in dealing informally with conflict between individuals and groups. It looks at the causes, components and processes of conflict; positive and negative approaches to conflict; and some methods of conflict resolution practiced in the community and workplace. Introduction to Child Psychology Our understanding of how children develop raises many fascinating questions such as: how far do genes, family and society influence the way a child grows up? How do children develop morals, or come to view themsleves as male or female? What type of education and play is best? This course will be of interest both to people who work with or care for children, and to those with a more general interest in human psychology. If you have done a level 3 childcare course you will find that this course enables you to explore child development in more depth and in the wider context of psychology. Learning in the Early Years The settings in which learning takes place in the early years can be very varied – from childminding and playgroups to nurseries and pre-school classes within primary schools. This course does not qualify you to teach in early years settings, but will give a valuable insight into how young children are encouraged to learn in different formal and informal settings. You will find out more about how young children’s learning is linked to the national curriculum and the Early Learning Goals, and prepare a portfolio of activities for use with pre-school children including those with special needs. Skills for Counselling Counselling skills can be valuable in many situations, whether you support people at work, or listen informally to friends and family. Social Psychology This course will examine the insights gained by social psychologists into the behaviour of people in groups. Who Am I? Psychology of Individual Differences Why are individual people so different? Are our personalities and intelligence fixed from birth? Is there such a thing as a ‘personality disorder’? This course looks at how psychologists account for individual differences and also examines the practical uses of our knowledge about personality and intelligence, including psychometric testing, IQ testing, and approaches to ‘abnormalities’ such as schizophrenia.
