ChildAid to Eastern Europe

Location:

5 Walters Yard, Bromley, BR1 1QA (behind Sainsbury’s)

What service do you provide?

We help disadvantaged children turn their lives around in some of Europe’s poorest areas in Belarus, Moldova, Siberia and Ukraine. Not the usual area of charitable concern, but an area in desperate need and where ChildAid has been exclusively active since 1973. We prevent child abandonment by supporting families in their times of need and supporting babies and children who have been abandoned. We give children a voice through education and play facilities and help transform lives and attitudes to disability through direct action of free to access rehabilitation. We create firm foundations for children, young people and families living in precarious conditions due to poverty, abuse, abandonment or civil war.

Who is it available to?

Any child or family in need that we become aware of and we have the capacity to support.

How are you funded?

Predominantly we are funded from individuals and churches who give regularly, including through our child sponsorship programme, or with one-off gifts. We also have wonderful support from local business and grant making trusts.

Do you accept donations?

Any financial donations of any type are always welcome. We also welcome items for recycling such as jewellery, watches, old cameras, mobile phones, bank notes (UK and overseas, old and current), home printer ink cartridges. These can be delivered to our offices or we can provide envelopes for the smaller items.

Do you run any events?

We only run very occasional events and have none planned for the foreseeable future

Are you looking for volunteers?

Five times a year we send out a newsletter and volunteers are always welcome to help stuff envelopes with the magazines and letters. Tea, coffee, biscuits and friendly chat are offered.

How else can people help?

We deliver talks on our work, and so we’d love any contact with social interest groups who have visiting speakers. We do not charge a fee but welcome any donations. If readers shop online, sign up to our Give As You Live page (www.giveasyoulive.com/join/ childaidee) where over 4,000 retailers will donate a percentage of purchases at no cost to the reader. We also sell lovely Christmas cards and a range of Eastern European gifts such as hand-painted Russian dolls and Christmas tree decorations. All are available from our office or via the website.

My name is Michelle, and I am passionate about what I do. I work locally as a Celebrant, in and around Orpington. Having been an Orpington resident for most of my life, I feel it is important to work closely with the community that I live in, and as a result of that, I have also co-founded The Bereavement Café in Orpington. So, my role as a Celebrant is to work with families who have lost a loved one and help them create a unique and fitting ceremony, to help them say goodbye. But I have also introduced something called, “Remember Me” and that is to help people document their wishes before they die. This is a really simple way of instructing your loved ones with what you want, when that time comes. We can discuss everything from music choices, your life story, colours, themes, and have it all recorded safely, so that when the time comes your family members aren’t left scratching their heads trying to work out what you would have wanted.
