Book worms

One of our eagle-eyed ‘Friends of Life In Orpington’, Mary CodyCowdery, spotted this unique bookcase. Mary told us… "Have you seen this bookcase at the top of Spur Road? [left hand side coming from War Memorial near bus stop and the traffic lights – outside Number 123 Spur Road]. It brings a smile to me seeing it and what a lovely cabinet. Plaque reads “Take a book, Leave a book”. Has a selection of books for all ages."

Would you like to come and play for the Orpington Folk Dance Group sometimes? The group puts together Playford style dances from the 17th/18th centuries and each one has its own tune, so there's plenty of variety.

The group meets on the first and third Thursdays of the month from 11.45am-1.45pm at Farnborough Village Hall. If interested, please email janetmaile@rocketmail.com or call 01689-836407.

Biggin Hill Memorial Museum is working on a new exhibition about the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) and is aiming to track down any descendants of a lady called Lesley Cairns Murray (1917-1945). Lesley was educated in Bromley and the Sorbonne in France, and, in the early years of the war, she drove ambulances in the Compiegne region of France, dodging the bombs. When the ambulances were evacuated back to England, she joined the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA). Sadly, Lesley was killed in a crash at Taplow, Berks in 1945.

Lesley lived in Westmoreland Road and the museum would love to talk to anyone who knew her. If you have any information please email director@bhmm.org.uk

SUPPORTING LOCAL AUTHORS…

You might just recognise the house style on the cover of Patricia Latter’s book And Some Have Witchcraft Thrust Upon Them. It’s based on Patricia’s own home in leafy Petts Wood. The book tells the story of Jane who, after being made redundant, struggles to adapt to a new lifestyle in leafy suburbia. She is appalled by the superstitions of her neighbours and horrified when rumours circulate that she practises witchcraft. Jane ultimately faces being burned at the stake - but all is not quite as it seems. This – and Patricia’s other books - are available in paperback and ebook versions from Amazon.co.uk

Aware of Bromley Chain?

by JENNY FROUDE, author of Making Sense In Sign - a lifeline for a deaf child, Multilingual Matters Ltd Local charity, Bromley Chain, was founded in 1980 by parents of deaf children to forge a link between deaf and hearing people of all ages. The group was instrumental in leading to the set-up of Deaf Access (now merged with deafPLUS) at Community House in Bromley. Our independent charity continues to be supportive of deaf and hard-of-hearing people by campaigning, informing, sponsoring and raising deaf awareness. Recently, as a result of its two-year bursary, there is now an additional fully qualified teacher of the deaf at Darrick Wood School in Orpington. For more information see www.bromleychain.org.uk
