This past spring, Charlie Co. 426 was re-deployed, this time to Afghanistan. In the immediate future, Charlie Company will continue to "improve their foxhole” and put a new set of eyes on the tasks that the 704th Brigade Support Battalion (out of Fort Carson, CO) has been conducting for the past year. They will support the Brigade’s mission and work with the ANA (Afghan National Army) in various partnerships such as teaching them basic life saving skills, mechanic’s skills, marksmanship, etc. During each of the past deployments, the residents of La Habra have generously donated various goods and items to the unit members (see below). If you would like to make a donation, please drop your items off at City Hall, Monday through Thursday, from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Of special need are monetary donations for postage costs. City News: Trash Regulations

Trash Scavenging Rules and Regulations

The scavenging of trash and recyclables is a growing problem in California. The most common scavenging method is to go through the recycling trash cans on trash collection days to collect valuables and other items for recycling. The City of La Habra would like to remind the public that scavenging for trash and recyclables is against the law, and violators may be arrested. Once placed in a container at the curb, recyclables are considered the property of the City, and their removal by an unauthorized individual is considered theft. Recycling through our refuse provider ensures compliance with the required diversion rates and helps keep refuse costs low. If a resident sees scavengers collecting trash or recyclables, we ask that you notify the La Habra Police Department at 562-905-9750. Please remember that police response is dependent on officer availability and other activity taking place.

Hibiscus Hunt Winners! Hidden in the last issue of Life in La Habra were 23 hibiscus flowers just like the one below, but smaller. Many participated in the hunt, but only seven people found them all. For a list of the 23 hidden hibiscus, visit the City’s Web site at www.lahabracity.com. Congratulations to our winners: Agnes Joshiakar (Grand Prize Winner), Diane Featherstone, Marissa Skala, Mary Bowlin, Monique Hampton, Pat Schreihart, and Valerie Martinez!

Co m m u n i t y Center Op e ns When the Te m p e ra tu re Rises

Extreme weather can impact the health and safety of our residents, particularly those with existing health issues. When the heat index is 90°F, heat exhaustion is possible with prolonged exposure and/or physical activity. When it reaches 90° to 105°F, there is the possibility of sunstroke, heat cramps or heat exhaustion. Upon official notification of an excessive heat condition, the City of La Habra will open the Community Center as a “cooling center.” This cooling center will provide air conditioning (a cool environment) with access to water, restrooms and current news information. Excessive heat conditions are typically those with a heat index of 105°F or higher expected for three or more days. Community News: Notable Educator

I ns t ru c to r Spotlight:

K a ro n Th o m a s

Karon Thomas is a woman of many roles. Instructional aide for special education classes for the La Habra City School District, one-time president and active member of the La Habra Art Association, art teacher, Gary Center counselor and long-time recreation class instructor for the City of La Habra are just a few. Thomas came to California with her husband in the early ’60s. She attended Cerritos College and California State University, Fullerton, where she studied to be a psychiatric social worker, a goal that was born out of a lifelong urge to help people, she says. After giving birth to her son, she redirected her energy to raising him and finding other ways to be of service to her community.

One night she saw a belly dancer performing at a local restaurant and was inspired to learn. She took lessons and through her instructor became involved in the Middle Eastern Cultural Dance Association. When she first started teaching for the City in 1974, belly dance was at its peak of popularity. Her classes averaged 35 students each at the beginner and intermediate level, and 15 advanced students. The age of her students ranged from 12 to 72. At one point, she added up the number of years she’d taught, the number of classes she’d taught, and she realized that she probably taught 3,000 to

5,000 women to dance. What attracted her to belly dance? She sees it as a form of art whose theatrical and multicultural aspects appeal to her, and she also believes that exercise can be used to release negative energy from the body. When she wasn’t teaching belly dance, Thomas was teaching an exercise class at the local Methodist church, an easy movement class at the Fullerton YWCA, and art classes at local Montessori schools. In 2005, after 30 years, she resigned from teaching belly dance at the Community Center so that she and her husband could relocate to Arizona. Instead, the couple found themselves faced with a variety of unexpected challenges, and they stayed in La Habra. In 2009, Thomas returned to the Community Center with a new class, “Time Out for You” (formerly “Secrets of the Ages for Lifelong Beauty”). She teaches the techniques that have worked for her over the years that she believes will put participants in touch with their inner core, to make their lives as full and meaningful as possible, and help them to “survive with class,” she says. These include meditation, tai chi walking, tree of life work, acupressure face lift techniques; head, neck and shoulder massage, and journaling. Thomas’ class will meet on Mondays from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m., September 13th through October 4th at the Community Center (see page 34). The City also offers belly dance classes, taught by one of Thomas’ former students, on Wednesdays and Saturdays. To register for any of these classes, please call or visit the Community Center.

Salvia microphylla flower Salvia microphylla, which means “Little Leaf sage” in Latin, is a perennial native to central and northern Mexico and the southwestern states of Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. Some cultivars are known as Baby Sage, Graham's Sage, Hot Lips, and Red Summer Sage. It is a small evergreen shrub with green leaves and flowers in different colors of red, purple, and magenta. It blooms in late springtime and summer, with a second bloom in the fall. It grows best in full sun or partial shade and is very adaptable to elevation and location. It can grow to three feet tall with a spread of five feet wide at maturity and is hardy down to 15 degrees Fahrenheit. Salvia microphylla prefers moist but well draining soils. It should be planted in the spring, and once established, it will need to be watered once or twice a month in the summer.

Frank Capra’s award-winning 1947 film, It’s a Wonderful Life, exudes a retro-warmth not evident in all Christmas fables. Theatre guests become the studio audience as they reconnect with this classic story of love and redemption.
