Celebrating Success & What’s New in La Habra KaBOOM! Building Community By Building Playgrounds On Saturday, April 16th, 235 volunteers turned out to treat Montwood Park to a renovation. The City of La Habra and Friends of Family Health Center received a grant from KaBOOM!, a non-profit organization committed to building a playground within walking distance of every child in North America. KaBOOM! coordinates the playground construction and recruits a community funding partner for each project. Foresters Financial, an organization committed to helping families achieve financial security, was selected. This is the sixth project on which the City has collaborated with KaBOOM! and Foresters.

“Design Day” is the first step in the renovation process. Families from the neighborhood came together to determine the kind of equipment they wanted. Children drew pictures of their ideal playground; then parents were encouraged to share their ideas. On the build day, the project was divided into tasks, and groups of volunteers completed all phases of each task. In addition to building and installing playground equipment, volunteers planted landscaping, installed signs, moved piles of mulch, built furniture, two patio pads and a walkway, and painted designs on park walls, paths and sidewalks. Besides saving City funds, these projects are a great tool for bringing people together who might not otherwise meet.

Further, when a community is engaged in a common goal, it generates a sense of accomplishment, ownership and pride for having contributed toward the community, as well as a reduction of criminal activity and vandalism toward the site. Health & Wellness Program Helps La Habrans Thrive In January 2014, the La Habra Collaborative, an organization formed in 2013 to address health and social issues that affect La Habra residents, joined with the newly formed City of La Habra Move More, Eat Healthy committee to draft the La Habra Move More, Eat Healthy Five Year Initiative, a program that is designed to build a healthy community. Committee members represent the health industry that serves the greater La Habra area; founding members are from St. Jude Medical Center, Institute for Health Care Advancement, La Habra Collaborative, La Habra Family Resource Center, Friends of Family Health Center, and Southern California University of Health Sciences. Today the group also includes representatives from Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital

(PIH), Whittier; Orange County Department of Education; Orange County Health Care Agency; California Food Access; Community Action Council; Advancing the Seed; Caremore Care Center; and many more. Two years later and many events and programs down the road, and thanks to grants from St. June Medical Center, some of the accomplishments of the campaign include being designated a “Fit City” by the California League of Cities, the creation of an annual five-event health fair series for all segments of the community, the installation of outdoor fitness equipment and a KaBOOM! rebuild of the playground at Montwood Park, the establishment of a food and beverage policy with the City, involvement with the City’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan, and acquisition of funding for the renovation of Guadalupe Park. La Habra’s commitment to its residents’ health reflects the City’s motto, which is “a caring community”.

La Habrans enjoyed the return of American Crown Circus: Circus Osorio USA to the Market Place shopping center April 7th through 11th. The 18-year-old Las Vegas-based, family-owned circus is a one stage traveling operation with acrobats, magicians, motocross riders and clowns. This year’s show included a new troupe of Chinese acrobats who did amazing things with hoops, among other props. In addition to bringing family members of all ages together for a fun, traditional circus experience, a percentage of ticket sales will be used to support La Habra recreation and community programs throughout the year.

LA HABRA PREPAREDNESS 101

Gather Your Emergency Water Supply Water is an essential element to survival, so stocking water reserves and learning how to purify contaminated water should be a top priority in preparing for an emergency. Everyone’s water needs will differ depending upon age, physical condition, activity, diet and climate. A normally active person needs to drink at least two quarts of water each day; heat can double that amount. Children, pregnant women, and sick people require more water. Ideally, plan to store a total of at least one gallon per person, per day. Cats and dogs typically need 1 gallon for 3 days; however, they do not require purified drinking water. You will also need water to clean yourself and to cook. You may use swimming pool water for bathing, but should not use it for drinking unless it has been boiled or distilled.

water storage. To learn how, visit www.ready.gov/water. Store all water in a cool, dark place in your home, office, and car and plan to replace purchased water supplies according to their expiration label. Replace personally prepared water every 6 months, unless is maintained in a frozen state. Stay healthy and safe. Never risk dehydration; it can cause serious health problems. Even if water supplies are running low, drink the amount you need today and look for more tomorrow. Only drink clean water. There are steps you can take to make contaminated water safe to use. You can purchase personal or household water purification devices, or water purification tablets at most sporting goods stores. Learn where the water shut-off valve to your home is. If you hear reports of broken water or sewage lines, shut off the water to your house in order to avoid letting unsafe water enter your home.

Gather and store your emergency water supply. Commercially purchased water is the safest option; you can purchase packaged water supplies with shelf lives as long as 15 years from emergency supply vendors. Do not open the containers until you’re ready to use them. You can also prepare your own

Instructor Profiles Nikki Hoelsch Beginning Line Dance & Beginning/Intermediate Line Dance Line Dance instructor Nikki Hoelsch grew up in the Bay Area of Northern California and relocated to La Mirada to attend Biola University, where she completed her degree in Christian Education. A few years ago, one of her friends took her to The Ranch, a country western club in Anaheim, where she first saw people line dancing, and she immediately knew it was something she had to do. She learned to line dance every way she could — going to clubs five nights a week, attending classes, and watching YouTube videos. She began teaching her Beginning Line Dance class at the Community Center two years ago, and added her Beginning/ Intermediate Line Dance class during the Winter 2016 session. Her favorite things about teaching her classes are seeing others discover how fun it can be, and even more, seeing how it brings people together from different backgrounds who would never meet otherwise. “I have had people from ages 16 to 80 years in class, couples, mothers and daughters, siblings… there aren’t too many things that bring people together like that,” she observes. Taking the skills one has learned in class to a club can be intimidating; she recommends The Ranch on Fridays and Saturdays, because it has a good live band and includes a lot of easier dances, or Fullerton’s In Cahoots on Tuesdays, because there is a lot of room on the dance floor to learn. “We are so lucky here in Southern California, there are so many places to dance!” she adds. Beginning Line Dance meets on Mondays, 7:00-8:30 pm, June 6th-July 11th, and Beginning/Intermediate Line Dance meets the same day and time, July 25th-August 29th. See pg. 37 for more details.

Lighthouse Gymanstics Tumbling Toddlers Owner Nathaniel Freund participated in gymnastics for five years as a child. After taking a break, he came back to it as a teen and fell in love with the sport. Because most high schools had discontinued competitive gymnastics programs at that point, he competed in a private club. When he was 16, the City of Santa Fe Springs hired him first as a contract class instructor, then as an employee, and he has never stopped coaching since then. In 2003, he added contract classes at the City of Norwalk, and by 2008 had added contract classes in Whittier, La Mirada and Bellflower. He also founded Lighthouse Gymnastics that year, and in 2009, the studio opened at its current location in Whittier. Lighthouse Gymnastics has offered classes for kids’ tumbling and gymnastics classes through La Habra since 2013, holding those classes at the activity building in Whittier’s Parnell Park, at the intersection of Scott St. and Lambert Rd. Lighthouse is something of a family business, having employed Nathaniel’s siblings and his mother over the years, as well as previous students who are now adults. “The thing that I enjoy most about teaching gymnastics is that it can help anyone, because it provides good all-around strength and flexibility for any sport you want to participate in,” he says. Lighthouse Gymnastics holds Tumbling Toddlers classes for kids ages onefive years on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings and afternoons, as well as Gymnastics classes for kids ages five-18 years and Tumbling for Cheer on Tuesday evenings. All classes are held at Parnell Park. See pgs. 31 & 33 for more information. Summer 2016 | Life in La Habra | 23
