2018 Annual Report | 2019 Calendar

LIVE IT•GIVE IT

Dear Friends of LifeGift: Welcome to our 2018 Annual Report and 2019 Calendar, “Life2: Live It. Give It.” Throughout the pages that follow, our friends reflect a “live it and give it” message; whether it’s a story about a lifesaving donor who gave the ultimate gift, a physician donation advocate who expands the boundaries of what’s possible to save lives, a transplant recipient who is living life to the fullest in honor of his/her donor or those who wait patiently with hope for their second chance.

recovery and transplantation. Building infrastructure to support our growth will continue to be a priority, following the opening of our futuristic 18,000-square-foot facility in Fort Worth, Texas, this past spring. Growing our leadership team and deepening our bench strength is helping us to uphold LifeGift as one of the leading and largest OPOs in the country. We have been intentional about our actions to drive progress, and we are energized to move LifeGift to the next level.

And within the walls of LifeGift, we are living and giving it, too. As we live out our core values of being passionate, compassionate and professional, we give of our time and our expertise to those in our community who are counting on us. As we examine and refine our best efforts and elevate and hire new talent, we are able to offer hope to more people than ever before.

As other areas of our organization continue to evolve to meet present day challenges, our communication methods are also changing. This will be the last issue of the LifeGift calendar that we print – as we migrate to newer ways of communicating to effectively educate, impact and inform the community about organ, eye and tissue donation. Communication platforms have evolved rapidly over the last several years, and we are adapting our strategies to ensure our messaging retains its ability to reach and inspire our community to offer hope. The power of story will continue through innovative ways of reaching our community.

For us to be able to continually live it and give it, we need to be creative, nimble and forward-thinking across the organization, looking at new ways to optimize donation. Across every department throughout LifeGift, from accounting to clinical operations, we are innovating and evolving so we can understand the challenges of tomorrow and move confidently into the future. As we glimpse into 2019 and beyond, we look to our continued collaboration and partnership with LifeNet Health for new and resourceful ways to help more people through tissue transplantation. We also will continue our deep commitment to emerging research in the areas of organ preservation, donor management and bone marrow

We thank our talented and dedicated LifeGift staff, our board of directors, hospital and transplant partners, caregivers, Ambassadors of Hope, friends, community leaders and so many others who help us live it and give it, making Life2 a possibility each and every day. With warm regards, Kevin A. Myer, MSHA

New Fort Worth Office Opens, Making Its Mark in Heart of Medical District Throughout 2018 LifeGift continued to set a course for its future, including the opening of a new office building in Fort Worth, Texas. The 18,000-square-foot facility, which is strategically located in close proximity to the various hospitals in Fort Worth’s Medical District, enables LifeGift to recover tissue on site, a major milestone in LifeGift’s history. On Tuesday, May 15, the building was officially dedicated with a grand opening and ribbon cutting event. The modernistic campus includes a memorial garden – funded in part by two donor families and the new facility’s builder, Steve Hawkins – designed as a place of reflection and respite for anyone who needs it. Artwork, created by Ambassadors of Hope under the direction of public artist and LifeGift supporter Reginald Adams, depicts snapshots from LifeGift’s Donate Life Texas 2nd Chance Run, a 16-year tradition in the Fort Worth community. LifeGift would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who made the opening of the building possible including Jessica Leibold, senior director of purchasing and facilities, who expertly managed the project to its opening.

Our New Partner in Hope: LifeNet Health

As LifeGift continued on its course in 2018, it entered into a new partnership with LifeNet Health, a nonprofit, global leader in regenerative medicine and the world’s most trusted provider of transplant solutions. Headquartered in Virginia Beach, Virginia, LifeNet Health’s mission is simple: saving lives, restoring health and giving hope. “Our values and mission are closely aligned with those of LifeNet Health,” says Kevin Myer, president and CEO of LifeGift. “As LifeGift continues to evolve into an innovative and forward-thinking organization, it just makes sense that we enter into partnerships with organizations that mirror ingenuity and advancements.” For more information about LifeNet Health, please visit LifeNetHealth.org.

Taking Care of Our Families Each and every family that crosses our path is precious to us. We enter their lives during a tumultuous storm with waves of intense grief and stay with them long after their initial encounter with us as part of our comprehensive Donor Family Services program. Donor families supported by LifeGift receive a series of mailings during the year after the donor’s death, which include: • An initial packet containing donation outcome information, grief literature and the offer to be sent a sun catcher, a joyful and artistic memorial in honor of their loved one’s generosity • A holiday mailing • A one-year anniversary card • A survey to share their experiences with LifeGift We invite donor families to attend our annual Donor Remembrance Ceremony, an event that honors the lives and legacies of those who have offered the gift of life as organ,

eye and tissue donors. Families also receive information and an invitation to participate in our 5K and 1-mile fun run, the Donate Life Texas 2nd Chance Run, to honor their loved one alongside those waiting for transplants and hundreds of grateful recipients. LifeGift is glad to provide the opportunity for donor families to correspond with and potentially meet transplant recipients. Over the past year, we’ve been able to send 748 letters between donor families and transplant recipients and organize several recipient and donor family meetings. For more information about the Donor Family Services program and to be connected with community grief resources, please reach out to our team at any time via email at donorfamilyservices@lifegift.org or via phone at 713-523-GIFT (4438).

“I hope they know the choice they made saved our princess.”

Anastazja “Ana” Norris spent much of her young life in the hospital battling vesicoureteral reflux. But after receiving a new kidney on May 23, 2016, at age 8, she can now be a normal fourth-grader, attending school, riding roller coasters and going on trips overseas – something her parents, Joe and Sagirah, never imagined was possible. The Norris family lives and gives as organ and tissue donation advocates – volunteering for organizations, including LifeGift, and signing up 122 teammates for “Team Once Upon a Kidney” in the Donate Life Texas 2nd Chance Run. Sagirah is even thinking about becoming a living kidney donor. See the full story at LifeGift.org/NorrisFamily

“We feel blessed he could give his gift to others.”

Kristen and Travis Cowan’s 13-month-old Rylen, normally always smiling, woke up one day with a fever. He was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis and due to an immune deficiency was unable to fight it. Just a week later, Rylen passed away. Yet, his donated organs saved five lives. “His gift was so precious to us,” Kristen said. “We feel blessed that he could give his gift to others.” Now, the Cowans keep giving through their Smilin’ Rylen Foundation, so far raising over $30,000 for LifeGift, Emma’s Hugs, Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep and the Ronald McDonald House – organizations that helped them through their toughest times. “Giving the organs of a loved one is the ultimate act of love.”

Iona Smith has been both donor family member and recipient. Cornea transplants restored her vision in her early forties. Her little brother, Steven Rice, was an organ and tissue donor when he passed away in 2003. And a kidney transplant saved Iona’s life in 2017 after her own kidneys shut down. “I am overwhelmed by the generosity and love that a stranger gave to me,” she said. “The transplant has awakened my heart to the needs of others without expecting anything in return.” Today, Iona lives and gives on the ministerial staff at St. James AME Church, as a chaplain for the Phoenix Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol and as a LifeGift volunteer. “I got to hear my daughter’s heartbeat again.”

Emily Avila adored her graceful, fun, generous daughter, Cassie Contreras. Cassie loved dancing and wearing cowboy boots, and she registered as an organ and tissue donor when she received her driver license. Tragically, Cassie passed away at 17 after a car accident; her organs saved five lives. Cassie’s family met both her heart recipient and her lung recipient and were able to listen to her heart again. “That was the best feeling I had since she passed,” Emily said. Now, Emily lives and gives by serving as a medical assistant and sharing Cassie’s story. “Many people have told me that they have decided to become donors. They truly try to #LiveLikeCassie.” See the full story at LifeGift.org/EmilyAvila

“You have to rely on yourself to make a change.”

Dr. George W. Williams has seen the power of organ and tissue donation firsthand. As a critical care physician and anesthesiologist, he’s cared for both organ donors and recipients, and he registered as a donor years ago. “If you know anyone who is waiting for an organ or who has died waiting for an organ, you know that you have to rely on yourself to make a change.” The husband and father of three works to make change as a champion for donation in his hospital, as a member of the LifeGift Medical Advisory Board, and by being active in his church. His philosophy for living and giving is simple: “Put yourself in someone else’s shoes.” See the full story at LifeGift.org/DrGeorgeWilliams

“I was determined to live.”

Gary Garcia was told he had two weeks to live. Various HIV medications had destroyed his gallbladder and then his liver. But he said, “I was determined to live.” Gary and his husband, Chad, fought to get Gary care for both the liver failure and the HIV, stretching two weeks into three years. Finally, Gary received a new liver on Dec. 6, 2016. Now, he lives and gives as an ambassador for the HOPE Act, which allows HIV-positive people to donate organs to fellow HIV patients, and by educating others about donation. “This has given me a beautiful life,” Gary said. “My organ donor saved my life, which allows me to keep his legacy alive.” See the full story at LifeGift.org/GaryGarcia

“¡Ánimo raza! – Cheer up, people!”

Jorge Tamez always supported and encouraged everyone around him. His motto was “¡Ánimo raza! – Cheer up, people!” Jorge ultimately gave his life rescuing horses from the floods of Hurricane Harvey, and as a registered organ and tissue donor, he saved lives. Now, his family hopes to preserve his legacy: “He inspired me by helping others and not expecting something in return,” said his sister, Dariana Tamez, a student pursuing her bachelor’s degree. “The only thing I can do is persevere in gratitude to him and to God by serving our communities,” said his wife, Margarita Tovar, an assistant principal in Houston ISD’s Fifth Ward. “My faith gets me through each day and pushes me forward.”

Jill Kolb is a giver. On top of working full time, owning a ranch and raising two girls with her husband, John, she’s president of a small nonprofit and of her local homeowners association; board member for the local school district’s Education Foundation; a LifeGift volunteer; and a regular Secret Santa for strangers. “It makes my heart happier to help someone else,” Jill said. Her friends and family hope desperately to give back now that Jill needs a kidney transplant. So far, 40 people have been tested as living donors, but Jill is difficult to match. Still, she stays positive, trusting in God’s plan and using every second she has to live and give to others. See the full story at LifeGift.org/JillKolb

“He saved my life and gave me four years to keep on living.”

Karlie Sageth de Mejia has been in and out of the hospital all her life due to a chronic lung condition called bronchiectasis. On Oct. 4, 2014, Karlie received a double-lung transplant from Kenneth “Buddy” Wentworth, a 16-year-old Arizona motocross racer. Though Karlie’s body started rejecting the lungs in 2016, Buddy’s gift has given her precious time and the opportunity to marry her fiancé, Elwin, on Christmas Day in 2017. Now, with her purple hair and winning smile, Karlie shares her story, encouraging others to register as donors in hopes of gaining another chance for a long, happy life with her husband. “There’s always one person whose mind I can change.”

When Melvin Morrison, a high school teacher and coach, was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, he said he felt weak, frail and literally helpless. Ultimately, organ donation would change everything – first, a double-lung transplant from an anonymous donor in 2012, then a kidney from his daughter, Madelyn, three years later. “Receiving a transplant has enabled me to enjoy life again,” he said. Now, Melvin lives and gives by volunteering for LifeGift and CHI St. Luke’s Health – Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center’s Heart Exchange and by sharing his story with his students: “There is always at least one person whose mind I can change about organ donation.” See the full story at LifeGift.org/MelvinMorrison

“The only thing I could think of was making her healthy again.”

Ross Witty is a huge sports fan, but the team that’s most important to him is his family. When his daughter, Kimmy, needed a new kidney at age 12, he didn’t sit on the bench. In November 2011, Ross gave a piece of himself so his daughter could live. Today, Kimmy, 19, is in college. She lives and gives through her church and on mission trips, and the family started the Children’s Transplant Initiative to support other families undergoing the transplant process. “While people tell us we are a blessing, it is we who are truly blessed.” See the full story at LifeGift.org/WittyFamily

“We gained another family.”

“Walter Williams is a family man, with five children, one grandchild and soon, a stepdaughter with his fiancée, Catrina Sisneros. But Walter also knows the pain of losing a child. In 2009, his 6-month-old son Omar passed away. Walter and Omar’s mother, Yolanda Arguello, decided to donate his organs. That gift returned to bless them when they met Leighton Harper, the boy who received Omar’s heart, in 2017. Walter held the boy and cried, and in that moment, “We gained another family,” Walter said. Today, Walter lives and gives by volunteering for LifeGift and attending car shows benefitting worthy causes. See the full story at LifeGift.org/WalterWilliams

Grants and Contributions LifeGift’s board of directors and staff wish to express sincere appreciation to the following individuals and organizations who generously contributed to our programs in 2018.

Donate Life Texas Offers Hope to the LGBTQ Community In 2018, Donate Life Texas (DLT) led the way to reach the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) community about organ, eye and tissue donation by participating in various PRIDE events throughout the state. DLT is among only a handful of state teams across the country making it a priority to reach this audience. Blue PMS 278 U 39c14m

Green PMS 367 U 32c 59y

DLT had its presence known at PRIDE festivals and parades throughout Texas – from the Panhandle, to the Valley, to San Antonio, to Houston and the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. DLT staff and volunteers registered donors and educated this community that YES, they can register as organ, eye and tissue donors – regardless of who they love. “A huge thank you to the DLT supporting organizations for helping to spread the Donate Life Pride unified message,” said Kim Charles, executive director of DLT. “Participating in events like these across the state of Texas has really shown the fantastic way Texas is striving to save and heal lives.”
