Laura is a self-taught photographer who has been behind the camera for seven years and documenting love stories for the past five. Based in Southwest Michigan, she's always ready to travel wherever her couples take her. Laura’s photography style is movement-oriented and editorial. She says, “I’m all about chasing the sun at golden hour and dancing the night away at your wedding. You bring the love, and I’ll bring my camera.”
The Real Wedding of
MYCHAEL & JEFF HICKEY
“The best advice we got that should be passed on was while your guests are eating, DON’T go to every table and take a picture, instead run away and take a moment to yourselves because you’re FINALLY MARRIED. Try to get your photographer to get a few golden hour pictures during that time, then go mingle with the tables! We promise, they will not even realize you’re gone for a brief time.”

Inspired by romance and Michigan’s autumn magic, this creative team set out to bring a French-inspired style shoot to life—right in the heart of the Midwest. “I was drawn to the idea of combining natural beauty with an elegant, almost cinematic French dinner party vibe,” says Lydia, the photographer behind the shoot. “I envisioned rich reds and soft silvers woven throughout the details, creating a sense of timeless romance.” From the start, Lydia and Jessica, the planner for this shoot, had a unique detail in mind: a vintage car that sits out front of the venue, which they knew would be the perfect addition. The venue itself, with its elegant architecture, proved to be an ideal backdrop for the European-inspired aesthetic. And the fashion? Each gown chosen highlights a different facet of classic French style, adding to the charm and sophistication of the entire shoot.
WHAT WE love
Despite the risk of inclement weather, this team was able to pull off a spectacular outdoor shoot. We love the unique and elegant feel of dining outdoors, especially with such a stunning castle-like backdrop. For the tablescape, Fear No More collected all the vintage pieces they could find to make this shoot feel even more opulent. “This included vintage goblets, china, flatware, candelabras, salt and pepper shakers, and silver platters—each piece added a layer of old-world charm that perfectly complemented our French-inspired theme,” Lydia and Jessica rave.

What inspired your business? What keeps you motivated?
"We were both shooting weddings when we met and knew pretty quickly we wanted to create something together. We named our business Pavé—a mix of our passion and love. It also happens to be a style of ring, symbolizing small, intentional pieces coming together to create something lasting. That felt right. We’re storytellers at heart, drawn to weddings that reflect real, authentic love. Our own wedding pushed us to rethink structure and flow, and now we help other couples do the same—with honesty, creativity and care."
Tell us about your experience/skills.
"We bring two distinct strengths to the weddings we document. Bethany has been photographing weddings for over 15 years and brings a sharp creative eye and an instinct for capturing moments with elegance and depth. Her images are intentional, emotional and built to last. Stephen has over 20 years of experience in photography and video, starting as an Army photographer. His work is rooted in real-time storytelling—honest, candid and grounded. Together, we offer a blend of artistry and authenticity that helps couples feel seen, celebrated and completely themselves."
As a business owner, what do you wish to accomplish with your customers? What can a couple look forward to when booking you?
"We want our couples to feel like they can fully show up as themselves— and know that who they are is enough. Our work is rooted in authenticity, not perfection. When someone books us, they can expect a collaborative experience built on trust and honest communication. We care about understanding your story, your values and what matters most to you—so the photos and films we deliver don’t just look good, they feel true to who you are."
Give us an overview of your services. What makes your business unique?
"We offer both photography and videography with a style that blends creative direction and honest documentation. We’re not here to stage your day—we’re here to help you experience it. What makes our work different is how we focus on emotional storytelling. We’re not just looking for the pretty moments; we’re paying attention to the ones that feel like you. We don’t have a one-size-fits-all formula, because no two couples are the same— and your photos and video shouldn’t be either."
Tell us about your favorite part of your job. What keeps it fun for you?
"We love the energy of a wedding day—how it’s equal parts chaos, beauty and emotion. There’s something special about being close to the real moments: the nervous quiet before the ceremony, the laughter during toasts, the way time seems to slow down right after the first look. No two days are the same, and we never take for granted that we get to document stories that matter. That mix of connection and creativity is what keeps this work meaningful—and fun."
What do you love about the industry you work in?
"Weddings are an ever-changing industry and one that lets people lean into the creative or go more standard traditional style. That creates plenty of niche areas where your inner artist can thrive. Weddings are fast paced and make you think on your feet, which can feel overwhelming but also reaffirms that you ARE that good - that you can show up and do beautiful things in any situation, no matter the circumstances. I love a good challenge!"
What’s the most common question you get from couples? What’s your answer to it?
"A lot of couples ask, 'What if we’re awkward in front of the camera?' And the short answer is: that’s completely normal. Most people aren’t used to being photographed, especially on such an emotional day. We don’t expect you to be models. Our job is to help you feel present and comfortable—not perform. We guide when needed, but mostly we’re paying attention, staying out of the way and letting real moments happen. That’s where the best photos and video come from."
What are the best tips you have for helping couples prepare for their big day? Any other words of wisdom to share?
"Start by thinking about what actually matters to you—and build around that. Not every tradition or timeline will make sense for your day, and that’s okay. Make space for the things that bring you joy and leave room for quiet moments, too. The day goes
by fast, but it doesn’t have to feel like a blur. Trust your instincts, don’t sweat perfection and remember: the most meaningful weddings are the ones that feel true to who you are."
Take a moment to brag about something you’re proud of.
"For our own wedding, we wanted everyone gathered around one long table for dinner—but the venue didn’t have them. So we built the tables ourselves. We also flipped the traditional timeline: dinner came first, followed by a sunset ceremony and dancing under the stars. It felt completely true to us, and that experience shaped how we approach this work. We’re proud to help couples create a day that reflects who they are—and even more proud when they say the photos and video bring it all rushing back."
How do you calm the nerves of anxious customers? What do you do to make them feel comfortable?
"Most people feel a little nervous in front of a camera—it’s completely normal. We’ve found that comfort starts before the wedding day. We spend time getting to know our couples so they don’t feel like they’re being watched by strangers. On the day itself, we stay calm, read the room and only step in when it’s helpful. Our goal is to make space for people to be themselves—not to perform, just to be present. That’s where the best moments come from, anyway."
What are your future goals for your business? How do you see it growing in the future?
"We’re focused on deepening the work we’re already doing— connecting with couples who care about authenticity, presence and meaning. Growth for us doesn’t mean taking on more just for the sake of it. We keep our calendar intentionally limited so we can give each couple the time and attention they deserve. In the future, we’d love to take on more destination weddings and continue refining the way we tell stories through photo and video— always with care, curiosity and intention."

Desert Western Dreams
Our Grand Rapids Photographer Collaborative Style Shoot Event
We were so excited to host our sixth Photographer Collaborative Style Shoot Event where photographers from all around the Midwest were invited to gain style shoot experience and grow their connections with other experts in the wedding industry. Working with planner Allison Kelley of Your Little Details, lead photographer, Chrystin Melanie Photography, and Custer, Michigan venue, The Cox Ranch, this talented team truly brought their A-game! Take a look at the results from this Western, desert-inspired day, and read on to see how you can get involved in our next collaborative style shoot!
The Vision
With The Cox Ranch established as our venue, Allison couldn’t resist leaning into a desert Western theme—but with a fresh, modern twist. Inspired by the setting’s rustic charm, she set out to create a look that celebrated Western style while breaking from tradition. Think custom Western hats, boots, fringe-detailed dresses and plenty of cacti woven into the décor. The result is a bold, personalitypacked aesthetic that blends laid-back vibes with unforgettable, non-traditional wedding flair!
CHRYSTIN MELANIE PHOTOGRAPHY
The Venue
Choosing the right venue can truly set the tone for a photoshoot, and The Cox Ranch was nothing short of incredible. With its ample space, versatile layout and fantastic rental pieces from sister company Eden Woods Wedding Rentals, it offered everything needed to bring the vision to life. While the term “barn” might conjure up images of something rustic, this modern venue is anything but. Allison gushes, “The Cox Ranch has beautiful polished concrete floors mixed with modern white walls and rental pieces—it was perfect for a stunning wedding shoot!”
The Decor '
Carefully curating every element, Allison designed vignettes that perfectly captured a desert Western vibe with a fresh, summery twist. The original vision featured a muted palette of rich oranges, terracottas and deep reds, reflected beautifully in the mustard yellow plates and burnt orange napkins. To add a soft, unexpected touch, hints of blue were incorporated through the glassware. The bright oranges and yellows of the florals brought a summery, sun-soaked energy to the design. AAYS Event Rentals elevated the table settings with stone plates, elegant glassware and flatware that highlighted the rust tones, muted yellows and soft blues, while Eden Woods Rentals provided stunning handmade tables, vintage furniture, exquisite bars and chairs that completed the design.
CHRYSTIN MELANIE PHOTOGRAPHY
The Florals
When it came to the florals, Blooms – All Things Flowers made the vision shine, with cacti as the standout element that truly brought this Western theme to life! “Most couples don't opt for nontraditional pieces, and I really liked that we were able to incorporate them in all of our vignettes,” Allison explains. The bright, vivid, summery palette added a lively pop of color, while still beautifully highlighting the muted terracottas and mustard tones for the perfect blend of bold and earthy vibes.
The Stationery
The stationery for our shoot, also designed by Allison, perfectly captured the essence of desert Western charm. From fonts featuring playful spurs to hand-illustrated desert scenes and bold animal skull motifs, every detail reflected the rugged beauty of the theme. Allison’s artistry shone through in the paper goods, tying together the look with a balance of authenticity and style that fit seamlessly into the shoot’s aesthetic. And we especially love the cactus and horseshoe-shaped place cards that added in a fun, playful touch!
CHRYSTIN MELANIE PHOTOGRAPHY
The Looks
The dresses for this shoot were everything we dreamed of—La Bridal Loft absolutely nailed the vision with fringe, lace details and gorgeous appliqués that tied each of the looks together perfectly. A short lace romper brought a fun, playful vibe, while the fringe detailing on other gowns was a stylish nod to the Western theme. Two dresses included subtle floral appliqués that added a soft, romantic touch and echoed the vibrant summer florals throughout the shoot. Ashley Burns Artistries struck the perfect balance of boho and glam in the models’ three hairstyles, each bringing their own creative flair yet complementing the theme beautifully. The intricate braided styles lent themselves to the whimsical side, while the elegant updo played on the romantic side of the shoot. All of the models’ makeup was kept natural yet chic, enhancing the vision perfectly.

The Catering & Desserts
Gandia’s Catering went all out with their immaculate catering setup! Priding themselves on a sophisticated farm-to-table experience, their exquisite selection was tailored to perfection. Allison shares, “Elevated comfort food is a big trend we're seeing in 2025, moving away from your traditional chicken, fish or steak meals!” At our shoot, we were treated to a mouthwatering spread of American and Mexican-style tacos loaded up with goodies like chicken, carnitas, avocado—you name it! Mouthwatering sides of Michigan-grown salad, sautéed asparagus and fresh bread rounded out the spread.
The simple two-tiered cake is all-white and adorned with florals for added interest. In addition to this confection, our dessert table donned adorable rustic-themed cookies, to tie in the Western feel.

What inspired your business? What keeps you motivated?
"VanderHoff Studio was born out of the desire to not just take beautiful photos, but to give couples something even more valuable: peace of mind, a sense of direction, imagery that feels like a living and breathing moment.
What keeps me going? My clients. Truly, watching couples light up when they see their galleries - that's my fuel. The excitement, the nerves, the chaos, the tears, the laughter... I thrive on turning all of that into timeless art."
Tell us about your experience/skills.
"I have years of experience in weddings, editorial shoots and guiding even the shyest souls to feel like they belong in front of my lens."

As a business owner, what do you wish to accomplish with your customers? What can a couple look forward to when booking you?
"I don't show up with a camera. I show up with a strategy and an intention to capture the most heartfelt moments. That is absolutely my goal. Brides often comment on how effortless their experience was with me. I simply want couples to be themselves, and I will catch the best of that."
Give us an overview of your services. What makes your business unique? "I focus on capturing the raw and unrepeated, but I also have space for editorial flair. I think it's the perfect balance of candid moments and editorial edge that makes me unique in this saturated space."
Tell us about your favorite part of your job. What keeps it fun for you? "Every couple brings new energy. I never run out of ideas."
What do you love about the industry you work in?
"I love that my workspace is different every weekend and that there is no limit to where my job can take me."
What’s the most common question you get from couples? What’s your answer to it?
"Definitely the comments about being awkward or not knowing what to do. My answer: I've got you! With your story and my vision and guidance, there is no way you will feel lost."
What are the best tips you have for helping couples prepare for their big day? Any other words of wisdom to share? "First, pad your timeline. Something will run late. By padding it, you will make it OK and less stressful. Next, only allow people who calm your energy into your gettingready spaces. Everyone else can stay out! Finally, try getting a good night's sleep and make sure to hydrate. This makes a huge difference."
" I JUST WANT TO KEEP TELLING STORIES THAT MATTER."
Take a moment to brag about something you’re proud of.
"I'm very proud to build a business that runs on trust, talent and genuine connection. Clients are my friends and other vendors are collaborators. I've been published and praised. I'm just taking it as a sign to keep going."
How do you calm the nerves of anxious customers? What do you do to make them feel comfortable?
"The secret to staying calm is preparation and trust. When you can rely on your vendors to handle the day, you can concentrate on what's really important. I don't have one single trick, but I do advocate for my clients and their interests if needed."
What are your future goals for your business? How do you see it growing in the future?
"My goal is to keep expanding. In the last year, I have introduced many additional services like videography, drone, 35mm film, 360 short video content and I'm planning to expand even further creatively. I just want to keep telling stories that matter."

When it came time to choose a wedding venue, Jenny and James didn’t have to look far—just back to a meaningful date-night memory. The Ultimate Beaut y Prep Chec k list
Have you heard that saying “Love looks good on you?” Have you ever noticed that people in love not only seem happier, but they appear more attractive? The term most often used is “glowing.”
It’s common for friends and family to comment on your glowing face and the “stars” in your eyes right after you get engaged. According to science, these aren’t just things that people say. Studies indicate that emotions directly affect the body’s overall health. Overall health, of course, is directly linked to your physical appearance. This is all attributed to body chemicals like dopamine and serotonin.
Dopamine and serotonin are frequently called the “feel-good neurotransmitters.” Neurotransmitters control hormones. And what do you know? Hormones affect your skin. Dopamine is responsible for those bright, shining eyes as it is the brain’s pleasure chemical producing feelings like extreme happiness and excitement. Serotonin is the hormone that triggers your mood. Do you break out due to extreme stress? Your serotonin levels are probably suffering.
Post-engagement, you are most likely looking as great as you are feeling. Fast forward 10 to 12 months and every day life and wedding planning can get in the way of your glowing skin and star-filled eyes. Not to mention that the stress hormones can induce breakouts and sleepless nights which trigger bags under your eyes and result in pale skin.
Fortunately (and sometimes, unfortunately!) skin and beauty companies have made a fortune developing and marketing products and services that can combat and conquer most of this.
IT’S HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO START YOUR BEAUTY ROUTINE AS SOON AS YOU'RE ENGAGED—OR AT LEAST SIX MONTHS BEFORE YOU SAY “I DO.”
HAIR IS THE MOST DIFFICULT PROCESS TO UNDO OR REPAIR BEFORE THE WEDDING DAY. It takes months to grow out so if you’re envisioning wearing your hair up, commit to growing it out as soon as possible. This is especially true if you have bangs—you may really love them now, but think of your wedding photos in years to come, especially if you’re having an outdoor wedding. Even if you are patiently waiting for it to grow, you should still schedule a few trims. Find a hair color and cut that you are comfortable with. Experimentation within a month of your wedding is a big no-no. Settle on a hair color you love at least two months before your wedding day and if necessary, get a touch up at least two weeks in advance. DEEP CONDITIONING TREATMENTS WILL LIMIT HAIR DAMAGE AND BREAKAGE, AND WILL ENSURE THAT YOUR HAIR IS LOOKING ITS BEST. You can opt for regular conditioning at home with a basic product, but feel free to splurge for at least one professional hair mask.
WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR FORMAL HAIRSTYLE FOR THE BIG DAY, START COLLECTING REALISTIC PHOTOS OF POTENTIAL POSSIBILITIES. Did you know there are tons of virtual hair websites available so you can upload your actual photo and try on tons of different colors, cuts and styles? This is a great way to envision what your hair will look like in your wedding photos. When you’ve narrowed it down to a few of your favorites, schedule a consultation with your stylist for his or her opinion on what would look and work best for you. Then set up a practice run.
Face
There are so many do’s and don’ts when it comes to skin care. ESTABLISHING A HEALTHY, SUN-PROOF, ANTI-AGING, HYDRATING SKIN CARE ROUTINE IS NOT ONLY ESSENTIAL TO YOUR WEDDING DAY, BUT TO THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. If you are struggling with acne, scarring or skin conditions and you haven’t already, consult with a dermatologist or esthetician right away. Together, you can devise a plan of attack to get your skin where you want it to be—acne free, hydrated and youthful.
Regularly exfoliating dead skin allows new skin cells to emerge to the surface. HOWEVER, DON’T EXFOLIATE WITHIN A WEEK OF YOUR BIG DAY. Sometimes when the new skin cells emerge, so do all of the little ugly hidden things below the surface like pimples. Also, if you can find room in your budget, try to schedule a facial or two—but again, avoid having one too soon to your date. If you can’t afford a spa treatment, opt for the D.I.Y. spa products that you can do at home. Be sure to check reviews on each product so you know exactly what you’re getting before it’s applied to your sensitive skin.
AT THE VERY LEAST, INVEST IN A GENTLE FACE WASH, ONCE-A-WEEK EXFOLIATING WASH, RECOMMENDED MOISTURIZER AND UNDER-EYE CREAM TO ELIMINATE PUFFINESS AND DARK CIRCLES. And of course, hydrating yourself with plenty of H20 increases blood flow to the skin and purifies the body by removing toxins.
Nails
Chances are, you will be getting your nails professionally done before the big day. However, there are plenty of pre-wedding tasks you can do to grow your nails. VITAMINS SUCH AS BIOTIN BOOST CRITICAL NAIL PROTEIN WHICH IS THE BUILDING BLOCK OF NAILS. CUTICLE OIL MOISTURIZES NAILS AND THE SURROUNDING SKIN. YOU SHOULD ALSO MAKE SURE TO KEEP YOUR HANDS HYDRATED WITH LOTION, ESPECIALLY DURING THE COLD WINTER MONTHS WHEN SKIN TENDS TO CRACK. When it comes to choosing a nail polish color on your big day, try to avoid bold, loud colors. Your nails will be front and center in many photographs, including holding the flowers and exchanging the rings.
Waxing
Your eyes are the window to your soul. Your eyebrows are the frame. You can have the most beautiful eyes in the world, but if you don’t have shapely eyebrows, no one will notice. If you already have eyebrows that you love, keep doing what you’re doing. GET A WAX AND EYEBROW TRIM A WEEK BEFORE THE WEDDING, JUST IN CASE YOUR SKIN BREAKS OUT FROM THE WAX. If you don’t have shapely eyebrows, start eyebrow rehab this very minute. Unfortunately, this often requires leaving your brows to grow out wildly and untamed to allow your technician to start shaping them how you like.
As far as the other waxing areas go, like legs and the bikini line, most estheticians ask that you do not shave for approximately four weeks before your appointment. You may also want to make sure you do it once before your wedding wax because word on the street is that the first time is a little painful!
Tanning
While we’re on the subject of skin care, you are likely experiencing an overwhelming temptation to jump into a tanning bed. WITH RECENT SUNLESS TANNING OPTIONS AND LOTIONS ON THE MARKET, THERE REALLY IS NO EXCUSE TO PUT YOUR SKIN AT RISK FROM HARMFUL UV RAYS. Spray tanning and tanning lotions have progressed significantly since the days of cringe-worthy tans. If you use a tanning bed or even tan outdoors, your skin will obviously turn darker. But this darkened skin is a result of you altering your skin cells—they darken only when they are damaged or under attack. As you might imagine, this is not at all healthy for your skin. And since you’re already enduring much preparation to get your skin healthy, skip the tanning bed. IF YOU DO OPT FOR A SPRAY TAN, WE RECOMMEND GETTING A TRIAL SPRAY TAN A MONTH BEFORE THE WEDDING AND THEN A FINAL SPRAY THREE TO FOUR DAYS PRIOR TO THE WEDDING. Don’t forget to exfoliate your skin before applying a spray tan or tanning lotion— it removes the dead skin cells so your color is applied to fresh, new skin.

DIETING AND CARDIO SEEM TO BE THE POPULAR STRATEGIES. BUT DON’T RULE OUT STRENGTH TRAINING AS PART OF YOUR ROUTINE. STRENGTH TRAINING ALSO BURNS CALORIES AND TONES YOUR MUSCLES SIMULTANEOUSLY. The majority of women tend to notice their arms in photos, especially in wedding photos. Arm yourself (no pun intended!) with a pair of dumbbells and get those arms in tiptop shape! Most importantly, whether you’re hitting the gym or simply embracing your natural glow, the most important thing is feeling confident and comfortable in your own skin on your wedding day.

Bells of Ireland
WEDDINGDAY’S EXCLUSIVE DETROIT COVER SHOOT
The Vision
Samantha Wiser of Seamless Planning had a vision about embracing simplicity, calm and intentional design. Set against the charming white porch of Zingerman’s Cornman Farms, the aesthetic leaned into fresh, organic elegance with a soft, cool-toned palette of green and white. “I wanted to create a relaxing tone and understated aesthetic, with minimal color and intentional design,” says Samantha. Inspired by the idea of a secluded French countryside wedding—timeless, romantic and effortlessly elegant—Samantha found her muse in a bundle of Bells of Ireland at a local farmers market. Their tall, wispy stems became the centerpiece of the design, adding movement and serenity to the setting. “Bringing this vision to life was not only fulfilling professionally, but also incredibly nourishing for my mental health,” she shares. “It reminded me just how healing creativity can be.”
The Venue
Zingerman’s Cornman Farms served as the perfect backdrop for our organic shoot, blending rustic charm with refined elegance across its 27 rolling acres. “I really wanted to showcase the white farmhouse porch to be the backdrop and really allow the greens and whites to pop,” Samantha shares. This historic 1834 Greek Revival farmhouse, thoughtfully redesigned in 2019, offered a serene and stylish space for the bride to get ready—while the modernized 1837 Red Barn added character and timeless appeal to our shoot. We also love the willow-framed Chef’s Garden which offered a pictureperfect backdrop for Laura Spencer Photography to capture portraits!
The Florals
The florals for our eclectic shoot were inspired by the striking elegance of Bells of Ireland, which served as the floral muse for the entire vision. Samantha raves, “I wanted to highlight green and white blooms that are often underused, and I encouraged Tiffany of Pushin Petals Detroit to fully explore her creativity.” From lush textures to soft tones, every arrangement was a fresh, elevated take on a classic palette. We especially love the unique vases from Gandia’s Catering and the unexpected additions like grapes and artichokes that brought a whimsical, organic touch.

The Stationery
The stationery from Noteworthy by Design was a true reflection of creative freedom and thoughtful design. “When it comes to stationery, I always encourage vendors to lean fully into their creativity,” Samantha explains. With the organic mood board as their guide, Noteworthy by Design embraced the opportunity and delivered beautifully unique pieces that elevated the entire shoot. Some of our favorite details are the double-layered vellum menus and watercolor-lined envelopes!
The Look
The bridal look for our springtime shoot was the perfect blend of romantic elegance and modern sophistication. The dress, provided by The Bridal Studio Corktown, created a dreamy silhouette that felt both classic and fresh. This strapless ballgown featured a timeless sweetheart neckline, echoing the romance of the theme while the cathedral veil brought in the drama. The model’s hair was styled into a soft, effortless updo that captured the relaxed, romantic tone of the day, while her makeup followed a refined soft glam approach. She was both elegant and glowing, her natural beauty enhanced with precision!

The Decor
Both the indoor and outdoor tablescapes were nothing short of extraordinary, thanks to the incredible collaboration between Tiffany of Pushin Petals Detroit and Chantal of Gandia's Catering. “Despite having never worked together before, their synergy was instant—it felt as though they had been collaborating for years,” Samantha shares. “Their vision, passion and artistry brought my mood board to life in the most beautiful way. I truly couldn't have done this without them.” While Gandia's Catering is best known for their culinary expertise, Samantha knew from the start she wanted Chantal’s eye for detail to help shape the design. Her creative flourishes—like adding pearls to artichokes—brought unexpected elegance to each tablescape. For the indoor reception, Samantha chose a caterpillarshaped layout to create intimacy among guests, while the outdoor sweetheart table was designed as a statement moment with the couple's chairs placed at the end to spotlight the lush florals and stunning décor.
