Nationwide
The Midwest expands from the Great Lakes to across the Mississippi River. So many bridal boutiques and salons expand across that large chunk of land. All of them are bursting with professionals ready to help brides feel as beautiful as possible on their special day. But you don't always need an in-person salon to find what you're looking for. Some designer's websites are great tools for finding exactly what you want and where you can buy it. We've added one of our favorite salons outside of our tri-state area and two wonderful designers that will truly help you get that perfect dress to round out our list!

2021 STYLE SHOOT EVENT
Falling in Love Our Autumn Grand Rapids Photographer Collaborative Style Shoot Event
42
WEDDINGDAY
HETLER PHOTOGRAPHY
Our Grand Rapids WeddingDay Photographer Collaborative Style Shoot Event offered a chance for Midwest photographers to gain style shoot experience and grow their connections with other experts in the wedding industry. Working with lead photographer, Kellie Hetler, and Greenville, Michigan venue, Frugthaven Farm, this team was truly top-notch! With tips and tricks from industry experts, a question and answer session with the WeddingDay team and follow-up publication on our platforms, there is so much to gain from these fun events. Take a look at the results from this dreamy day, and read on to see how you can get involved in our next collaborative style shoot!
The Vision
A colorful fall was the theme of this Grand Rapids style shoot. Our planner, Brittany Chesney of 1945 Event Co., staged two weddings to show that small and intimate weddings can be just as stunning as large ones with extravagant décor! “The natural fall elegance wedding was literally a dream come true,” Brittany gushes. “And using colorful fruits and veggies, a mix of metallics and rich florals, the jewel tone harvest theme was brought to life.”

The Decor '

WEDDINGDAY
Both shoots were fall themed, but they each had their own color palette. The jewel-toned wedding was full of rich gemstone colors like purple and red with touches of yellows. On the other hand, the natural fall wedding was filled with warm fall colors like yellow, orange and brown. “Copper and Lace's items fit right in with the vision for this shoot,” Brittany says. The team also tried to utilize pumpkins, fall florals and wood accents with glassware and candles to bring in the elegant side of the shoot. Special Occasions' chairs and linens tied everything together in this stunning shoot, while the stationery and signage by Pretty Petal Papers accented each theme perfectly!
The Venue Frugthaven Farm was the perfect locale for this shoot due to its multiple spaces all in one venue. “We showed how the venue can showcase two completely different size and style weddings in various locations on the farm,” Brittany explains. The spaces showcased were perfect for the themes selected. The jewel-toned shoot takes place in an open air tent with the sprawling field as a backdrop, which makes the celebration seem endless. Our team utilized the venue's smaller barn for the natural fall look, making the setup cozy and intimate!
WEDDINGDAY 45
The Looks Our brides look absolutely gorgeous in both of their America’s Bride gowns! We love how both dresses not only tie to the themes of the shoot but also to each other. The floral lace detailing on the gowns exude elegance and blend with the floral décor in the shoot. The tuxedo from SuitShop is classic with a modern twist. Beauty by Ashleigh, Brittany Andring and Glammed by Samm styled our brides' hair and makeup in laid-back, but elegant styles, perfect for this autumn setting!

WEDDINGDAY 47
The Florals Alex Nazar Floral curated the most stunning floral designs for our shoot! From the deeply colored flowers in the jewel-toned theme to the autumn flowers in the natural fall theme, the floral pieces are an integral part of this shoot. Each table, arch and bouquet is overflowing with flowers that bring each look together!
The Cake & Desserts Two cakes from Sugar and Spice Bakeshop LLC were used to blend with the two visions Brittany had. The blue-frosted confection goes perfectly with the jewel-toned shoot. From the richly colored flowers at the top to the metallic section keeping the two tiers apart, this cake is pure elegance. The fall cake is a stunning burnt orange frosting that exposes its chocolate cake. And we are living for the flowers scattered around the cake! Each wedding also has various pastries that fit the theme and accompany the cakes beautifully.

inspired your business? What WD: What keeps you motivated? as long as I can remember, I KH: "For would be at family events or small
trips to restaurants, and my Grandma would pull out a camera to save memories. When I graduated high school, I received a book full of the photos she saved over the years. Now that she’s gone, all I have left are the memories I have of her through pictures she gave me, and I cherish each and every one of them. The photos she took remind me that what I’m doing as a photographer matters to someone, and if not, the photos I take will someday."
WD: Tell us about your experience and skills. funny thing is, I did not do KH: "The any formal training on how to be a
photographer. I spent years of trial and error with my camera, lighting, location and so on, and also learning a lot from others. It wasn’t until the last couple years when I stumbled across nationallyknown photographers who provide online courses that I discovered my creative outlet for photography is more about me and what I see than what things are supposed to look like from someone else’s perspective or opinion. I’ve learned the technical side of things through YouTube and online courses, and still value anything that helps me learn something new."
WD:
As a business owner, what do you wish to accomplish with your customers? What can a couple look forward to when booking you? "My main goal is to make sure my couples truly have a wonderful wedding experience. I want them to walk away from their wedding thinking that it’s truly the best day ever and not just all about pictures. The best way for me to make this happen is to properly prepare my clients with information on what to expect and to communicate a lot prior to their wedding. This is one reason why I really value an engagement session—engagement sessions not only provide beautiful photos but help clients and me get to know one another. In engagement sessions, clients can get a feel for how I work so when I show up on their wedding day they have a friend and not just a photographer. Additionally, what we learn from each other at an engagement session will save so much time on a wedding day."

WD: KH:
Give us an overview of your services. What makes your business unique? "From the outside my services might seem like any other photographer’s services. However, I like to meet with my couples either by phone, in person or video chat to make sure we are the perfect fit. I like to get to know them, hear their relationship story and become friends. I like to check in with them during the wedding planning process to see how they
are doing with the stress and give advice, tips or suggestions. After the wedding, I want to continue celebrating with them when they have kids, get a new pet or start a new job." us about your favorite part of WD: Tell your job. What keeps it fun for you? favorite part of my job is meeting KH: "My new faces. There are always guests
I become quick friends with at a wedding, and I get to hear about them, their life and how they know the couple. These could be friends from college, a family member, or even co-workers. I love hearing all about their point of view of the relationship. I also love to laugh and create art, so finding opportunities for candid moments that are fun, funny or even sad are so fulfilling."
WD: KH:
What do you love about the industry you work in? "I love the community that is created. These days photography is a very popular industry and there are so many of us just wanting to talk about it, share it and learn from one another. I have made some really great friends through my profession and I don’t think our paths would have crossed otherwise."
MY MAIN GOAL IS
TO MAKE SURE MY COUPLES TRULY
HAVE A WONDERFUL
WEDDING EXPERIENCE. I WANT THEM TO
WALK AWAY FROM THEIR WEDDING THINKING THAT IT ’S TRULY THE
BEST DAY EVER AND NOT JUST ALL
ABOUT PICTURES. the most common question WD: What’s you get from couples? What’s your answer to it? most popular question I KH: "The get is 'How long have you been a photographer?' This is such a hard question
for me, and I think a lot of it is because I felt like such a “fauxtographer” for so long. I purchased my first DSLR (a digital camera where you can change the lenses) when my son was born in 2008. I took photos of family and friends for fun and then realized I could get paid for it. It wasn’t until 2012 when I officially registered my business that I really considered myself a photographer. I spent years doing this business on the side while working full time. I captured a lot of families, but I photographed my first wedding solo in 2013 and absolutely loved it. I decided to take the leap in 2020 and go full-time, upgraded my equipment, and I’m absolutely loving every minute of it." are the best tips you have for WD: What helping couples prepare for their big
day? Any other words of wisdom to share? "My biggest piece of advice I give couples is to enjoy being together during the engagement and to try not to spend so much time focusing on the wedding. Once you begin wedding planning, it can be allconsuming. Remember that weddings are about being together, so focus on each other more than the event"
KH:
a moment to brag about WD: Take something you’re proud of! so proud of the fact that I get to KH: "I’m be a part of people’s lives and make
their moments into memories. When I went into this business I didn’t want to do it just for the money (yeah. a girl’s gotta eat!), but I wanted to be fulfilled in some way. By creating lasting relationships I feel that I’m doing much more than taking pictures." do you calm the nerves of WD: How anxious clients? What do you do to
make them feel comfortable? "I’m a full believer that anxiety can be caused a lot by not knowing what will happen next. I love to communicate expectations of the day and ways we can work around problems if they arise. This could mean finding alternate photo spots if it’s raining or putting your uncle so-and-so on the opposite side of family formals to keep the tension from building up. If the timeline is getting smaller and smaller, I can work creatively to make things happen in a tight schedule while still keeping the atmosphere light."
KH:
are your future goals for your WD: What business? How do you see it growing in the future? I love working with all sorts KH: "While of clients, creatively one of my top goals is to serve primarily wedding clients and high school seniors. I see my business growing in a direction where more and more clients become not only aware of what I can offer them as a photographer but of the lasting connections that can be made when they choose my services."

PLANNING TOOL
THE EASIEST GUIDE TO changing your last name
AFTER THE WEDDING
Y
our newlywed bliss can quickly come to an end when it comes time to endure the dreaded task of changing your last name. The legal process can often take the romance out of taking your significant other’s last name. If you get yourself organized with the proper documents, the process can be less strenuous, allowing you to continue to revel in your newlywed happiness.
1. GET THE ORIGINAL
3. APPLY FOR A NEW LICENSE
5. UPDATE YOUR BANK
Getting a new license from the local Bureau of Motor Vehicles office requires a few documents, namely your old license, the original marriage license and your new Social Security card. Remember to change your address if you have moved after the wedding.
The easiest way to do this is to visit your local branch in person. Take your new license, your marriage license and your new Social Security card, and ask for your name to be changed on your account. Request new checks, debit cards and credit cards with your new name.
2. REQUEST A NEW SOCIAL
4. CHANGE YOUR LAST NAME
6. UPDATE YOUR LAST NAME
If you visit the Social Security Administration’s website, you can find an application for a change of name here. This is a free service. Print the application, fill it out, and include any required documents. You can either take your application to a nearby Social Security office or mail it in. You should receive your new card with your new last name in approximately 10 days.
When your new Social Security card comes in the mail, meet with your HR manager at work to switch your name over. This includes payroll, 401k, your insurance benefits, stocks etc.
MARRIAGE LICENSE FROM THE CLERK’S OFFICE The original license should come from the clerk’s office where your license was filed. One should automatically be sent to you a couple weeks after the wedding. The original document should have a raised seal and your new last name. Also, it’s a good idea to request copies.

THE VISION Samantha Ham of Simply Unforgettable Occasions wanted to incorporate recent trends when she set out to design our Southwest Michigan cover shoot. “I started researching popular trends for the upcoming fall/winter season, and I ran across the dark and moody trend. I decided to put a romantic spin on it,” Samantha explains. We think she beautifully balances the moodiness while keeping the style romantic, and we have Scott Tibbles Photography to thank for the gorgeous photos from this shoot!
SCOTT TIBBLES PHOTOGRAPHY
THE VENUE After doing some research, Samantha thought the western side of Southwest Michigan was utilized more with weddings and style shoots. Wanting to shift the focus closer to central Michigan, Samantha and her team selected Blue Heron Barn in Kalamazoo. “We were looking for a venue that would work well with a dark moody palette and that had a more industrial feel without being overly rustic like some of the other barns we looked at,” Samantha admits.
WEDDINGDAY 81
SCOTT TIBBLES PHOTOGRAPHY
THE DÉCOR “As I was researching the dark and moody trend, I saw a lot of different color combos that we could have used as our palette, but I really liked the idea of using black alongside darker red colors,” Samantha gushes. “We also incorporated a shade of blush and touches of gold to really give it some depth and texture.” Much of the décor was provided by Delicate Dishes. We are in love with the vintage touches including the candelabra and the antique gold mirrors! 82
WEDDINGDAY
THE FLORALS Despite being amidst a flower shortage, Truer Design was able to create some truly dreamy floral designs! Samantha says, “I wanted the florals to communicate excess and luxury, so I chose blooms with high petal counts, statement shapes and plenty of variety.” The combination between dark and light flowers is stunning!

THE LOOK “When designing the shoot, we knew that we wanted to go with a dress that was not stereotypical,” Samantha raves. “We started looking at dresses that had black in them as well as blush dresses.” The bride tried on four dresses during her session at Annie Lane Bridal. The team decided this unique and shimmering gown with black accents was a perfect fit. Christina Wright and her team at BÜK Weddings styled our bride with moody and show-stopping hair and makeup!
