river dechanneling and re-naturalization of the riverbank
Rapidly built over a fluvial network, São Paulo floods several days a year, exposing vulnerable areas to unsanitary and dangerous conditions. Municipal efforts of flood mitigation focused on damming meandering waterways have failed. A moratorium on these hydro-engineering flood solutions is set to initiate the reconciliation between rivers and residents. With a legal status and ownership of
public land, the river is granted the right to flood—without displacing the residents living on its banks. The project envisions a reconciled future between humans and water by de-chanelling the riverbed and re-naturalizing the margins, creating - thus - a flood resilient city.

Downtown Sao Paulo is a region that is avoided as a place of residence for many Paulistanos. This happens for reasons such as the lack of affordability in these areas, the extreme poverty manifested by the unhoused population, and the underutilization of land by many parking lots, reflecting the city’s car-centric dynamic. Three projects are proposed to alleviate the symptoms of degradation.
First, a multi-programmatic building provides cultural and sports programs, and a social assistance unit creates shelter for vulnerable families living on the street. Second, a public square in residual land and an underground gallery make a more pedestrian-friendly route. Finally, social housing provides residence opportunities for lowincome families.

This project is in the intersection between architecture and literature. Three tales from Clarice Lispector became a conceptual framework to inspire three houses. Clarice’s focus on family relationships and daily conflicts is beyond mundane. Characters’ introspection is an entry point to elaborate on how architecture can facilitate social interactions. If Clarice is the core,
Bachelard is the process, through the use of nature as methaphor. Shell, egg, and nest become sources for spatial investigation. These concepts allowed exploring multiple combinations of spaces under the same program, highlighting architecture’s potential as a reconciliation mechanism to unite is set apart by chance.

This architectural studio occurred during the exchange period at the School of Architecture of the University of Porto. This studio required the comprehension of technical detailing, in addition to ludic procedures of creation. The project’s central theme was multi-family housing, considering the terrain’s local demands and its surroundings.
This project encompasses the lessons learned in the Portuguese academic ambiance, focusing mainly on preserving the domestic environment and controlling the public and private space’s nuances. The public zone should have its permeability managed, ensuring its inhabitants’ comfort while not denying the city.

urban design
Although suburbs are often seen as a homogeneous single-family residential typology, we have characterized different identities in Westwood that exist in isolation. The project tries to understand the different identities present in the suburbs, in a way to reconcile them and create a set of strategies applicable in different suburban contexts.
As we considered site interventions, we located ways to stitch the developments together while maximizing the preservation of the natural environmental fabric. We create a pattern of existing buildings, streets, and landscape which set up the framework for our interventions.

This exercise rethinks existing edge conditions to propose healthier interactions between water and population. The project extends the current urban axes to create an armature for new developments that will generate value for the neighborhood in the short term and proposes public programs to activate the waterfront while protecting housing against the threat
of sea level rise in the long term. Strategies aim at transitioning scales, finding opportunities to provide new housing, and creating a resilient waterfront accessible to the public. New ways to interact with the water envision the reclamation of land previously taken solely for industrial production and implementing communal programs accessible to all.

Cities are complex sociopolitical, economic, and cultural organizations perceived and used differently based on social class, gender, and race. This thesis acknowledges many voices were omitted in the urbanization of São Paulo, affecting the right to the city and safe access to basic services.
Women – who are more than half of the population - are
still underrepresented in decision-making positions and processes. This study examines the mechanism and consequences of gender-based inequality, the neglect of social infrastructure, and the rising violence resulting in fear as the city’s modus operandi.
