Born in a dense and efficiency-oriented urban context, I have been seeking means to realize a naturehuman equilibrium in the tangible space. The core idea, Biophilia, binds the concepts of Environmental Symbiosis

and

together,

and

was

implemented in Yu Guang Island in Tainan City, Taiwan. Besides doing urban design that based on the local coastal natural resources, a business model was planned to generate a self-sustained ecosystem, a circulative economy, and a communicative society. In addition, the

initial development combines environmental recycling, information, education, collective work, accommodation, etc. to function as a starting point of the experience on the island.

Overall, the island continues the tourism flow from the nearby An Ping Historical District, and is transformed into an exhibition space where the environmental symbiosis is demonstrated in live. The three existing function areas represent the environmental symbiosis that was realized in the past, could be realized in the present, and can be realized in the future.

Development phase I: Visitor centre (2.5 ha)

Located in the intersection of the main roads, the visitor centre functions as the starting point of the island experience. By introducing multifunctional spaces that fit the need of various groups of visitors and activities that link to the local context, the visitor centre promotes social interaction between locals and outsiders, as well as economic value that supports the local business and the maintenance of ecosystem.

It has a population of almost 4 million people and the largest port in Europe, to top international companies and to renowned

The traditional centre of Regla was settled in 19th century with the deep influence of African culture. Since then the municipality has gradually developed as an industrial and residential-based area.

However due to the shift of the port, the heavy industries that used to be the economic pole of the area is also shifting away, leaving a large amount of brownfield on the edge of waterfront. Therefore the

spatial condition needs to be reorganized in advanced to tackle with the possible issue in the future. In the proposal, the original hard edge was soften through as series of revitalization programs, bringing new ecology and activities to the space.

In the regional scale, Regla maintains its original village atmosphere through the soft green buffer zone, which in the local scale is permeable, open to public, and contribute to the restoration of natural environment.

04 Municipality of Oderzo River Lia River Monticano

The municipality of Oderzo has an ancient history dating back to ancient Rome. However due to industrialization, the city itself and the surrounding territory are losing its traces left throughout history and gradually being developed towards mechanization. The project aimed to reveal the abundant cultural and natural value in the territory by reintroducing identical and functional elements into space, promoting

a slow and rather utopian living style, in a garden of time and space.

It was initiated by reading the landscape in Oderzo as a palimpsest.

The plot size around river Monticano has been generally increased by merging adjcent plots during these 2 decades, especially in the east.

Most of the plots are dedicated to the grape cultivation, and therefore leads to a mono-functional landscape.

By promoting smaller plot and introducing hedges as the first step, the land could already gain back its multifunctionality and amenity.

Scenario: What if the current trend of growing grape continues, and all the plots become vineyard and wine factories?

A through-scale and through-topic reading was done for the territory of Oderzo. The landscape is described as a container of natural and cultural elements that interact among themselves through time, creating both harmony and conflict in the space. As a result, these elements were considered as the key to rearrange the spatial structure and funciton of the territory.

Photography in this project played an important role to document the important elements in the territory. By pairing different photos, the reading of the space changes accordingly, giving new insights, impression and inspiration for the design.

Flevopolders

The process of land reclamation and water drainage in the polders of IJsselmeer delta area have resulted in a vulnerable habitat in which natural dynamic is hardly able to perform and to develop on its own, which makes the land itself hard to adapt to environmental changes without the aid of hard technologies. Built on this setting, the territory of Flevopolders has been embroiled into dealing with the necessity for new urbanization on a spatially limited and environmentally degraded

Time x Human-nature relationship

The project aims to explore the possible spatial transformation and design principles for introducing a landscape infrastructure that could facilitate the establishment of a new relationship between human and nature. The notion of landscape infrastructure and its application transform the original landscapes in Flevopolders into an interwoven landscape that contains diverse and flexible interconnected spaces. It becomes the new framework that guides the future development of the territory, and reveals the optimal characteristics of a delta area.

Habitat Embroidery represents an operation that interweaves natural and human habitats in a sophisticated way, which takes into account the resources, the function and the connection in space through-scale.

These embroidered habitats could perform as a landscape infrastructure system that enhances ecological and social value.

As a conclusion, a proper ground preparation determines the future land use and spatial quality by default.

With instruments that help develop landscape infrastructure in a territory, a harmonious nature-human relationship could be established.

Regarding the implementation in reality, the development ecology should be considered as prioirty due to its time span to grow and the amenity it could bring for further cultural context.

Besides, the responsibility lies on not only government authorities but also individuals and civil society. Only a collaborative approach could lead to the optimal result.
