Welcome Hi Sisters It’s that exciting time of year, spring and daylight saving, it’s goodbye winter and hello longer evenings and warmer times.

Spring is one of my favourite time of year, I feel happier and enjoy the extra hours of daylight to do things with friends and family.

We have just finished our ministering interviews and we had a wonderful discussion about ministering in our sunday meeting. It was good to get how everyone is feeling about ministering, some of the changes, how we introduce ourselves, going outside of our comfort zones have all been a challenge.

Sisters we encourage you to seek Heavenly Fathers guidance with your ministering, pray and ask him for his help and what he wants you to do .

one of my favourite seminary scriptures is Corinthians 10: 13. we are able to bear - says God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able. This scripture helps me daily and reminds me that Heavenly Father is always there for me and it gives me the strength to go on and do the things I need to do.

Thank you sisters for everything you do, Heavenly Father only asks what we can do, he knows us well. If you need any help with your ministering or anything please do not hesitate to ask us for help.

Listening Listening, guided by love, is one of the greatest gifts we can offer to others as we minister to them.

Sincere listening is a simple act of service that helps others feel valued and appreciated, and it helps the listener understand their needs. The quality of attention we offer others can determine the quality of our relationships with them. Our undivided attention is one of the greatest compliments we can offer.

Sister Jean B. Bingham, Relief Society General President, has said: “Sometimes we think we have to do something grand and heroic to ‘count’ as serving our neighbors. Yet simple acts of service can have profound effects on others—as well as on ourselves. What did the Savior do? … He … smiled at, talked with, walked with, listened to, made time for, encouraged, taught, fed, and forgave. He served family and friends, neighbors and strangers alike, and He invited acquaintances and loved ones to enjoy the rich blessings of His gospel.”

The Savior not only taught; He thoughtfully listened, which enabled Him to answer questions and attend to the needs of others. The stories of the woman at the well (see John 4:5–30), the woman taken in adultery (see John 8:2–11), and the disciples on the road to Emmaus (see Luke 24:13–35) all show Jesus’s skill as a listener. Listening, guided by love, is one of the greatest gifts we can offer to others as we minister like the Savior.

5 Things Good Listeners Do Truly listening will help you know how to help meet the spiritual and temporal needs of others as the Savior would.

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said: “Perhaps even more important than speaking is listening. … If we listen with love, we won’t need to wonder what to say. It will be given to us—by the Spirit.”

Listening is a skill we can learn. Listening shows our love for others, helps build strong relationships, and invites the Spirit to bless us with the gift of discernment to help us understand others’ needs. Here are five ways we can improve how we listen.

President Russell M. Nelson taught that we should “learn to listen, and listen to learn from one another.”3 As you listen with the intent of learning about others, you will be in a better position to understand their needs and hear promptings about how you can care for those around you as the Savior would.

Give Them Time

Many people need time to gather their thoughts before speaking. Give them time to think both before and after they say something (see James 1:19). Just because they are finished speaking doesn’t mean they have said everything they need to. Don’t be afraid of silence (see Job 2:11–3:1 and Alma 18:14–16).

Pay Attention

We think faster than others speak. Resist the temptation to jump to conclusions or to think ahead to what you’ll say when they’re through (see Proverbs 18:13). Instead, listen with the intent to understand. Your response will be better because it will be informed by greater understanding.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions that clarify something you didn’t understand (see Mark 9:32).

Clarifying reduces misunderstanding and shows your interest in what is being said.

Paraphrase what you heard and how you understand the other to feel. This helps them know if they have been understood and gives them an opportunity to clarify.

You might not agree with everything said, but agree with what you can without misrepresenting your own feelings. Being agreeable can help defuse anxiety and defensiveness (see Matthew 5:25).

Our bodies were created in the image of God. They are a gift from Heavenly Father to allow us to experience mortality and continue to become more like Him. This knowledge influences the way we treat our bodies and how we feel about Heavenly Father and ourselves. When we treat our bodies as temples of God, we obtain physical, emotional, and spiritual blessings.

Getting to know

Genevere Pearl I was born into the church but found that I truly found my testimony during that year away. When I was on my own and away from my family, I had to decide if I was going to church because it was just “what we did”, or if it was because it was something that I wanted in my life. I am very grateful for the amazing experiences I had there that set the foundation of my testimony and my adult spiritual life.

For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Genevere Pearl. I am the second oldest of 4 children. I have an older brother (who lives in Howick) and 2 younger sisters (one living in Germany, and the other in South Africa).

I was born in Johannesburg, South Africa.

When I was about 10, my family moved to a smaller town about an hour out of Johannesburg. Living there gave me a very happy childhood with a lot of freedoms and experiences I probably would have missed out on being in a bigger city. I really enjoyed school and my favourite subjects were Maths, Science, and Art. After I finished high school I took a year off to go and Au Pair in Connecticut in the USA. Page 10

I started my education after receiving a scholarship to study Engineering at University, but after completing nearly 2 years of the degree, I realised that engineering would not afford me the opportunity to work part time or from home. In order to prioritise my desire to be a stay at home mom one day, I decided to switch my degree to something that would allow me to be able to do this. I switched to a correspondence business degree. It was a long road, but a number of years and 2 kids later, I accomplished my goal and graduated.

I met my husband Mark just over 10 years ago at a Multistake YSA convention (yes they do work). Having recently returned from his mission, he was no wanting to get into a serious relationship, but was wanting to date as many people as possible. I guess that didn’t work out too well for him as we started dating shortly thereafter and were married less than a year later. We now have 3 wonderful children. Daniel (age 7), Juliet (age 3 – going on 10) and Jamie (10 months). They provide

us with our greatest challenges, growing opportunities and our greatest joys.

Mark and I have been very blessed to have our own business. I took over the running of the business shortly after Daniel was born.

This afforded me the opportunity to be able to work from home and be a stay at home mom, which I absolutely love. Although it has its own challenges, it is so rewarding and I wouldn’t change for the world.

I am very crafty and love creating things.

Although I haven’t had the chance to draw or paint in many years, I manage to keep my creative side alive by making decorative things for our home and doing design work for our company. I also do some ad hoc newborn baby photography, and more recently some upcycling of furniture.

In 2016, we made the decision to leave South Africa and move to New Zealand. It was a very difficult decision as it was very hard to leave family, and everything we knew, to come to a country we hardly knew anything about. We prayed hard about it and felt that this would provide the best future, securities and opportunities for our family, and so took a huge leap of faith, and here we are. I feel that Heavenly Father has really strengthened me throughout this process and helped make the transition so much easier than I thought it would be. We love living in New Zealand and appreciate the beauty that is all around us. We have had many wonderful family experiences and these have brought us closer together as a family. We love exploring New Zealand and some of our favourite things to do are going on weekly family walks, flying kites, bike riding, and exploring the many different parks and playgrounds with our kids.

I am so grateful to my Heavenly Father for having a plan for my life, and the different and sometimes unexpected ways in which he helps me to find it and follow it.

For Mutual Thursday 13th September we invited a panel of three returned missionaries - Sister Diane Green, Sister Marieke Murphy and Sister Lina Shin and two pre-mission sisters - Jordan and Tuavae. The Young Women were able to ask any questions at all of our excellent panel. “what did you love about your mission?” was one question that was unanimously answered with “the people”. Lovely night followed by great Samoan food as a preparation for Jordyn Port heading to the Samoan mission in December.

Cooking - Jasmine Perretts fav recipes

Lime & Coriander fish with noodles Asian style 2 min noodles 2tsp green curry paste 2 fish terakihi fillets 1tbsp oil 2 cups fresh or frozen stir fry veges 2 cus cooked noodles 2tbsp sweet chilli sauce juice of 1 lime handful of coriander leaves

Method Spread curry paste over fish fillets and place in the fridge to marinate for a few minutes, Heat oil in pan and stir fry the veges until cooked and lightly brown. remove and cover.

Fish Cakes 210g can pink salmon, flaked 500g potatoe peeled cooked and grated 2 spring onions chopped 1/2 cup coriander chopped plus 1/4 cup extra zest and juice of 1/2 lemon 1 tsp grated ginger 1 egg mixed with 1 tbsp water 1 cup dried breadcrumbs 2 tsp seasame seeds 1/2 cup natural yoghurt Seasonal salad to serve

Method

Add a little more oil to hot pan, cut fish into bite size chunks and fry until golden brown.

Combine Salmon, potato, spring onions 1/2 cup coriander, lemon zest, ginger, salt and pepper in a bowl, form mixture into 8 balls ,flatten slightly with palm of hand

Remove fish and add to veges.

Whisk egg with water in a bowl

Place noodles, lime juice, chilli sauce in pan, quickly toss veges and fish in and heat thru, serve immediately, sprinkle with fresh coriander.

combine breadcrumbs and sesame seeds in a separate dish Roll fish cakes into flour, then dip in egg mixture then finally into the breadcrumbs and sesame seed mixture, cover and place in fridge until ready to cook.

Heat oil in pan, cook in batches for 3-4 minutes on each side.

Dipping sauce - combine yoghurt, lemon juice, 1/4 coriander, salt and pepper to taste.

Week day activity - Cooking with Tem

Cooking with Tem Tem and Tauave shared stories from their homeland of Kiribati and showed us two versions of making raw fish.

Raw FishGreen Pepper, Yellow Pepper, Red Pepper, onion, cucumber, Salmon. Lime (Lemon), salt, coconut cream, sushi vinegar, soya sauce Method Cut everything up into small cubes including fish.

Option 1 Marinate the fish in the lime juice, add vegetables then add coconut cream, serve Option 2 Marinate fish in sushi vinegar, add lime juice, soya sauce, add vegetables.Serve

Kiribas is in the central Pacific Ocean, It was named the Gilbert Islands after the British explorer Thomas Gilbert. It consists of 32 Atolls and one solitary island (Banaba).

Kiribas islands are sinking, in 1999 2 uninhabited islands disappeared underwater.

Potluck Dinner!!!

Massive thanks to Charlene for organising a fantastic Potluck dinner for our Orphan X book club this month.

Naomi completed the book and gave us a breakdown on Orphan X the assasin and his dealings with Orphan O. This book was similar to the Bourne Idenity series so if you are into that you will love this book. We then enjoyed Yummy desserts provided by Charlene who really went the extra mile with her desserts. THANK YOU xox

New Book Oct/Nov Small Great Things SMALL GREAT THINGS is the most important novel Jodi Picoult has ever written. Frank, uncomfortably introspective and right on the day’s headlines, it will challenge her readers...

The difficult self awareness is what sustains this book...forcing engaged readers to meditate on their own beliefs and actions along with these characters....

It's also exciting to have a high-profile writer like Picoult take an earnest risk to expand our cultural conversation about race and prejudice.

Familiy History time so they can think about their answers and bring along any memorabilia they want to share. Our children love hearing their grandparents talk about their courtship, their favorite pets, their first jobs, and the houses they’ve lived in.

Capture the video. It is wonderful to watch our loved ones’ expressions and gestures as they share their life stories, perhaps shedding tears or breaking into joyful smiles. Capturing these moments on video allows us to enjoy them now and after they pass on.

Upload and share. Many family history and social media websites allow you to upload these precious audio and video files and attach them to your ancestors’ profiles. They add a wonderful dimension that goes beyond documents and written stories, and they inspire greater love for your relative. Young people are more likely to find and share these stories if they can access them through the internet.

We just never know how much longer our relatives will be able to share precious memories of their past and their ancestors.

It is so important to take advantage of every opportunity to listen to and record our loved ones so their posterity can remember them.

Here are nine tips to make recording interviews an enjoyable activity for you and your family:

Let them do the talking. The skillful family history interviewer will say as little as possible and allow their relative to take center stage.

Don’t be afraid to let them pause and think before answering a question. Encourage them with your expressions rather than frequent verbal cues. Allow them to ramble and follow their stream of memories. They may end up sharing things you didn’t think to ask about.

Seize the moment. Most of us have smartphones with voice and video recorders built in. You never know when your relative will start sharing a memory. Be ready to record at any time; if you are, you will capture some precious gems.

Ask open-ended questions. Ask questions that cannot be answered with a “yes” or a “no.” Some examples include: “How did you spend your Saturday afternoons as a child?”

“How did you spend your time before the internet and cell phones were available?”

“What do you remember about your grandparents?”

Plan an evening. My husband and I invite our parents over once a month for an evening of questions and answers about their lives. We have a nice digital voice recorder for these events, and we send the questions ahead of

Interview family members Bring photos and memorabilia. Prepare beforehand by gathering photos and scrapbooks that will trigger memories and fuel the narrative. Keep a pencil handy to label those photos if you haven’t already.

Break it down. These days, we are accustomed to scrolling through social media, flipping through magazines, and channel

surfing. We are more likely to catch a story and re-share it if it is relatively short. Once you have your interview, try to break it down into smaller chunks that can be labeled by topic, such as “First Date” or “Saturday Afternoons.”

Audio and video editing software make this editing process simple. You can also start and stop your audio and video recorder with each question you ask.
