In Jesus, the infinite becomes an infant

God works through his people wherever they are. Here’s how one Christian is joining in God’s redemptive work by giving great haircuts, running a thriving business with a great culture, and coaching others.
Mark Maciver owns a barbershop brand called SliderCuts, and while he’s a barber at heart, he does more than cut hair. He runs a shop with 13 barbers, teaches small businesses about growth, and creates content, including a book called Shaping Up Culture. He won a Black British Business Award in 2018, was nominated for an Evening Standard Business Award in 2019, and counts Stormzy, Lebron James, and Anthony Joshua among his clients.
‘As a kid, my mum and brothers cut my hair because we couldn’t afford barbers. At 12, surrounded by classmates with sharp cuts, I decided to try it myself. My first attempts went badly. I had some terrible cuts, but I kept practicing. Soon I was cutting my cousin’s and brother’s hair, then friends and neighbours. By 18, I had customers and was working in a barbershop while studying. After doing courses in social work and personal training,

I want to represent Jesus faithfully, both in my business and online, and run a company that pleases God.

I realised at 24 that barbering was what I was good at and wanted to do.
‘A typical day is busy. Today, I woke at 2:30am and had my first client at 5:15am. I’ve had back-to-back appointments since then. Later, I’ll be producing content, editing, and spending time with my children while my wife does some freelance work. I’ll take my son to football and aim for bed by 10pm, although I admit I compromise on sleep, which isn’t a good thing!
‘My Christian faith is central to who I am and how I run my business. Biblical principles guide my ethics, decisions, and the projects I accept.

I once turned down a high-profile music video feature because I couldn’t be sure the lyrics wouldn’t conflict with my beliefs. It wasn’t easy, but I want my work to align with my faith.
‘When hiring, I’m clear that I am a Christian and the shop is run on Christian principles – even the music we play reflects that. I want people to choose whether they want to work in that environment. In the barber’s chair, clients often share deeply personal stuff. I pray for wisdom to offer the right words and sometimes share parts of my faith openly, including on social media.
‘The hardest part of running a business is managing people well. But I love watching the business thrive and seeing barbers succeed. It brings me joy to know they can earn more in my shop and that enables them to buy homes or enjoy holidays.
‘My prayer is to be a good leader. The bigger the platform, the greater the responsibility. Above all, I want to represent Jesus faithfully, both in my business and online, and run a company that pleases God.’
Imagine a world where every Christian was equipped to join God’s redemptive work in their day-to-day. Your support helps Christians like Mark live out kingdom values wherever they are, in all of life.
Here are six ways Mark bears Christlike fruit through his work.
Mark seeks to be a good leader, showing godly wisdom, patience, and leadership to his staff.
Mark and his team give world-class haircuts, helping clients look their best and express their personalities.
Mark pays close attention to the person in the chair, offering a listening ear and comforting words when they share personal struggles.
SliderCuts’ motto is ‘shaping up culture, one hairline at a time’ – Mark recognises how a godly business can impact people, a city, and the world.
Mark only takes on work that lines up with his faith, not supporting messages or songs that go against God’s ideal.

Mark speaks openly about his faith to colleagues, clients, and his online following.
We asked Hugo Ramalho, Chief Financial Officer at a major automotive brand, how our Executive Toolbox course shaped his daily discipleship. Here’s what he said...
‘I’ve been a Christian for over 20 years, and I’ve got over 15 years of leadership experience within the finance sector. My career has taken me across multiple countries, and I currently serve as Chief Financial Officer in the UK for the world’s largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles.
‘The Executive Toolbox course really changed my perspective on my work. The Bible has always been my guiding principle for faith and practice, but during the course, it was mindblowing to discover how thoroughly and practically Scripture speaks into leadership and business practices. Hearing leadership experiences and workplace challenges from peers in similar roles added a fresh layer of insight to my own day-to-day work. Their stories helped me view my responsibilities through a broader, more thoughtful lens.
‘I learned a lot that I’ll take with me into my day-to-day work.

One big thing is how to be more practical and intentional about linking my work life – things like leadership, goals, and career – with my spiritual life. I’m keen to bridge the gap between Sunday and the working week, making my faith more vividly present from Monday to Friday.
‘I do see God working through me where I am. Being in a leadership role means you’ve got a certain level of influence and power, doesn’t it? I believe using that with integrity and responsibility can really make a difference. It helps those around me grow and thrive, which in turn boosts the business – and ultimately brings glory to God.
‘I was genuinely chuffed to see how up-to-date the Executive Toolbox Programme is. It’s right in line with what’s taught at top business schools around the world. And the LICC team – well, they set the bar high and absolutely delivered. Massive kudos to them.’
