Xunantunich Maya Temples & Cave Tubing

San Pedro / 3 Hours / Discovery Expeditions Snorkel in the first marine reserve established in Central America – Hol Chan (Mayan for “Little Channel”). Explore the coral reefs while swimming amongst flamboyantly colored tropical fish. Then head to a second snorkel stop, Shark Ray Alley. Friendly reef fish, including snappers and jacks, dart among graceful stingrays and inquisitive brown nurse sharks for an experience not to be missed.

San Pedro / 8 Hours / Discovery Expeditions Travel to ancient Xunantunich via a 19th-century handcranked ferry across the Mopan River. The Xunantunich ruins include 25 temples and palaces including the largest, El Castillo. Next, drive through the rainforest to Caves Branch Outpost, an underground cave system where you’ll float on an inner tube, experiencing underground waterfalls, crystallized ceilings, and exotic cave formations.

Ambergris Caye / 8 Hours / Discovery Expeditions Board a riverboat at Tower Hill and head up the New River, traversing little creeks and encountering hawks, kites, and falcons. At the entrance to the New River Lagoon, the ruins of Lamanai rise into view. While touring the site, huge masks depicting past rulers and gods seem to materialize out of the rainforest amid the chatter of birdlife and the haunting call of howler monkeys.

Cave Tubing / Belize Zipride San Pedro / 7 Hours / Discovery Expeditions Belize Your adventure to Caves Branch Outpost begins with a zip-line across a series of overhead cables criss-crossing the rainforest canopy, with stunning karst limestone cliffs as your backdrop. Hike a jungle trail to the entrance of an underground cave system, where your guide will hand out headlamps for your tube float through the crystallinelined caves. Afterwards, enjoy a buffet lunch.

PANAMA AMAZING NATURE, A COSMOPOLITAN CAPITAL & AN AWESOME MAN-MADE MARVEL

32

PANAMA COSTA RICA

I

N THE ZONE The lure of Panama may begin with its eponymous canal, but it certainly does not end there. You’ll also

find incredibly diverse flora and fauna, a sophisticated capital city, Caribbean and Pacific beaches, mountain ranges and 1,000 tiny islands, historical sites, and living indigenous cultures. Not bad for a tiny country that’s primarily known for connecting the two continents of the Western Hemisphere. Hop on a cruise through one of the modern world’s most spectacular engineering wonders, the Panama Canal. Rise above sea level in the Miraflores Locks, stroll alongside massive ships navigating the Pedro Miguel Locks, and observe the recently completed Canal expansion.

WORLD CAPITAL

APPROXIMATE FLIGHT TIMES New York/Newark 5½ hours Philadelphia 5½hours Boston 6 hours Chicago 6 hours Miami 3 hours Los Angeles 2½ hours (some flights may require connections) ENTRY/DEPARTURE REQUIREMENTS US citizens must have a passport with a remaining validity of three months, plus proof of onward/ return ticket, and sufficient funds (minimum $500.00 USD). No visas are required for tourist visits of up to 180 days. The departure tax ($40.00 USD) at the airport may be included in your ticket. LANGUAGE Spanish is the official language, though English is widely spoken in the tourism industry. CURRENCY US dollar ($); the Panamanian balboa (B/), which is pegged to the US dollar at a 1:1 ratio, also circulates. CLIMATE Tropical wet climate, average annual temperature of 82°F (at Panama City). The warmest month is March (84°F); the coolest is September (81°F). December is the rainiest month, and March the driest.

The modern metropolis of Panama City resembles nothing so much as Miami. A chic center of international commerce, fashion, dining, nightlife, arts, casinos, and shopping, topped by an impressive skyline of shimmering glass and steel towers, it stands guard over one of the world’s most awesome engineering achievements.

PANAMA

Panama City

EXPLORING

SAND & WATER

• A ferry trip along the Panama Canal lets you cruise through the Pedro Miguel Locks and rise above sea level in the Miraflores Locks.

Discover a paradise for beach and water sports enthusiasts.

• Take a guided tour to the peak of Volcan Barú in Chiriqui Province, at 11,400 feet the highest point in the country, where on a clear day you can see both the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea. • Stroll or bike the length of the Amador Causeway, which connects Panama City to the islands of Naos, Culebra, Perico, and Flamenco. There are restaurants, bars, and duty-free shopping along the way. • Immerse in absolute serenity and immaculate beauty amid the 365 Caribbean islands of Guna Yala. You can expect pool-like waters, snow-white sands, gorgeous coral reefs, and sheer perfection.

Bordered by the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea, Panama has dozens of excellent sandy beaches on both sides of the isthmus, as well as a number of islands off both coasts. Bocas del Toro, Taboga, Santa Catalina, and the Azuero Peninsula are just a few of the popular beach town destinations where the waters are clear and the sands are soft.

Panama has gained renown for its top-shelf surf breaks, with point breaks, beach breaks, hollow tubes, and long peelers up and down both coasts. Grab a board and head to Bocas del Toro, Playa Malibu, Playa Teta, Playa Venao, and Isla Grande.

OVER THE COUNTER LIVING HISTORY Casco Viejo, the historic area of Panama City, is full of Spanish Colonial-style government buildings, cathedrals, museums, theaters, and residences, all planted along quaint cobblestone streets. Dating from the 17th century, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The neighborhood still houses the Palacio de las Garzas, residence of the President of Panama.

Look for local Panamanian crafts in the Centro de Artesanias, Galería Arte Indígena, and Mercado de Artesanía de Panamá Viejo. Shop for embroidered blouses, jewelry, hand-woven hats, molas bags, hammocks, maracas, dresses, purses, headbands, masks, embroidered textiles, and other native handicrafts.

ECO-HAVEN Easily accessible from Panama City, the Metropolitan National Park natural reserve offers a close encounter with nature’s best. Hike up to the historic Ancon Hill for panoramic views. And there are three parks on the mountainous Azuero Peninsula that are tailor-made for great hiking: Cerro Hoya National Park, Montuoso Forest Preserve, and La Tronosa Reserve.
