“But if thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought. A bad usage can spread by tradition and imitation even among people who should and do know better.” - George Orwell Politics and the English Language
George Orwell, author and apparent seer, wrote extensively about totalitarian overreach, its means and methods, throughout his lifetime. WRITTEN SEPTEMBER 11, 2021 It’s interesting how words develop definition, almost automatically, as society and culture changes. This happens as a matter of course, over time, all on its own. But that’s not the only way it happens. Sometimes, the media apparatus, the corporate conglomerates that glom onto one another, incorporating and gobbling up ‘News’ brands, they have the power to perpetuate misuse of language by dissemination. In other words, they can say something and millions will hear it, so if they use a word incorrectly, millions will be conditioned to also misuse the word. More insidious that this, academia has, through the development of theory, also used language in new ways. Some of this is an honest attempt to coin a term, creating nomenclature for new ideas by connecting to root meanings of words and their components - prefix, root, and suffix. Still, some of that theory, especially critical theory, has purposefully inverted the meaning of words that often reflect the exact opposite of what is etymologically implied. Detaching these words from their root words, repurposing them, they appropriate the cultural wellspring of language for their own misuse. A prime example of their claiming for their own that which is ours is the redefinition of the word, ‘Racism’. Racism, as the root of the word - race - clearly implies, is an ism about race.
What’s an ism? ism noun \ ˈi-zəm
They’ve force-fed our mouths this new definition of racism, and in doing so, they have embodied the prior definition of racism. Their new definition of racism is itself racist, as the first definition defines racism. Recently we’ve seen other Orwellian examples of language manipulation.
There’s A Way Back - web.archive.org The “Wayback Machine” is a web archive that records screen shots of websites over time. As of January 18, 2021, the word ‘vaccine’ had a very simple and single definition - the same one definition it had always had.
The use of the word, ‘racism’, thereafter came to imply, in the common vernacular, that some people were better, and some worse, by way of their race. So racism, when broken down into root and suffix, is easy to understand. The word naturally developed, and in each subsequent application of the word, we can easily see how. However, that word has recently been forcefully redefined, from a critical theory perspective, to mean the exact opposite. They’ve developed a theory, a distinctive doctrine... and a cause... around race. It’s hard to miss this literal inversion of the meaning of the word, ‘racism’, if you understand how words develop over time.
Liberty, Liberally
There is a trap that is set by the false, left/right paradigm of modern political discourse. If you have a unique thought, it cannot be heard, even when you say it clearly. The majority of people have been trained by the political parties that there are only two points of view, and that we all have to choose between those two. So, when presented with an idea that is outside of that duality, most tend to to categorize it - left, or right. Which way to turn? Regardless of the countless examples of this phenomenon, the real loss for humanity is that every individual is capable of forming their own perspectives, if allowed to do so. Of course, that’s with the assumption that we would overcome our own apathy, and actually care enough to think about things deeply. This leads us to the classic chicken or the egg, which came first, idea:
Screen shot from the web archive, Wayback Machine, showing the Webster’s definition of ‘vaccine’ as of January 18, 2021 By January 26, 2021, Merriam-Webster had updated their definition of vaccine, for the first time in history, to include an experimental shot that previously would not have been referred to by that trusted name.
Definition of ism 1 : a distinctive doctrine, cause, or theory So, the primary meaning of the word “racism” is a distinctive doctrine, cause, or theory about race. As the word has been used, since first being used in the mid 1920’s, it only implies a belief that race plays a role in human ability. This is surely a layman’s application of ‘scientific racism’, as it would affect the social sphere. Treating different races differently, scientific racism suggested that the races evolved separately, and perhaps from entirely different species (see ‘polygenic’). This led to a caste system supporting by science that was, after all, always theoretical. (This was widely accepted science in the decades leading up to Hitler, and it was from this scientific theory that Hitler championed the ideas of racial superiority.)

Is public apathy something that occurs naturally, and the result is the twosided paradigm? Or, is the two-sided paradigm the cause of public apathy? I lean towards the latter. Perhaps if it weren’t for our force-fed fealty to this left or right world, we would be in a position to contemplate our own thoughts and derive our own conclusions. Perhaps without the overarching nonsense that we must accept, that only two perspectives should be debated, we would change the debate itself. Since I’ve been writing and publishing these essays, I’ve had several interactions with people in real life that have caused me to consider and write this current essay. Several people have mentioned these essays to me in passing, and they seem to identify the themes - although not completely - with either their own viewpoint, or that of the perceived opposing viewpoint. Basically, I’ve been called a liberal by self-identifying conservatives, and a conservative by self-identifying liberals.
Screen shot from the web archive, Wayback Machine, showing that Webster’s had, by January 26, 2021, added a secondary definition to ‘vaccine’, for the first time in history. Once again, the internet proves to be fundamentally flawed in it’s historykeeping capacity. The shot might be safe and effective, but it is not a vaccine. This isn’t about the efficacy of the shot, and my traditionally liberal inclination is that everyone ought to be able to choose to do what they want to do... so long as they are fully informed as to what the shot is, and what it isn’t.
It’s odd. I feel like I can’t escape. It’s a feeling of isolation that is rather unpleasant. If you think about it, the one thing that the Republicans and the Democrats always - and I mean ALWAYS - agree on, it’s that no other perspectives
are valid. The left and the right will vehemently defend their duopoly, and acting as one, both sides will shame you for not choosing a side.
It’s a bit of a trap, that we can’t have a conversation outside of the defined narrative. The people who control things do so by having a comfortable adversary. The adversary must be the absolute mirror image of their position. And like a house of mirrors, we find ourselves lost in that illusion.
Someone taught me long ago that you can navigate a house of mirrors adeptly, first try, simply by looking down at the ground, tracing where the floor meetings the mirrors. Well, we just need to look down at the ground, that common ground, to find our way out. The choices put before us, the two choices, lead us to believe that we should choose the one that most resonates with us. But these two choices will always be a pendulum dynamic, causing disorientation. There will never be any real change in our system of self governance, if we don’t decide to step out of the house of mirrors and recognize that it is a mere reflection of the potential of human thought.
People spend decades in that illusion, and they never see progress. They only see their perceived enemy, staring back at them.
There are carnival barkers all over the place, inviting us in to this house of mirrors. And we don’t teach intuition, only intellect in our schools, so that we are not well-versed versions of ourselves. Those who are best suited to this system, then, are those who are most likely to bifurcate their own sense faculties, those who can set aside reason and work within an abstraction of absolutes.
Each one of us is worthy of our own opinions. We shouldn’t be married to any ideology that we can’t honestly say that we understand completely. The idea of hierarchy of thought, that someone knows better than you, and can use your self-determination better than you could, well, that’s ridiculous. That’s why I ridicule that false duality of political parties and the left/right ideologies every chance I get.
The carnival barkers will do whatever it takes to suck you in, but it’s a trap. In the end, you will end up right where you started, only with less money in your pocket.

I’m not writing this to suggest some grand conspiracy with Webster’s dictionary and the Illuminati (TM).
