1936
Employees of the Board of Education (now Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation) and Evansville College (now University of Evansville) establish Evansville Teachers Federal Credit Union. It originally operates from the manager’s classroom at Central High School.
Operations relocate to a closet at Bosse High School in 1954. In 1961, Ted Hitch assumes the role of president. As business increases, the credit union installs its first telephone in 1962.
In 1976, the credit union surpasses $10 million in assets. Two years later, it begins offering certificates.
1990s
Assets reach $100 million in 1990 as Mike Phipps takes the reins as president. ETFCU adds branches in Evansville, Newburgh, and Owensboro to serve its growing membership.
In 1998, the Federal Credit Union Act is amended to allow credit unions to expand their fields of membership
The credit union begins the decade with more than 50,000 members and nearly $800 million in assets. In 2012, the board of directors hires Bill Schirmer as president. Schirmer integrates numerous innovative products and services. The credit union expands its branch footprint to serve members in Evansville and neighboring communities, along with Louisville, Bowling Green, and the Greater Nashville area.
2022
ETFCU changes its name to Liberty Federal Credit Union to be more inclusive to its expanding regional membership. It operates 28 branches in three states, serving more than 250,000 members with $3 billion in assets.
