For the last two years I have been a hospice Medical Social Worker. I had previously done this work in the early 1990’s At that time, of the clients I served, perhaps five percent were classified as having some form of dementia. Before my recent my retirement in 2024, approximately sixty percent of my clients were diagnosed with mild to severe dementia.Why is this so? Why such a dramatic leap in cases? This is what I explore and try to positively address in my latest book, Don’tLose Your Mind: Re-Imagining Age &How to Reclaim the Place of Elder and Sage.I am not a physician and make a disclaimer about this right from the start. I am writing this as an MSW social worker with a B.A. in sociology and educator in the field of Ayurveda. Because of this background, what I observe and what I recommend is unique to an audience - the elderly, the soon-to-be elderly, and the children who tend to or manage them - seeking ways of understanding, working with, rather than succumbing to dementia. The essential message of this book is that with a shift of perspective, being proactive in medical and medicine choices, and lifestyle changes, reclaiming and reestablishing elder-hood as a guiding force for future generations is not only possible. It is sorely needed in a culture dominated by consumerism, desperate immediate gratification, bereft of an appreciation for time and
