Research shows that having a strong social support system, especially close familial relationships, can help promote substance abuse recovery (Masterton, 2022) Offering personal support for substance abuse disorders, as well as encouraging professional treatment when needed, can help your loved ones Understanding the consequences, making important changes for oneself, and supporting those around you can make a drastic impact and help family functioning overall (McCrady, 2021)

Understanding the Factors

Many factors can play a role in substance abuse disorders For instance, research shows that distress within romantic relationships and alcohol abuse are strongly associated (McCrady, 2021) The behaviors of family members also have the potential to influence those around them Setting an example and making changes to one's own drinking habits can help encourage those around you to make changes (McCrady, 2021)

Family therapy sessions are one way that individuals can be involved in the process of recovery for those they care about One study found that integrating family into professional help assisted in long term alcohol use recovery (McCrady, 2021)

If you or someone you know is struggling with substance abuse or mental health, the first step is to find resources that are available for recovery (Daley, 2013) Treatment programs are available for individuals who are struggling Completion of substance abuse treatment programs has proven to be a way for families to become more unified (Olsen, 2015)
