Camera movement

Camera Movement Camera movement is used to alter the relationship between the subject and the camera frame, changing the viewer's perspective. The camera height and angle, the distance to a subject and the composition of a shot may change during camera movement. There are several standard camera movment types used in film and the media, including; tracking, dolly, dolly zoom, follow, pan, pedestal and tilt.

Pan: Horizontal movement of the camera, left or right.

Follow: When the camera physically follows the subject at a more or less constant distance.

Tilt: Vertical movement of the camera angle, i.e. pointing the camera up and down (as opposed to moving the whole camera up and down).

Tracking: where the camera follows a subject across a scene, physically moving the camera moving left or right to keep the subject central in the frame.

Dolly: When the camera is mounted on a cart which travels along tracks for a

very smooth movement. The dolly is also used for special zooms, where the camera moves closer or further from the subject while simultaneously adjusting the zoom angle to keep the subject the same size in the frame.

Pedestal: Moving the camera position vertically with respect to the subject.
