ur View

An Annual Report is all about giving thanks. It’s recognition and gratitude to each and every one of the people and organizations who have supported St. Mary Academy - Bay View this year. As President of this historic institution, it is my honor to say

thank you.

As I ready to depart my position after more than four years at the Academy, I offer a special note of gratitude to you for partnering with me during my tenure. Together we have brought Bay View forward in encouraging and powerful ways. Giving has increased overall and significant advancements have been made with regards to endowed funds. We’ve received two of the largest gifts in the Academy’s history. A strategic plan has been written and adopted with the input of all constituents.

We boast a new mission statement that more accurately reflects the Bay View of this generation.

We were celebrated by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges for our exceptional submission of a five-year interim report. We’ve launched a successful new annual fundraiser via the Parents Guild, the Take Flight Gala, and special events that I hope will continue for decades to come, such as Homecoming and the Major Donor Reception.

I am extremely grateful for your support, of me and of the school, and I look forward to seeing you at events on campus this year and in the future. Bay View Academy will always be in my heart and thus, I am proud to say, “I am Bay View.”

From Bay View’s Director of Philanthropy and Alumnae Relations, Kim Norton-O’Brien I have the privilege of talking and working with alumnae and donors every day. And when I say it’s a privilege, it truly is. St. Mary Academy - Bay View alumnae are passionate about their alma mater and their passion is contagious. One afternoon, I was chatting with an alumna donor about why she gives to Bay View. What she said was something I wrote down because it resonated with me so much. This alumna, who is a leader in her field, said, “My years at Bay View gave me the foundation for everything that has come later in my life. Bay View taught me how to be a leader, how to be a critical thinker, how to focus on what is important and maybe most importantly, that I can make a difference in whatever I do. Even outside of work in my personal life as a wife and mom, I feel it. I truly believe it made me the person I am and that my success today is in large part because of Bay View.”

I thank each and every donor for their passion and support of Bay View’s mission. With your continued support, we will help girls and young women become the very best versions of themselves just as we have since 1874. It’s my pleasure to hear your stories and share your passion for Bay View.

T ake Flight Gala 2015 Grosses The Bay View Academy Parents Guild launched a new event in 2015 with the Take Flight Gala, a fundraising initiative to benefit the girls and young women of the Academy. The Gala took place on October 17th at the Crowne Plaza in Warwick, under the direction of Bay View parents Mike and Kathy Lee, who spearheaded the fundraising effort as Chairs. Corporate sponsors, alumnae, parents and friends enjoyed dinner, dancing, and both live and silent auctions.

The first Take Flight Gala grossed $122,400 in ticket sales, sponsorships and auctions. The net $96,500 in proceeds from the Gala has been put to current needs of the Academy.

Save the Date for the 2016 Take Flight Gala on October 22nd at the Crowne Plaza. Bay View parents Bob and Kathy Rubino will chair the 2016 event.

Meet Dr. Sneha Jacob, Class of 1996. Dr. Jacob is longtime St. Mary Academy - Bay View donor whose passion for assisting underserved populations was sparked while she was a Bay View student. We thank Dr. Jacob for her ongoing support of Bay View and invite you to learn more about this exceptional alumna.

Educational Background I received my B.A. in Psychology from Yale University, my M.D. from New York Medical College, and my M.S. in Epidemiology from the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. I completed my Internal Medicine residency training at Johns Hopkins Bay View Medical Center and my HIV subspecialty fellowship at Columbia University Medical Center.

Professional Background I began my career as an HIV specialist in Manhattan, caring for patients and teaching HIV medicine to housestaff at Columbia University academic centers in Washington Heights, Harlem, midtown Manhattan, and Chelsea. While living in Manhattan I also served as the Assistant Medical Director of a managed Medicaid insurance program for people living with HIV. Four years ago I moved to New Brunswick, New Jersey, where I became Director of HIV Clinical Services at the Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Eric B. Chandler Community Health Center. I currently direct an HIV program in which I provide medical care to more than 350 patients living with HIV/AIDS. Our program was recently nationally recognized for its high rates of HIV control and retention in care. I also hold an appointment as Assistant Professor of Medicine at Rutgers University/Robert Wood Johnson Medical School where I teach HIV medicine and lead public health projects to reduce viral transmission in local immigrant communities, particularly individuals of Latino descent who are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS. Family Background My family has provided me with the foundation for my spiritual and vocational journey, laying the groundwork for the person I am today. I was born in New Hampshire and raised in Rhode Island in a Protestant home interwoven with threads of the Christian traditions of Kerala, India, the region from which my parents emigrated. My father spent half his career as a medicinal chemist and was then ordained in an Anglican church where he now serves as a priest in Rhode Island and in neighboring states. My mother is a nuclear physicist whose career has been devoted to medical physics and facilitating the safe use of radiation treatment in medical facilities. My brother trained as a lawyer and works in California assisting and advocating for low-income worker cooperatives. My family has raised me with a heart for ministry and with an image of Christ as an ecumenical person, one who transcends religious denominations and cultural boundaries.

My familial roots opened the door for my beloved husband and life partner, Phil, to enter. We have been married for 6 years and in 2014 God blessed us with a baby girl, Geetha, whose name means “Sacred Song of God.” Phil completed his M.B.A. and works for the Verizon Foundation where he provides educational technology opportunities to underserved students across the nation. He was born and raised in upstate New York to parents who also emigrated from Kerala, India. Phil’s family is Catholic and thus our union has brought me full circle back to the integration of Catholic theology into my life. We are privileged to be able to offer our daughter, Geetha, the beauty of both theologies.

Importance of Education/Bay View

Bay View

My maternal and paternal roots originate in villages of Kerala, India where access to resources are still far less than those in the United States, and where life is characterized by simplicity and at times harsh realities. My father’s parents were both schoolteachers in Kerala, and they raised their family to value faith and education more than prosperity and prestige. My donations to St. Mary Academy - Bay View have been given in honor of my father’s mother, Mrs. Aleyamma Chacko, who was a humble woman of pure Christian faith, a school principal, as well as a devoted social studies teacher and a mother of five. When I was seven years old she stayed with our family in RI for two years and during that time patiently taught me to speak, read, and write Malayalam, the language of Kerala, India.

This precious education has opened doors of connection to my family and my Indian cultural heritage. My periodic visits to India during my upbringing have been instrumental in shaping my understanding of the cultural diversity and socioeconomic injustice in the world, and have motivated me to enter the field of social medicine.

My all-girls’ high school education at St. Mary Academy - Bay View shaped me in numerous ways. Its religious foundation provided an important reminder that education is not simply an academic but also a spiritual endeavor. The hard work and dedication of Bay View’s faculty afforded me opportunities to engage in academic and extracurricular scholarship at both state and national levels. The community of all girls at Bay View was for me a safe space in which I could focus on developing a full sense of self. The diverse student body opened my eyes to the lives of students of different racial and religious backgrounds from across the state of Rhode Island. At Bay View, I started a Multicultural club and became involved with the Black History Month committee at that time. I engrossed myself in learning the Spanish language from not only my teachers but also from the Dominican students around me at Bay View.

As I watch my two-year-old daughter Geetha grow and develop, I am struck by the amazing yet incredibly challenging world that girls encounter today. I donate to St. Mary Academy - Bay View because I believe in the foundation it seeks to create for young women who are in need of opportunities to grow and develop to their full potential. Thank you to all of the faculty and staff at Bay View for your continued dedication to the mission of empowering each student to be a confident, independent, compassionate, and socially conscious young woman who fully lives her faith.

The benefits of playing a sport at St. Mary Academy – Bay View extend far beyond the field. This is the arena where young women learn the true meaning of courage, confidence and endurance. It is where they experience the importance of practice, patience and persistence, and where they learn to be leaders as they challenge themselves and others to work harder, dig deeper and achieve more than ever before. Most importantly, sports give young women the opportunity to be part of a team. There is nothing as powerful as many unique individuals working together toward one common goal.
