Lieutenant Governor’s Greeting Hello Division 11! I hope everyone is having a wonderful start to the new school year. In September, it’s especially important to promote Key Club throughout your school, and to make sure that new and old students alike know what Key Club is all about! In this newsletter, you will find service and fundraiser spotlights that may inspire you to hold similar projects of your own. Moreover, there is information about the Governor’s Project and the Eliminate Project. Keep in mind that trick-o-treat for UNICEF is right around the corner! In term of divisional events, the events committee is in the process of planning a sports a tournament as well as a movie fundraiser. Details on both events will be released in the weeks to come. Rescuing Leftover Cuisines

Members of Hunter, Stuyvesant, and NEST+m Key Club helped carry over 80lbs of food to a soup kitchen in the financial district for Rescuing Leftover Cuisines, a non profit organization that aims to rescue leftover food from restaurants and give it to the less fortunate. Sign ups for Rescuing Leftover Cuisines can be found in divisional update emails sent by our Lieutenant Governor Emily Li. - Division 11 Historian Angela Li

The Tie Dye Fundraiser The Tie Dye Fundraiser was one of the most successful fundraisers I held with Michele Chen as the Fundraising Committee Heads of Bronx Science Key Club. It was exciting because many people were actually tie dying for the first time. Most of the members did not have any previous experience with tie dying, but it felt nice because we all were learning to do something new while being around our friends, although it got very messy! We enjoyed hanging out by the lake and relaxing while making our shirts, but what was really nice was the fact that a speaker from the Hungtington's Disease Society of America actually came to speak to us about what we were raising money for and how we were impacting the population of people who had the disease. We ended up raising more than $220 and when we went back to school on Friday, many people were wearing the shirts they made! -

Letter from Anastasia Slepukhova Greetings Division 11! My name is Anastasia Slepukhova, and I'm so excited to introduce myself as your new International Trustee. I am from the Capital District; I live just outside of Washington DC where I have had the privilege of serving as a Lieutenant Governor and District Governor prior to being elected as an International Trustee. The International Board is comprised of one International President and Vice President and eleven International Trustees. We were all elected at the Key Club International Convention in Indianapolis this past June, and as a group, we have been entrusted with leading Key Club International and serving our members. Every International Trustee is assigned three “Sister” Districts, so this year in conjunction to serving the great New York District, I am also thrilled to be working with the CNH KIWIN’S (California, Nevada, Hawaii) and Alabama Districts. My job as a Trustee, in addition to voting on the International Board and doing committee work, is to support and be a liaison for my three assigned districts- basically the job of what Emily does for you guys, but on the international level. However, as a past District officer, I can attest that the most important job is held by you – our club officers. You are the ones putting in countless of hours organizing fundraisers and service projects. You are the face of Key Club in your communities, and that is why Key Club International is a household name across the world. And because there is so much work that you have to do in order to have thriving clubs, it is the job of everyone else on the District Board and Key Club International to do whatever it takes in order to make your job easier and provide you with all the necessary resources. So if you ever have any questions or if there is anything I can do for you, please don’t hesitate to ask!

Letter from Anastasia Slepukhova (cont.) A little about me is that I was born in Kyrgyzstan, and upon winning a Green Card Lottery, I moved to the United States 10 years ago. I am now a senior at Lake Braddock Secondary School where I am very involved with my class as President and Student Government. I also participate on my school’s Varsity Air Rifle Team and play for the Varsity Girl’s Lacrosse Team. I love staying active and being involved, but Key Club has always been and will continue to be my number one priority. My favorite service project is called “Fantasy Flight” which is an event organized by my local Dulles Airport. We decorate a plane and a whole terminal to look like the North Pole, we dress up as Santa’s helpers and we create a special weekend for kids that participate. On the day of the event, flight attendants are all dressed up as elves and we take kids with terminal illnesses on the plane to the North Pole, where they receive presents and meet Santa. This is one of the most heartwarming projects I annually participate in, the most rewarding part being when you see a child again the following year, knowing they survived and you did something to make their day a little brighter. I want to thank you all for all the hard work you put into serving your communities. Your altruism is what motivates me to work hard each and every single day. If you have any feedback for me, or if there are any questions that you might have, please know that I am always here for you! You can add me on social media, or you can email me at slepukhova.anastasia@gmail.com Have a terrific year of service key clubbers! Hope to see you all at LTC!

The Governor’s Project: The Giving Circle This year, Governor Hanna will be tackling hunger as her main initiative. Examples of service projects that can be done for this initiative include holding a pancake breakfast with your sponsoring Kiwanis Club, holding a can drive at school, volunteering at your local food pantry, and making a meal at The Ronald McDonald House. This year’s goal is to raise $10,000 to donate to a non-profit organization based in Saratoga called The Giving Circle. The organization was initially founded in response to Hurricane Katrina and Rita and has since expanded its efforts working locally the in the Saratoga County and internationally with a partnership team of Ugandans to build an orphanage and a school in Uganda. Their mission statement is: “The Giving Circle, Inc. celebrates community and the concept of one person, one community, reaching out to another in a cycle of giving. Through our interconnectedness, interdependence, and the expanded power and possibility created by our support, compassion, and cooperation, we will make a difference in the quality of people’s lived throughout the world.” One of The Giving Circle’s main projects is to build farms in Uganda. Each farm costs $10,000 and would feed all of the inhabitants of the town as well as the children that attend the school and the orphanage. The food grown can also be sold at the market which creates jobs for the members of the community. In order to achieve this goal, each club must raise $50. The farm would be names, “The New York District Key Club Farm.”

The Eliminate Project The Eliminate Project is one of the four major emphasis projects. Each year, the deadly disease known as maternal and neonatal tetanus takes the lives of 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women. The Eliminate Project’s main goals is to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus., a disease that causes tiny newborns to suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light, sound, and touch. $1.80 can provide three doses of a 60 cent immunization to protect a mother and her future children. Together, Kiwanis and UNICEF can stop this disease and immunize 129 million mothers and their future babies. In order to stop this disease, we hope to donate $100 million U.S. dollars. This money will go to paying for the vaccines, syringes, safe storage facilities, transportation, thousands of skilled staff and much more. Together, we can help save the lives of millions of mothers and their babies. Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF The month of September is nearly over. It’s time to welcome in October, a month of many new service projects and opportunities. One of the most exciting service event to look forward to is the Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF. Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF began in 1950 to help raise money for those kids who need more than just money. Since 1950, over 175 million dollars was raised from Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF. Key Club Presidents will be handing out Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF boxes around the end of October and during Halloween members can take this box and ask for donations while trick or treating. Key Club has been trick or treating for UNICEF since 1994 and has raised over 7 million U.S. dollars. For the past few years, the money raised from trick or treating for UNICEF has gone to The Eliminate Project. If you have any questions about trick or treating for UNICEF, please ask you club presidents for more information.
