Hello Division 11 Pandas! I hope everyone is having a restful and great summer vacation so far. This newsletter recaps the 2015 Key Club International Convention and recent service events. You will also find useful information regarding the district and governor’s projects. There’s even a fun article on recipes you can try out during the summer! I know that Key Club tends to wind down during the summer months, as people go on vacation or pursue other opportunities. However, it’s important to keep in mind that there’s a lot of events and projects going on during the summer! Especially in the upcoming month, there will be service projects (sometimes multiple) every weekend. For example, on August 8th, there will be 3 events occurring simultaneously: Chinatown Beautification Day Youth Conference, Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival, and the Kiwanis Family Picnic. All of these events are worthwhile, and it may seem overwhelming, but definitely try to make at least one of them! Moreover, the summer months are a great opportunity to start planning for the school year. Have a fundraiser you’ve been dying to try out? You can start planning it during the summer so you’ll be sure to hit the ground running once the school year starts! The school year can be pretty hectic, (especially for those juniors and seniors out there), so try to take advantage of the free time you have now. As always, I am always happy to help, give advice, or answer any questions you may have! Happy Key Clubbing <3 Emily Li Division 11 Lieutenant Governor ‘15-‘16

Recap of ICON By: Kenji Yeoh/D11 Secretary ICON was one of the most unique experiences I’ve ever had. There’s a lot that happened, and I can’t fathom where to start, but I guess the best place is the beginning. Arriving at Indiana wasn’t exactly full of action, but the airport was. Going down an escalator to the departure section we saw a huge poster on the floor. This poster had the boxes you would see for hopscotch, and it was from Kiwanis! We played around while waiting for the rest, and when they arrived, I also met some Key Clubbers coming from the California-Nevada-Hawaii District! I got to meet some awesome people but sadly we had to go to the hotel. The first session of ICON was the opening ceremony. The cheers and songs rang throughout the halls. The major districts wore matching shirts and hats, and the chants were endless. It continued until the beginning of the ceremony. It was amazing to see Key Clubbers from around the world join together in this one room, but the best part was the horse. Yes, there was a horse (well a pony to be exact) on stage. We went back to our rooms afterwards but it was a good first day. The second day marked the first day of workshops, along with delegations and the like. While workshops continued throughout the week, it was interesting to see all the new things we could learn. I attended a workshop about the behind the scenes aspects of Eliminate. We learned about the first hand experiences of people like Maria Palazzolo, our immediate past International President, and how they went to the countries where the MNT vaccines were being delivered. I learnt a lot, and wished I could’ve learn more. Paired with the socializing and learning, I was Clifford young’s fashionista and speech director. Despite having to meticulously go over every wrinkle and detail in his suit, I also gave him questions and tips on speaking. There was this one time where I had to put on a suit and run to another building to accompany Clifford, fun times. I met so many people yet there were a few key individuals I would like to point out. The first is one that hails from across the United States, from West Coast. His name is Kalvin from the CNH KIWINS District. He performed with the violin in the talent show and almost twerked! He has a deep care for his district and is a fun(gi) guy! The next person is Hojin from the Capital District! He is actually one of our current International Trustees and a good friend. He is super cool and fun to hang with. He is also a good friend of Clifford’s! I also reunited with a bunch of old friends, such as Terrell F. Merritt, CKI Lieutenant Governor. I also got to meet another Bronx Science Alum, who became CKI president, which just blew my mind all over the theoretical realms of understanding. The next group (not just one person) is the entire New York District Board. Ever since I reached the airport, I’ve been only receiving open arms. Everyone was nice and such a fun crowd to hang with. Michael Berthel and John Goldstein seemed like towering figures, but they were really caring and funny at times. (Especially the one time when we called Berthel since he was in the hotel room right next to Clifford and mine’s). It’s hard to name every single person on the board who went to ICON, but people like Hannah Nichols and Matt Garber were (and still are of course) amazing people. I met people from all over the world, and it was an eye opening experience. When I came home from ICON, I wasn’t sad, but unsatisfied. I wished there was at least one more day, 14 but sadly ICON can only last for so long. I met amazing people, saw amazing things, and had a fun time.

Rebuilding Houses

On Saturday, July 25th, members of HSMSE, LaGuardia and Frank McCourt Key Club worked with Steven and Jason from their sponsoring Kiwanis Club and members of St. Bernard Project (SBC) to rebuild Edmond Lam’s house. Their efforts were part of the many projects that seek to rebuild what Hurricane Sandy had destroyed. Although it has been a long time since Hurricane Sandy, the effects of the violent storm is still felt today.

District Project & Governor’s Project

District Project: The Thirst Project Mission Statement Our mission is simple: Build a sociallyconscious generation of young people who END the global water crisis. We do this by educating students about it and activating them to rock the clean water cause & build real water projects all over the world. Why Water? Health and Sanitation: Waterborne diseases kill more children every single year than AIDS, Malaria, and all world violence combined. Small children typically do not have strong enough immune systems to fight diseases like cholera, dysentery, or schistosomiasis.

You can support the Thirst Project by fundraising and donating money here: https://www.thirstproject.org /donate/

Governor’s Project: Hunger This year’s Governor’s Project is Hunger! 795 million people worldwide do not have enough food to lead a healthy, active lifestyle. The Governor’s project promotes minimizing hunger around America and throughout the world. Look below for some ideas on how to support the Governor’s Project!

What the division is doing: Division 11 participates in a monthly service project, Rescuing Leftover Cuisines, in which we “rescue” leftover foods from local restaurants to bring to a soup kitchen! What clubs can do: Support the Governor’s Project by volunteering at soup kitchen (such as Bowery Mission) or donating money to charities such as Feeding America and City Harvest.

Two Key Clubbers “rescue” a bag of bagels at a Rescuing Leftover Cuisines event!

What YOU can do: Be sure to participate in the various service events and fundraisers happening on the division and club levels. Remember, we can’t do it without YOUR help!
