Travels in Parallel Reality is a journey that aims to explore a place and discover the ‘psychogeography’ of the area. In this journey, we will learn to become an ‘investigator of the ordinary’ and to see ‘our surroundings as a living being that could be observed’. This adventure attempts to superimpose two seemingly unrelated realities together, to displace you from your current environment by transporting you into the hyperreality of another space time as another persona within your environment. By shifting your point of view into the foreign in order to see the familiarity of the everyday and our own environment/culture with a fresh eye. This is a methodology to break the ‘familiar acceptance’ of our reality, quoting Maurice Merleau-Ponty.

In this studio project, we were tasked to travel into a parallel reality back in time to discover the secrets, dreams or losses of a city. We had to create a travelogue to systematically document our parallel life in the past. The travelogue serves as a personalized data which can also be combined into a collective information to form an overall psychogeographic map of the area. These shall provide an alternative way to study spaces, the surroundings and the everyday, allowing usto reapply our findings into a new program for our design.

PROGRAM: For this project, I have chosen my ‘parallel life in the past’ to be that of a Dhobi’s. The site of my project is at Dhoby Ghaut Green, where these Dhobies would hang the laundry to dry after washing them at Sungei Brass Bassa (now known as Stamford Canal). These Dhobies were brought over by Sir Stamford Raffles in 1827, and they were brought here to Singapore mainly to wash the clothes of the British Military, and some would even wash clothes for anyone who paid them to. I have designed my architecture with relevance to the elements present in the daily routine of the dhobies. For instance, the main structure (columns) of my design takes after the form of a traditional wooden ironing board, while the beams takes after the design of a more modern washing board, while providing structural support. The main program of my building is a charitable store, where customers can donate old clothes which would be resold for charity at the store (hence the name Salvation), and customers can also visit this building just to wash their clothes (hence the second part Laundromat), and this architecture allows the Dhobies to continue working while preserving their culture that has been carried on since the 1800s.

THE GENIUS IN NATURE The Genius of Nature is a design process using the wisdom found in nature to inform and reveal a new spatial order in architecture. It is devised in the attempt to create works that are beyond the limitation of one’s ego and preconception, towards an approach that is more eco-centric. In this process, we are attempting to explore the possibilities of creating spaces, structures and functions/programs that are informed by the natural order and dynamics of plants and animals in their living context.

PROGRAM: For this project, I have chosen the scorpion to be my Genius in Nature. My architectural program and concept provides shelter and a storage facility for my “Magic” tribe to carry out their daily duties, to extract “Magical Juices” from the cliffs at Singapore Quarry. The “Magical Juice” are infused with medicinal properties which are highly coveted in hospitals in the city areas. This tribe provides these “Magical Juices” to the healthcare sector to potentially treat diseases and to research for cures, much like how the scorpion venom is used for medicinal purposes as well.

THE VILLAGERS & THEIR DWELLING OF MAGIC The Villagers & Their Dwelling of Magic is a design process whereby we are assigned to find a “villager” (e.g. shopkeeper, employee, etc.) in Little India and carry out research and documentation of that villager throughout his/her daily routine at work in reference to their workplace (shophouses). From there we then carry out our design process to explore how we can come up with a new design to enhance and improve the villager’s working experience and productivity.

These are the study models I made to help me physically show my documentation and ideation for my final design. On the left is the study model I made to show the movement of my villagers in the shop. On the right is the study model I made to show the different elevated areas where the villager can store/use for different purposes similar to the tunneling on the inside of an anthill.

PROGRAM: For my program, I have related my chosen villager’s movements, daily routines and shophouse to ants.

I decided to relate them to ants after documenting their movements in and out of their shop as they carry out their work routines. After talking to my villagers, I learnt that the way they store their stocks and other goods in relation to the layout of their shophouse are similar to the way ants seperate their dwelling areas, food storage, et cetera in their anthills. Therefore, the final design for the shophouse is inspired by the concept of ants and their anthills to make it easier for my villagers to carry out their work routines.

BICENTENNIAL OBSERVATION TOWER @ CHANGI BEACH PARK Singapore celebrates its bicentennial in 2019, and our island-city state is today connected to over 60 destinations on 5 continents via our national airline, Singapore Airlines from Changi Airport.

As part of the national calender of commemorative events, the Bicentennial Observation Tower @ Changi Beach Park project proposes a series of observation towers to be located along Changi Beach Park to celebrate Singapore’s connectivity to the rest of the world.

This project comprises of 3 stages, whereby in stage 1 we are to select a site (lamp post along Changi Beach Park) and a destination city which the SIA flies to. Stage 2 is where we document our research and site analysis on seperate boards (brief and site analysis), and lastly stage 3 is where we built our 1:20 and 1:50 scale models and do our manual drawings.

BRIEF ANALYSIS

My chosen destination city is Los Angeles, California. This Brief Analysis is a collage of landmarks and places in Los Angeles that best resonate with my imagination of Los Angeles.

N1.8 CET CAFE

In this project, we are tasked to redesign the 8th level of Block N1 in Nanyang Polytechnic for the new CET (Continuing Education & Training) Post-Diploma students to study and relax in.

We were tasked to design a new cafe for the CET students and in a seperate assignment, to redesign the layout of Block N1 level 8 into a lounge area for the CET students.

These 2 projects focused on creating an outdoors roof canopy and roof garden area respectively. For the roof canopy, we focused on drawing the reflected ceiling plans with details, and a construction drawing of the roof canopy itself in CAD. For the roof garden, we were assigned to create another roof canopy ( e.g. fabric canopy roof) in 3D modelling.
