Little Hands SureStart celebrated National Smile Month during May with two informative and fun filled events. On Monday 15th May 2017, we held a ‘Smile Morning’ and were joined by dentist Meabh Owens and her team from Great James Street Dental. The team from Great James Street Dental were on hand to encourage each child to display their healthy smile and also register any families that have not registered with a dentist yet. The dental fun continued on Tuesday Darragh shows his teeth to 23rd May 2017 at our Brooke Park Parent and Toddler group dentist Meabh at our Smile during our ‘Celebrating Smiles’ event with our associate Morning Rosemarie Cuskeran from the Community Dental Team.

Rosemarie shared lots of information on caring for our teeth with fun puppets and cool models of teeth. However, at Little Hands SureStart, we don’t just celebrate dental health matters during National Smile Month as the Tooth Fairy came to visit our Tooth Fairy event on Tuesday 26th September. All the children attending had the chance to be a Tooth Fairy or Pirate while their parents and carers received a ‘Tooth Fairy Kit’ filled with everything they’ll need to make the loss Rosemarie shares her dental of a first tooth special for their child. Our brand new Community Library App… Little Hands SureStart Community Library is a free service to benefit families living in the Outer West Area. Both children and adult books (fiction and non-fiction), DVD’s, Chatterpacks, audio books and sensory packs are available for up to one month. The Community Library products can be renewed in person, via email or by telephone. And now borrowing products from our Community Library is even easier via the introduction of our brand new Community Library Web App. If you see an item you like and it is available, simply fill out the request form and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

The Sensory Drop In

Sensory One on One ‘Me & You’ is a seven session sensory

programme, individually tailored to your child’s needs.

The programme will be facilitated two on one with the parent, child and a member of our Sensory team.

The Little Hands SureStart Sensory Drop In offers a variety of play experiences to adults and their children (aged 1 – 3 years old) every Monday morning in the Creative Kidz Room, Rosemount Primary School from 10am - 11:30am. Come along and explore your senses, take part in a story and rhyme session and play in the Soft Play Room. Contact the Sensory Team on 71 367524 or 71 267524 for more information.

The Childminder Drop In

Session 1 – Home visit Session 2 – Focus sense of ‘Sight’ Session 3 – Focus sense of ‘Sound’ Session 4 - Focus sense of ‘Smell’ Session 5 – Focus sense of ‘Touch’ Session 6 – Focus sense of ‘Taste’ Session 7 - Follow up visit (4-6 weeks after sessions)

This programme can be home based or operate from our sensory or soft play environments in Ringfort Road and Rosemount Primary School, depending on your child’s needs.

Sensory 4 Babies Sensory 4 Babies offers varied experiences and activities to enable babies to develop all their senses in a safe and stimulating environment. The four week programme focuses on the five senses; sight, hearing, smell, touch and taste. The programme supports language Tummy time & shaving development, cognitive growth, fine and gross motor foam at Sensory 4 Babies skills and social interaction. It will give parents and carers new ideas for activities that they can use at home. Contact the Creche Team on 71 267524 for more information on our upcoming programme dates.

The Childminder Drop In is open to all registered childminders living within Little Hands SureStart’s catchment area. It operates every Wednesday (term time) at Rosemount P.S. from 10am—11.45am. It offers peer support, advice, health workshops, and inspection support while the children in your care play in a safe and secure environment. Contact Susan for more information on 71 367524.

Sensory Play at Home - Magical Melting Dough You will need… * Box of corn flour

* Bicarbonate of soda

* Washable paint * Vinegar

* Mixing bowl

How to create it... * Mix equal amounts of corn flour and bicarbonate of soda using your hands or a spoon in a bowl * Wash and dry your hands before adding the washable paint to colour the dough and to create a moldable but oozey consistency * As the dough is manipulated in your child’s hand, it will melt and become runny and then solidify again when left untouched * To make the dough fizz, add a drop of vinegar and watch the dough bubble
