Most of our 6F students choose to move on to Higher Education although some choose apprenticeships or employment. Some are opting for Higher Apprenticeships or Degree Apprenticeships.
The fact that you are here, as a 6F Student, is a clear indication of your potential and indeed your intent to study beyond school. However, embarking on a degree course or a Higher Apprenticeship is something that cannot be taken lightly, so, before you do, take time to consider the following:
Looking at your academic record to date: is following a degree course a realistic aim? Consider your GCSE grades (or equivalent). Are they 9`s, 8`s, 7`s or 6`s or do you have a string of 4`s (the equivalent of a low C grade). If the latter is true, a degree course might not be for you, unless there is a particular field in which you excel At least a grade 4 pass in both Maths and English are essential for all courses Expected A Level and/or BTEC results are also crucial, especially if you have your heart set on a particular course or institution.Berealisticbutdon’tbeafraidofsettingyourselftargets.
Do you have the motivation and commitment required to see you through a difficult 3 or 4 year degree course? In Higher Education you need to be self-motivated. No one is going to make you work as they do at school!Universitystudyinvolvesmuchless“contacttime”andfarmoreindependentstudy
Do your career aspirations require a higher qualification? If not, don’t feel pressured into applying for the sake of it. Your motivation for the course may be questionable and you might “miss the boat” by not entering your preferred profession directly after A Levels. (Discussing options Mrs Hope (in-charge of Careers)orMrRobinsonwouldbesensible)
What alternatives to Higher Education exist? Employment: many professions will take on young people after A Level and have their own “in-house” training procedures that can lead to responsible positions You could also consider a Foundation Degree, Higher Apprenticeship, Degree Apprenticeship etc. Consider your optionsandbeopentoanalternativetouniversity.
If, after considering the above, you truly believe that Higher Education is the right path for you, you need to start thinking seriously about the following:
Yourcareeraspirationsandtherequiredroutetotake
Whatyouwanttostudyandwhereyouwanttostudy
Thorough research is the key. This is a big and important decision!
Eventually you will be able to apply for up to 5 courses Now is the time to begin to research the myriad of options open to you
If you already have a good idea about what you want to be in the future, then all you need to do is investigate courseswhichrelatetothisanduniversitieswhichofferthesecourses. If,however, youhavenoideawhatyou want to do then look at subjects and/or possible careers of interest. Starting with your favourite A Level subjectisapossibleidea.
Given the state of the economy and jobs market it makes sense to consider courses with a more vocational slant although studying academic subjects such as History opens up the possibility of a Postgraduate TeachingQualificationoracareerinLawperhaps.

All EAP students sitting A-Levels in their native tongue e.g. Chinese or German, must check with the universitiesthattheseareacceptableeitherasgradesorpoints (Youwillneedtoask)
All EAP Students must check what IELTs Level they must achieve – a typical requirement will be an overall IELTs6.5withnocomponentlessthan6.
EPQ: Many Universities will not accept an EPQ as a qualification, some do However, all universities will value the independent study journey that you undertake so it is useful to mention in your PS and for us to mention in your Reference Some universities will also give you a lower A Level offer if you are predicted to gain a high EPQ grade
BeawarethatitisincreasinglycommontoaskstudentstoachievepointsfromalimitednumberofALevelsORtoachieve specific grades Be sure that you are thorough with your research so that you know exactly what grades or points you require.
The courses that you eventually apply for must be realistic in terms of likely A Level / BTEC grades. Your teachers will predict grades based upon your internal school exam results gained this summer and the results of assessments in September when you return to the U6, as well as the results of the November PW Exams for those who do not have to submit an application by 15th October. Teachers will look for the potential that they believe you have. If you struggle to achieve some good results in the summer Progress Assessments and September, or November, it makes it difficult, if not impossible, to predict high grades for 2024 and this will impact on your application Also ensure that your GCSE results are high enough to access the courses you want to apply for - some courses for example require higher than GCSE grade 4`s.

Please note that the format may be changing, but as things stand, the following remains the same:
A personal statement is your opportunity to tell a University Admissions Department about you and why you deserve an offer.
“This is the crucial part of the application: when interviews are not held, tutors rely on the information given here when making their decision. It is your chance to tell the universities and colleges why you’re applying, why you have chosen the course and why the institution should want you as a student. The personal statement is the only opportunity to personalise the application. It is very important that you take time to prepare this.”
A good personal statement can be broken into four key sections:
"I'm passionate about this subject!"
Whyyouwanttofollowthecourse
Whyyouthinkthecoursewillsuityou
Whyyouwillbecommittedtothecourse
BackuptheabovepointswithanyrelevantcontactsthroughSchool,parents,lecturesyouhave attended,socialcontacts,onlinecoursesstudiedetc.
Includeanyrelevantworkexperiencethatyouhavedoneandindicatewhatyoulearnedfromit.
The above points are the most important part of the personal statement. Without a strong section here it will lookasifthestudentjuststuckapininthemapandsaid,‘that’lldo’.
The passion (or lack of) that you display for your chosen course is often the deciding factor in a successful application Usethefollowingtohelpyouwiththissection:

General advice:
Try to come across as positive and enthusiastic, though not ‘slimy’ or too wordy.
Look at information which gives clues as to what type of person they are looking for e.g., Subject Guides or Entry Profiles for the courses you are applying for – there may be clues to help you shape your PS.
Don’t ‘sing your own praises’. Simply state clearly what you have done, what you learned from it and why you enjoyed it.
Don’t worry, we’ll sing your praises in your reference!
Get as many people to read your Personal Statement as possible – the more input you can get the better!
Be aware that you have only 4,000 characters including spaces!
DO NOT Copy/Paste – UCAS uses plagiarism checker software.

Refer to your MORRISBY Report.
You should expect to draft and redraft your Personal Statement several times before it is ready to be sent. It will be checked by your Tutor, Mrs Marshall and Mr Robinson to ensure it is the best possible version it can be. Once your application is complete, The Head will read each application before it is submitted.
Training and guidance on writing effective Personal Statements and completing the online application will be given in June 2024.

Asyouarewellawarethereisacostforuniversityeducation.Existingstudentsarealreadybuildingupdebts which need to be paid when the degree course is completed. You will face Tuition Fees and living costs includingrentandfood.Auniversityeducationisnotcheap,butitisstillworthwhile.
All students who are classed as UK residents, regardless of financial background, should apply for support throughtheirLocalEducationAuthority(unlessparentsareintendingtofinancethecostspersonally).Detailsof the support available and how you apply for it is detailed at www.ucas.ac.uk in the Student Finance section, as well as www.gov.uk in the Education and Learning Section on Student Finance, Loans and Universities section https://www.gov.uk/browse/education/student-finance
The following link is for students applying this year but looking at this information will give you a good idea abouttheapplicationprocess:https://studentfinance.campaign.gov.uk/
These include course materials such as books, accommodation, food, clothes, travel etc. The amount you will be able to borrow will depend upon your household income.
From 2012 Universities and colleges offering HE courses in England have been allowed to vary the amount of fees they charge new students. Institutions can charge between zero and £9,250 per year (most charge £9,250). You will not be required to pay fees before you start your course or while you are studying (unless your parents choose to do so). You can apply for the Student Loan for Course Fees to cover the cost of these fees. This will give you the advantage of not having to find this money from elsewhere and will pay the fees directly to your institution. You then repay the fee loan in the same way as your other student loan i.e., at the end of your course and when you are earning.
Once you have finished studying and are earning over the repayment threshold, currently £25,000 AND, students will be paying back for 40 years depending on how much income they earn.
Grants for students from lower income households may be eligible to receive a Maintenance Grant.
Bursaries or Scholarships may be available at some universities to help with your funding. Be sure to investigate any options that may be available.
To apply for any of the above you must have been ‘normally resident’ with the U.K for the three years preceding the start of your course. Living and studying in a Boarding School unfortunately does not count as being ‘normally resident’. Essentially, all overseas students will be required to fund both course fees and living costs by their own means. It is also worth noting that most Universities charge higher course fees for overseas students. The situation is different for EU students – despite the UK leaving the EU, European students will be welcome at UK universities
BE AWARE: The picture with regards to Tuition Fees and Student Loans is continually changing. Be sure to keep up with how things are moving by looking at the news and the information on the Student Finance Section of the Gov.uk website.
