Rishworthian

COVID, and the accompanying restrictions has seemed, like some horror-movie revenant, to continually reappear just as we were thinking the worst was over. The Lent term saw its own share of disruption but it was also the time we finally saw the calendar springing back into something more recognisably Rishworthian again.
Sports fixtures returned in earnest and with them, our students achieving excellent results and representative honours across a range of activities. Music, from Young Musician through to Rock in the Quad, was in front of ‘live’ audiences once more. Our musicians made their mark in local competitions as a result. In the Performing Arts Centre, The Turn of the Screw was produced too.
All our students are to be congratulated on their excellent GCSE and A Level results, as must their families, their teachers and everyone else involved in their success.
It has been so exciting to be at Rishworth as so many traditional activities have returned – concerts with real live audiences! Matches against other sports teams! Examinations back in the assembly hall…well, maybe that was a little less enjoyable, but for the most part the community has been thrilled to live the full Rishworth experience again.
The Trinity term was especially packed – we had a lot of catching up to do, after all. Some highlights, for me, included the Prize Giving in Halifax Minster, with the Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire as guest of honour; the celebrations at Heathfield marking the 70th anniversary of the foundation of our Preparatory School; and Sports Day on a perfect summer’s day on top pitch. Everyone will have their own favourite memories, of course, but I hope that all those students moving on to pastures new will take with them a few special reminiscences forged in this last term. To all members of the Rishworth community, I am sure that we will be entering into our 299th year with the customary Rishworthian gusto. With that in mind, you can stay in touch with all news ahead of the 300th by filling in a form on our website. Register your details here: https://www.rishworth-school.co.uk/alumni-2/alumni
With best wishes,
Dr Anthony Wilkins
the third consecutive year, over 80% of grades at Rishworth in A Level have been at A* - C, gaining students places at Universities to study subjects ranging from Law to Psychology to Mechanical Engineering.
half of A Level grades are A* or A, again a consistent trend over the past three years, 6.1% higher than national achievement.
The results in GCSE and other qualifications announced in August reflected the hard work and determination shown by Rishworthians during a particularly difficult time nationally and globally.
Nearly 90% of GCSEs were passed with grades 4 – 9, well in excess of national and regional levels. Nearly a quarter of all GCSE results at Rishworth were with the best possible grades, from 7 – 9.
Results in Maths and English were outstanding: in both subjects, nearly 90% of passes were attained in the top six grades. Our grade 9 4 grade achievement rates in Science were over 30% higher than national average, demonstrating the strength of STEM provision within the school.
Results in Humanities subjects have also been exceptional this year, 100% of students attained with the top bands in subjects ranging from Food and Nutrition to French and Rishworth students continue to perform well in drama, music and the performing arts. In the Higher Project Qualification, 100% of grades were from A* - B.

A special welcome to our new staff members who joined us in September for the new academic year.
Joining the Rishworth team are Mr Cooper (Head of Year 7 & 8), Mr Wilson (Pastoral Manager), Mr Mallinson (IT Teacher) and Mrs McMullan-Cooper (Head of Boarding). Returning to Rishworth is Mrs Devney (Learning Support Co-ordinator), with a warm welcome also to our three new teaching assistants; Mr Carstairs, Mr Rawlinson and Miss Edwards.
Returning to the team at Heathfield is Miss Bowe, who joins the school full time and will be teaching Year 3. We're also pleased to welcome back Mr Brass and Mrs Bannerman following their respective paternity and maternity leave.
Congratulations to Mrs Jones (formally Miss Neate), Mrs Marshall (formally Miss Purdie) and Miss Sutcliffe, who all got married since the last edition of the Rishworthian.
And a special congratulations to our Head, who is now Dr Wilkins after successfully completing his PhD in English Literature from the University of Derby. Everyone at the School is very proud of you, Dr Wilkins!
The Lent term is always such an enjoyable one. As the mornings and evenings become bathed in sunshine and we can all begin to spend that little bit longer outdoors again. However, it has been no less busy indoors! The start of the term took a real focus on mental health. We were fortunate enough to receive, not only training as a whole staff by Gemma from the Charlie Waller Trust, but for our pupils to also take part in assemblies delivered by her too. We then switched our attention to the mental health of those less fortunate, raising money for Smartmove, as part of their #sharethelove campaign.
Lent term has now become synonymous with World Book Day, when pupils (and teachers) across the country dress up as favourite book characters for the day. At Heathfield, we held World Book Week as there were so many ideas that the team wanted to pack in. Colleagues and children were hard at work with various performances that were are so excited to be able to once again deliver to our parents and extended families. Years 3 and 4 put together their version of a familiar sweet factory themed story (the scenery alone looked amazing!) whilst corridors throughout Heathfield were awash with the sounds of a terrific variety of Easter service songs. I believe that you'll be able to view some of the performances throughout this magazine. I'm sure you'll enjoy!
We celebrated the 70th anniversary of our wonderful School with a number of different events across May. It was lovely to bring together our full community and really celebrate this special, special school. Our brilliant staff and children ran several fundraising activities, including face-painting and glitter tattoos - thankfully I managed to avoid both of these despite the best effort of the children!! The money raised across all our celebrations went towards the EcoClassroom, which has been named as the Gill Sunderland Room, named after our wonderful Mrs Sunderland who quite simply is Mrs Heathfield. We look forward to this being used by our children in the future. We said goodbye and good luck to our Year 6 leavers who left us at the end of term. In all honesty, I'm so proud of each and every one of them. We are lucky that the children at Heathfield really add incredible value to our school, and this group of Year 6's were no different. We wish them every success in their next steps, with the vast majority already settling into life at Rishworth. We will follow their progress with invested interest!

We returned to some semblance of normalcy for the Lent and Trinity Terms. This meant we were able to hold larger scale gatherings and we were able to return to using our beloved chapel - the site of the original School.
Please take this opportunity to enjoy our Easter Service, performed by children from Year 1-6 in the Rishworth Chapel. The full video is available to watch below. I'm sure you'll agree it was a magical performance. It gives me great pride as the Chair of Governors to see our students expressing themselves in this way.
I would also like to take this opportunity to express my most sincere congratulations to our Year 11 and Year 13 cohort, who performed so well in the summer examinations.
With best wishes,
