There are a number of celestial events visible in our area in 2023 and 2024, including two great Solar Eclipses and the annual Comet Showers.

On Oct. 14, 2023, an annular eclipse will occur in the late morning, early afternoon. On April 8, 2024, there will be a total eclipse in the early afternoon.

An annular eclipse is defined by a thin outer ring of the sun’s disk not being obscured by the smaller dark disk of the moon. Austin, as well the North Shore, will experience a partial eclipse with 89% coverage of the sun.

Not quite six months later, the more spectacular eclipse will occur. Most of Travis County will be in the area of totality. Totality in downtown Austin will last for 1 minute and 41 seconds. Bee Cave will get 2 minutes and 56 seconds of totality. The maximum length of totality, which will occur just to the west of Austin, will be almost four and a half minutes.

In addition to the eclipses, we have the viewing pleasure of our meteor showers. A meteor shower is a spike in the number of meteors or “shooting stars” that streak through the night sky.

Most meteor showers are spawned by comets. As a comet orbits the Sun it sheds an icy, dusty debris stream along its orbit. If Earth travels through this stream, we will see a meteor shower.

Although meteors can appear anywhere in the sky, if you trace their paths, the meteors in each shower appear to “rain” into the sky from the same region.

The best way to view a meteor shower is to get away from light pollution, glare, and the glow of city lights. Allow 15-20 minutes for your vision to adjust to the night sky. View the skies above, towards the constellation from which the meteors will appear to radiate.

TRAILS Hitting the

Balcones Canyonlands offers boundless hiking opportunities

One need only enter the visitors’ center at Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge to instantly come face-to-face with many of the species found on the 27,000-acre sanctuary for animals, plants and flowers.

Of course, those are just a taxidermist’s rendition, but the possibility of meeting up with real-life critters of all shapes and sizes is right outside on the 16 trails that range from twotenths of a mile to 1.53 miles in length.

Formed by Congress in 1992, Balcones was opened in order to protect a pair of birds that were on the endangered-species list at the time –the golden-cheeked warbler and the black-capped vireo, which presented a tricky proposition for conservationists, said Kelly Purkey of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

Recently, Balcones introduced guided tours with the primary objectives to not only make hiking more enjoyable, but to also provide more of an insight into what the average hiker sees out on the trails, said Purkey.

“We want people to know why we’re here in the first place,” she said. “We also want as much of the refuge as possible to be open to the public and these guided tours allow people to go places they ordinarily wouldn’t be able to on their own.”

Purkey described a snapshot of any random moment a hiker might take in and how the entire experi-

ence can be enhanced with insight added to visuals.

“Our guides have the background and knowledge to be able to take a moment of nature and describe everything that is happening in that particular picture,” she said. “It’s an opportunity to learn about the natural world around them in a different way – how everything from the soil to the water to the plants and animals all work together in the environment.”

Along with the knowledge provided by the guides – who go through a six-week training course to be certified in areas including water, geology, cultural resources and wildlife – there’s a certain sense of security provided by the presence of a trained professional when one never knows what might be lurking around the next bend in the trail.

“When people are managed and led, they feel more safe out in the wilderness,” said Purkey. “We’re trying to reach people who might’ve stayed away because they’re afraid or just don’t know what to expect.”

Among the most desirable spots on the refuge to experience Balcones in all its splendor are the Warbler Vista and Doeskin Ranch trails. “One of the greatest attractions of the refuge is that there are countless ways to customize the hiking options to create an individual interactive experience from all the refuge has to offer”, said Purkey.

Residents and visitors to the North Shore are always impressed with the multitudes of local organizations contributing to the outstanding lifestyle shared by the three communities of Jonestown, Lago Vista and Point Venture. One could almost say that volunteerism is ingrained in the DNA of those who are born and raised here and those who have been transported here by destiny or choice.

The newly established Hope Center is a wonderful example of an organization created to respond to contemporary and traditional community needs. An offshoot of the Northlake Church, the Hope Center’s goal is to provide a central location for services such as counseling, crisis management, community volunteerism for the elderly, infirm and those affected by unforeseen circumstances like storms. They also provide meeting space and special youth activities.

Just up the road off of FM1431 is another great organization, Candlelight Ranch (pictured above). Their mission is to provide educational, nature-based experiences for families and children of all abilities and needs to learn, explore, and heal. The children served include those with

physical, emotional, and behavioral challenges, economically disadvantaged, intellectually or developmentally delayed, at risk of educational or socio-economic failure, and/or enrolled in special education classes.

Located on 41 acres that includes a beautiful grotto and spring-fed creek surrounded by grasslands and oak mottes, the Ranch’s main facilities are wheelchair accessible. The Ranch offers innovative customized science and nature-based curricula to 35+ non-profit youth-serving organizations and schools, and to non-affiliated groups. They have an engaged Board, dedicated staff, volunteers and offer experiential learning opportunities for college students. Our North Shore communities provide many volunteers who help Candlelight Ranch continue the services they provide to the grateful children and families who benefit from them.

Twilight Concerts

Monthly Twilight Concerts are held September through February (the second Tuesday of the month) at Jonestown’s Italian-style Villa Antonia, providing concertgoers an intimate and engaging musical experience.

Hill Country Singers

Founded in 1994, the Hill Country Singers is a unique chorus group that offers the local community two concerts each year in the spring and fall.

Those interested in joining the group are rarely turned away, as long as they can carry a tune and have a passion for singing.

Lake Travis Music Theatre/ Rising Stars

The Lake Travis Music Theatre has been “Bringing Broadway to the North Shore” since 2007. Founded by directors and performers Barbara Graham and William Parcher, LTMT has become the jewel of Austin’s North Shore and Hill Country arts community.

LTMT produces a musical every summer, with “Mary Poppins” hitting the stage June 2023. Offering open auditions to attract the best actors and singers from around the Hill Country, LTMT productions also boast gorgeous handmade costumes and professional set designs.

Local youth from K through 12th grades are given a taste of musical theater through LTMT’s Rising

Lago Vista Players

With a 30-year history, the Lago Vista Players is one of the longest running organizations on the North Shore.

The acting troupe performs two plays a year. Previous shows have included “Steel Magnolias” and “Barefoot in the Park”.

Ticket prices range from $7 -$30/ person. Productions are staged at the K-Oaks Clubhouse at 7000 Bar-K Ranch Road.

Chamber member of the year is John Baker from Baker’s Brisket. John is passionate about his second career and takes great pride in serving up the best BBQ in the county, if not the State! It is a tradition he began as an extension of opening his home on those special days to those who were far from home.

The citizen of the year is a person who makes a significant contribution to our community. They act with courage, demonstrate outstanding leadership, and exemplify social work values and ethics, and what true generosity looks like. Examples of this commitment throughout the year include the Easter Egg drop, the Christmas Store, The Christmas Production and, the immediate tree cleanup following the recent freeze. Denny Henderson of NorthLake Church is our Citizen of the Year. He exemplifies how a human can serve as a force for good, expanding opportunity, and driving progress. He is a gifted communicator and a proven leader who brings hope to our community with over 25 years of ministry and leadership.

The role of ambassador is very important as it is a tangible extension of our office. The individual entrusted with ambassadorship represents the Chamber before the member, but also the member before the Chamber. Travis County Emergency Services District 1 is committed to providing exceptional emergency response and prevention services in an effective, safe, and courteous manner.

ABOUT US

Travis County Emergency Services District 1 is located in northwest Travis County, Texas. The district encompasses 178 square miles of the beautiful Texas Hill Country, making it the largest ESD in Travis County. The boundaries span from the Burnet County line (west) to the Williamson County line (east), and the district’s southern border is Lake Travis.

Travis County Emergency Services District 1 provides fire protection, rescue, and emergency medical services for the cities of Lago Vista, Jonestown, Point Venture, and extensive unincorporated areas of Travis County. Travis County ESD 1 maintains and operates six fire stations, which are staffed twenty-four hours a day with personnel who cross-staff mobile intensive care unit credentialed ambulances, engines, brush trucks, squads, and several special operations units.

Travis County Emergency Services District 1 has received a Class 2 Public Protection Classification rating from the Insurance Service Office (ISO). Class 2 is the second highest with only 1.1 percent of all fire departments across the U.S. and only 4 percent of departments in Texas have received a Class 2 or higher. The score is tabulated based on a variety of factors, including fire department equipment, deployment analysis, staffing, water supply, training, communications, and community risk reduction.
